Sprint dropped a turd. Where's my EVO-2 ? - EVO 4G General

This is just unbelievable the crappy new device Sprint announced. Major fail. It is amazing, every tech site forum on the internet is all over this, criticizing it. I have never seen a new product hated so fast. Makes ya wonder if Sprint does any type of focus group testing before releasing a new product, because no one is gonna buy this turd. They will be giving this phone away in Happy Meals soon.
They just rip this a new one;

Nothing positive in this thread, pretty scathing reviews;

Another set of hilarious comments in the forum section at bottom;
http://www.phonedog.com/2011/02/07/k...t-this-spring/

I hope Sprint management is aware of the horse thrashing this craptastic device is getting reviewed as. They are out of touch with what the majority are looking for, news to confirm there will be an EVO 2 this Summer or sooner, or a CMDA Nexus phone, or a high end WinMo7 phone by HTC.

i agree!
I think we all are waiting for HTC to save us from this dS phone kids play.
And To bless us with a Evo 2 This summer!!

Sad thing is that like most corporate, they'll still try to force push that phone (mass advertising, etc...) to blind themselves of the truth: their new phone is a total fail.
With the money they'll put in the mass ads, they could use it to buy paper bags and put them on sprint's execs heads for making such terrible decisions.

Really Sprint? While Verizon is unleashing the iPhone your big reveal is an extra screen? Don't get me wrong, I have no desire for an iPhone, but why are you better than Verizon exactly?
I have been defending Sprint for a while now, but I may just give up if they continue to kick themselves in the balls at every turn.
Plus..lol at this from the Gizmodo review:
"Kyocera is pushing as a pseudo-tablet. It's rectangular, yes, and uses electricity, but beyond this it has virtually no commonality with an actual tablet."

WTF is going on ?? (Calling for death of Nexus One))

http://newstrendstoday.com/nexus-1-...the-3g-screen-problems-on-the-nexus-one/03117
Some users say they have trouble calibrating the touch screen on the Nexus One, the Google smartphone.
The first steps of Google and their Nexus One on the smartphone market does not seem as peaceful as what the Internet giant could wait. After linkage problems encountered on the 3G network T-Mobile in the United States, some users are pointing the finger at the screen of their device.
Android forums on Google, as stated by our colleagues from Engadget, there are reports of problems calibrating the touch screen One of the Nexus. They would start to feel the phone and he would put it to sleep, then on again to resolve them. Google provides to address these problems, they come from a software bug will be resolved by a patch. If the material is concerned, HTC, manufacturer of the Nexus One, might have to intervene under the warranty.
For its first week of marketing, Nexus One has sold 20 000 copies in the United States. A rather low figure who led Google to drop the $ 100 price of the device.

http://www.nytimes.com/external/gig...m-should-google-kill-the-nexus-one-60352.html
Google this morning postponed the launch of two Android handsets in China in a clear indication that the company’s rift with Beijing threatens its booming mobile business. Meanwhile, the Nexus One has seen lackluster sales amid widespread complaints of technical glitches. So with Android’s future in China uncertain, and problems mounting with Google’s decision to build and sell the ideal Android phone — the Nexus One – is it too early to wonder whether Google will pull the plug on its flagship phone?
Google indefinitely pushed back the launch of two handsets slated to debut tomorrow from China Unicom, dramatically upping the ante in its high-profile showdown with the Chinese government. As Om noted last week, China accounts for more 638 million wireless users, and handset sales are expected to grow by 21 percent this year alone. And the market could be especially ripe for Android given its support by some key players in the region: members of Google’s Open Handset Alliance include operators China Mobile and China Telecom as well as Huawei and ZTE.
While a governmental crackdown could lead to versions of the open-source OS that are far less integrated with Google’s mobile apps, the escalating conflict means that Google will be unable to control the evolution of Android in China. And it surely closes the door on any potential Chinese sales of the Nexus One — throwing yet another roadblock at the struggling handset.
Google appears to have overreached in launching its own branded handset. The search giant was clearly unprepared to deal with the customer service issues that inevitably arise in the retailing business, and splashy headlines of customer backlash are tarnishing its highly respected brand.
The company has obviously overestimated demand for an “official” Google phone, selling just 20,000 handsets in the first week it was out, and its strategy of competing against its handset and carrier partners has limited upside and risks losing the widespread support that has fueled Android’s growth. It may be unfair to predict doom for a handset that came to market just two weeks ago, but it’s becoming clear that taking on the role of mobile retailer was a mistake for Google. It’s too early to predict that Google will kill the Nexus One, but it’s not too early to wonder whether it should.

Ive been a techy most of my life. Ive been on nerd bomber and geek forums since 97 followed every bit of Tech I could get my hands on since that time.....I am having a miserable time trying to find another piece of consumer electronic with this many "news sources" hell bent on seeing it fail.
Not windows ME , Not XBOX 1 , Not Nextel , Not Wii....nothing.
Im baffled as to wtf is going on.
I thought I was the only one who noticed all the negative attention google is getting. I freakin love this phone. There is nothing that will make me think this isn't the best phone I've had, ever.

So what is it ?
Is fanboyism that strong ?
Are people THAT pissed at Google for not giving it away free and saving them from telecoms...or
Are Apple/MS/Palm lining writers pockets ?
Im by no means saying Google isnt having a multitude of problems. On 2 big fronts right now....but the tone of these articles is blatantly biased.
Perhaps people are scared of something different. Google is the punk kid to Apple's primp and proper 'young adult'. They must be heathens.
Huh?
its about Google completely miscalculating the process of selling this product via their site.
Its about Google releasing a product not ready for consumption.
Its about a failed marketing ploy....(ie: a lack of, ...trying to create a mystique and engender a word of mouth wildfire.....backfiring, as the word of mouth has been primarily about the issues with the device.
What does fanboyism have to do with any of this?
Personally, I don't think I would "listen" to a website review and analysis that can't even form a proper sentence. That first article was seriously hard to read, and didn't make sense for about 50% of it.
None-the-less some of the tech community loves to hate the phone. Fanboys, or whatever may have you, they are not being fair or balanced in the coverage. Granted, we are a biased community, but we are also one of the most critical as well. I haven't seen such love for a phone on XDA ever! Usually, we are all sitting around saying we can't wait for it to be properly unlocked so we can flash some crazy cooked ROMs so the phone doesn't suck too bad. Instead, many are wondering whether it is even worth rooting the phone(and eventually flashing custom SPLs) because stock already is so damn good!
Here is the deal, IMO, given that Android is bursting onto the scene right now, and starting to hit that tipping point, just ignore it! By the end of this year, over half the available smartphones on the market will be Android. And that is the real reason for the outcry. There is a lot of money at stake, and many tech publications have owners/sponsors they need to keep happy. Google is not known for being a very profitable advertiser for websites(great for small sites, but big ones make much more money off a true sponsor), and Google doesn't and isn't willing to do that.
But those sites will, given time, have to come around. If they do not, they run the very real risk of allienating their following, and in turn losing out on advertising dollars because they are no longer the hot site. Engadget, and the such, have to keep on top of and out in front of the trendy wave, or they are screwed.

I'm not talking about Engadget perse an obviously biased review... im talking about say the average daily return of say a google search of Nexus One which brings predominantly a litany of commentary of.the problems google and.customers are having with the device.

I'm pretty sure Google only lowered the price for an upgraded plan on T-Mobile because of the network issues that were occurring on their service. That statement from the article is misleading because the original prices are still in place aside from a $100 reduction for upgrading on T-Mobile.
I've also noticed a lot of negative publicity, more so than other things. I think with something this big, there's bound to be more scrutinizing going on than usual. You've got the best hardware spec'd phone releasing on the market, on the newest Android platform (basically ready for mainstream consumption), with Google selling it (of all companies).
On the 20,000 N1's sold.
I dont see Google giving up on the N1.
The day Vodafone sold 50,000 iPhones in Europe, the tech-press was quick to jump on comparisons with the 20k N1 sale figure. This is so wrong, it ain't even funny.
The online sales model is
a. New
b. Untested
c. Unique
On account of #a and #b above, Google would not have pegged a very large demand figure for the first month of the N1. The strategy they've adopted will take time to settle in, and I'm sure they're prepared to do that. The N1, as they've repeatedly stated, is the -first- in what will be a long series of phones, and the N1 online sales figure will be viewed as a test case by Google, not as an indictment of the model's success/failure.
Agreed, Google has not hyped up the N1 as much as they ought to have done. As others have pointed out before, the Moto Droid's marketing campaign has done much more for Android than the N1's launch has done, and for that, Google alone is to blame. Forget comparisons to phones of a fruity nature, the N1's launch and subsequent marketing is disappointing even against other Android devices.
Here's something for the tech-press to chew on though.
What would've happened, had Google launched this (admittedly) superphone for $179 in brick-and-mortar stores, whether their own or in T-Mobile's and other networks' stores? What would the number have been then?
I don't see where you're getting the idea that everybody is hell bent on seeing the Nexus One fail.
I've had "nexus one" in the news and weather widget since day one, so I get just about anything with those two words in it as a news article. Yes, there are a few iPhone fan boy web sites out there that just wont admit the N1 is a great phone. But by and large, after the first week, and after other writers have had time to spend with the N1, they always like it, and a few have even dumped their iPhones for it.
The rest (and vast majority) of the articles out there are pointing out Google's major miscalculations with regards to the launch, shipping, and especially support of the Nexus One. They just weren't ready.
Now, since Google and the Nexus One are getting SO much press attention, any little problem the phone encounters, whether it be HTC's fault, Tmo's, or Googles, is getting sent out on BLAST.
It's Google that screwed up. Not the Nexus One. And nobody is calling for it's death, save for a couple loser fan boys.
From what ive seen and heard (like my tech podcasts) lots of people are 'reviewing' the phone with out actually getting their hands on it to test it for themselves. There does appear to be a significant amount of bad press for what seems like no real reason.
Oddly on the GDGT podcast they talk about the nexus one, the first 30seconds of the review they talk about how awesome the phone is and its the best thing they have used since the iphone, and then they spend the remaining 30minutes of the review highlighting all of its faults?! Odd!
Nevermind, think its probably just die hard iphone fan bois coming up with negative press. bah.
There is definitely some biased reviews out there from people obviously bent on not showing the whole truth or just completely stating b.s.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/187147/what_google_must_learn_from_its_nexus_one_troubles.html
When the Nexus One was announced, I was disappointed, since there were just a few improvements over existing Android devices. The fact that Google was selling the device directly over its Web site seemed to be much ado about nothing, given that buyers had to sign a T-Mobile contract to use it. Plus, it's not as if Web sales is a new idea.

This is the best phone i ever had. My friends with iphones are shocked by how good it is. Iphone become a history on nexus release. Paid reviews will be popping everywhere against Nexus one.
I never had any problems. Market forces do not want google succeding in delivering a better product than existing technologies of windows and iphone.

Thanks Google and HTC for making such a wonderful phone.

This has been my experience also. I've had die-hard apple fans gush over my nexus one. No joke. People see it, ask to play with it, and then they want it. Now, if google would only allow family plan upgrades.... I've had multiple friends who have family plans say that they would order it without hesitation if they could use their upgrades.

You won't understand unless you are experiencing the problems. I am not a Engadget fan at all but this time I am very glad that they covered it and put some pressure to Google. I am really frustrated about the touch screen issue.
I would of had ordered the nexus one the day it came out, but had issues with tmobile. Because no one at tmobile had a clue what was going on, and trying to fix my account, so i could order the phone for a reduced cost is not googles fault its tmobiles! i talked to 11 different people including 2 supervisors. they all are to dumb to look at my paperwork in the system to realize i got an upgrade 12 months prior when i got my g1. the people at tmobile store are to dumb to update the system. oops!!!!
i received the phone 5 days after the inital release, thought it was bs to pay 379, but thats what i paid for the g1 and its half of the hardware in the n1. i took it out of the box, started it up to make sure it worked. then rooted it!!!!
there may be a glitch here or there, which is not a big deal. its a brand new version of android, which no other phones have currently. so obviously there will be a few complaints. but when thousands of people are using a new device, they happen to find a few more problems then a few hundred. its just common sence.
those people that have an issue take a chill pill, this phone has great hardware on it, and has a great operating system. my phone has better hardware on it then some of my friends labtops...... and what did i pay..... 279 compared to what they paid for their labtops....
so regardless of what people say, i am a big fan of android!!!! have been since the day i picked it up and found out it was a linux kernal. thats the reason i bought my g1. but it was laggy, and slow, and didn't have a headphone jack. i had to wait a year for the n1 to come out, but it finally did. so everyone that has an issue with the N1 then go f*** yourself!!!!! ill be waiting happily for android 3.0 to come out!!!!

Maybe I need to capitalize the N in nexus one. Because my widget and going online has pointed to almost exclusively negative statements about the N1.
There was an explosion of articles based on Engadgets reviews...there was another explosion after that ridiculous screen test ...then another batch with the 3G issues.
Very few places are givig the N1 a fair shake. Ars technica , Diggnation/Kevin Rose , Leo Laporte being the only ones I can name that seemed either unbiased or admitted any bias.
Engadget , Boygenius ,TechCrunch,PC ,World etc have given some bizarre reviews and baseless feedback.

The Class Action is great, what else can we do?

As someone else said, imagine what would happen if the iPhone's GPS didnt work, so why is Android held to a lower standard? Why are we supposed to accept whatever we are given, regardless of what we are promised? The SGS and iPhone 4 cost about the same amount, but we, as Android owners are supposed to just be grateful for anything that we get even when its less than promised?Samsung is already "rumored" to be planning our phone's successor. Thats bull****, we dont deserve to be treated like this. I love the Class Action Suit, but does anyone have any other creative ideas to not only help out current SGS owners but also ruin possible SGS 4G prospects? Samsung needs to be taught that we wont just be grateful for whatever we get, we demand what we are promised, we demand what we pay for; this is only reasonable.
A company should at least have some concern for their consumers, even if its barely recognizable. Samsung left us with a broken device we paid handsomely for, they have 0 concern for us. So I pray to whoever is listening up there that the SGS 4G fails miserably. If I knew how, Id make and circulate a Facebook page with just a couple of sentences outlining the case against Samsung. Even those who dont know much about Android would pay attention to a facebook page saying Samsung has ripped off SGS consumers, so avoid any Samsung phone at all costs, there are plenty of great alternatives. Maybe there is a more effective avenue, maybe we could even pursue multiple avenues. The goal is to bring attention to the shortcomings of the SGS we currently have, it deserves Samsung's attention. And now is the time, while the class action is getting attention, lets pile it on. Im happy to do what I can, im just not sure what to do. Any ideas?
kinda like the facebook page idea. I hate that Samsung doent give a **** about selling us a broken phone, even if they said they were really sorry itd be ok if they didnt fix it. Not only are they pricks, they're dicks too.
Well, debut day of Vibrant 4G or Successor is coming up. There will be people showing up to buy them. They will be watching its debut day. There will also be press and reviewers about its debut. Thus, if you have a crew of buddies willing to help you out in boycotting their Vibrant 4G or any of the coming Galaxy S product with picket signs and banners for in front of the local stores with drums and horns. Have your buddies call up local news and it will make it to some news since people will wonder what is going on... Resist if they give you and your buddies Vibrant 4G to shut you guys up. Too bad we just missed the CES. With all those press there, that would have been perfect! We need to organize into big group to do this more effectively even if lawsuit takes forever.
This will get them to know how angry we are about this "Froyogate"
Also, maybe somebody needs to make a boycott app for ALL Galaxy S product.

Corporations want to maximize their profits, both for themselves and their shareholders. Thus, this shouldn't come as a surprise.
A tipster has come forward and said that Samsung is holding back the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update from the T-Mobile Vibrant (Samsung Galaxy S variant) because they are afraid that such an update will impact sales of their upcoming Samsung Vibrant 4G Plus.
Reportedly, the new device is little different than the original Vibrant. In addition to the original Vibrant, the Vibrant 4G Plus has a front-facing camera, Android 2.2, and HSDPA+ 21 support.
Here's what the tipster said:
Some disturbing things have happened the last week or so concerning our “Vibrant”. Samsung has NOT allowed us to push the update OTA for 2.2 because they feel it will decrease the value of the upcoming Vibrant4G +. While from a marketing aspect i totally understand, as the Vibrant 4G is what the original Vibrant should have been in the 1st place. But to shun off and bold face lie to customers is NOT what T-Mobile is about.

Furthermore, if Froyo works in "Vibrant 4G" - another product of Vibrant, this means it should be already for distribution for the Vibrant 3G version with minor changes.
I like the sound of all of this. I can't stand the idea that samsung suffers no repercussions for selling so many broken phones. Froyo or no froyo, the phones gps is broken, samsung shouldn't have the option to not fix it, it's INSANE
I thought that if you demonstrate to T-Mobile that the official Samsung GPS Tool fails, they would consider it defective and send for a replacement. Don't crucify me if I'm wrong, I haven't dealt with either companies.
My Samsung Vibrant came hardware locked, with faulty GPS. Samsung told me it wasn't there problem (no warranty because I brought it into Canada without an "international warranty"). Have I thought about a class action suit? Nope. I dunno, maybe it's because I'm Canadian or something, but I've just tried to fix my own problems. It's not the first product that's let me down, and I don't expect some lawyer to make it all better. Eventually the awesome people on this forum came up with a fix for the hardware lock. Then they brewed up roms based on the 2.2 leaks. Then a hardware GPS fix, combined with new software updates and now my GPS locks on in under 15s.
So what have I learned from all of this? I won't be purchasing a Samsung phone again. They've lost a customer. I vote with my wallet, not by signing some e-petition, or joining a Facebook group.
Do you really think a class action would change anything? Even if you are successful, you'll probably just get a credit towards your next Samsung purchase, or a refund on the cost of the GPS chip.
Let them know how you feel, and that you won't purchase any of their products in the future, and will be advising friends/family to do the same. kobesabi has outlined some great ways to let them know.

I understand your feelings. And I think most people in here is of the mindset that we can fix our phones better than Samsung. What is going on here is a movement towards holding Samsung to their promises. They are in the OHA and therefor are legally bound to release the Source Code for the Vibrant. The second thing is that they promised multiple times throughout the last year that they would release Froyo to the US Galaxy S phones, and they didn't. If you vote by your wallet that is OK. How much do you spend on buying a new phone? With the current pricing around $500 without contract. If one person doesn't give Samsung their $500, Samsung doesn't care. If all the people on XDA doesn't give them $500, Samsung still won't care. However if we can get enough people to realize that Samsung is not a good company to buy from as they have TERRIBLE software support for their phones, if we could get 100,000 people at first, that is $50 million, which is still just a drop in the bucket for them, but that is surely more painful than $500. This is to try to make Samsung take responsibility for their products.
Agreed, Samsung should be held to the agreements made regarding their source code. I also agree that people should be informed Samsung as a company, and their poor customer relation choices.
I just think a Class Action is the wrong way to do it

Here's one more thing we can do:
Post bad reviews of Samsung Galaxy phones on all online retailer web sites that sell them. Got an Amazon account? Post feedback there and drive this phone's rating down it gets Samsung's attention and warns potential buyers about buying a product that they will most likely be dissatisfied with once they realize that GPS is marginally functional and that it's running now outdated version of Android with no update in sight. Do the same on Tiger Direct, NewEgg and whoever else sells this phone.
Collectively we can definitely make Samsung take notice.

Any ideas?

Why Do Phone Manufacturers Make so Many Models?

Why do manufacturers pump out so many phones, with none making a real name for themselves? It seems like if HTC released maybe three phones, and every network could have them, they would get some momentum, and a franchise product; a "Name" for themselves. Because no manufacturer does this, I don't think there will ever be an Android to stand up sales wise with the iPhone.
Imo, back in June, HTC should have used the Evo name and ran with it:
Evo
Evo Compact (the Incredible)
Evo Shift
Then once a year or even bi-yearly, the whole line is updated for all carriers with sequential numbers added to the end, ala apple. Does this not seem like a better model? It must not be I assume, because it's not what is being done... but I feel like with the Evo and Incredible being such great phones they would really gain significant traction had they had similar names, and been available on all networks... Instead there is Evo, Incredible, Atria, Thunderbolt, Pyramid, etc. Really confusing.
well..
verizon is trying that with the "droid" name... notice how many have that? they have put a lot of branding to that brandname... "droid"
TMobile has the brand "mytouch"
rumor is ..
sprint will work with the "EVO" branding. EVO and EVO Shift.
Yeah, thats true, and I guess I might would add the shift to my above lineup, so they have a keyboard model... but what I meant, and i just realized I didn't make it obvious in my post was, why do they send basically the same phone with a slightly altered design and different name to different carriers, as opposed to releasing one line up to all?
Edit: So from rereading what you said, it seems like the carrier has a big say in what the name of the phone is? Or is it up to the manufacturer?
i would guess.. that the carriers have a large say in the names.
why would they make a few changes? again this is my guess.
it is a marketing thing... for PRICE specials....
if all 4 carriers had the exact same phone... then they loose some "identity". think of Yukon, Suburban, Escalade, Tahoe.
also..if one carrier has one on sale then the others will have to match the price. If not then the customers might feel a little cheated.
if different name or slight look change, the no longer have to match the price. Most dont know that they are the same; again look at the SUV example i gave.
Think about when Walmart has a Samsung LCD tv on sale.. it is model XY2100. Best Buy has the same samsung LCD XY2100B. they have the exact same specs, but the Best Buy has a chrome panel. Sorry no price match.
I 2nd this big time.
I'm in complete agreement with this OP, and in fact was thinking the exact same thing the other day.
Android has such a confusing and fragmented ecosystem that's it's not funny. I believe this is a result of the "young & wild" thinking behind the business model of the original Open Handset Alliance that Google helped form during Anrdroid's inception. Google came forth with a set of rules, but were perhaps a little too loose on their requirements. They made a set of hardware parameters that Android phones "should" utilize. And in a desperate attempt to become relevant during the iphone craze of the last few years, said "have at it, go build some Androids".
I understand the thinking behind such a model, as not everyone needs, or can afford a high end device i.e., Evo, Incredible, Droid X etc. Some people want to spend $100 or less and have a data enabled phone without giant touch screens, and 5+ MP camera functions. They just want to text, and download ringtones etc, as this is economically viable.
This model has some major pitfalls however, being that; 1) With marketing ploys like Verizon's "Droid", & 2) A new low end Android phone coming out every month -
Android as a whole becomes more and more anonymous and confusing to the average consumer. A lot of people are already walking around asking, "What the hell is Android anyway?" They know they want a smart phone, or maybe even the ubiquitous iPhone like all of their friends and family have... They hear about Android, and how cool and open it is, then go to purchase one from ATT, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Tmobile, Etc... WTF, who to go with, and now, which phone! Wait, what do you mean I can only get the Galaxy Captivate on ATT? Why can I only get the Evo on Sprint, and the G2 on TMO?
Not a very fluid purchase, and then to find out that your precious phone won't be receiving the latest OS updates becomes the nail in the coffin.
This is the biggest thing I've noticed about Android since purchasing my Evo in June. If I didn't have some technical know how, and the support of XDA, my Evo would be near obsolete already. However, I am not the "average" consumer, I love to hack things. Most people want a good phone that will last a year or two, and not have to feel buyer's remorse every few months when a better and faster device hits the shelves.
You could make the same argument about Apple devices with their yearly refresh, and most technology for that matter but I feel the impact of this phenomenon may be greatest with Android... It's almost as if the marketing gurus at all the big telco's want to cram as much of this stuff out into the public, before we realize what's going on, and don't want it anymore.
I love Android, and my Evo is a good phone (not great), but I clearly see behind their marketing fluff, and their poorly disguised ecosystem if you can call it that.
Don't even get me started on the failure that is the Android Market.... Ugh...
What a messy, clusterf¨©k. An unorganized, unregulated, bloated piece of $Free.99 garbage. Google seems to actually encourage "free w/ads" apps over developers making GOOD apps, and getting paid for them!
Not to mention the lack of security, repetition, and licensing infringement that runs rampant throughout. This may seem off topic, but it all ties in to the lack of standardization that plagues Google, and Android as a whole.
If I were Google's CEO, I would clamp down fast in a clear and concise manner with Motorola, HTC and LG etc, and call for better hardware standardization, less marketing fluff, and actually give Devs a reason to want to get involved with the Android market. One way of doing this would be to stop selling old hardware (read, crappy) repackaged in a new phone.
Granted, Android sales are huge right now, but if they stay on this rocky path, the Big G may soon find themselves in a sales plateau, if not on their way to a canyon. They set out to be different, which is good, but sometimes different ends up being strange.
to cater to everyones needs
Most people I know usually refer HTC brand as the Cadillac of phones.
And @Mitch...like apple dont have 1000's of pointless and useless apps and without a option to refund.

No pay day yet. This is Sammy's way of confessing they have been trying to do it their way instead of please the customer for too long.
It still remains to be seen what they actually DO about it.
We all know what pathway good intentions paved =]
The bottom line is until sammy gets the carriers in line, and froyo gets released before its 1st birthday! People will rant with good reason. Btw gingerbread has been out for like 3 months! We have a top of the line device running an os from 2009. Honestly I love the hardware but I can't handle this bad os support.

Whoever even buys another Samsung flagship phone with the belief that they learned their lesson deserves what they are going to get and shouldn't complain anymore. If you haven't realized what their intent is, which is maximum profit with the least effort, while actually making it seem like they kind of care with PR rep's that promise things that they cant' actually commit to. INB4C
My friend asked me what phone he should buy, and looked at the Galaxy S2 and the Motorola Atrix. It was a no brainer which phone was the winner. Go Atrix! Pre-ordered and waiting! He was waiting for a nice dual core phone, but after the mess he has heard from me with Samsung, he said he definitely doesn't want to go through the same thing. To be honest, this crap is making me sick to my stomach just talking about anymore, cause we've all been crapped on, and it doesn't feel nice.
I'm not surprised in the least that Samsung would think that this meaningless gesture would diffuse this issue, but I'm honestly SHOCKED that "Xda leaders" would put any thought into this. I suspect they're making money off this, somehow.
This site has lost its way badly.
At least it's a start and shows Samsung at least recognizes they've pissed off some people. It's better than what they've been doing which has been a whole lot of nothing.

I HEARD... Samsung sent John to distract attention from the fact that they are currently in hostage negotiations with Sprint, the suitcase full of cash is in transit, and Noobnl has the code to unlock it, but he refuses to share it with anyone because he only cares about glory, so he is meeting John at sxsw to listen to crappy emo music and make the handoff. And THEN Sprint will begin work on adding SprintID and a new, improved, constant Nascar streaming app, which can in no way be turned off. Oh, and HTC assassins are waiting there to shoot Noob so that they can still claim that the EVO is the flagship phone, and artificially make supply of the phone backordered to give the impression to the common consumer that it is not a giant POS. Did I miss anything?

Honestly, this was my first Samsung phone in about ten years is so far, it's my last.
It's not the lack of Froyo, this is just a simple annoyance. What killed it is GPS that works like crap, barely functioning accelorometer, retarded hardcoded GPS accuracy refusal to do anything about these two issues. I have a bad feeling that the last bug isn't a bug at all, but an attempt to cover up poorly functioning GPS on this phone. If I was Colbert, I'd wag my finger at them.

Hi I'm samsungjohn, just wanted to let you guys know that I'm just using this pr to gain rank within the amsung corporation. I figured if I was able to convince everyone to stick with samsung and to keep buying samsung, that I will be soon promoted. In reality I am jus doing this for a job. I don't even own a samsung phone. I own an LG, but thank you for listening to me and allowing me to pull your strings....Public Actions speak louder than words....oh and by the way. The Truth Is What You Make It, and Who You get To Believe In It.
No worries I'm just poking fun at this all. If people have gotten offended by it then the truth lies within the offended. Lol
now if Samsung were to really/officially be changing fo the people they would skip over froyo and be the first to update every galaxy s series to gingerbread. Or at least get froyo out and gingerbread soon after.
And powers at be, feel free to delete or modify this if you like. I've already gotten past the point of anger, and this whole samsung update bs is just a joke to me now. Samsung makes great dumb phones but a smart phone is just isn't worth it.
Too late, too slow, too little.
Samsung unfortunately is still working on the feature-phone timelines. What they (and most other android phone makers, with the possible exception of HTC) seem to not quite understand is that these smartphones are true computers now, and need to be treated as such. The OS is an integral part of phone, perhaps the most important part, and people will not tolerate a company that refuses to update an OS that both has critical bugs (and yes, the GPS bug is a CRITICAL bug), and appears incapable of utilizing the hardware it's surrounded by. It's like Microsoft refusing to repair a Windows bug that kept all printers only printing in black and white. It's almost worse that the hardware is so good, and is being crippled by a poorly customized OS (like tantalus, nearby but unreachable relief is far worse than no possibility of relief at all).
It's going to take a really big step to mollify those that have been burned by this generation of samsung's smartphones. Samsung, if your listening. You've pissed off many of your most important phone buyers. These are the people who less tech-savvy people ask for advice on phones, and for every 1 XDA member offended by your apparent lack of desire to properly support your equipment, you probably lose at least 10 referral sales to companies like HTC.
My recommendation, at least open the source code for the devs to look at, and if you're having software quality problems (and that's the reason you can't get froyo out the door), invite some of the best devs to take a look at the proprietary modules that you're having problems with. Work with the community and you may maintain some degree of support for your next generation of phones. But keep trying to astroturf them, or worse yet, pull a Behold 2 on them, and watch out as your current market lead could easily change next generation.

Spread the love! New HTC commercial

Guys and girls, it would be nice if we all go watch new HTC commercial, like it, favorite and share :highfive:
Let's get this puppy rolling!
It's good to remind that this commercial actually features the HTC One in video, the HTC One (M7) device is used throughout the film and in the car wash section RDJ asks to boost the options in which the speakers volume is increased considerably
Also seems no one else noticed this, but check out the acronyms passing fast at the end of the video
there are many and it's genius, here is one of them
HTC: Hawaiian Tickle Ceremony
Associating with RDJ is a great idea. He appeals to a wide and varied demographic. With any marketing the message is only a part of a campaign. The other, and arguably more important, is quantity of impressions, repetition of the message, and breadth of its delivery.
In its most daring effort yet to stay in league with Apple and Samsung, HTC announced a massive marketing campaign Monday starring "Iron Man" actor Robert Downey Jr. The Taiwanese phone maker confirmed it has signed Downey to a two-year deal, which is reportedly worth $12 million. The new campaign, called "Change," is intended to get consumers talking about HTC once again. The company said the campaign will last at least two years and cost about $1 billion -- the same as HTC's global marketing budget last year.
http://www.latimes.com/business/tec...y-marketing-campaign-20130812,0,1978367.story
HTC's spending the same as they did last year ($500MM annually) over the next two years with the RDJ campaign. Motorola's spending that just to launch the Moto X. So time will tell if a really clever campaign with a well-recognized spokesperson will accomplish HTC's objective. And that objective isn't to make the current faithful like them more it's to regain market share lost to other smartphone companies. And that group needs to see and remember the message (and of course HTC) which is going to be a challenge with HTC’s budget.
I love this new ad campaign!
That was great. Fantastic production value and acting - this is a great campaign, awesome to see from HTC

Really nice video from Placebo and the One seems to be spot on, although it is kind of a negative representative of technology (even bad publicity is good ). One thing bothers me: i can't seem to find the nudity augmenting app in google.store. Anyone?!
You guys are kind of missing the point of what the new campaign needs to do and are expressing your "feelings" toward it. In Q2 there were 45% more smartphones sold then last year. HTC’s Q2 revenue was down 28%. So something’s caused/causing HTC to lose customers in a burgeoning market at a faster rate than their competitors (LG and Sony’s YOY market share improved in Q2). Paying RDJ $6MM a year for two years and coming up with an edgy offbeat campaign is designed to reverse that trend and its success solely lies in how much additional revenue and market share HTC gains because of it.
So who buy’s (or doesn’t buy) HTC’s phones?
People that have followed them since the G1, like their products, consider themselves loyal to the brand, or like to align with the "underdog" and consider themselves contrarians (HTC as the "anti" Samsung).
People who are aware of HTC, may have lost track of them, and are neutral toward owning an HTC phone.
People who don't know HTC (unaided awareness), don’t really follow technology on the whole, view a smartphone dispassionately (it’s a tool), and buy what they like based on what’s available at their two-year contract renewal.
People that don’t like HTC. They may have had a bad experience, be loyal to another brand, or simply decided that, compared to other choices, they don’t like HTC or their products.
I’d assume the majority in this forum are heavily weighted to category 1 with some people who either found or came back to HTC because of the One which are in category 2. For those groups, since their already loyal and aware and probably bought the One, the advertising campaign is simply a “feel good” and won’t do anything to help HTC meet its objectives. Once a brand (any brand) has poisoned a customer marketing alone statistically doesn’t get them to come back so there won’t be a lot of category 4 purchasers converted because of the campaign.
So category 3 is the biggest opportunity. That and elevating the opinion of HTC and propensity to buy for those in category 2. The success of the campaign rests on how well it appeals to those two categories and will be measured by a reversal in HTC’s decline. So HTC loyalists can “love” the campaign and people can comment on its innovativeness but the only thing that matters is whether or not it brings in new customers and revenue. It's not going to have an impact in Q3 because it's almost over and HTC's projecting their first loss for that quarter. So we won't know how effective the campaign is (or is starting to be, it runs for two years) until the end of Q4. But there will be a slew of campaigns running pre-holiday including the LG G2, Moto X, SGS4 (it's still new to people that are using older phones), Note 3, Sony Honomi, and iP5s/c. So there's lot of messaging that HTC's campaign will be competing against and Apple and Samsung do a lot of saturation which is particularly hard to be memorable against because repetition trumps the creative in driving awareness.
Nice!! HTC is doing a much better job with advertising this device. After I bought my One, three of the people I talked to about it's first words were "Oh I just saw a commercial for that!" That has NEVER been the case with HTC before! Great phone, deserves their marketing attention.
I honestly can't say I enjoyed the ad... I wish it were more minimalist.
It fits really well with rdj personality, it's really different for an advert, catches attention, gets people talking. I think its really clever advert. I honestly can't think of a better way to use RDJ, follow-up adverts will probably include him using the phone of something simialr, this is definitely HTC on the right track

Alright, at least two people who I know watched the ad went on ebay and brought their own one. I'd put them into category 3. I'm impressed. RDJ is a gift and a curse. A gift because it'll create a lot of attention for the campaign. A curse because if all people talk about and remember are those "RDJ commercials” as opposed to "HTC's new commercials" it'll do squat for HTC and win awards on the "creative" side and fail miserably on the "effectiveness (EG: revenue)" side. In advertising/marketing you never want the creative to upstage or overpower the product/service it’s there to support. I showed the ad to my "category 3" non-geek friends without any intro. When it was over I asked "what was it for?" None of them knew. Hardly a relevant focus group but interesting nonetheless.
