Contacts on phone not syncing with gmail - Galaxy S I9000 General

I have my phone set to sync contacts with gmail but it does not. How can I get it to sync properly???

have you uploaded contacts to your gmail account?
if not: 1. export contacts to sdcard 2. import contacts from sdcard, then you got several options. select google.

That did it! Thanks a million.

Sync contacts with gmail account

Does any one have problem with sync contacts with gmail account?
I have contacts in my phone. How to synchronize them with gmail?
Mail is synchronizing ok, but contacts...
When i tryed new rom-s i must sync with my PC all time, but i want to back them in my phone from gmail. I's it possible?
TY
You first need to enable the contacts sync. -≥ Go to Settings - Data Synchronization - Google and put a checkmark on Contacts.
On your phone, if you go to contacts, you see on the right side of the contact's name the word phone(this means the contact is a phone contact) You have three types of contacts - phone, google and sim contacts. All of your contacts need to be google contacts, if you want to sync them with google. You can probably manually convert every single phone contact to google contact, but that would take a lot of time.
So to speed up things, you need to do this:
You need to transfer all your contacts to your computer, Outlook or such. Then delete all your contacts from the phone. From outlook you need to export all contacts to the .csv or .vcard file. Then go to Gmail and import all your contacts from .csv file. Connect your tattoo to the internet and again go to settings - data synchronization - Google, press menu and choose Sync now. It will then transfer all your contacts from gmail to your phone. Then all your contacts will become google contacts and you will be able to sync them with Gmail.
In the future, when you create a new contact on your phone, be sure to select google as type of the contact to be able to sync it with gmail.
But be very careful with this, make a backup of all your contacts before you do this.
Bye
My contact have letters: š, ć,.. and few more letters that show ? ? instead of š, ć when i'm export contacts from outlook.. I's there any other way to convert phone to google contacts? TY
I did a bit of research on this and there seems to be no other way to convert contacts from phone to google...i found this answer from htc on one of the forums:
HTC >>There is no default setting to always store a contact as google.
If you wish create a contact save it as google and create another one, if its set to google already then it does remember if not then you'll have to do this manually.
Unfortunately it is not possible to convert all contacts to google ones, it can only be done by re-adding each individual contact.

In phone or SIM?
Just make sure you enable the sync in Settings as noted above and enable background data; every contact should be then synced between server and phone (but I'm not sure about SIM contacts, probably not) when you go online with your phone.
Many of my contacts even have Serbian Cyrillic letters (абвгдђежзијклљ...) and everything works just fine, no matter if they were created in Google Contacts online (www.google.com/contacts) or in my phone.
However, I haven't try sync between phone and Outlook because I use Ubuntu and Google Contacts only
Dejan i have tried this...i created a phone contact and tried to sync it with google and it doesn't work for me....the contact needs to be a google contact. But for the ščćžđ letters, yes gmail supports them in contact names, sorry for misleading you.
I solve problem.
With program expcontacts export all people to sdcard in csv format.
Delete all contacts from phone.
Import csv file from sdcard to gmail contacts.
Sync contacts with gmail.
Great workaround Liderzre, skipping the whole outlook thing, for the people who don't use windows and outlook or for the people who don't want outlook to mess up letters čćžšđ in their contact names
Thanks for the great app. All in order now, but not syncing...oh well on to remedy another problem.

Thanks, but will the newly imported contacts end up in gmail??? Won't they just end up in phone again (as it was originally)?
No cause you are importing as google contacts so they will sync with gmail contacts

the only downside i see to this is that some of the contact's options are not available to google contacts. for example you can't set personal ringtone to google contact..

Exporting Facebook Contacts

So, what I'd like to do is synchronize my facebook contact list with my gmail contacts, but not just on my phone. I want my gmail contacts updated as well. I wish there was a way to do this natively on the phone, but I don't know of one.
Is there a way to export your facebook contacts and birthdays to gmail?
Last time I tried, you could export you facebook contacts to yahoo and then from yahoo to gmail... I don't know of a way to export directly to gmail.

Even just a way to get them out of the phone in CSV format would work. As long as the birthdays are included.
I actually tried the yahoo method but it was not working when I tried it. Kept getting 0 contacts imported.

Fastest way to import phone numbers?

Is there any way to import phone numbers quickly, such as a copy and paste from the computer if possible, from an older phone?
I have a bunch of numbers from my razr2 that I would like to stick onto the vibrant, and if there is an easier way I'd rather do that than mess with the razr2's messed up capacitive buttons.
Sim card?.....
Sync your number from razer to outlook or outlook express. Then import it to your gmail contact. You should create a new group in contacts to keep it organized. Once logged in on your phone it will sync all automatically.

woops, didn't realize it was that easy. i apologize for the silly question.
is it ideal to put numbers on a sim or straight into the phone? this is with a 2year contract from tmobile.
Phone is better because there are certain features that will only work with the number on the phone.

What features only work with the numbers on the phone? 2.2 made it so you could assign custom ringtones w.o saving the number to the phone.

Well, I have sent contacts as vcard (via bluetooth) from SE phone to Samsung Vibrant, every number/e-mail/adress is in a right place.
Quick and safe
I can say it would be a good idea to have all your contacts backed up on gmail as well. I've had sim cards go bad, so if it does, you just lost your contacts. I'm not sure how the razor sync's contacts, but if you can sync with outlook, it's really easy to get them to gmail. You basically backup your contacts to a file, then go to gmail and import that file. Trust me, having them on gmail will make it easier on you. If you were to change any numbers, it will auto sync with gmail, and if you get a new phone, (android), all your numbers will sync automatically through gmail.
+1 its like magic

Very good explanation. Thanks.
+1 for Google Contact sync. It also allows you to export in csv format so you can easily sync those contacts with other applications as well. Not to mention a web interface for editing and grouping those contacts which then automagically syncs to your phone.
Also, saving contacts to the phone gives you a lot more storage than a SIM card. I believe a SIM can only hold up to 250 contacts.

If you're just looking to sync them to have their contact information in your phone then I do have a solution for that. Its a process, but once its done, its done (but is reversible).
You'll need a Yahoo email account to do this. Log into your Yahoo email account, go to your contacts page, and choose to Import. Select Facebook. This will import your facebook contacts to your Yahoo account. Ok, now from the contacts page in Yahoo, you want to select export. Create a yahoo CSV file and save it to your computer. Now log onto your Google account and go to the Dashboard and then to Contacts. Now import the CSV file you made for Yahoo and you'll have all your facebook contacts now in your gmail account which will then sync to your phone. Of course you'll have to add any new facebook contact you aquire after the process manually (of just repeat the process).
Its not the most automated solution, but it is a solution. Of course you wont be able to see updates and what not with this solution, but it will get your facebook contacts information into your phone.
^^^ this is some very useful info here. Didn't know how to do this until this step by step instructions. Thanks so much.
