HTC Hero Telus - BASICS - Hero, G2 Touch General

Ok, got my HTC Hero Telus, but am kind of overwhelmed by the root and terms used.
Can somenoe just briefly fill me in, what does ROM actually mean and do?
I've been searcing the forums, and found a bunch of updates for RADIO on the Hero, what is this for? What are these updates for?
What's best way to start rooting, and how to learn all these ROMs, Radio, and other terms?
THANKS!

Welcome to XDA!
A ROM is the operating system on the phone. It's called ROM because it gets installed to the phone's "Read Only Memory." There are custom ROMs to replace the stock one, you'll find those in the Hero Android Development forum. This forum also has plenty of posts about how to root/flash your phone.
The radio is the firmware that goes into the phone's radio device. Generally it's best to have the latest radio version installed, currently it's the JU version found in the Official Radio ROMs link in the Hero Android Development forum.
As far as the Telus Hero itself is concerned, there are a couple threads about it in the "Hero General" and "Hero Q&A" forums. Any common problem should be tackled in one of those threads. I think I was the first one to root a Telus Hero (unless someone kept quiet about it) so I've been through just about every Telus-specific issue that has arisen. If you go through those threads and still have questions, I'll be happy to help... but please look through the forums first.
EDIT: Start on page 2 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576826

Thanks for the response Craig, you definitely cleared it up for me.
I'm using the TELUS hero on AT&T, so is there anything different regards the root and radio update process because I'm on AT&T?

That shouldn't make a difference to the radio/root flashing process... However, I have no idea what it'll take to put an AT&T SIM card in a Telus Hero. I know it can be done, I just don't know the steps since I'm using mine on Telus.
Also, a lot of the issues that show up in that thread I linked you to are Telus-specific, so that might not help you as much as I originally hoped.
Good luck!

Using the phone on AT&T is really simple. Nothing like the complicated steps you have to do to goldcard/downgrade/root the phone. I'm using a white Telus Hero on AT&T, and didn't have any problems.
One question, though. How'd you buy it? If you bought it "unlocked" from a website like ImportGSM, then all you have to do is open the back of your old phone, take out the SIM card, and put it in the Hero. If you bought it on eBay, had somebody in Canada ship it to you, or bought it yourself from a Telus store/Best Buy/etc., then you need to unlock it first. You can get the unlock code from a number of websites, thought you'll have to pay for it. Then put your SIM card in as above and the phone will prompt you for it. After you put in the code, you're good to go!
If you want to use the internet or MMS, then there's actually one more step. You have to put in the APN settings, which tell the phone how to access the network. They can be found in the forum somewhere or by Googling for "AT&T APN".

Ya I'm using it on AT&T works fine, but I'm trying to root it but not having any luck!

Oh, ok! Sorry, I can't help you there. I'm waiting till I've got some sort of backup of the firmware that came on the phone (Or some other official upgrade meant for the North American model) before going through the process to root the phone & load a custom ROM. Just a personal preference

I found out that there is a T-Mobile Wing Rom

I ended up bricking a co-workers Wing yesterday and after some internal research, found out that there is a recovery rom that is developed by tmobile to reinstall the original oem rom. I am working with internal departments to allow the rom to be available legally right now. Prod development has the rom currently on t-mobile's intranet. Hopefully they will allow us to use it and essentially make it available to the general public.
No more bricked wings!!

Well that sounds good, please keep us posted.
Incidently it isn't nice to tease the animals . . . .
Well, I am just looking at the legal concerns of uploading the rom without express permission. Maybe I could do so on my home pc.
I now have a copy of the tmo wing RUU but I am trying to get tmo to release it to the public before I send it anywhere.

Is your phone bricked or are you looking to tinker? I might be able to get it to you somehow.

Just looking to try some different ROMs out, but I have no reliable way of backing out if something screws up. I've tried taking dumps but have been unsuccessful.
How'd you get t-mobile to release it to you in the first place? I'll gladly call up and get a copy for myself if I knew what to ask for without sounding like I want to void the warranty.
Xavier6303,... I would really like to get a copy of the t-mobile wing ruu. I bought a phone from an ex-t-mobile employee over ebay, and the bluetooth modem does not work correctly,... I eventually got though to t-mobile's level 3 support and they said my ROM version was old but could not give me the new one. Said I needed to replace the phone.
I have ROM version 4.10.531.3 WWE, dated 03/15/07,... he said the latest t-mobile has is 4.27....
What version do you have? Can I get it from you,... Pretty Please.
What!?!?!? They have a NEW rom and haven't released it? With all the problems this ROM has they are sitting on it?

To my knowledge this is the stock ROM that comes installed on the wing, not an upgrade.
Does anyone else have it or know how to obtain it from tmobile? What could we ask for that would make them give it to us without making it sound like we're going to do something that might void the warranty?
Edit: Sorry. Just realized that I had pretty much already asked this... long week... lol
Xavier just upped it here.

Verizon X1: Unlocked?

Hi. I finally bought the Xperia x1i a few days ago. But i noticed it said "Verizon" on the back. Also, there are a few Verizon apps like "Verizon Live", which seems i cant remove.
Right now im not in my country so X1 couldnt fully recognize my network, but it did answer to my Minutes Credit request properly.
Im not sure if this is fully unlocked, and if it is, if there could be any problems with my cellphone using ANY of its respective functions. Would it??
Please answer i would thank you a lot!!!
If the phone is accepting your non-verizon sim then it isn't locked.
However your ROM may have some custom verizon settings which you don't like, most can be removed via registery editing.
Another option is to head over to the ROM section of this forum, you find ways to install the generic ROM, or even custom made versions.
Oh well i thought of that! But how risky is it to install roms for someone who simply has no idea of that or programing? Im not stupid, but i would be good if there was a step by step tutorial. Are there any?

What to do first?

I have a HTC Vogue (100) w/WM6.1 that a friend gave me and have been considering Flashing over to MetroPCS. I know the phone will do talk/text and even though MetroPCS says no DATA, I see people have enabled that as well with flashed ROMs. So now i'm just a bit confused as to the proper steps to take:
1) Do I unlock/flash the phone before or after MetroPCS flashes it to their system?
2) If MetroPCS assumes no DATA do I have to convince them to put me on a DATA plan anyway in order to set up DATA?
Sorry for what may seem to others as basic knowledge but I could quite figure this stuff out - information overload.
Thanks,
npeelman

To flash the device, follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592964
My Rom is pre-configured to work with MetroPCS, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=652271
And to set up MetroPCS web and MMS, follow the directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448955
You have to have data from MetroPCS in order to get data to work (the $40 plan includes it already)
Good luck!

As long as you're putting a WinMo ROM on it, it shouldn't matter which one it is.

I'm sorry. I don't understand how that answers my question.
You can flash the ROM before you bring it to MetroPCS if you want. I don't think it matters to them what ROM is on the phone for them to activate it, as long as it's a Windows Mobile ROM and not Android.

Ok, update:
Successfully flashed the imcokeman 2.31 bootloader and flashed the ROM as linked to above by egzthunder1. No problems so far as I can tell. I have not been to MetroPCS to activate it yet. The only thing i've played with so far is GPS but I am not getting any satellites. I did change the Settings->Personal->Location to ON from 911 but still no go.

Actually, it does matter because Houdini soft will likely not recognize anything above 6.1 (phone codes simply will not work from a custom rom with a custom skinned dialer). If you successfully unlocked it, there is no need to re-lock it or anything like that. Just flash back to stock, and then take it to MetroPCS. Once the device has been configured, you can switch roms. This is necessary because most MPCS customer reps are not familiar with any of these.
Thanks for the info, that's what I was looking for. Now to just locate that stock rom and away we go.
Thanks again!

Just a quick update. I downloaded .40 unlocker and the stock Verizon ROM and successfully flashed my Vogue back to stock. It did hit a hickup erroring out at 8% on the first try but the software was able to recover correctly. I don't recall the exact error but I know it has to do with the USB connection. When I unplugged/replugged the phone it didn't switch back to the USB connection (on the phone), it stayed on Serial. Second attempt worked perfectly.
I still haven't made it to MetroPCS to flash the phone yet though.

[Q] Anyone have AT&T rom flash?

My DVP decided to crap out yesterday for no reason. I read the "how to unbrick your phone" thread and was able to revive the phone using the TMO ffu file. It crapped out again so it looks like it's the SD card. I will be doing the flash again but does anyone have that file for AT&T instead of TMO? Thanks in advance.
It might be possible to use the TMO ffu, update to 7720, then use cabsender to send the ATT firmware bundle and turn it into the att version (as that's the only file that differentates the 3 versions)
It could also possibly brick you to the point that nothing can fix it, so I'm intentionally not posting the direct link to the files, but there are links to them if you search around for the VP on xda.

I think I'll give it a try, can you point me to the right cabsender? If it bricks I really don't care, went out and bought a Lumia 900 and actually like it. Thanks for the help.
Joey
I'm only make a (hopefully) educated guess on the whole thing, I believe there's only 1 version of cabsender(?), but it's the actual cab that i'm talking about that i'm not linking to.
Since the potential issue of permenetly bricking isnt an issue(?), look on the VP page on the xda wiki, it's listed there.

[Q] how to unlock galaxy s4 from straighttalk SM-S975L

So I looked everywhere and no one seems to know how to unlock a straighttalk s4
since this site the best with cellphones problem solving I'm askin for some help :/
its a SM-S975L
when i ran the network unlock tool it was already unlocked the boot loader wasn't locked either the only thing we need now is rom development to include our devices. I have twrp and used towel root to root the device.

I'm dealing with this same issue right now. Bought an SM-S975L for straight talk last night and I want to use it on Metro PCS. Metro says all is well on their end and I just have to wait, but all I see is "Invalid Sim" on the status bar. How did you unlock the SM-S975L? There's very limited information around the internet about this model. I'm tearing my hair out and the wifey is driving around without a phone. Figured you (or anybody else) could point me in the right direction.

LOL, the $249 deal was hard to pass up. I got a couple of them, one for me and one for the misses. She'll be fine with the 4.3 that is on the phone out of the box, but I wanted to convert mine to be like the I9505G (GPE). I was thinking it would be simple as I've heard all of the LTE models were like the I9505 and they seem fairly broken into. But I think this is more like the SGH-I337 and maybe boot loader locked, but looking into ways to test that. I did root it already using towelroot. Installed SuperSU and Titanium Backup and root is working, now so see if I can get CMW and a GPE rom on it. If I find a way I'll be sure it is mentioned here as a working method for the SM-S975L. I'm not using it yet as I have my GT-I9500 that I'm using, but seeing better support for the qualcomm for custom roms I decided to get it. The I9500 should get Android 5.0 official rom first though.
For what it's worth, I just picked up this phone from the Black Friday sale, and I would *really* like to put a custom ROM on it. I won't even pretend to be proficient in this. How difficult would it be to convert the custom ROMs on other models of Galaxy S4's to this one?
I am unsure my self the closest variant is the att s4. Both the att one and this one is bootloader locked. Since we have 4.3 version of Android safestrap would be likely what to use. I am afraid of this my self so I have not attempted it

It is the SM-S975L with a T-Mobile ROM and the custom kernel. The SGH-I337 ROM does not work, it erases the system partition every flash.
Awesome work aromerblz. Anything special you had to do to load the ROM with the S975 baseband...or any issues you're experiencing? Will be testing this out later in the week when I get some free time.

That is cool, at the very least its Kit Kat. I still would like to find a method to convert completely to GT-I9505G. Just no time. I'm hoping with jtag access it can be completely reconfigured, then just make sure the IMEI is set to that the device should be. Ideally the only way to see it was a SM-S975L would be to look under the battery. I don't really care about removing the SIM lock though, I plan to stick with my ST SIM. I did get a new BYOD SIM and it is showing 4G now (Not sure if it should indicate LTE like old ATT S3 does) as my old BYOD SIM would not and ST support said that I could not move the included SIM to any other device as it would be bound to the S975L.
I would love to get off the Tracfone ROM. I'm going to assume that Samsung/Tracfone will never upgrade this phone beyond Android 4.3. The last native update was in February of this year, and it was just a minor patch. I'm not too concerned about unlocking, but being able to use a different ROM seems to be a step in the right direction. If anyone could post a tutorial or what ROMs they used, that would be extremely helpful. I've looked everywhere and this info is not available anywhere.
For what it's worth, someone over on GSM Forums has claimed to have flashed the AT&T ROM too. They also were unable to unlock it, however. Unfortunately, I can't post the direct link until I have hit 10 posts That poster has been inactive for two months, and before that, he was inactive for three years. I first flashed a T-Mobile TWRP recovery v27.1, but the latest v28 works fine. After that i downloaded the TMB firmware NB4 from sammobile.com created a custom rom with the android kitchen. After that the usual flashing of the rom via TWRP. Without a custom kernel the phone does not boot up. So i used the ktoonsez kernel. Once booted i rooted with towelroot and pjone has been working fine. Only things to know is that when booting up it says "Kernel is not SeAndroid"
"Set Warranty Bit: Kernel"
As that specifies it trips the knox flag. Which i dont care if it does as am not in the USA.
You used the TWRP for jfltetmo, correct? Did you use Odin to flash it?
Also, this might seem obvious, but even if I do this, it'll still work/remain locked to ST/AT&T, correct?

Yeah TWRP for jfltetmo. The jflteatt does not seem to work at all on this model. I flashed with odin, no need to use safestrap on this phone as i think the bootloader is not locked like the one found on the SGH-I337, although its the identical variant.
Yes the phone remains locked to ST/AT&T. A friend of mines was able to get the unlock cod for this phone but even with the unlock code its not a permanent lock. Reason is because you can unlock and be able to use all the features available to the phone but once restarted it asks for the code again. Not sure why it does that, I believe the radio has to be the culprit for that here. Not sure how TracFone will handle the unlocks for this phone after 01/01/15. does the same even on full stock TF firmware.
