[Q] SetCPU for MT4G? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it safe to install SetCPU on the MyTouch4G now that we have permaroot? If so, what are the settings we should use with it? Just not sure if the current kernel has been tested with SetCPU or not, and if it works what version of SetCPU... 2.0.3 or 2.0.4?
Thanks.

I am running 2.0 4 with autodetect. Set at 1024mhz performance. No issues and been running 3 days now.

So you're not overclocking it then, correct? What is your setting for the minimum frequency?

I have it at 245mhz.
Sent from a rooted myTouch4g Glacier.

set up a profile under screen off and set max down to 3000 and minimum at 2000...saves me ton of battery power now
also download auto killer memory in market and set to optimum for even better battery life

I thought that over clocking required a custom kernel?

The closest options for this are the following:
368640 max
245760 min
What did you use for the scaling and priority settings?
EDIT - Added a screenshot to this post. I've tried both 2.0.3 and 2.0.4, and no matter what I set for the minimum setting it stays at 245 (not what I defined). Does it not work then on this stock kernel?

I was going to say the same thing, from what I have seen on my phone setcpu is not doing anything. It won't change any of the clock speeds whether boosting the low end or limiting the high end.
I have tried a few things like setting profiles for less than 75% battery to lower the max clock speed and that doesn't work either. Am I crazy or are others experiencing a placebo effect on profiles lowering clock speed when screen is off?

For HTC phones need to be rooted and also disable perflock. In setcpu: menu->perflock disabler. I set my perflock to disable on boot.

Hot damn, that fixed it! Now to test it out further to see how well it works here. I'm not looking to overclock, just underclock when I'm not using the phone. Thanks for the tip!

Just an average power-user. I email and text a lot as I own a consulting business. I am constantly on the go and need my battery to stretch as long as possible.
That is why I kept the stock kernel and didn't over-clock. I simply removed all the bloatware and non-essential apk's that I didn't need and set up a few profiles in SetCPU and now I can get an easy 2 days of power use out of it.
As I still employ the stock kernel and stock ROM I have no lag what-so-ever. Response is perfect IMHO.

SO I am new to this... I used your same settings and my bat shows 56%. On the my screen it still shows that its jumping from 1024-245. Am I missing something?
EDIT: N/M I am just dumb and forgot to preflock!
So I set my profile to have
Screen Off Pri 75 Max 3K Min 2K
Bat 75% Pri 50 Max 7K Min 2K
Bat 50% Pri 50 Max 3K Mn 2K
I will let you know how it goes but I am hoping for some good bust in bat life.
Had some issues when waking the phone, so I changed the settings on the screen off to Max 768. Going to test.
I also moved the 50 Bat to 30 and still getting good life out of it.

Well I have been experimenting with some profiles in setcpu and I have noticed a great increase in battery life especially when in standby a lot.

So i have done this according to what works for everyone else. But... my battery still drops from 100 down to 40 in about 5hours and it has been this way since the 2.2.1 smh. I dont kno what to do. I do text alot and get on facebook mobile semi frequently but mainly text and omg the phone gets up to 104 degreez wen using or charging. Any suggestions ? Or anythjng i may be doing wrong

SetCPU configuration

Hello,
I just installed SetCPU and configured some profiles. I'd like to hear comments about them:
Screen Off 83/83
Charging 667/83
Battery < 15% 83/83
Battery < 30% 222/83
What do you think of setting 83/83? Too low?
How can I overclock?
I'd like to set a profile for temperature controlling, what is considered a high temp?
Thanks!
I would like to know about this as well. How has those settings worked out for you so far?
Using 83/83 was way too slow. When I had screen off and wanted to turn it back on, it would take too long.
I'm currently using these profiles (in order off priority):
Charging 667/83 (ondemand)
Screen off 222/83 (conservative)
Battery <30% 222/83 (conservative)
I haven't figured out how to overclock yet.

Thanks for the info. I'll give this a try.
Charging 667/667 (performance)
Screen off 166/83 (performance)
Temp >37C 166/83 (conservative)
rest of the time i have under-clocked it to 333/166 (conservative)
ondemand scaling is a bit laggy when switch speeds...
current setup gives me bout 45-52 hours of usage time.
this includes around 200 msgs a day(outgoing), a total of about 1 hour wifi on time...and around 30 mins bluetooth on.plus an "always screen on " option while texting...
apps/widgets running

Yeah, but we need someone who's crazy enough to try to overclock his i5800 without any information on the CPU X)
SetCPU lagged my phone like crazy all the time it was on.

Do you get lag after turning the screen on?
I used to have anipet Aquarium Live Wallpaper + ADW Launcher EX, and had huge lag when turning the screen on - with 222/83. I stopped using the Live Wallpaper, and it got better, but there's still lag sometimes. I don't know how heavy ADW Launcher EX is, if it is it's fault or not.
Using performance scaling, if I'm not mistaken (the documentation page of setcpu is down) forces the cpu to always run at the max frequency, so it'd be the same as setting the max and min frequency as the same value, right?
I'll give a try at using conservative instead of ondemand and see if I get less lag, though I'd expect exactly the opposite!
What's the point on downclocking the CPU while using the phone ? I mean, 333mhz makes me think i bought a chinese phone (And not a cool one like the ZTE Blade).

i totally agree, i would love to able to overclock it, not underclock it
i have undeclocked it coz i want a longer "ON" time...i am texting and callin ppl most of the time so battery lasts jus for a day.i don't wanna charge it everyday.plus using at 333 isnt so bad..i don't play games(much)...and even when i do(angry birds, paper toss) it works fine...u will get used to it....and whats the point in overclocking this phone? with a crappy resolution no HD game will run on it.
the only thing that sucks at low speeds is the gallery.however this can be "solved" by using the Quickpic app.it's better organized and hella fast.but it lacks the fancy looks...
@iomartin..there is no delay or lag and i have disabled the lock screen also.i use go launcher btw.

Wow thanks for this. I used these settings except for the last one (underclocking when the cellphone is being used)
Last time I recharged was 63 hours ago, and battery indicator still shows 50% left! I have:
- Watched an episode of Kenny vs Spenny (640x480)
- Played ~1h of games
- Surfing + downloading ~30min on Wi-Fi
- Installed ~ 10 apps
- Texted about 50 messages
- Made about a total of 10 minutes of calls
- Sent songs through bluetooth for.. ~10 minutes
- Listened to music for about ~30 mins
Still 50% left? Amazing. Of course this can (or is) a problem with the crappy indicator and it can quickly decrease to ~15 in a heartbeat, but it still is pretty amazing.
Phone says it has been on for 73 hours, I wonder if that's the actual time I recharged it for the last time, or if It's the last time it was charged?
Once again thanks for those profiles. First time I used the app I reckon setting the same but I used OnDemand scaling (What's the difference between these btw?) and It lagged like hell when I turned the screen on again. None of that happens now, the phone works the same way as if it had normal clock speeds.
Oh and I don't use 3G and I've got APNDroid blocking all internet connections. I wonder if that does anything to the battery life?
EDIT: Now I used some bluetooth for 15 mins and made few calls and it got bumped down to 15% and told me to recharge. Guess It'd still work for about 6 hours on stand-by but still the battery life for me was ~67hrs, whilst being ~48 before.

[Q] Battery

So I have my phone running Ice Glacier 1.1.6 everything is fine but like I see a significant drop in battery from not much use. and it says display is taking most of the battery power. I have auto brightness on and not many widgets.. Any ideas ??
Do as I did change your blacklight settings and don't use auto bright. Then disable some service using 3rd party apps and trust me there is alot of them that you will never use or need so get rid of them from even starting and if it even restarts have it shutdown. I am also using IGv1.1.6 as I flashed it last night and normally comparing it with IGv1.1.5 its better. Also scale your mCPU with SetCPU and when idle underclock it normally its 800mhz on avg load. Don't waste your battery trying to OC it lol just so you can brag about benchmark. Do this 3 you will see improvement, most folks always talk about uptime but we talk about awake time as thats what really matters.

i dont understand the SetCPU stuff =/
^^^^BUMPP^^^^^
Set cpu is a program you can download that allows you to change the speed your cpu runs at. U can even make profiles so say when ur battery reaches a certain level it will under clock the cpu to run at a lower level to increase your battery life. It also allows you to overclock your phone to run faster but at a significant loss to your battery life.
Hope that helps.
Oh set cpu isn't free now but there are others on the market that do the same thing that are.

I have set CPU but I don't understand how to operate it
What most ppl do is set a profile to run at the minimum speed when the phone is turned off to increase batt life..also, use a reasonable on demand setting for all other usage..no need to do crazy overclocking if you dont need the power

SetCPU vs. CMSettings Built-in CPU manager

For those of you on CM7 (preferably RC2 or later nightlies), are you using SetCPU or the built in CMSettings CPU manager? Which is giving you better performance/battery life?
I can't help but think that the built in CM Settings CPU tuner is going to be conflicting with my SetCPU profiles.
Been using nightlies since #30 or so, and I currently run SetCPU with a normal profile, a screen off profile, and a profile for <10% battery and haven't touched CMSettings' CPU manager.
I'm contemplating just uninstalling SetCPU for a day or two and seeing what a 1017max / 245min Ondemand or Powersave governor via CMSettings ends up doing to my battery life considering there will be no screen off profile.
Any thoughts?
I dumped setCPU after a lot of testing (and even bought it on market)
I'm finding I'm much happier using inbuilt CPU settings. I think battery life is the same but performance is better due to the fact that SetCPU would sometimes get stuck in my screen-off profile when turned on causing the phone to be really slow.
I recomend uninstalling setCPU, set your ONDEMAND governor with ~1Ghz and run it... You'll find your battery about the same but much less hassle.
I have yet to try that, I somewhat feel obligated to use SetCPU since I purchased it lol. But it probably won't be the last time I waste money at the market.

I've been wondering about this too. I don't quite understand how it works. Can I just set the frequency higher till a certain point without changing the voltage and get the same battery life?
What's the best way of doing this? Just change the clock speed or do I need to change something else or update the kernel?
Whatever you tell SetCPU to do, you'll see the same settings mirrored in the CM settings.
I say setCPU cuz as battery gets lower... I have my CPU speed lower also. Basically, 15% battery lasts me forever :] lol

Definitely. This is the one thing I like about SetCPU is having the 10% and 5% profiles so that I can get the last few % to last forever if I need it. Although in normal day-to-day use I'm never pushing it below 20%.

Yea I see this, as far as the governor changing etc.. This is why I'm wondering if it would be easier on my phone to just run only the CM Settings one.
I notice that every 5th or so time I unlock the phone, there is an obvious lag switching from the screen off profile, and my unlock sliders jitter around and it takes 4-5 tries to unlock the phone. I think this is probably partially due to both settings switching over trying to change.
I think I might try backing up and uninstalling SetCPU for tomorrow to see how it goes.

I've read on here that overclocking the Vision's CPU up to 1 GHz requires no over-volting, and in theory should not affect battery life (but not sure exactly where that information originates from). But there has been lots of debate on these forums on whether the SetCPU app helps or hurts battery life depending on screen-off profiles (underclocking to save battery) or its constant polling of the CPU clock (possibly killing the battery faster).
A kernel that supports overclocking is already part of the CM ROM. If you are on CM, you can just adjust the clock speed under Settings>CM Settings>Performance>CPU settings. Or set the CPU clock using an app like SetCPU. Choosing one method over the other is what is being asked/debated here. If you are on the stock ROM, you need to be rooted, flash a custom kernel that supports overclocking, then install an app such as SetCPU or CPU Tuner to set the CPU clock to your liking.

I'm not sure about CM's kernel with the over-volting but I do know that Pershoots kernel can be overclocked to 979mhz without over-volting (Pershoot told me himself).

Well obviously.... But why the hell would you ever need to be running at 1.8ghz? The fact that you are always using a temp-specific profile method should show you that consistent 1.8ghz isn't good for the phone...
Okay so I uninstalled SetCPU last night and I'm going to run just the CM Settings CPU manager all day to see how it goes. Running like this:
ONDEMAND governor
Min CPU: 245 mhz
Max CPU: 1017 mhz
On nightly #19 also.
Okay so its midnight almost, and I'm at 13hrs unplugged and 52% battery still. Pretty general/light use, phone is just as snappy and the lack of a screen off profile doesn't seem to effect battery at all. Liking it so far! very interesting to see the screen off profile not mattering much.
SetCPU for me. I like to have a temperature and charging profile, to prevent the phone from overheating. Even at 1ghz the possibility exists, nice to have a backup incase.

With multiple tries... If you change the settings on one, it cancels the settings on the other... Maybe it's because you had set on boot enabled on both?
im going to run the CM tuner and uninstall Setcpu and see how it runs. i never thought about this but i do get that lag when i turn my screen on sometimes. im gonna miss having the profiles but ill see how it runs over the coarse of a couple days.

SetCPU app and it's effectiveness? Syndicate Frozen ROM

Hey there, I just a few days ago rooted and flashed the Syndicate Frozen rom and am not getting such good battery life...
I was wondering how big of a difference SetCpu makes on battery life/performance in general? With moderate/heavy use (internet browsing, facebook, email, txt messaging) how much should it improve battery life? am getting around 10hours at the moment with moderately light use... Is there any free alternative app that runs comparatively well?
I guess what I'm really asking is: is it worth it to buy setcpu, and will it make a dramatic difference on my battery life? This Rom is supposed to improve battery life, and I think I read is overclocked to 1.2... Will setcpu let me set this underclocked to 1,0 and then like 800 with screen off, 600 idle? Am new to the android thing [have had my EPIC only around 2 weeks today]
Thanks for any help!
Overclock widget does pretty much the same thing, and you're going to want to set something like
20mhz min 1 or 1.2ghz max
Then 100mhz min 400mhz max for screen off.
You can set the speed to.anything you want. If you want battery to be the best then.set it to 100/1000 on demand. If you emwant performance then 100/1200. Also I don't set profiles cause I was reading somewhere that they aren't good to use on any galaxy phone.

Nice info read up on it and yes you can set it anyway you want like stated above. I bought mine from the market to support the dev for the hard work involved in making setcpu, dont know if you know but it is free for xda members just search for setcpu. It is only $2.00 well worth the price so please support the dev if you can.

Don't expect it to magically give you another 4 hours up time. 1 extra hour would be high hopes.
I use SetCPU with the CPU set to 200/1000 and ondemand, and the battery life has improved GREATLY, well worth the $2 to support the Dev, IMO, even though XDA members get it free.
I've abandoned SetCPU and uninstalled it. Unnecessary consumption of system resources.
Same with any other user-space app/widget to control CPU speed scaling.
In the Bonsai ROM, the exact same capability, sans the profiles which I (and most people) don't use anyway, can be achieved by setting clock range and governor in /etc/init.d/24-cpufreq script. I expect that all the other OC kernels, if not every custom kernel, has a similar way to set CPU clock governor.
I have mine set to 100/1200 on demand, and it works well for the demands I put on it. Way low consumption at idle, but when I need something it instantly responds.
I routinely get 16-18 hours off the charger, and put it back on the charger with sometimes as much as 40% remaining, but as always YMMV. A lot of it has to do with the ROM, but I'd say that CPU scaling has realized a tangible gain for me.

Talking about Bonsai ROM tweaks on a Syndicate thread would be like me talking about BMW mods on a Honda forum. Either way, I looked around in the system folders and I can't find the 24-cpu file you're talking about. I upgraded yestereday from the 2.1 SyndicateROM to this, and for the first few hours, the ROM itself was definately quicker...I don't know if that's just because I came from 2.1 to 2.2, not to mention all the other 2.2 tweaks. After a few hours, I completely forgot that I could overclock this to 1.2Ghz. Installing SetCPU and bumping it to 1.2Ghz felt like just another jump. System resource consumption aside, it makes the phone all that much quicker while going between screen, apps list, closing apps, etc.
I could care less about battery life because I've learned to always have a charger around me since my days of the Moment, of hell, even my Treo's. I want fast, SetCPU is something I can see the difference in just from turning it on and off and seeing the differences.

Interesting: has anyone noticed min CPU freq has been lowered in 3.0.1.A.0.145

i just flashed 3.0.1.A.0.145 and the rooted system.img... something interesting... has anyone noticed min CPU freq has been lowered to 122Mhz (can be checked by SetCPU)... though 245Mhz is set as default using setcpu the user can select 122Mhz... i guess this means when there is low user activity the battery life should be more!
Such a simple concept. Great idea.

That seems to be the trick behind "Better Battery performence" from their changelog.
haha, but this don't solve teh problem... battery should live longer when you exactly use the phone a lot

actually if u go to see almost 60-80% of the time ur device will be in low battery state (screen off)... so i am sure this will make some difference...

ive just updated mine, but on 2.3.2 with setcpu i was running mine when the screen was turned off @ 122mhz!
but yes, the battery does last alot longer especially when you set the profiles up with priorities! i use mine alot in the morning and afternoon on the way home from work for music so during certain times ill setthe profile for the full 1ghz, then charging set a 1ghz but screen off it runs at 122mhz. ive noticed around 4 hours of increased battery life for my arc

oh even 2.3.2 had 122Mhz freq unlocked?
ah then i might have missed it... been testing a LOT of stuff related to X10 / Arc / Optimus One so might have got confused...
sorry!
yeah, least you know though
how reliable have you found setcpu? ive disabled the option "set at boot" and enabled all profiles but i find it not always kicking in when the profiles triggers are met and superuser access has been granted :s
