microsoft havnt opened up the camera API to developers yet so it isnt possible for a developer to make one, same goes for the compass API & sockets API which is why theres no Skype app or anything similar.
I have downloaded this from somewhere. It's working fine on my Omnia 7. Creds to the dev.

While that is technically true, an API does exist which will enable this - it just isn't accessible by default, and any attempts to use it for Marketplace apps will fail. I've had a sideloaded app since pretty much launch doing just this though.

Sort of. All OEMs have lower level access to the OS and can provide their own software to do certain things. HTC is the only one who chose to make a proper LED flashlight though.

As many of you know, it wasn't possible to record calls with the 2.0 and 2.1 android versions. Can someone test whether the feature is supported in the new firmware?
Thanks.

Test? How? Wouldn't you need a recorder app that was specifically coded to use the phone audio stream? If there was such an app and it didn't work for some reason in earlier versions, let me know and I'll be happy to give it a shot under Froyo, as that's functionality I'd like to have, too.

There are apps available in the store, for example "total recall". would be really grateful if u can check that one up, it'll be a decider for me about getting a n1.
Thanks

Total recall doesn't work on anything 2.0+ like Nexus One.
It's in the app description itself.
Looking for alternatives..
This is a bit of an odd question, but please bare with me here.
I'm writing my thesis for the uni about C#... with the recent release of VS2010, I thought it'd be great to focus on this IDE and the new features it offers and put those in the thesis as well. I ALSO had an idea to show that one can write apps for mobile devices using C# (duh, but all's fair in the academic world ); I own a HD2, so being able to whip out the phone and show the app working would be a great way to blow some academic minds (well, not really, but I think it'd be nice).
However... VS2010 doesn't support WMo 6.X, which is a serious bummer. There are some rumours that an SDK will be released, but if and when that will happen remains a mystery.
So this leaves me WMo7, which has already been ported to HD2. However, it seems it's not public just yet. And besides not being public, WMo7 will supposedly only allow apps to be installed through MS store... so I have no idea if it'll be possible for me to write an app for that OS and actually use it (it won't be commercial in any way and 100% useless for 99% of people, as it only serves as a live example for my thesis).
To summarize:
- Is is possible for a "basement-programmer" like myself to use WMo7 to show off my own apps without the use of the MS store?
- If so, where could I get my hands on WMo7 for HD2?
- If WMo7 is not available to us mortals, could someone tell me roughly when a public release will be available?
- Or perhaps the whole idea is pointless and I should just develop my app in VS2080 and show it off with the HD2 that I currently own? (It's will be a simple app that connects to some database online without being limited to MSSQL and does something with it, where "something" is yet unspecified)

assume currently it wont be available for the HD2, if it is then it wont be available until a few months after the release of wp7

AKAIK it hasnt, there is a rom available but it doesnt run on any current device since its a beta rom for an unreleased device.
there is a chance they may get it working on the HD2 or some other phone but its not available currently.

So... the whole thing about W7 having been ported to HD2 was just a rumour?
I am not sure where you heard that winmo had been ported too hd2? is a link available.
I have just checked Da_G's twitter account and he is still working on the port, he has developed several new tools too help him but is struggling to get some stuff to do with the JTAG controller.
there is a hd2 application which attempts to reimplement some of the functions you can see in the wp7 promo videos but this is not a port it is just an application that looks like wp7.

write your app under 2008 and for 6.5, there hasn't been any word from the source of that rumour for months. C# code is very portable between 2008 and 2010, so don't worry about that. With a little work (can be on the order of hours) you can upgrade your code to 2010 and 7.0 if it ever arrives for HD2.
uuum.. u can show windows phone 7 with a emulator on a pc.. and i think ms released the windows phone 7 tools to programm apps for it alerady..
http://developer.windowsphone.com/Default.aspx
dont know if its possible to just run the app without the market.. i hope it is, but really dont know >.<
and its impossible to port wp7 to the HD2 right now. yes, it already happened, but that version is very laggy and buggy, so its useless when u want to show it
Would really like to try out WP7 but I heard there are some touchscreen issues with the current and only ROM available. Based on how DFT released the the first Android NAND build and opened the gates for developers to update with new fixes that are currently I can only hope more developers start doing the same with WP7. Also with the workaround to have access to the marketplace does this mean we can also receive updates from Microsoft since they recognize it as a HD7?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I hope so.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I don't think we'll be getting any updates because of our hard buttons and every other wp7's capacitive buttons.. But I could be wrong and hope im wrong

It seems to me like current ROM is pretty much perfect, or as perfect as it's going to get, given that the OS is closed and never existed for this device in the first place (unlike Android/WinMo6).
I've not had a single issue since I installed - everything works identically to a 'real' WP7 device.
Guys lets use the best motivation for developers
I make the beginning:
For an fully fonctional Costum and STABLE WP7 Rom for our HD2s WITH WORKING MARKETPLACE
where you dont get the error message "cant get this info right now try again in a while" when trying installing an app
I will donate 35 $
I will donate 25$, with a better Kamera

u have to change the registrz etc....see the first posts in this forum...
than this message wont appear..
yes it is . I had a hd7 and this build is just the same in every way IMO .
Like mentioned, the camera lacking the autofocus is the only major problem in the DFT build. Because Microsoft only has one version available for every manufacturer and they cant make any changes to the system for now, theres not much to develop.
I never thought I'd like WP7 this much, it's clean and simple. With the integration of Zune it's a great mediaplayer.
The only thing you have to do is activate to make the OS usefull, without activating it's just an empty skin.
Oh, a decent door to door navigation app is what's still missing.
actually the preview of the camera is crap but the actual photos it takes are perfectly in focus and look fine to me

When you go to setting/about it should show your phone as HD7, not Leo70... if it says Leo70, then you didn't change the registry right.

I know it would maybe take 10 min or something but you would really help me with that.
I searched entire days but couldn't figure out what to do and which registry type i should create in the HTC folder i made in the registry.
The marketplace is the last thing remained more making my wp7 perfect.
Thanks really a lot
For me I had a bad version of XMOD (45kb instead of 131kb) found the other and reinstalled and ok . (342kb before install) .

yea, let us know
it's certainly buildable for the hero - but most hardware will be broken I would imagine.

yes elelinux!
do you think when the sources get released you would have much chance of building a full (or near full) working honeycomb rom?

I think it's possible, but it will not be easy. Especially because Honeycomb is made for tablets... and not for our phones.
If it's built from SDK I bet that almost none of the hardware is working...

That is correct, but strangely all the backlighting of the buttons etc worked out of the box, buttons it is easy to fix if you want.
Just a little test for fun nothing else, also saw that there was support for mdpi so theoretically it could be working on Hero with some manual intervention.
Another thing to, boot up without problems

Yes but hardly anything is working! Even the Nexus one has no audio, wifi, bluetooth, calls!
Yes, it is foolish to ask for a ROM that's meant to run on tablets to be made for phones. But I never have never said and never will say no to a new ROM...
Sent from my Hero using XDA App
Yes it's going to run like ass and our screens won't do any good either.
But... as always, I'm eager to see what crazy stuff the ROM-people come up with.
but the sdk version includes some feature of switching from tablet to mobile mode by simply changing resolution... they won't have included it if it wasn't meant to be run on mobiles, and in 3.1, mobile (2.x) and tablet (3.0) development lines shall be joined (says wikipedia lol). moreover, lots of people out here said it would be impossible to run 2.2 and 2.3 on hero, and right now i'm looking at my rooted android 2.3 hero which is incredibly smooth and stable (way better than with stock os). so why shouldn't it be possible? ele just said even backlight of the buttons worked out of the box, which was not case in 2.x. i'm still believing in our developers (although i can't code well enough to support them ) and i'm sure they'll do some magic
greets, Summoner
Do you really use wikipedia for truths? Anyone can add to Wiki?!
no i don't... i just think it sounds possible... otherwise, there would be two future development lines which the consequence would be that there were VERY different features depending where more / the better devs work on lol^^
i didn't claim it was the absolute truth, otherwise i wouldn't have explicitly said it came from wiki ...

Going to begin some work on an xda app for windows 8 , Any chance there is a way I can get the source code for the android xda app?
Try search in Google.com
I think they are using (or support) tapatalk's engine. maybe you can start from there.

Correct. Good luck getting any source though
good luck man!
wont be easy^^
Just set up a poxy server and and use the xda app so you can see how the app communicates with the api (if there is such a thing). I imagine there is one as I can't see it being a scraping app. That would just be horrible!
BTW, I do know it's proxy. I just like the word "poxy".
Thanks guys, the more I look into windows 8 the more it seems the our normal android apps should work on it with a bit of tweaking as long as they are built on java visual basic C++ or c#. Which would be amazingly nice, working on trying to figure out how to do it now. I have a small team working on this acctualy. We are making nice headway, just need to find a way to install them really. I hope I can figure it out and supply Windows 8 users with many an app. Wish me luck!
