help, frequent WF lockups - Wildfire General

Hi, my gf has had her WF for a while and there was always some lockups but maybe like once a week.
Now, things are worse and it's about 2-3 times a day. Everytime she needs to take the battery out.
The phone was running wildpuzzle v0.7 rom, to try to stop the lockups i changed it to cyanogen 6.1 but the problem remained.
The phone was overclocked at 650mhz but the same problems exist even at default 518mhz.
I don't think the overclock was/is the problem, there is an app to test the stability of the phone and i tested for 5h at 710mhz and it was stable so 650 should be very stable. But as i said, even at 518mhz the problem persists.
What else...it's running jacobs overclock kernel...android 2.2.1 obviously.
I'm just hoping this is not a hardware error because we have no warranty, i SIM unlocked the phone...
What should i do? Is there anything i could try? I'm willing to try the official 2.2.1 or even 2.1 but i don't want to loose root, how do i do that without losing root? Really any suggestion would be very helpful.
Thanks

Can I ask wat u mean buy lockup do u freeze n u have to pull battery
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App

yes, it just freezes and becomes completely unresponsive, the screen is ON, displaying whatever i was doing in the time of the lockup, and then the battery must go out or it would just sit like that for hours

Had the same problem once too.U or rather ur gf put both the max and min at 600+ didnt u?
When u use SetCPU,remember to set minimum at 245 or so.Should fix the problem

Oh,i forgot, set it in performance mode too and if u use the widget, make sure its in passive

Try overclockwidget instead of setcpu

nope, min is 19 accodring to set cpu and max is 650
i will try to change min to 245, BUT...on the wildpuzzle rom i was using the 650mhz overclock kernel, so i didn't even use setcpu or any other program and still there were lockups
and i'll also try overclockwidget, thanks
other than that if everything fails i'll uninstall every overclocking program and run it at stock just to see how it works then

i have removed set cpu and so far no lockups, hmm

Its def a SETCPU problem. I haven't had a single freeze up since replacing it with OverclockWidget

i'll wait for a day or 2 just to confirm that there are no lockups and then i'll try OC widget, thanks to all

My phone steadily overclocks at 710 only while on the charger, however when off the charger it tends to freeze up and crash (especially when the screen is off). I only ever overclock that high while playing RT2 or another high intensity 3D game. I think that we need to make an overvolt kernel to better overclock but making kernels is way over my capabilities.
I am stable at 652 on battery on any rom/kernel. My phome gets extremely warm all the time (even when 480 max), but I think that has something to do with my crappy battery and always running the phone at 100% brightness.
@mejorguille, what rom or kernel are you using.. CM 5.0.8-DS Can Online Do 576. I wanna try 652 if its good on my G1.

Some help
Hey guys,
I've rooted my G1 with no problems overclocking for bout a year plus till NOW!
The problem was my clockspeed is capped at 528 no matter how i use it? how do i get off the restrictions for the 528 mark? i'm using set cpu!
Regards!
For those of you overclocking like crazy. You are not doing anything but making your phone freeze up and get hot!!!!! Your cpu can not handle that. And will not be going any faster than maybe in your mind!!!!!!

[Q] SetCPU for MT4G?

Is it safe to install SetCPU on the MyTouch4G now that we have permaroot? If so, what are the settings we should use with it? Just not sure if the current kernel has been tested with SetCPU or not, and if it works what version of SetCPU... 2.0.3 or 2.0.4?
Thanks.
I am running 2.0 4 with autodetect. Set at 1024mhz performance. No issues and been running 3 days now.

So you're not overclocking it then, correct? What is your setting for the minimum frequency?
I have it at 245mhz.

The closest options for this are the following:
368640 max
245760 min
What did you use for the scaling and priority settings?
EDIT - Added a screenshot to this post. I've tried both 2.0.3 and 2.0.4, and no matter what I set for the minimum setting it stays at 245 (not what I defined). Does it not work then on this stock kernel?
I was going to say the same thing, from what I have seen on my phone setcpu is not doing anything. It won't change any of the clock speeds whether boosting the low end or limiting the high end.
I have tried a few things like setting profiles for less than 75% battery to lower the max clock speed and that doesn't work either. Am I crazy or are others experiencing a placebo effect on profiles lowering clock speed when screen is off?

Just an average power-user. I email and text a lot as I own a consulting business. I am constantly on the go and need my battery to stretch as long as possible.
That is why I kept the stock kernel and didn't over-clock. I simply removed all the bloatware and non-essential apk's that I didn't need and set up a few profiles in SetCPU and now I can get an easy 2 days of power use out of it.
As I still employ the stock kernel and stock ROM I have no lag what-so-ever. Response is perfect IMHO.

SO I am new to this... I used your same settings and my bat shows 56%. On the my screen it still shows that its jumping from 1024-245. Am I missing something?
EDIT: N/M I am just dumb and forgot to preflock!
So I set my profile to have
Screen Off Pri 75 Max 3K Min 2K
Bat 75% Pri 50 Max 7K Min 2K
Bat 50% Pri 50 Max 3K Mn 2K
I will let you know how it goes but I am hoping for some good bust in bat life.
Had some issues when waking the phone, so I changed the settings on the screen off to Max 768. Going to test.
I also moved the 50 Bat to 30 and still getting good life out of it.
Well I have been experimenting with some profiles in setcpu and I have noticed a great increase in battery life especially when in standby a lot.
So i have done this according to what works for everyone else. But... my battery still drops from 100 down to 40 in about 5hours and it has been this way since the 2.2.1 smh. I dont kno what to do. I do text alot and get on facebook mobile semi frequently but mainly text and omg the phone gets up to 104 degreez wen using or charging. Any suggestions ? Or anythjng i may be doing wrong

SetCPU configuration

Hello,
I just installed SetCPU and configured some profiles. I'd like to hear comments about them:
Screen Off 83/83
Charging 667/83
Battery < 15% 83/83
Battery < 30% 222/83
What do you think of setting 83/83? Too low?
How can I overclock?
I'd like to set a profile for temperature controlling, what is considered a high temp?
Thanks!
I would like to know about this as well. How has those settings worked out for you so far?
Using 83/83 was way too slow. When I had screen off and wanted to turn it back on, it would take too long.
I'm currently using these profiles (in order off priority):
Charging 667/83 (ondemand)
Screen off 222/83 (conservative)
Battery <30% 222/83 (conservative)
I haven't figured out how to overclock yet.

For overclocking we would nees a custom kernel that supports overclocking.

Thanks for the info. I'll give this a try.
Charging 667/667 (performance)
Screen off 166/83 (performance)
Temp >37C 166/83 (conservative)
rest of the time i have under-clocked it to 333/166 (conservative)
ondemand scaling is a bit laggy when switch speeds...
current setup gives me bout 45-52 hours of usage time.
this includes around 200 msgs a day(outgoing), a total of about 1 hour wifi on time...and around 30 mins bluetooth on.plus an "always screen on " option while texting...
apps/widgets running
$brightness is minimum....always.can increase using widgets when u wanna read or check sumthin out, then revert back to min.

Do you get lag after turning the screen on?
I used to have anipet Aquarium Live Wallpaper + ADW Launcher EX, and had huge lag when turning the screen on - with 222/83. I stopped using the Live Wallpaper, and it got better, but there's still lag sometimes. I don't know how heavy ADW Launcher EX is, if it is it's fault or not.
Using performance scaling, if I'm not mistaken (the documentation page of setcpu is down) forces the cpu to always run at the max frequency, so it'd be the same as setting the max and min frequency as the same value, right?
I'll give a try at using conservative instead of ondemand and see if I get less lag, though I'd expect exactly the opposite!
What's the point on downclocking the CPU while using the phone ? I mean, 333mhz makes me think i bought a chinese phone (And not a cool one like the ZTE Blade).

i totally agree, i would love to able to overclock it, not underclock it
i have undeclocked it coz i want a longer "ON" time...i am texting and callin ppl most of the time so battery lasts jus for a day.i don't wanna charge it everyday.plus using at 333 isnt so bad..i don't play games(much)...and even when i do(angry birds, paper toss) it works fine...u will get used to it....and whats the point in overclocking this phone? with a crappy resolution no HD game will run on it.
the only thing that sucks at low speeds is the gallery.however this can be "solved" by using the Quickpic app.it's better organized and hella fast.but it lacks the fancy looks...
@iomartin..there is no delay or lag and i have disabled the lock screen also.i use go launcher btw.

Wow thanks for this. I used these settings except for the last one (underclocking when the cellphone is being used)
Last time I recharged was 63 hours ago, and battery indicator still shows 50% left! I have:
- Watched an episode of Kenny vs Spenny (640x480)
- Played ~1h of games
- Surfing + downloading ~30min on Wi-Fi
- Installed ~ 10 apps
- Texted about 50 messages
- Made about a total of 10 minutes of calls
- Sent songs through bluetooth for.. ~10 minutes
- Listened to music for about ~30 mins
Still 50% left? Amazing. Of course this can (or is) a problem with the crappy indicator and it can quickly decrease to ~15 in a heartbeat, but it still is pretty amazing.
Phone says it has been on for 73 hours, I wonder if that's the actual time I recharged it for the last time, or if It's the last time it was charged?
Once again thanks for those profiles. First time I used the app I reckon setting the same but I used OnDemand scaling (What's the difference between these btw?) and It lagged like hell when I turned the screen on again. None of that happens now, the phone works the same way as if it had normal clock speeds.
Oh and I don't use 3G and I've got APNDroid blocking all internet connections. I wonder if that does anything to the battery life?
EDIT: Now I used some bluetooth for 15 mins and made few calls and it got bumped down to 15% and told me to recharge. Guess It'd still work for about 6 hours on stand-by but still the battery life for me was ~67hrs, whilst being ~48 before.

Probably.
Did you try troubleshooting?
There are dozens of different reasons why your phone could be rebooting.
Could it be your rom?
Could it be the kernel?
Could it be an app installed?
Too many running processes causing it to crash?
Could it be the overclocking?
Could it be hardware defect?
Coult it be sunspots? Aliens? Lockness monster?
Whatever. What have you done on your part (besides posting your phones instability) to pinpoint the problem?
Next you're probably going to mention that your battery life sucks too. Lower the clock speed and your phone will become more stable and save battery.

sometimes not reset within a day or two, is an annoying situation
Any idea ?

this happened to me a lot as well while using marmite kernel, it was the overclocking that make the rom unstable.
hope this works!
I am on the CM 10 stable on the Nexus S for a week now and have not had any reboot issues at all. Everything working smooth. I am using the stock kernel included in the ROM. Replicating your situations also do not cause any issues. My suggestion might be if the issue still persist to download and flash the ROM again and test for a couple of days with the default settings and without flashing any different kernel.
Increase you voltage +25 across the board. Then try to replicate the reboots.
