Gizmodo and MobileCrunch have pretty much bashed the battery life to make it sound like if its not on the charger, it will die in a matter of an hour or three. For the people who got one from the I/O or other means. What do you get from the phone during a normal days usage? If its that bad, have you guys use SetCPU/Locale/App Killers etc? Thanks.
With light to moderate use, it lasts through the day. A bit worse than Nexus One in that respect, but not too bad.
Agree with sergey.povzner.
Android central had a great review on this. I have heard a mixed bag of battery life. Some sounded very good some didn't. But it's the most power smartphone out there so additional drain is expected.
http://www.androidcentral.com/review-sprint-htc-evo-4g-android-smartphone
It not as good as my n1 but its close. It gets a lot better with custom roms without sense.
Uptime 10:08:35
Awake time 1:46
I had it plugged into computer for about 25 mins to transfer a movie.
I have 80% battery left.
No bluetooth, no GPS, no WIFI.
I don't have anything extra except gmail and another account frequently syncing. I get 4-5 hours of browsing and email with 4g on or off, wifi off, gps off. Standby time doesn't seem to have significant effect though I'm sure it would be measurable if you left it in standby for a day. Adequate to get me though a day, but I hardly use voice.
What if you are watching full length movie on HTC Evo, how long will the battery last (especially if I put it on airplane mode)?
I am planning to switch from from Xperia X10i to HTC Evo. My x10 has the usual battery drain problem but I have controlled it with task killer. However, I am yet to run a full movie on it. If x10's battery life has more survival time (with task killer on it of course) then HTC Evo then I might think twice.
Also can the 'task killer' improve HTC Evo's battery life?
Does anyone know if the Evo uses the HTC Touch Pro size battery like the Hero?
If so then I've already got an external charger and three extra batteries!
Honestly if anyone is that worried about battery life get another battery as a backup. Its been said many times on these forums that a HTC Touch Pro 2 and also a HTC Hero all use the same batteries as the EVO. (Confirmed). You can pick them up on ebay for around 7 or 8$. Which is pretty cheap! Nothing better than having an extra juice pack laying around waiting to be used! Hope this helps somewhat

LOL we posted at the same time, thanks for answering my question! I'll keep a backup in my glove box and one in my back pocket. This method worked great with my Hero.

i'm so excited, wish I had an extra battery though, it'd be nice
8hrs 15min till i get mine!
Gotta say this thing blows my old Moment's battery out of the water... 4.5 hours hard and heavy use... 60% left - no 4G coverage area (but it was left on by accident - ooops) and no video watching, but heavy text, email, and facebook/twitter activity.
I ordered the extended slim battery from seidio.com. 1750 vs 1500. Should give a bit more in the long run.
Its been decent for me though. Just dont jack up your brightness, keep it on auto.
Wifi kills my battery. The signal never settles even though the coverage should be good all over my house.
You want to go into advanced wifi settings and change WiFi sleep policy to never otherwise your phone will shut off WiFi after 15 mins of screen being off and you'll be using 3g which will use a lot more battery.

Mybattery was pretty terrible. Lose 10% per 40 minutes on standby mode alone. After messing around with it for a while I discovered the culprit was the location services. I turned them off and now I lose about 2% per hour on standby.

I'm curious, how exactly do you go about turning off the location services? Unless it's included with the GPS tab of the settings, I haven't been able to find such an option on my brother's Hero.

It's under settings , location and then location setting. This does not disable the 911 location which is good.
So as I mentioned in the battery life thread, in the T-Mo store, the Galaxy was reporting 2d5h on and still had 32% left in the tank. Obviously that is without SetCPU or anything and people have to have been playing with it. Even not, 30%/day not being touched is pretty good. What have you guys done for battery life? Have you noticed the "ramp up" time that is always claimed by cell phone manufacturers? Mine has sucked today but I've been beating the hell out of it. I'm going to charge it and let it stay unplugged overnight to see what the standby drain is but what is everyone doing? Have you messed with SetCPU at all?
Thx

Who cares, I'm buying 2 spare batteries from Ebay, just like I had for my G1. I can go thru all 3 batteries on my G1 while at work for 10hrs. So, I'm assuming I will get similar results.

Haha I know what you mean. That's what I love about having a removable battery. Who cares right? Swap it out and you're good.
As for my experience, the battery live has been good. The battery status bar up top is not accurate though. Similar to the reception (bar) problem how it shows no bars but you actually have great signal. I'm sure a software fix will be available soon for this. Very minor.
Here are some things you can do to improve battery life:
Remove all unnecessary widgets off your screen. I had an analog clock on there and when I removed it, I noticed better battery life just from that. No joke.
Turn off the live wallpapers. Those drain battery too.
Turn off wifi if not using it
Turn off bluetooth
Set the notifications to refresh at a longer interval instead of like every 5 mins etc...
If you're really nit picky, check "use only 2g networks..." - I personally wouldn't.
Adjust your screen to the lowest brightness. I love that it's an SAMOLED screen, because I could never get by with the lowest setting on other lcd screens.
Hope this helps man...enjoy!

By the way....regarding non-OEM batteries....I do notice that they are all 1500mAh (like oem), but I've always had a stigma about putting generic batteries into expensive devices.
I guess where my stigma comes from is due to my past experience with my digital camera, when I took photos of a wedding and my files got corrupted. My only explanation was because I was using a non-oem battery, because ever since that I've only used oem batteries along with that same memory card and have never had a problem since. It's been 3 years.
Since the non-oem batteries are 1500mAh, it shouldn't matter right? Now that I think about it, I do remember the camera batteries being of a higher mAh than the original battery...I know this only has to do with the capacity, but as for the voltage output, could there have been a strange surge to cause the corruption?
I know I'm just being paranoid, but just thought I'd get some input from those who know about the mechanics of batteries and the likelihood of any malfunction due to it being a cheap non-oem battery made in china.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
My biggest battery drain was use wireless networks was disabled by default. All apps that tried to get my location therefore turned on GPS. One widget was bugged and would keep using GPS, killing my battery overnight. Uninstalled the widget and enabled use wireless networks and only lost a percent or two overnight. Make sure the GPS icon is not consistently on when not using Google Maps and whatnot.

This didn't really do anything for me. Under usage it definitely uses less battery than my N1 but standby SUCKS. How did the one in the store get 2+ days. I switched from GSM/CDMA Auto PRL to just GSM Auto PRL. I am switching back. WCDMA Preferred actually got me better battery on the N1.

The Amps and Volts are important, but in a battery is only a small part of it. The quality matters, the drain matter, it's max input matters, it's sensitivity to fluctuation, sensitivity to over charge... etc etc etc...
That being said, most modern devices these days have a lot of internal fail safes that should try to stop anything crazy from happening... because really the battery could have any amount of amp hours rated to it, how much it can and will output is what matters though. You could theoretically make a battery the size of a car battery for the thing that with 1500AH (aka 1,500,000mAH) would give you a retarded amount of standby time as long as it was rated about the same on everything else... although charge that thing wrong and you would have a pretty cool fireball...
an app called juice defender seems to work pretty good for me on the vibrant (ultimate juice is the paid version with all the features). I previously used it on my cliq and had good results also.
what it does is disables apn and/or wifi and you choose what intervals it comes back on. example - you could have it come on every 15 minutes for 1 minute at a time to complete necessary syncs. you can also set up night schedules etc.
I would recommend this app if you're lookin to save some battery. it also has a little widget to show you how much battery you have saved. not sure how accurate that is though. good luck!

Is it cool to use the home charger for the nexus one AND the Galaxy interchangeably?
I ask because I'm ignorant to the amps/differences. It would be lovely to keep one charger at home, and one at work.

I stopped caring. As long as it has enough to charge to stay on between unplugging it in the morning, and plugging it up at night, I'm golden. I've had the phone since launch, and I've only charged it up twice, so that's about two days between charges. I got it with a roughly 60% charged battery.
I use BatteryLife by Curvefish to see my battery usage.

Galaxy S/Vibrant charger is 5v @ .7A. I think I read that the N1 wall charger is 5v @ 1A. It'll charge a little faster, and will probably heat up the battery more, but it shouldn't destroy the phone. I'm sure somebody smarter will correct me, though.
I really needed battery. I use my EVO a lot, not much as a smart phone, but as a little computer. I installed several dictionaries and I use them during the day, at least 8 hours or more. My battery was lasting 4 hours before getting the warning. I disabled GPS, 4G, WiFi, everything. I never listen to music on it. I got rid of the live wallpaper. I got rid of most widgets and killed apps several times an hour.
It was getting really stressing for me. I was not always lucky to be at a place with a power outlet.
So I had to do it. It was a somewhat expensive solution. It's the XP18000, which is almost like EVO (and this does not intend to be an advertisement). It's heavier than EVO, but it's just like another book in my backpack, but much smaller than a book. It's for laptops, but I figured out that in the future I will be able to use it for other gadgets, or for EVO II.
I've been using it for 3 days, and it seems that it will last for a week or longer, because it's almost full still. It's so great. At least for my peace of mind. Now I don't have to worry. I can be at ease.

If you've got the room for it, I think that's a great idea. Like you said, you can use it for other devices as well. There are smaller ones out there - the Zagg Sparq comes to mind.

You are right. There were some other models (but they had only this brand for some reason) and they were cheaper, but maybe I'll buy a netbook or something, and it would be useful for that too. The box says it can power a laptop for 6 hours with one charge, so maybe it will last a week for evo, or even more, it looks like it. And of course, if I can use an outlet I will, because this battery charges max 500 times before dying according to the specs.
This goody might be too much for a smart phone.
Ah, and also I bought it with the Sprint rebate I just got yesterday.... I guess that's why they give you a rebate...
Well, look at it this way: If a full charge lasts you two days and you use it to the max all the time, it will last you 1000 days. That's almost 3 years of continuous use. Even if you dried it up every day, it would still spec out for a year and a half. And if you only used it for your phone and you get, say, 4 days out of it, it will last you through this presidency and the next.
Use an outlet if it's easy, but if it lasts anywhere near as long as it says it's going to, you don't have to be that conservative.
Hey OP, let me ask you something: Have tried not using advanced task killer? I see you're using it on your evo. Did you know Google and all developers recommend against using task killers and they can actually severely hurt your battery life? Just throwing that out there since you're complaining about battery life. You do mention that you're killing apps "several times an hour". Thats not good and I guarantee you makes a HUGE difference

The other thing is that it's not just a power adapter, it a charger, so once EVO is charged, no more power pack for a few hours.

I tried with the app killer, and without it, and I really didn't see much difference in battery life.
The only I noticed is that after the Froyo upgrade a few days ago, the app killer was useless, as the apps would come back right away. So it was useless. This is a stock EVO.
But you are right, now I can get rid of the killer!
(but as I said, I was overusing it as a dictionary, or as many dictionaries, so it was not a normal use.. It was on most of the time. It's easier to carry EVO loaded with dictionaries, than actual books...I was also using dictionaries on line, wordreference.com, etc. so I was (I am) definitely using it a lot, and that justifies the battery loss. I disabled the widgets to compensate for the other apps I was using)

Task Killers are garbage; don't use them. So let me get this straight, you use your Evo, with the screen on, at least 4 hours a day. That is why you are now using this Energizer battery pack to charge your Evo during the day?

I use EVO much more than 4 hours a day. Much more. I have to unlock the screen and press that little button maybe 40 times a day (it's a hassle), many times an hour, and that takes battery too I'm sure. I had to charge evo at least 3 times while on the road, at Starbucks or any place..... but since Starbucks started offering free WiFi, they covered many power outlets with chairs or cabinets.
I should have bought a little computer instead from the beginning, or a tablet, to load my dictionaries correct?
But now the problem is solved.
But again, I have to say that I was doing the same thing with my Blackberry before, and I would never have to recharge the battery until when I got home at night. That's why I expected the same, or at least I didn't even think on batteries when I switched to the HTC EVO. I wasn't thinking on the battery issues, because before I didn't have any.
first off, i love this phone. no joke, but the battery is well...laughable to say the least. on my HD2 running android, i get double the battery life and they HD2's battery is a 1200 battery, the EVO'S is a 1500. and android boots off the SD CARD and has NO POWER MANAGEMENT on HD2'S. my evo dropped to 54 percent battery today in 3.5 hours. no wifi, no bluetooth, no GPS and no 4G...all im saying is... WHAT THE ****!
It gets better. Load up some custom kernals + setcpu and you'll get great life. I'm running CM6 + snap 8.2 and it lasts the whole day with moderate use.

There is plenty of info on battery issues with EVO.
First... I would recommend rooting.
Second, use the FRESH build based off the new OTA leak.
Finally, change Settings / Mobile Networks / [uncheck] Enable Always-on
Then... ALWAYS keep your WiFi radio on. Add your home network if you have one... and wherever you go, add whatever hotspots you are in proximity of.
And if you ever consider doing a new build, backup your WiFi access point data via Titanium Backup before you do.
That should just about cover it... You will get a full day of use PLUS some out of that battery.

No when I got my evo I was clearly.told and shown a doc from sprint (the manager over mobile area is a buddy) to tell everyone to expect 6 hours of battery life with normal use. I was able to squeeze out 8 - 9 myself. I know people say conditioning the battery is a waste of time . IMHO do it I noticed a nice increase in battery life. I have to laugh at people who get pissy about battery life when they are holding a mini PC.
Myself i avg. 18-20 hours a charge with normal use. I have 2 backup batteries so I don't worry to much about juice
from the fade
I really dont feel the Evo is a bad phone h, hell I love the damn thing . I just feel HTC kinda screwed up things in the process . One telling customers to expect 6 hours of use is alittle of a joke . Who the hell only works six hours a day ? Or is that six hours also include you getting up getting ready for work then coming home before you go to bed ? Second , its pretty clear the Evo has a bug in its charging system . People have reported that using stand alone wall chargers to charge the batteries they are getting improved life out of the batteries (Sorry I have never removed a battery from any cellphone I have had in the past to charge it and not gonna start now) . Third yes the HTC Evo is litterally a pocket pc with capabilities most phones dream of having . Then why the hell did they give it a 1500mah battery ? Thats like strapping a 55 gallon drum of fuel to the space shuttle and saying "Yeah this outta make it" . Sorry for my rant had to get it out (plugs phone in to charge again) LOL
OP, I like you, you're funny
A couple things..
1) Why do you have your CPU governed below 700mHz while awake??? You won't save battery that way, your phone runs at a gHz, use it!!
2) Setting your min/max both at 245 on sleep will actually decrease your battery life and your phones wake up performance, maybe not much. Capping your phone at 245 when asleep makes it a harder transition to awake because it makes that sudden jump when you wake it up. Setting your max somewhere over 600 on asleep, and setting it to OnDemand will ease the transition from sleep to awake.
There is no shortage of battery life tips but here's one: The auto rotate function polls for g-sensor status like once every 15 milliseconds. I use a switch on my homescreen to turn it on when I want it and keep it locked in portrait when I don't need it. This will help conserve some juice
I'm only scratching the surface here, I'm sure you do realize what a wealth of info there is on the subject already. FWIW, I use the crap out of this phone and I consistently get 20+ hours out of a charge. Good battery performance is achievable!

20+ Damn, what rom and kernel are you using? Im kinda having the same problems too. Im limiting my phone tryin to get better batt, that ****ing sucks. I just want to use my damn phone, without much sacrifice. Thanks
Why the hell do you have 4 phones running the same OS?
I was wondering how I could extend that battery life on my DINC? Any suggestions and tips would be great.
Ah yes, the battery issue. One I am all too familiar with.
Easy:
For whatever reason our phones charge to 90% and stop there. To correct this, you can either charge while the phone is off or do what we call a bump charge. Bump charging involves charging the phone to "full" while its on (the light should be green) and then turning it off while still plugged in. The light will then change to orange again for 30+ minutes and then green again. You will then Really be fully charged.
Also make sure you have GPS and Bluetooth off when you aren't using them. This will help a ton.
There is an option in Settings - Wireless & networks - mobile networks - called "enable always on mobile data". Unchecking this will drastically help save while the phone is asleep on the 3g network. However, doing this will affect how often you receive updates to chats and sync items when the phone is sleeping. To me it isn't a big deal since if I'm not using the phone why should it be working, but everyone is different!
Finally, a rogue app might be nomming away at your battery. An app from the market called System Panel will monitor how much battery each app is eating. Its free initially but if you want it to monitor over time in the background it does cost. However it is definitely worth it since its a great app and useful for any android owner.
Intermediate (has cost):
Evo batteries fit in our phones! The fit is a little tight but it works just fine. Our stock batteries have 1300mah of capacity which is a bit on the low side. The evo battery has 1500, so it's an hour or so better. You can buy them cheap off ebay (OEM Evo Battery) for around $15.
Conversely, there is the official extended capacity battery for our incredibles with a massive 2150mah. The trade off is that it adds bulk to your phone and costs a lot (around $50). There is the third party seidio battery which adds even more capacity (3500) but adds even more bulk.
Advanced:
Are you rooted? There are kernels out there that are undervolted like Hydra kernel, adrynalyne's undervolted and kingklick's voltage scaling kernel. Everyone has differing experiences with them so there's not a solid "best" so to speak. You can flash these kernels using the clockworkmod recovery. This will all be nonsensical if you're not into the Modding scene.
Also if rooted, you can underclock the processor which, depending on the kernel, can help drastically save battery. You can set profiles to have the cpu work at a minimum speed while the screen is off. Kingklick doesn't advise using setcpu with his kernels and it straight up wont work with hydra's, but it can do wonders on any others.
--
Depending on your activity, you should expect 4-5 hours of 3g awake usage and around 5-6 if you're mostly on wifi using the stock battery. 3g can be a battery drain if you're in an are with inadequate service.
Hope this helps!

turning off gps doesn't matter all that much. GPS isn't called upon unless you have an app using it. I have mine on most of the day (for tasker profiles) and have no issue.
Use WiFi when available, its quicker than 3g and takes less battery.
download setCPU (from xda) and make a profile for screen off max/min = 400/245 or something like that.
i have 'always on data' checked, no issues for me
kernels help a ton, kk#5 is a beast.
I'm running uncommon sense, kk#5 and the above settings. I'm on 20 hours unplugged with 35% less, standard usage. -- not bump charged, charged while on to 100%
isn't the system panel app like a task killer? and from what i've read task killers are pretty pointless with froyo......however i have noticed that my phone is constantly running with about 140mb of ram free, i don't know if this is usual or if something is wrong?? i just got my Dinc so i'm new to all the tweeks and tricks, i do have mine rooted though. i'm not that up on changing roms and kernals though so i'm just trying to find out what all i can do to help my battery without having to buy a bigger one. any help would be greatly appreciated!!
If you are rooted and aren't comfortable with flashing ROMs and kernels, look at setcpu that was mentioned before, and search for instructions to remove the stock apps that always startup on their own in the background. Unless you actually use them, then you can't really do that obviously. I don't have any times on how long it lasted before and how long it last now but I do know its improved. I have mine at a processor clock speed of 500mhz and I don't see much lag time unless I'm really running a lot of things. I'm on WiFi listening to Pandora and I'm not experiencing keyboard lag while typing this.

is there any risk to my phone from running setcpu ? i JUST got it and really don't want to break it already!! hahaha

no...the max it'll run is 1.19 ghz. worst that will happen is a bootloop which can be fixed through nandroid.
Just increment a little at a time. I usually run mine at 1.075 ghz w/ on demand.
screen off profile max/min - 450/245
I use JuiceDefender on my Incredible and believe it or not it really works. It's turns off your data while the phone is on sleep mode so no battery is being drained. I get at least 5 hours extra battery life. You also get other features that come along with it so just give it a try It's free!

Yes system panel CAN be a task killer but I do not suggest using it as such. Instead, it does a great job monitoring how much CPU each app uses so you can take educated action.

1. If you use location based services and have GPS on, it will use the GPS module quite a bit. This is certainly a battery drain.
2. If you dont have any issues with always on mobile data then you must be in an area with good coverage. For me if its left on it drains my battery quite a bit because I'm in a flaky coverage area.
Everyone's phone is different though. Finding what works and what doesn't is the first step to perfection. I just installed the new skyraider sense and my battery life has been ultra fantastic. It works great for me, but I know others dont have that success.
