My nexus s put 3 of each of my contacts on it and I was just wondering is there any way of deleting more than one contact at a time?
Do it from your gmail account.
google.com/contacts
You can clear data on contacts or search market for delete contacts

Contact Remover from the Market. Free. Easy.
you can go to contacts then menu and hit delete then select all.

Hm, I don't see a delete button after hitting Menu in the Contact list.
Sounds like you pulled the contacts from your sim card. If they have already synced what I recommend is logging into your gmail account. Then go to contacts, you can merge contacts. So if you have 3 contacts for each person merge them and edit them to be nice and pretty.
While doing this I would recommend having auto sync turned off on the phone. My preference is then to just do a factory reset on the phone. It will then pull the contacts from your google account.
There are other ways to do it, but this worked well for me. The bonehead at the Best Buy mobile store decided to import my contacts from my sim. I told her not to and instead of clearing it out she left it.
I was furious and explained to her I just came in here with a G1, why on earth would you import from my sim when you know it will just sync from my google account?
Factory reset is retarded. Just clear data under contacts or use one of the many alloys apps mentioned here. You don't need to even do that though because the sync will fix it.

Almost as retarded as installing an app to clear contacts? My assumption is that the poster just got the phone and imported form the sim so there is really no harm. It takes only a couple minutes to get everything back in place. It's pretty painless.
Just go on your computer to gmail, clean up all your contacts under my contacts, and let the auto sync work its magic.

How in the hell do I get my phone contacts to sync to Google? I tried settings_accounts_Google sync but it only pulls my gmail contacts to my phone. I want to put my phone contacts to gmail. Backup assistant works fine, but some of the custom roms out don't use it. I can't find any info on this. HTC told me when I create contacts and choose Google instead of phone that they will sync. What about the 80 or so that backup assistant did upon activating my phone? And also, if I save future contacts as Google contacts and not phone contacts, does backup assist still back these up too?
In phone book hit menu and export contacts to sd card. This will give you a file that can be used to import your contacts on gmail.com

or just go to backup asst online.. vzw.com/backupassistant, and then export your contacts to a .csv file..which you can then import into google..doesnt take long.
In order to get the ones already saved in your phone to sync to google I think you're going to have to go with one of the options they said since I dont think there is a way to change them from phone contact to google contact.
However, when you add new contacts there is a drop down toward the top that you can change from phone to google so that after you save them it will sync automatically.
So if I import them to Google, it will sync. I get that. Now if I add new contacts as Google contacts does backup assist still back them up also?
Sorry if this is the forum for this. I finally transfered my phone contacts to google contacts. I went to vzw, exported to .csv, and imported to gmail. So far so good. I deleted mt contacts from my phone, and synced my google contacts. All good there. I accidentally deleted a couple of contacts off of my phone, but they are still in gmail. How do I get them back onto my phone. I know with backup assistant I can retrieve and resync them to the phone, but don't have the foggiest how to do it with gmail. Thanks for the help.
Menu/settings/accounts & sync
Q&A would of been better suited for general questions.

I tried that but it didn't add it back to the phone. I went back to gmail and it seems they were removed from there as well. Is that normal, if you remove it from the phone it also gets removed from gmail contacts list? How can I delete a contact from the phone without deleting it from gmail?
Login to gmail from your pc, you can choose which you want to sync or make a list.

Is there any way to import phone numbers quickly, such as a copy and paste from the computer if possible, from an older phone?
I have a bunch of numbers from my razr2 that I would like to stick onto the vibrant, and if there is an easier way I'd rather do that than mess with the razr2's messed up capacitive buttons.
Sim card?.....
Sync your number from razer to outlook or outlook express. Then import it to your gmail contact. You should create a new group in contacts to keep it organized. Once logged in on your phone it will sync all automatically.

woops, didn't realize it was that easy. i apologize for the silly question.
is it ideal to put numbers on a sim or straight into the phone? this is with a 2year contract from tmobile.
Phone is better because there are certain features that will only work with the number on the phone.

What features only work with the numbers on the phone? 2.2 made it so you could assign custom ringtones w.o saving the number to the phone.

Well, I have sent contacts as vcard (via bluetooth) from SE phone to Samsung Vibrant, every number/e-mail/adress is in a right place.
Quick and safe
I can say it would be a good idea to have all your contacts backed up on gmail as well. I've had sim cards go bad, so if it does, you just lost your contacts. I'm not sure how the razor sync's contacts, but if you can sync with outlook, it's really easy to get them to gmail. You basically backup your contacts to a file, then go to gmail and import that file. Trust me, having them on gmail will make it easier on you. If you were to change any numbers, it will auto sync with gmail, and if you get a new phone, (android), all your numbers will sync automatically through gmail.
+1 its like magic

Very good explanation. Thanks.
+1 for Google Contact sync. It also allows you to export in csv format so you can easily sync those contacts with other applications as well. Not to mention a web interface for editing and grouping those contacts which then automagically syncs to your phone.
Also, saving contacts to the phone gives you a lot more storage than a SIM card. I believe a SIM can only hold up to 250 contacts.
Whenever i flash a new rom Google automatically restores my contacts. Over time i have noticed that there are duplicate contacts. In fact each contact keeps adding more and more duplicate. I want to know how i can go and edit all those contacts so in the future i don't see all those duplicate and only see what i want. The other option would be to have Google not restore them. I have tried to go into settings and disable auto sinc when i flash a new rom but somehow after a few hours or a few days all the duplicate come back. I always export my contacts to my sd card and i would really just like to use that to restore. But again somehow when i restore the contacts from the sd card Google also restores them and i have tons of duplicate. I don't mind using Google to restore just in case one day my phone dies and i don't have a back up in my sd card. But i really have to find a way to go into Google and fix the back up they have.

You need to log into your google account from a computer and edit your contacts from there...also, when you go into your phone settings>accounts & sync, click on the email account that has all your contacts and it will give you a list of options of what you want synced, like contacts, mail, calender, etc. Uncheck contacts. This way you can still have auto sync on. Also when you are in your contacts app, there is a way to manage where your contact info is pulled from i.e. sim card, google account, phone, etc... again, select just the one place you want them imported from or merge the contacts if they are coming from multiple places.
In the end, though, the best thing for me was to spend the time to clean up my google account contacts so I could access the information from anywhere, on any phone, computer, etc. Then you don't have to worry about your sim or sd card crapping out, or losing/accidentally deleting a backup, etc.
Another newb question to the Samsung. My contacts are an absolute nightmare and I can't figure out how to get them under control. I went in and disabled (I think) sync on as many things as I could find (exchange, facebook, etc). I also went through and manually deleted a bunch of contacts I didn't want. Went in there today and BOOM. Contacts are a chaotic mess again. How do I fix this? How can I mass delete contacts and start over if it comes down to that?

Facebook always screws mine up, so I never sync it ever.
I'd just sync your google ones and then go fix them on contacts.google.com

You need to disable sync on all the apps. Contact can be sync from Gmail, Facebood, Google+ etc.. Make sure you go into each and stop all the sync, then delete all the existing contacts (most of them just have email address with no phone number associate), then restore your original contact list. If you don't have the original contact list then you need to modify your current one to your liking, then export it out to your sdcard. This will be your core original list. In the future if anything happened to your contact list, you can easily delete all then import your original list and you're back. The quickest way, is to select display only "phone" contact then other none phone number contacts will disappear when you open contact.
You can tell the phone which contacts to display by account. I have mine set to only display Google. This way I don't have to worry about what syncs and doesn't, and can link the contacts between accounts so it'll show their Facebook picture for them.
