[Q] Permaroot, -S and custom rom - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey everybody, first off I'm a noob..Phhh feels good to finally let it out lol..I just have a question not sure if it was asked already or not..I just got a mytouch 4g and i did a permaroot, got -S and installed cyanogen 6.1.2 RC2 and I was wondering if all that meant that it's unlocked. I have simple mobile now but was thinking of going with another carrier. If it isn't unlocked can someone show me how to unlock it (possibly for free) or direct me to the right place.

the ./gfree and SuperCID have unlocked the SIM card to use on any carrier. IF you did that then you should be good to go. If you know someone with the carrier you are looking @ just ask to use one of their SIM cards for a moment and see if you get signal.

Yea I was able to do all that so I'll see if anybody I know has that carrier and give it a try. Thanks for responding so quickly

HTC Hero Telus - BASICS

Ok, got my HTC Hero Telus, but am kind of overwhelmed by the root and terms used.
Can somenoe just briefly fill me in, what does ROM actually mean and do?
I've been searcing the forums, and found a bunch of updates for RADIO on the Hero, what is this for? What are these updates for?
What's best way to start rooting, and how to learn all these ROMs, Radio, and other terms?
THANKS!
Welcome to XDA!
A ROM is the operating system on the phone. It's called ROM because it gets installed to the phone's "Read Only Memory." There are custom ROMs to replace the stock one, you'll find those in the Hero Android Development forum. This forum also has plenty of posts about how to root/flash your phone.
The radio is the firmware that goes into the phone's radio device. Generally it's best to have the latest radio version installed, currently it's the JU version found in the Official Radio ROMs link in the Hero Android Development forum.
As far as the Telus Hero itself is concerned, there are a couple threads about it in the "Hero General" and "Hero Q&A" forums. Any common problem should be tackled in one of those threads. I think I was the first one to root a Telus Hero (unless someone kept quiet about it) so I've been through just about every Telus-specific issue that has arisen. If you go through those threads and still have questions, I'll be happy to help... but please look through the forums first.
EDIT: Start on page 2 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576826
Thanks for the response Craig, you definitely cleared it up for me.
I'm using the TELUS hero on AT&T, so is there anything different regards the root and radio update process because I'm on AT&T?

That shouldn't make a difference to the radio/root flashing process... However, I have no idea what it'll take to put an AT&T SIM card in a Telus Hero. I know it can be done, I just don't know the steps since I'm using mine on Telus.
Also, a lot of the issues that show up in that thread I linked you to are Telus-specific, so that might not help you as much as I originally hoped.
Good luck!

Using the phone on AT&T is really simple. Nothing like the complicated steps you have to do to goldcard/downgrade/root the phone. I'm using a white Telus Hero on AT&T, and didn't have any problems.
One question, though. How'd you buy it? If you bought it "unlocked" from a website like ImportGSM, then all you have to do is open the back of your old phone, take out the SIM card, and put it in the Hero. If you bought it on eBay, had somebody in Canada ship it to you, or bought it yourself from a Telus store/Best Buy/etc., then you need to unlock it first. You can get the unlock code from a number of websites, thought you'll have to pay for it. Then put your SIM card in as above and the phone will prompt you for it. After you put in the code, you're good to go!
If you want to use the internet or MMS, then there's actually one more step. You have to put in the APN settings, which tell the phone how to access the network. They can be found in the forum somewhere or by Googling for "AT&T APN".
Ya I'm using it on AT&T works fine, but I'm trying to root it but not having any luck!

Oh, ok! Sorry, I can't help you there. I'm waiting till I've got some sort of backup of the firmware that came on the phone (Or some other official upgrade meant for the North American model) before going through the process to root the phone & load a custom ROM. Just a personal preference

T mobile G2(pls help)

Hi fellas i am new to this forum n wanted to ask a question i even searched fr it but couldnt find the thread
I live in india and have bought imported T mobile G2 frm ebay n it says it is unlocked to work with all sim cards........
so does it mean that it is already rooted and i can directly install mocado roms
or i have to root it again to install htc firmware(the seller said that it has been imported from germany n was unlocked there using some meathod before shipping)
so pls help
1) This is the CDMA Hero forum, meaning we don't have any stinking SIM cards.
2) Just because it's unlocked doesn't mean it's rooted.

sry bro didnt know tht
so if i root the phone and do smthng wrong the phone will still remain unlocked i guess............n thn it must b unlocked by using the code i guess
so the lock is permanant or i will end up locking my phone again if i don smthng wrong
The sim unlocked state is permanent. Once you root etc, you can install custom roms like modaco, but this won't affect your unlocked SIM status. Best to not use CDMA forums for this though... Try the ones above it in the list
Not really sure. There aren't any unlocked CMDA Heroes yet. So I would recommend asking your question in the Hero Q&A sub-forum. You'll get a more proper answer there.

[Q] How to unlock HD2 with NexusHD2 Gingerbread?

I have flashed Tmobile HD2 with NexusHD2-Gingerbread but noticed that I can't still use AT&T Sim. Can someone help to explain how to get it to work?
Thanks.
hd2 can't use at&t 3g for one thing. next if you're talking about network connection and phone calls, that does seem strange. what radio version do you have? try looking through older threads about what radios are good for which carriers

Uhh. Just wondering are you trying to unlock your HD2 by flashing that rom? Then what you're doing won't unlock your phone. You have to get an unlock code.

Agree - to get it to work with AT&T sim card you will need the code for it. Once you put SIM Card in it will ask you to type in Unlocking Network Code or something like that - you enter it and that's it - it is unlocked...
FYI I did it under different ROM but it worked fine.

[Q] rooted with CM7 rom = unlocked?

hello. I have a mytouch 4g and i have rooted it and put CM7 nightly on it, does that mean my phone is also unlocked so i can use another carrier on it? i have been trying to do a search on this but i cant find a clear answer. thanks in advance

SIM unlocking is done with the step that involves 'gfree'.
gfree is a utility that unlocks your SIM and CID set to 111111. In other words, unlocked. If you ran this program then you are sim unlocked if it said SUCCESS or COMPLETE or whatever it says. If that step said fail, make sure you do it right and try again, but thats the one that unlocks it.

Entering in unlock code for ROOTED Mytouch 4g

Hey you guys, I have a rooted mytouch 4g and I emailed tmobile about sending me the unlock code for my phone so I can switch over to at&t in a few weeks. I have the code and I even have a non tmobile sim card, a tracphnne sim card to be exact. I put it in and I do not get the option to enter in my unlock code.It just goes like normal. I'm sure its because of my awesome phone being unlocked, but is there another way for me to put my code in? Thanks.

I don't think your phone is compatible with Tracphone SIM cards.
not all SIMs are created equally.
I know.
I know, I really want to use it for At&t but I dont have a At&t sim card right now, so I want to use the tracphone to get it unlocked first.

Find out how it was rooted because if the gfree method was used it is already unlocked. Or even just go through the gfree process

How do I use and download the gfree? Is it a rom or a program?

Ehh its more of a file. You can find it right here. Read and follow the instructions to the t. Don't worry about the temp root part because you already have root.

Its going to work. You might get a little lost in the steps, as I did, but it works flawlessly & my opinion is the best way to root.
