Hi,
I like WP7 though I've heard that it sends a lot of information through celular data which isn't nice - i don't want to have an enormous bill later. I don't actually use it, and I'd like to completely turn it off to be sure that I won't pay anything.
I know a way to do this in WM 6.5, is it possible on WP7?
Thanks for help.
In Parameters -> Mobile network (or Network) there is an option to turn the data connection off.
Is that what you need ?

Dont worry about it, All the data leak/high usage was/is down to the Yahoo mail function, Just don't use that and you will be fine.
How is it done in 6.5? I have turned it off in connection manager, but it keeps coming on again.

Dude, does this look like the WM6.5 forum???
The thing is that after turning data off in settings(actually i turned everything off wifi as well) I still was able to search the web so the data was obviously working.

Hello all!
I just received my beautiful phone this morning, and even though it has been a little confusing to get everything going, I'm so far LOVING the experience. I have one question though:
can this phone work without a data plan?
I got it off ebay and although i paid a high amount for it, it is still T-Mobile locked. It was working just fine and dandy with just the wi-fi in my house and school (3g !!) but after I flashed co0kie ROM on it, nothing requiring data works anymore :/ Any insight would be appreciated. I was using something called "Web GoGo" or something which I can't find on this new ROM, so ?
The phone will work with out a data plan. You said you flashed a new rom, did you make sure to reset up your wifi profiles from your house and school? I've done that before you might just need to go into the com manager and make sure its connected to wifi. If its connected to wifi it should work.

It was connected to both WiFi networks and when I tried to get onto either Internet Explorer or Opera 10, they both showed that "Upsell" message that I needed to subscribe to a data plan :[
wow now I feel sostupid.your advice totally worked.all I had to do was reconnect to my wifi.thank you!

It happens, sometimes I forget that I recently flashed a new rom and didn't set up my wifi or bluetooth. Then I wonder why it doesn't work lol.

Does anyone know of an app that would help me find out what application/process is causing my 3G connection to turn on randomly...... a lot?
I've gone through all the options i can, to stop any program that runs updates (Twitter, Facebook, Stocks, ActiveSync, Internet time etc) but the connection STILL randomly connects >.<
Any help appreciated!

Thank you for asking that.
Finally someone else who find that's completely "censored".
I give you official answers from my phone provider:
It's normal. To avoid receiving a big bill, you should buy a pack data download, so if it randomly connects, you are safe. Other users reporting the same and its normal and the data pack is perfect solution- No comments
I give you answer from HTC support:
Go into settings/submenu/megasubmenu... whatever, and check "phone usage" n(which only tells the calls usage by the way, not the data)- no comments
I give you answer from forums users:
Yes either try this wonderful application: x,y,z to know the usage : (its paying ones).
Or completely mess the configuration to connect to internet via your HTC HD2 "quietly brilliant" device (very quietly)...
Ok you understand, you're more or less screwed and have to accept that complete scam.
And apparently we are 2 in the world now, to find that's an essential feature, missing (another one).
Ho and to actually diagnose which one is using gprs... Hm we can't even control to say "NO never activate DATA", because the button automatically turns on (quietly stupid).
This cab allows you to disable all data connections...enjoy
My phone was starting data connections all the time when I first flashed a cooked ROM and had it set up with the SFR Always On data connection... On my stock SFR ROM it was called Full Internet but it used exactly the same settings but I didn't have the problem so I just tried changing the name from Always One back to Full Internet and it worked strangely enough... I don't know if that can help but it might be worth a shot .
Hi,
There's one thing that bothers me in every ROM out there and even on my own. I don't have an unlimited data plan and I hate the fact that I have pull my SIM card every time I want to try a new ROM. The problem is that if I don't, I'll be charged for access cause every ROM has the mobile connection enabled by default.
I can't find any setting anywhere in the ROM files to change this behavior... Maybe I overlooked? Does anyone if it can be done and how?

AFAIK you can just press menu when you're in setup and then choose to edit APN. Go to your APN and just put a random letter somewhere in the address to prevent it from working.
At least it's possible doing that using a vanilla ROM, not sure about sense
IIRC, during setup it asks if you want to connect through mobile network & wifi or wifi only. Just select Wifi only.

Exactly, "during setup" and not at startup. It always connects through before I can select "wifi only".

Indeed. The setting is initially set to Mobile Network & Wi-Fi, until you change it in the setup wizard or settings. It's really annoying for people with no data-plan.
You could remove the APN list from your ROM to prevent it. Also, there are a few XML files with default settings. If you are lucky, it contains the Data Connection settings, and you can change it.

Maybe for you and your country network operators. It's not about the data downloaded or the time it takes for me to disconnect it. As soon as it makes a connection, I'm charged a fee.
just hold the END button and chosse turn mobile network off?
Yeah, this is a problem for me. ROMs never used to do this so it wasn't a problem, but recent ROMs have started connecting as soon as I first turn them on, which costs me 99¢ each time.
(The pricing is: 99¢ per day for 50MB, and anything extra is charged per KB)
I've lost a couple of euro to this. It's not a big deal, but it's a pain alright.

I don't have an unlimited data plan so I normally turn my 3G on and off manually when I need to. But today my 3G icon keeps coming up on the tab even when i have the settings as off. I checked my data usage from my carrier and it is indeed eating up data. I've tried restarting the phone but it's still the same.
Any idea of why this is happening and how to resolve this?
Thanks in Advance

try APNdroid, you can find it in the Market.

If you have your data disabled then it shouldn't be coming on. Check your permissions to see if you have an app on your phone that has permission to mess with your network settings.
Sent from my cm6.1 Aria using XDA App
APNDroid would work for your situation very well, however, I've had problems sending MMS's when I've had APNDroid installed (even with "enable MMS" checked).
Another option that would probably work very well is DroidWall (on the market-free). It's a firewall for your mobile data and WiFi, customizable for each allowing individual programs through. A widget on your homescreen turns it on or off. You could have it set so programs can always use WiFi, yet mobile data is blocked unless you turn the widget to "off". That wy no programs can actually transmit anything even if they have permissions set in the program. DroidWall has final say of what leaves.
I downloaded 3GWatchdog free, and was so impressed I purchased the Pro version for ~$2.50. The Pro version allows you to see specifically what program has used mobile data, and how much. That, along with DroidWall, will allow me to completely customize and control my mobile data while still retaining as much functionality as possible.
Ok Well I downloaded both APNDroid and Watchdog and now I can't even turn on 3G. I just uninstalled both of them and turn my phone off and on still no 3G.
Thanks anyway guys. I getting really close to giving up on Android and moving to the iphone. Every other day there's a new problem with this mobile OS and I always have to download an app rectify something that shouldn't be happening in the first place. It's getting ridiculous.

Did you turn your mobile data back on before uninstalling APNdroid? If not, you might want to look into that
No offense, but I dont think its Android that is the problem. Have you taken the time to fully understand the phone? I havent had a hitch since I got this phone. Once you reinstall APNdroid, enable your data, and then remove the app. If you would like to manually turn off your mobile data then do this menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks>uncheck data enabled
If you dont want to go through the hassle of that, download an app to do it for you. Quick settings can do it. Open quick settings>menu>preference>statusbar shortcut *To access quick settings from status bar* Then hit back>menu>customize>move up mobile data(APN) from hidden settings. Then all you have to do is click on or off for mobile data.
You can also download various widgets that can do this for you without having to go into quick settings. APNdroid being one of them. I use Widgetsoid.
Hey guys,
I have been successfully running my HTC Dream with Cyanogen mod 6.1 for a few months now and I love the fact that I can run 2.2.1 on this phone. Few problems I have encountered:
1) Name display not being supported even though in phone plan. (I know I have it because of my blackberry spare which was lying around).
2) Battery life SUCKS on this phone and dies in less than 8 hours sometimes after some phone calls and text messaging. Is there a lighter rom using the same kernel on the phone along with radio? I need more battery life on this phone.
3) Android market doesnt seem to work for me. I tried using wifi, someone elses sim card who has data on their plan, it just doesn't seem to connect to google servers to create and account. Anyone know why? Driving me nuts as I would like to explore the market a bit.

Not sure what you mean by 1) above
2) You can turn off 3G, GPS, and WiFi on the G1 and that will help a bit with battery. Then just turn those on when you want them.
3) Do you have an account in Settings - Accounts & sync settings? I believe you need an active Google account signed in to have the Android Market work.
Also, once you do some research, you can look into installing Ginger Yoshi on the G1 to get Android 2.3.4. It works pretty good.

1) I get a call, no name displayed just the phone number. No idea why.
2) Did all that hence why i am asking if there is a rom out there that uses less resourses while giving me access to at least 2.2
3)It leads me to set up account but it won't connect to google servers properly. I have also tried someone elses sim and that didn't work.
try moving to another rom, one option...
the call thing...did you import your contacts from sim/sd card after flashing new rom/radio or anything???
battery...only one option...get a new extension battery...u get 2300/2450/1700/2850 mAh's which would behave better than the original battery!!!

Do you have those numbers associated in your contact with the related names? If not then it will only show up as numbers.

Most if not all of the current ROM has at least 2.3.4. Some might even have 3.x if the DEV updated them.

Do you have the data plan or are you using wifi?
If you have a data plan, did you have the 3G, EDGE, etc... icon show that you have data connection?
If no data plan and you connect via wifi, did you turn on the Wifi Connection and connected to a wifi network?
Sorry of these type of question, I do not mean to be rude. Just an observation that those thing might cause the problem.
