:mad: do we have a class action lawsuit??

just got off the phone with Sprints Advance Tech support.
i was asking them how to uninstall the Amazon MP3 app.
the answer came back NO. even if they did a hard reboot its in the hardware and Sprint can not do nothing about it.
here's the set up. i don't listen to music and have only turned on the app MYSELF twice. once to see what its about and the other to see if i could uninstall it.
this program also turns itself on a lot AND I DON"T want it to do this.
NEXT
in the setting under the Applications i saw that it was collecting and keeping DATA. so i erased the info and to my surprise when i called Sprint and looked at the Data it had recorded 20Kbs of info. the only thing i did was use the phone. Does Any One know what kind of data it is collecting. my fear is it is keeping data on my phone calls?
Sprint could not answer that question and i waited inline for 15 min on the HTC tech line before i could not wait any longer.
i also found when the battery runs down the battery info will pop up. in there i looked through a few things and found some apps running even after i turned them off. i selected the Amazon link and i seen that i could uninstall from there. i selected uninstall and it said i could not uninstall the app.
my feeling is HTC gives me no choice in uninstalling a BUILT in APP that is collecting DATA on me is not in my best interest. i will be calling my lawyer monday - but i am seeking your help in understanding what kind of data is amazon collecting. TIA

lets see - did you read the part that i wiped out the DATA and only made a phone call and then checked the DATA and it collected 20Kbs?

funny thing about rooting - that was what the Sprint Adv Tech manger said to do. but he also said it makes my phone void for repairs.

Personally I use Aluminium foil in the shape of a cone hat,,, That stops the app from collecting data. Also try reading "To kill a mockingbird" I have also heard that helps

Do you download any application from the market, or is your phone running only pre-installed apps? That won't make a difference since almost every app warns you of collecting data. Rooting is not going to solve the problem.

the app is built INTO the HARDWARE from HTC. thus not giving the option to accept the agreement.

So what do you think happens when you sign in with your Google account? It specifically states that data collection will happen no matter what. Now I know your talking about Amazon, but seriously...the paranoia isn't going to help much.
Calling sprint's customer service line and demanding to know what data was being collected was your biggest mistake. Sad to say, but the people here know more then the CS reps do.
Why not contact Amazon or do a search online on what is collected with applications? Either way thanks for the laugh, hope your response isn't to brutal!

on a serious note, if you lived in the EU you might have a chance. They're against OEMs making you have to use stuff, look at MS and the IE choice thing.

Second if you cleared your data and then made a phone call, and the data jumped up to 20kb, do you really think it has collected any relevant data? A little common sense is in order here. Most likely the data it captured is:

I would recommend running your phone in airplane mode 100% of the time. I guarentee you can have a device where absolutely no data is sent or received and you can be happy.

Instead of paying someone for a solution that won't appear anytime soon, why don't you just spend that money on a gsm phone and buy the sim cards for service over there? Is it the 4G service that you want or the wifi tethering you were hoping to utilize?

When I went to Antigua this year I bought an unlocked Blackberry and took it down with me. Just buy a prepaid sim while down there. I was there for 2 weeks so I don't know if you will find it worth your while.

Do a search for a VOIP solution in these forums. I remember reading where someone went to Belize and was able to mod their EVO to work there. Similar situation to yours.
To the lame people who commented that it's impossible: Advancement is only made when it is believed that there is an answer and that is possible. Then you have to keep searching until you find that answer. Don't expect it to be handed to you. Saying something is impossible without trying is just plain lazy. Let go of your mother's tit!

I always use brightroam.com whenever I go overseas.
You can rent everything and have a blackberry or cheapo phone already setup to use over there. It's signficantly cheaper then getting service when you arrive. They mail you the phone, you set it up and take it with you. Plus you can always google coupon codes w/ them. "15AEREWARD" gets you $15 off.

Even with VOIP he's regulated to only WiFi which is a pretty shoddy solution. But hey, that might be good enough for him.
As far as saying it's lame to think it's impossible, unless you open the EVO and physically change the radio, and then update the software to reflect that change, it is. So sure it's not 100% impossible, just impracticable and almost impossible. But hey, now I know who to go to when I want my XBox 360 to play PS3 games.

that has got to be the dumbest response i've ever seen.. str8 up its impossible, regardless of how lazy you think ppl are.. it was an easy call.. its the very reason u havent seen iphones on the verizon network.. its not possible. we're talking two diff technologies (cdma vs gsm) in antigua, all cell companies are gsm..

So don't pursue running cdma on a gsm network. You can run a VOIP hack. That has been done. The point is I see people respond frequently with "that's not possible" when the truth is they just don't know the answer. People are hacking their phones to run on Verizon and boost mobile. What if people had said "that's impossible" before someone found the answer? Pretty dumb.
The point of my post was that it is not constructive to say that it is impossible. The reason for these forums is to help each other find the answers we need.

If your reading this then you must have an EVO. And if you do you already know the battery life is the worst!!! I dies in about 4 or 5 hrs without even using it. Yea mine did that too.....at first.
First you have to root your phone. If your not rooted i can do that too. For extra of course! Then once i drop my addition on your phone you'll have a battery that lasts all day. You think im joking right? Look at the pictures.
**The first pic is of the screen i root your phone on!!**
**The second picture shows at the top when i last plugged my phone in....YES that DOES say over 16 HOURS since i last charged my phone!!! Dont believe me I'll show you on my own phone!!!
**The third is of the wifi screen your gonna use...you can use the internet off your phone on a laptop, ipad or whatever....
**The fourth pic is of me deleting the crap sprint apps wasting memory on my phone!!
....And yes i can make it happen on yours!! By the way I've got many more tricks i can show you if your interested...changing ROMs/operating systems & the whole 9 yards!!
Ok here's a quick off the top of my head list of things I can do. Hopefully I don't forget anything.
1. Root the phone. <<--You cant do anything w/o this $15
2. Do a full Nand unlock. You cant do wifi unless the security/ NAND is unlocked. <<--$5
3. WiFi tether. Can make the phone a hotspot so you dont have to pay sprint for it. Sprint charges $10 a month. <<-- Hit me with $10 and its yours. Dont pay sprint $10 a month
4. Change the way the phone looks. Colors, functions, home screens...everything
5. Change to the ROM of your choice. Like different operating systems. <<--#4 & #5 go together im flexible on this. Make me an offer
6. Change the kernel. Improve performance & battery functions. <<--$10 this is what makes your battery last wayyyyyy longer
7. Set processor speed. Overclock = make it faster. Underclock = slow things down...better battery life. <<--You either get #6 or #7 not both.
8. Backup all your contacts & apps forever & delete sprint apps <--$5 this is easy
9. Backup your entire system forever. <<--$5 this is easy
10. Show you how to get paid apps for free. <<--$5
I can also do any new android phone. Tmobile mytouch 4g's, Samsung EPIC's, Droid's and a bunch more....

I don't see anything wrong. He's just charging for labor and believe it or not but some people don't want to learn how to do it themselves. You have people who go to car washes in the summer because they are too lazy to do it themselves. You have fast food joints for people too lazy to fix themselves a meal.

Yes to both. There are tons of ads in Craigslist for unlocking phones and fixing broken game systems. U just have to be willing to put up with the idiots that want their money back when they damage their **** after u have worked on it. I have thought about it plenty of times myself.

nope, i had a no refund policy, even if their phone bricked.

I'm too lazy to do an ad. I thought about it but don't want to have to deal with the people complaining. The best thing if you are going to do it is to meet them somewhere and fix it instead of having them come over your place (retarded idea).

I do this myself... I've made over $100 on a 2-3 span of doing this. My ad is old now and expired, haven't started a new one. Old customers still refer people to me though

I see nothing wrong with this at all, and have been contemplating putting an ad up as a matter of fact. I'm out of work for a few months due to medical reasons, and could definitely use a little extra cash. I'd root evo's all day long for 25 to 30 bucks each. If someone wants their phone rooted for things like tethering and what not, but doesn't have the know-how or the interest in learning, but is willing to spend a little cash to have it done, I see nothing wrong with that at all. They would likely be the one's searching craigslist for something specific like that, which obviously means they are willing to pay for it. I think this thread motivated me even more to do it. I have all the time in the world these days.

At first I thought this was a really good idea. After thinking about it more, if your phone is hacked, having to deal with charges through Google checkout offers a layer of separation from my phone bill.

not unjustifiable at all. as i mentioned earlier, it's no different than soliciting flyers for a lawn-care business, or any other business that capitalizes on skills/knowledge that is freely and widely available for anyone to obtain.

Everything about this is garbage ... do I care? No. Some folks definitely have a stronger opinion of this than others. He takes others work and 'passes it off' as his own. I don't deny that people can't be bothered to do this stuff and will pay others for the 'work' but the wording is always the funny part. Its like me posting a listing and utilizing everyone else's contributions.
Its stupid. It's ****ing stupid and you are ****ing stupid if you pay someone to do something like this. Its like charging people to upgrade their HDD in their PS3 because they're too dense to do it themselves. Its laughable. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I've seen people on CL ASKING to pay for someone to root their phone. I always email them right away, tell them about the one click root method with the video walkthrough, and to save their money. Craigslist is full of ****heads and scammers, but this is a service that people want, and just don't know where to get good information. I always get thank you emails after for showing them XDA, and saving them money.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what the guy is doing. He's offering his services for a fee... Capitalism at its best!
You think how much time you've spent learning how to do this, familiarizing yourself with the process. Learning what to do when something goes wrong, etc, etc. If you're a youngin or unemployed, you have time to do this. Some people are not tech savvy, not computer literate, and think cmd is some highly technical code. These people will pay you for results.
If you know what you are doing and can deliver, there's nothing wrong with marketing your skills. There is information out there on how to change the head gasket for my car, or install a new clutch. I don't have the right tools or the inclination to get under the hood to do this myself. I take the car to a repair facility. Same concept here.
Or better yet, why go to a doctor... There are books you can read to research your illness and determine a course of therapy. The list goes on and on.

Am I ignorant? I don't know, i'll let god be the judge of that. I do know one thing though, i'd much rather be ignorant than a low life moron.
The majority of people who do not know how to root there phones are not ignorant or lazy simply because they "lack knowledge". First off, you can't be ignorant and lazy at the same time wise guy...think about it for a second (just don't think too hard and hurt yourself)
Secondly, how are people supposed to know that rooting even exists if no body tells them? Are they just supposed to assume that when they purchase their device that it has a stock rom on it and is un-rooted? I'm sorry, but very few people are as wise or psychic as you or they may not have nerd friends to explain to them what rooting is, therefore they can not possibly know to look on the internet for how to root there phone because they have no clue that such a process exist.
this does not make them ignorant because they aren't choosing to not know how to root, they simply haven't learned the facts (and yes, the majority of people have no clue what rooting is, so go pat yourself on the back for being superior to all of these ignorant lazy people)
Lastly, most of these people on craigslist doing this junk tend to focus their advertising on customizable roms, free tethering, overclockingg, etc etc. They rarely emphasize the fact that they are rooting the phone which is wrong.
Taking advantage of consumers lack of knowledge is not a good thing. Just because it's the status quo doesn't justify it...That is ignorant.

Its not quite the same ... I mean, I get what you're saying ... but, skills? You aren't doing anything but taking someone else's work and using it for your financial betterment. Your argument would make more sense if you were repairing hardware or something ... acknowledgment isn't given for the people that have set up these simple and idiot proof root methods ... or the ROMs themselves. Sure, they might not say they 'made' the ROMs or rooting methods ... but they didn't say they didn't, either. And they don't have to do as much. I really don't care, and dont take my multiple posts as such, but its not really the same as all the things mentioned. Especially the doctor ****. LOL
Again, Im up late so that's the only reason I'm posting ... not hating, and if you are too dense or too busy to bother .... so be it. But I wont try to trivialize it with some bull**** analogies. This is a specific exploitation of someone else's work / services. This isn't changing some gasket in an automobile that fits across the board. This is a pretty specific exploitation.
Surgery is a skill and service ... coming over to make you a sandwich is about what this equates to. Don't mix 'skills' and 'near still born babies incapable of doing anything for themselves' as a service or a skill. More power to you if you can make money doing this ... but it is stupid. And sad.

there is no doubt that are people out there that don't know about rooting. i'm not arguing that. you said that "most" people don't know it even exists. that's a made-up statistic that you concocted in your head, probably around the same time that you started believing that it's impossible to be ignorant and lazy.
regardless, how does one know that rooting exists without anybody telling them? this is probably going to sound like i'm dividing by zero, but a possible answer is... they discover it themselves! yes, people are capable of doing that! the human brain is indeed quite impressive and capable of independent thought and education. people don't have to be told by someone that something exists. it is possible for things to be discovered without being told by someone. (how do you think america, or any physical element was discovered?)
put yourself in your grandma's shoes. she doesn't know anything about this technology stuff, but she is learning because recently she discovered that are phones out there that can do many things. these phones can let you browse the internet, use your phone as a hotspot, will even let you video chat with your grandchildren, and they even have these touchscreens that allow you to just use your fingers instead of having to press a bunch of buttons! amazing! being the curious little grandma that she is, she goes home, opens up internet.com, and decides to type "evo smartphone" into her AskJeeves toolbar that she has installed. Her mind is opened to a plethora of information where she discovers what is possible with these phones. She does her research and decides that she wants one.
the moral of the story? she wants a ****ing smartphone because of its capabilities, and she didn't learn everything she knew about because of someone telling her about it -- she did her research. "most" people dont just walk into a sprint store and buy an android smartphone not knowing what it is capable of. these people have played with sprint's demo phones, they have played with their friends' phones, they have watched youtube videos of it in action. they know what the **** the phone is capable of. being the curious humans that we are, a majority of us know for a fact that the things we buy are not limited just to what the manufactures make us believe. so don't give me that bull**** statement that you have to be psychic or have nerd friends with gadget toys to figure things out for yourself.

this sentence is very subjective. it's good for the person taking advantage of it because that means money in his pockets and some extra food on the table for his family. it's not good for the person being taken advantage of because he/she could be doing all this for free. being taken advantage of, and then realizing that you've been taken advantage of could be good for the customer because maybe that's what it takes to open his eyes and learn from his mistakes. in that case, it could be a good thing for both parties.
now, i dont necessarily agree with his tactics. i do feel that he should just be educating people; doing it for free or even much cheaper; or be more clear (and honest) when explaining what he is doing. but, that is not the case. he's simply trying to make a quick buck, and it might be working. that doesn't make him stupid or a moron. shady? sneaky? sure, but definitely not stupid.
