[Q] Backup Android data OUTSIDE of Android!? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi,
My current Android (2.2 on SD) that i have for a few months is stuck (it wont boot, boot animation keeps repeating). So i'm back on my WM and i want to put some new Android (i believe its easier than reviving the old one), but is there ANY way to keep the old messages and contacts from that broken one?
Basically, is there a way to do it from WM or PC (since my Android won't boot)?
Also, if you think that its impossible, write that too, it is also an answer.

well.. i bet it is somewhere in your phone.. haha =D
I have been searching on the web to find an answer to it, but I didn't find anything. Did you use any backup program before your phone froze ?

Yes. You can extract data.img and copy the contacts and messages to the new Android build.

[Q] Please... Can somebody help me to 'get rid of' Android on my phone...?

As the headline says: I want to remove, or go back to WM, but without deleting everything and go back to scratch... I have some appointments that I want to save, and that I don't have anywhere else... (I can't find them now that Android is running...)
Please, please help me...
(Could the software make my appointments disappear?
Can somebody see if these software information is 'correct':
OS Version

reboot? as in turning it off and on? It doesn't work... And neither does taking the battery out.... Sorry, my english is very bad, so I don't know what reboot is, or how I do it... Thnx...

you've posted in four threads that you can't get back to windows. If you shut the phone down and power on again, its simply not believable that you can't get into windows. if you are using an auto bootloader, then it should at least briefly give you an option to boot into windows. so, are you using an autoboot program?
If you happened to install a rom that autoboots android, (I'm guessing, can't see any other reason why a reboot wouldn't work), try turning off your phone, taking out the sdcard, then booting it up.
I'm sorry, but I don't know what to do... There's so many things that doesn't work.. That's why I posted it so many places... I don't know if I am using an autoboot program or not.. I followed the instructions from Youtube that everybody were positive about. And no, I don't get the option to boot into windows when I reboot the phone..
Android boots from your SD card so justtake it out and reboot phone and android wont load up.
Once in there you can uninstall the autoboot or flash a new version of windows or whatever you need to do.
No, that didn't work either... I thought it was very strange, because I heard about people who switched between android and wm... So I don't know what's wrong...

If you take the SD card out like others had suggested and turn your phone off and on, Android won't boot as it runs off the SD card (for the time bing anyway).
No SD card = No Android

If after removing SD card and rebooting you still boot into Android, then you either :
1. have a NAND version of Android (not sure if that's even available now)
2. have an Android phone (top part of Evo looks like Leo)
Sorry, but my SDcard is on the table, and Android is still running... What have I done...?
like i said, you either have :
1. NAND version of Android (not sure if this is even available)
or 2. an actual Android phone (top part of Evo looks like Leo)

Did the youtube video you watched, ask you to flash a new WM rom. Are you sure your not mistaking your new WM rom as android, as it possibly looks different to your original ROM (which if you havnt backed up your data, you've already lost those appointments)
I suggest you watch a video of andriod, and see if it looks the same as your phone.
If it does, and your phone is definetily a HD2 Leo, and Android is running, Do you know anybody that goes by the name of Cotulla?....lol.
MaxSense modification for sense is an Android like interface.
I have neither NAND version nor Android phone...

Are these settings showing on your phone Under settings / about phone / software information?? If so you are in WM, not Android. And sorry to say you have lost your appointments, unless you backed them up using PIM backup or something similiar, which im guessing from this thread you didn't.
Just by looking at this Ive determined that the OP doesnt really know what he is doing at all. The software information that he posted indicates he flashed a custom WM rom (probably energy) and thinks its android.
kjessa_83: You are running a custom version of WM, NOT android!! If you want to go back to the original rom, I suggest you find the official rom, and flash that. Btw, if you cant tell the difference between WM and android, maybe you shouldnt be messing around with the phone...
The folder that I copied to my SDcard is called Android, so how come it's WM?

I am not sure where deadmansink is going with his cryptic answer (that thread has nothing to do with booting to Android, and who the hell knows what "secret" info is), but the easy answer to your issue is to delete the data.img file from your SD card. It will be found in the \Android folder. You can do this from WinMo or from your computer if you have a card reader.
Reboot the phone. Give it time to boot up to create a new data.img.
Then it will be as if there was a fresh install of Android.

No need to down-grade help. The "secret" is just all the extra info that people give in their signature, as well as links. I don't feel that "all he needs to do is replace the data.img" as he doesn't like the WMRom. It sounds like he would like a fresh start and that's where I directed him.

Do you have any tips for switching from a ROM with Sense to one without? I am thinking about trying a more stable ROM because the Sense seems to be causing me issues.
Would the Sense related settings be crossed out, and I would uncheck the crossed out options during the restore? Did I understand that correctly from the video?
Also, you touched on the Apps installed from the market. Do you have to install those manually? Or, will Titanium Backup restore those for you?
In need of help
I have hd2 running gingerbread from magldr and would like to switch back to the original rom so i can send it in for warranty .. any help would be greatly appreciated.....thanks
Nice guide, many thanks from me too!!!
Don't forget to backup the SD Card
One other thing that is probably worth pointing out: Once you have backed everything up, you should probably copy it off the SD card to another computer. I read somewhere about someone doing something that wiped out their SD card, and they lost their backups on it.
To back it up, I copied the TitaniumBackup directory from the SD card to my laptop. Also, I copied the clockworkmod directory because i had backed up the ROM as a whole from the AD Recovery.

[Q] How to update between Updates on SD builds Americanandroid

Hi All,
I apologize im a noob just learning my way around android and was wondering how to perform this update properly without messing anything up. I have done some searching and found some brief explanations, but was wondering if someone could possibly give me a little more thorough "how to" explanation on how to update between SD builds. Specifically AmericanAndroid 2.3.5 to the newest 2.3.7 American SD build. From what I understand i have to copy and replace the "old" android folder with the "new" update one and overwrite everything except the data.img file?? if this is correct again, if someone could explain in nooby words id appreciate it! Thanks in advance!!

So i just copy and paste new Android folder into the old one, then at that point prompts will come up asking if i want to overwrite them, and click yes to all of them except for data.img?? or is there another method? Do i remove the new data.img file from the new before overwriting? Also, will This will keep all my themes and homescreen configuration the same? or will it wipe out everything? would you happen to know of a thread that explains this in detail by chance? Thanks for your help.

Yeah that works just fine, just make sure you don't overwrite the old data.img or you could lose all your data. In fact, you should probably make a backup of it to guarantee its safety, just copy and paste it onto your hard drive/USB somewhere. Everything will remain the same as before, just the build will be updated with new features from the new version.

Perfect! Thanks. i feel much more confident about going into it. Sorry about all the questions. i usually just go for the most part by trial and error, but being this is my wifes phone, and she hates losing settings etc i wanted to make sure i had this pretty much figured out. again really appreciate all your help!

[Q] How to retrieve notes from the Catch Notes app in a bootlooping image?

Hi everyone
I need to know if there is a way to retrieve notes made with the Catch Notes app (yea that one, that is no longer in service) from the image/sd-card files of an Android-Version that put my HD2 into a bootloop.
I'm running Android via sdcard-booting. The ROM is from AmericanAndroid running Android 2.3.7 (quite old actually).
In the past the phone randomly got into booting loops (rarely though, probably 2-3 times in the last 2 years). To 'solve' this issue I reverted back to a backup that I occassionaly made of the entire SD-card. The problem is, everything between the last backup and the day that those bootloops started to happen was pretty much lost. Atleast concerning the notes I made with the Catch Notes app.
I tried to fiddle through the files on the sdcard (I backed up the files aswell of the 'faulty' state of the image) but couldn't find anything that lead me towards the notes off Catch Notes. Does anyone know where that is stored locally? The thing is, I didn't use the app to sync it with their service, it was all stored locally and it must be somewhere in the app data, but I just can't find it. Could it be that it is in the data.img file? I'm not an expert in that field, so I have no clue where to search.
I would be extremely thankful if anyone leads me into the right direction. There's quite some important notes there that I need to have access to.
Thanks in advance for any help. If you need more info, just tell me and I would gladly give it to you.
Well ...

My Friend As I Know Apps Save Their Outpots ( TXT - Doc - etc ) In The SD Card So Maybe You Should Take a Look At Your SD Folders ( If You Have Lost Them Then Use a Recovery app To recover files through a PC ... But If You Have a Complete Backup Then You Can Try An Other SD ROM Or a NativeSD ROM TO get It Boot and Recover What You Wanted ...
