Just got the girlfriend a Dx and pushed her contacts over to her phone via a cellbrite, now I want to back them up to her gmail acct so we can root and flash then restore her contacts without backup assistance. How would I get these contacts to sync to her gmail?
I'm not sure how to backup them to GMail specifically, but you can back them up to your SD card.
You can also back them up to your Google Account by enabling backup in privacy.
Contacts -> Settings -> Import/Export -> Export to SD Card
After you export your contacts to your SD card, you simple import them back in after a ROM install ect.
Yea I forgot about backing them up on the sd card.

Why don't you just activate the "Sync Contacts" in the Google account settings of the DX?

Open your contacs in your phone then click options then click "more" then click "Import/Export" the click "Export to SD Card". That will export your contacts to your sdcard. Then do the exact same thing again but select "Import to SD Card" and it will give you the option whether to save it on the Phone or your gmail account.
Make sure the Gmail account is already setup in your phone before doing the instructions above . This worked for me.
Is this possible?
Would be great to avoid ever getting duplicates etc...
back up your phone contacts to SD card....then delete your phone contacts.
Then import the backup you created and select import and google contacts they should then start sycing to your gmail account
hope this helps

Thanks, but will the newly imported contacts end up in gmail??? Won't they just end up in phone again (as it was originally)?
No cause you are importing as google contacts so they will sync with gmail contacts

the only downside i see to this is that some of the contact's options are not available to google contacts. for example you can't set personal ringtone to google contact..

Could you add a phone contact "tab" later if you want?

Bump. Still wondering... Thanks
My nexus s put 3 of each of my contacts on it and I was just wondering is there any way of deleting more than one contact at a time?
Do it from your gmail account.
google.com/contacts
You can clear data on contacts or search market for delete contacts

Contact Remover from the Market. Free. Easy.
you can go to contacts then menu and hit delete then select all.

Hm, I don't see a delete button after hitting Menu in the Contact list.
Sounds like you pulled the contacts from your sim card. If they have already synced what I recommend is logging into your gmail account. Then go to contacts, you can merge contacts. So if you have 3 contacts for each person merge them and edit them to be nice and pretty.
While doing this I would recommend having auto sync turned off on the phone. My preference is then to just do a factory reset on the phone. It will then pull the contacts from your google account.
There are other ways to do it, but this worked well for me. The bonehead at the Best Buy mobile store decided to import my contacts from my sim. I told her not to and instead of clearing it out she left it.
I was furious and explained to her I just came in here with a G1, why on earth would you import from my sim when you know it will just sync from my google account?
Factory reset is retarded. Just clear data under contacts or use one of the many alloys apps mentioned here. You don't need to even do that though because the sync will fix it.

Almost as retarded as installing an app to clear contacts? My assumption is that the poster just got the phone and imported form the sim so there is really no harm. It takes only a couple minutes to get everything back in place. It's pretty painless.
Just go on your computer to gmail, clean up all your contacts under my contacts, and let the auto sync work its magic.
Hi all,
Is it possible to sync google, Outlook and phone contacts in order to have the same information?

I would sync all phone contacts to google, then export outlook contacts and import it into google contacts. Now you have all your contacts saved in the cloud and can be synced to you phone easily!

FWIW, I"m STILL looking for a good way to really SYNC without exporting. So good luck!
I always save my contacs in the sd card. If i change roms i dont worry about to loose my contacs because there are saved in the sd card. This is the way i do it.
Phone, menu, people, menu, import/export, and choose export to sd card. And then if you do something and need to add your contacs, you just have to do this, phone, menu, people, menu, import/export, and choose import from sd card.
Did not know about the export to SD card thank you...

I have my phone set to sync contacts with gmail but it does not. How can I get it to sync properly???
have you uploaded contacts to your gmail account?
if not: 1. export contacts to sdcard 2. import contacts from sdcard, then you got several options. select google.
That did it! Thanks a million.
