Hi, I've seen a couple of lag fixes out there and they seem to be working well. But why is it lagging? Slow rom/internal memory card? Bad FAT32 filesystem as one of the fix developers said in a thread?
I am curious about this because if it's hardware problem then I might wait for a bit longer before upgrading my phone and Samsung may be already working on it, but if it's just software then I like to get a new phone now (from my good old E71)
thanks a lot!

While the 16gb hardware is slower then the 1gb rom used it is not why it is lagging..what is causing the lag is Samsung decided to use their proprietary RFS file system which either does not work well with Android in general or has too big of a footprint aka inefficient thus causing a bottleneck of the I/O
cheers, then what about the leaked 2.2 ROM? Has Samsung done any improvement in the I/O performance at all?
I really like this phone but the laggy issue is annoying.
Well looks like not all galaxy s are lagging. You can find many people on forum without this problem. I'm one of them. 55 apps, adw, no task killers and no lags at all.

i'll disagree with the lag
i'm still using the stock ROM on mine, and i don't experience the lags some people are having.
i can browse fast, switch apps fast, play audio/video fast, launch GPS app fast, and get a lock fast even when the car is moving on the road already
i do leave stuff like Fring running in the backgroup for my IM and video calls, meanwhile the music player plays via Bluetooth to the car Deck or BT headphones, and using GPS to check my route for speed, traffic jam, etc.
email is constantly syncing, set to auto sync every hour
if i want to check the weather it loads up instantly

thanks a lot, you guys. But which Galaxy s are you using? Maybe there is a superior version or....I am in the UK so probably the international version?
i have the uk version, bought2 weeks ago. I noticed little lag, nothing major at all.
I decided to do the lag fix and the phone is now realllllyyyy fast with no lag

yes UK unlocked version is the international version, the same one from HK, and Singapore and many other countries from the old continent.
Except Korea / Brazil / China / USA they have their own.
I'm finally getting 0 lag too now I flashed to JM6 (I got lag on every other firmware). My Compass works for the first time too. I haven't tried GPS testing yet but my hopes are up. You may want to give JM6 a try.
afaik recent firmwares (jh2 for ex) have a fixed RFS driver that doesnt lag up and fragments, whatever the real technical reason is why Rfs is slow on first generation firmwares, so the "not all get it" isn't really just "luck" stuff.
actually this regular "my phone dont do this ur just unlucky" is just some form of disinformation that is pretty much annoying.
you can check if you get 1500+ in quadrant, you don't have the issue (and IO tests go through quickly), otherwise, you do

The stock galaxy s only gets about 800 in quadrant, but that score is only bettered by the nexus running froyo. It scored better than nexus on 2.1, desire and a gamut of other phones. But I do not read about these phone owners gripping about lag or need to go above 1500 in quadrant. Why?
Frankly, I have done the lag fix and my quadrant score is now 2137. But I do not feel any significant difference than when it was only 800. In other words, I dun feel that the phone was slow before the fix.
thanks everyone, I've got to say this is the most helpful forum I've ever been to.

Umm.. Don't take Quadrant for gospel. You could dump most of the OS on RAMdisk and you'll get awesome scores. We need a few test cases to ACCURATELY demonstrate the problem reliably, because quadrant only tests a few cases...
After installing the lag fix I noticed things were hanging more than normal. Un-installed it and things are fine again. Not sure if it was just something I had installed or what, but my phone still feels as 'fast' as after the fix.
yay!!!!!!!! i found my very first lag today
i had running media player over BT, GPS copilot, GPS mytracks, video Fring, and got the super mario running in the live wall paper
everything was able to funtion properly with some delay of course, with the exception of mytracks and media player
i'll try to reproduce the problem and see if i can pinpoint which of the 2 program is causing the lag (mytrack vs samsung media player)
Quadrant scores really have **** to do with everyday performance for the majority of people. You can post up 2300 in Quadrant and still experience lag during normal use. Think of it like 3DMark vs. Actual game performance on a PC.
Every phone is susceptible to the lag problem as every galaxy s uses Samsung's proprietary rfs format. Also, Crapwiz is part of the problem. The sooner Samsung and other manufacturers get their heads out of their asses and offer their products with stock android, the better. Give people the option of using Sense or Crapwiz but dont force it on them.
It speaks volumes to the quality of Samsung programmers when Launcher Pro is smoother while running on top of Crapwiz than Crapwiz by itself. The sooner the ASOP ROM is finished, the sooner the phone becomes more pleasant to use by those of us who dont need shiny things, facebook/twatter and iphone ui clones waved constantly in front of us.

Personally, i noticed slight lag.. very very slight lag or hanging when opening some apps for the first time.
However after upgrading to JM1, i haven't noticed that at all. Not saying it is solved. This has just been my experience.

We don't know thats the cause.. Someone said the reason RFS was slow is that "it doesn't buffer stuff" before.. But never seen confirmation. So anyone have actual proof its RFS?
I was on the stock firmware DJF4 and this has lots of lag. I have about 200+ apps installed and it usually takes a long time to boot up (esp Appdrawer). And after using awhile with it, even opening phone/messaging/contact lags 2-5 secs.
I upgraded to the official DJG4 yesterday and now the phone performs much better and battery life has improved (i.e. the standby time increased 30-50%) with the same apps/configuration of the old firmware.
After 36 hours with the new firmware, I daresay the lag issue is now gone. The DJG4 firmware also comes with handy task manager. Free RAM now seldom goes below 60MB. I tested by opening 20-30 apps over and over and there is still no lag. And I dont even have a auto-kill task manager running.
Will it be smooth like the ipad, when ics comes? Ive tried the overcome rom and there is still a bit a jerkiness/lagginess when using the screen capture function, exiting in and out, flipping through pages etc.
No. Get an ipad if smooth scrolling homescreens are the most important feature on a tablet for you.
3.2 will give you that smoothness. i use adw launcher ex and it pretty much fixed any lag. also recommend using spareparts+ to speed up opening window.
doesnt hurt to oc either
if you're not going to contribute then you can just keep ur post to yourself slack04
Everything you're asking can only be answered with speculation and dreams dude. I'm on 3.2 and don't see any of the lag you speak of.
Yes, ICS will bring hardware acceleration to the entire experience, should be a transformation.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Answering the op question what lag? Sure if you have a slow device running top of the range os you will get lag
But since 3.2 I haven't seen any lag
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
I think lag can be caused by many issues. For one, widgets with heavy graphics and constant refreshes can use up a lot of resources. There are also poorly made apps running in the background that may slow things down. I would just keep the homescreen as simple as possible if performance is a concern.
If ICS runs as smooth as it does on the Galaxy Nexus, yes, it will.
We will see it as soon as the first "complete" ROMs pop up, everything else is complete speculation.
3.2 made the tab a lot better, but still not completely lagfree in my opionion. Its response time varies from perfect (browser) to mediocre (app switcher - at least until its open).
Are you running on stock rom? I am running Task650 & Phantoms "In Paris" V5 OC'd to 1.4Gz with ADW launcher and it is pretty darn smooth even on Honeycomb 3.1. It will only get better with the 3.2 update coming in the near future. Check it out if you haven't already done so!
hardware acceleration in ICS improve performence allot , see alpha builds on the single core original galaxy tab 7 and HTC hd2 on youtube and you will see the big improvement in speed even with live wallpapers
Though it is true that ICS will have hardware acceleration, android will always lag at some point, seeing as it is an OS capable of being installed on a wide range of devices, and it can not be fully optimized for 1 device to make it lag-free.

this is not 100% true , the kernel function is to make the hardware make use of the options in the software ,so that is why each device has its own kernel , thus with good kernel each device can benifit from the hardware acceleration on its way , so existance of (hardware acceleration ) with supported kernel should eliminate lag
Im using the overcome rom, isnt that the best if i want the smoothest experience possible?

But many companies don't bother with a good kernel. They pretty much use "Does it boot? Get it out the door" as a mantra.
The reason iOS is so smooth is because Apple tests devices for months and months to make sure the user experience is great. They put user experience over anything else, even features. I still get terrible lag on 3.2 while using my GT8.9. But hopefully ICS will fix that. But I won't bet money that all the lag will be gone. There's just not much optimization there, and throwing more cores at the software isn't going to fix that.

swiping between homescreens with a decent amount of widget and you wil notice a bit of lag, also using the tab in portrait mode is also laggy(sad to see it still havent been fix). The ics roms are still in alpha i believe? Do you guys think it will be smoother when everything is final?

i hate to say it but its most likely a hardware issue... the Tegra-II (2) is a very crappy processor (depending on who you talk to i guess) they [samsung/nvidia] didnt really think this through when they created this tablet... MHO...
Edit* "Hardware Limitations"
I don't use many widgets but I have absolutely no lag. So try reflashing. but even still once its finished it will be even faster.
and I think its technically in beta now.
the portrait mode in CM9 is still not there yet though. but I never use portrait mode so it doesn't bother me.
are you overclocking at all?
TBH I'm not sure why you felt that complaining deserved creating a new thread.
Mine is butter smooth in portrait or landscape... using ICS.

I don't know, you can use adw and there's one lag whatsoever.
maybe try closing any background apps that are running. They could take up RAM and slow down the tab
I have ICS with NO widgets and flashed 3x and still have some lag, not a lot but no butter smoothness as some of you claim.
And I refuse to use ADW because it makes it feel like an oversized phone, and this is a real Tablet
It's pretty smooth for me, even with a couple of widgets on the main screen.
You don't need to be worried about it, if anything look for the Xoom ICS videos. That is a finished update for a very similar hardware tablet. It's a lot better than the current incarnation of ICS to the Galaxy Tab.
Not to mention that ICS is still pretty alpha, if not just experimental.

TBH this is as smooth as ics gets. android as a whole is not known for butterly dripping smooth, android is a full blown os for mobile phone / tablet with unspeakable power. the power to one day rival laptops not to rival butter for smoothness! if all you want is butter smooth transition moving from screen to screen, wait for a windows phone os tablet or get an ipad.
Tegra2 libs/drivers are outdated. Once source is released then I believe there will be a significant improvement. Head over to the cyanogen webpage, where cyanogen basically says what I stated above.

Disable wallpaper scrolling. It definitely solves the lag problem on homescreen. Use trebuchet, apex etc. But only on landscape mod not on portrait. It's a Tegra 2 issue. Every device that comes with Tegra 2 have it.

But, even the galaxy tab 7.7 with it's 1.4ghz exynos cpu was very laggy on honeycomb when watching it on you tube, the smoothness difference between that and the galaxy tab 10.1 was very little. So it's more of a android tablet ui problem rather than a tegra problem, I believe. The tegra 2 isn't that bad; when overclocked to 1.2-1.4ghz to keep it up to date with other tabs.
I have never experienced much lag at all on my Tab.. Have tried both ICS versions and they both flat out fly! Task's ROM 14 Slim which is TW 3.2 based is screaming fast as well...
I think some people may have a poorly written app(s) running in the background that's zapping memory..
portrait lag is never going to be fixed unless a dev here fixes it for them.
the xoom has official ics and its still laggy in portrait and in other places....so counting on the devs here for something

The UI problem I'm talking about occurs only on portrait mode. It's buttery smooth on landscape but lags on portrait doesn't matter whatever you do. That's the Tegra 2 problem.
Some have pretty low standards for defining lag. Lag for me is anything below 30 frames per second. 60 is optimal, 30 is minimum.
With that said, my gtab gets really laggy when LWP is activated (which isn't the case for the SGS2) despite running on task rom + pershoot [email protected] 1.4ghz.
..and yes I'm running ADW launcher.
I hope that ICS will fix this but im not expecting too much given that Tegra 2 is a POS processor that could hardly run anything properly.
I have to say, I am not impressed with this thing. Right out of the box I noticed that it was MUCH laggier than my Galaxy Nexus.
I figured it was just the bloated Samsung skin that caused it so I instantly rooted it and installed CM9 4.0.4. However, that doesn't seem to have helped much.
I've found that even just typing an email in Gmail causes the onscreen keyboard to become extremely slow after typing the first paragraph, to the point where I have to close out of Gmail and re-open it in order to get it to respond correctly again.
Is there something I'm missing here? Shouldn't this thing be much snappier than my Galaxy Nexus? Is there another ROM I should be using?
The two Rom's I like right now on mine are either the Galaxy Task or Clean Rom.
You could also try AOKP, that seemed to do pretty well on mine too.
Tegra 2 (or Tegra in general) just blows. At least for a device this size.
Have you tried using different keyboards? If not, it might be an idea to download and experiment with some to find if any resolve the lag issue. Just an idea.

While tegra 2 isn't great, it shouldn't have problems with ICS. Even on a mostly stock honeycomb build, my tab is running pretty smoothly without overclocking. Except for the rare scrolling hiccup. Most likely the build isn't optimized well enough, and CM9 nightlies are still alpha builds at best. I would suggest either flashing a more stable debloated honeycomb build or waiting for at least an RC version of CM9.
I feel the same way, it's so slow its going backwards. I have almost stopped using it all together because it's a pain to use xd

Why would you ever think this tablet would be snappier than the Gnex? The Gnex is newer and has a newer and faster processor, with newer, more optimized software.
I don't get why you would think a tablet produced in May/June of last year would be somehow snappier than a device produced in October/November.
While I haven't found the tablet to have the same problems you described, I have to say I'm not very impressed with the Tab's performance. But we shouldn't be so quick to judge ICS; the drivers are community written so I wasn't expecting a lot out of them. ICS ROMs are smooth but there's always some sort of thing that pisses me off, or something that sparks a lagfest. Honeycomb ROMs seem to be a lot smoother. But I seem to notice a slice of laglaglag when the tablet is in portrait. Not that I use it in portrait, but still.
Games were a lagfest in both ICS and Honeycomb, the graphics looked pretty good but what use was it when the games are running at 10FPS? The only thing I can really say I like about this tablet is everything it's not supposed to do; run Ubuntu, both inside Android, and a native install of Ubuntu with Android removed. I like playing PS1 games on it too, something that crappy iPad couldn't do.
Another thing; tablet apps. Developers seem to ignore tablet users. Most apps I've used made me feel like my tablet was a big ass phone, and I've seen this complaint a lot.
But I gotta say I really regret not waiting. I wanted to go for the Transformer Prime but didn't want to wait. I regret letting my lack of patience get the best of me.
I hope you actually flashed a rom after flashing CWM or else there's obviously going to be no difference. I somehow have never experienced issues on my end. Everything is fast for me, with either a stock rooted/unrooted rom or a custom rom. And if you couldnt see a difference between Honeycomb and ICS on your tablet, then something must be wrong. Even with the small glitches and bugs, it's very fast. Maybe you should overclock as well.
same here- galaxy task10 is very smooth - couple it with ADW and it is very very snappy - ICS gives me a little bit more snap - so not sure what standards the OP is referencing since i also have Gnex and it does not feel any faster than my current tab

Agreed with the previous 2 posters. I have used cyanogen, and am currently using task 14. While I too am wishing I had waited and bought the transformer (for other reasons), I am very happy with the responsiveness of my tab. Task 14 is, for me, a very smooth take on honeycomb. Add in some of boosted's themes for that ICS look, and I am quite content.

I have to admit that I am upset with the smoothness of ics. Whilst it is smoother than honeycomb, it still has a long way to go before I would call it smooth. But, I am not making judgements on ics until Sammy release their official version, and hopefully that will be smoother as it isn't all the honeycomb kernel source code patched and hack to make ics work. Also, does anyone else notice that on cm9 games feel like they have a lower frame rate than honeycomb, I was comparing games like mine craft on cm9 compared to my friends stock gtab10.1 and his stock 3.2 had a much higher frame rate, does anyone worse find this the case please?

I also notice the Galaxy tab 10.1 is laggy.
I own an Asus transformer prime and the missus owns the galaxy tab, and its true that out of the box the asus is much much faster, mostly on the home screens. I had attributed this as a difference between HC 3.2 and ICS, we shall see.
However,
I cant mention enough just how vastly superior the wifi is on the galaxy tab. The difference is night and day. Oh it works on the asus alright (I have the latest serial version), but it seems to be very patchy. After an hour of using the browser on my TF prime and then picking up the galaxy tab the connection feels so much more solid and responsive and using the tab comes as something of a relief.
Thing is, it doesnt really matter what the specs are on paper, all I really care about is responsiveness of a good looking UI and good wifi. I feel that the tf prime is going to need a hard mod to sort out the wifi, which i will not do. On the other hand, I feel that a software update on the tab could sort out some of its lag issues, which would make the tab more useful in my household for our needs.

On the other hand, I feel that a software update on the tab could sort out some of its lag issues, which would make the tab more useful in my household for our needs.

Well a combination of ICS and a quad-core processor will blow away the Galaxy Tab without question.
stock = sucks
stock + swype keyboard = sucks ^2
In my case I flashed Gtask rom or overcome with pershoot kernel and keep avoiding swype.. and everything runs like silk now.
i'm not experiencing ANY lag what so ever after i flashed this rom:
[ROM] [ICS] Android Open Kang Project - p4/wifi/vzw - milestone 4

I'm not intersted in Quadrant or Antutu scores. I'm just curious if after upgrading to stock Samsung ICS you actually notice speed improvements on your note.
Meaning, does switching between screens seem faster? Does moving around the phone feel slower? Things of that nature. Now that the hardware GPU is actually being used can you see/feel the difference?
Thanks
I can't recall whether the app drawer and screens scroll better but one thing is for certain, web browsing and scrolling through the market is hugely improved.
Messaging is also less laggy and more responsive, the S Memo has been improved a great deal.
It's a good update but I wouldn't be shocked to see another incremental update to polish it off.
For me it seems more laggy and drains battery faster. Few apps crashed as well. I'm sure sammy will release few more updates but I'm not too thrilled for this release. I have heard people bricking their phone & missing key feature apps for premium suite (MyStory and s-note) with this update too, feels like Samsung did half ass job on it.

The areas that it is definitely faster for me are:
1. Coming out of the lock screen
2. Pulling down and pushing back up the notification bar.
3. In ADW EX, pinching to zoom in and out of the homescreens and homescreen previews is smooth now, It used to be pretty stuttered in LC2.
4. Music apps that require touch input to trigger sounds eg. Solo, TheDrum, Grand Piano. There is noticeably less latency between touching the screen and hearing the sounds.
ICS after 24 hours
I can confirm the following after testing this release under myriad conditions
ICS Stunner is a 100 times better!!
seriously, all this hype and it still looks the same

Hi There,
First off all, the N-7000 didn't move officially to Ics yet, since we're all still waiting for the first Samsung stock leak.
Now what you see, are some AOSP, AOKP and CM roms based on Ics 4.0.4. They are more than ready for daily use, stable, but surely missing some Nice features like SPen....
On this forum, there is one leak from Samsung, witch is making Success, a chineese Ics leak, that is originally for the GT-9220, A Galaxy note released in the china, but not with the same processor, thus making the leak not compatible with the N-7000.
Super Devs like Chainfire, maxicett, Alba and others, took this and made it usefull for us!
Some says that it's risky, but believe me, I'm on the maxicet's one " TheMidTeam", and for me is the Best so far!
All the Samsung features are present, The rom is smooth, super fast, stable, and the Best is yet to come, once we'll have our own N-7000 Ics Samsung leak : let's say this Q of the year.
Once said, my freind : make your backup and choose one of the aboves Ics.
Just follow every step the Dev says, and you are set!
Good luck.

Really!?
One week out of the forum, and I become so outdated!
Well I Will check it out,
Any way, as I said, Things Will get much better.
Thank you so much my freind.
All the ICS ROMs I've tried were snappier than GB in general.
Installed it yesterday. Cannot really say it is noticably faster at this point. I have noticed the browser is faster and has many more settings. I have not had any issues and think it is a nice upgrade. It is certainly not slower.
For me its made a massive difference, everything loads instantly now, totally impressed how much so, never thought it would make that much difference.
My note started slower than with GB. Some FC, unable to use the camera, for example, as it frozes. But after some use, things are getting better.
I feel like apps data needs to be updated somehow, so with the use of every application it's getting better.
Anyway, I'm a bit "disappointed". I felt a higher improvement when installed ICS on my Desire HD, so I thing I expected in some way that Note will have a great improvement too. And yes it's better (now, with the use), but not so much as expected.
Maybe is just because with GB my note was already nearly perfect
How'd you get it, being in Plano, TX?

Initial releases are usually buggy and it seems that it's the case here.
What I can put it down to is whether or not ICS was installed after a full wipe as it appears that those who did it this way don't have the problems you mention above.
I also got it from kies as I was on stock LC1 (DBT) and have these annoying problems so if it continues I will either wait for an update from sammy (anyones guess when this might happen) or wipe then flash the new ICS.
when i first installed it was fast, now that i did a hard reset its insanely fast!!! i am very pleased with the update

I updated kies on my computer and plugged in my GNote. I have an DBT unlocked version I bought on Amazon in December. It updated just fine.

Yeah it's probably best to start with a clean slate. When you've got all kinds of data from GB floating around while using ics stuff can get borked and whatnot.

ICS in general is ok but I'm having issues with bluetooth. It regularly loses connection with my Nissan Connect car system. Also before on GB when streaming music over bluetooth the car unit would show the name of the track playing, on ICS it doesn't.
The exact same thing happened when I updated my Galaxy S2 to ICS. I want to try another brand phone, maybe HTC, thats running ICS to see if it is a problem with ICS or my Nissan Connect system.
As I wasn't having any serious issues on GB I reverting back until the bluetooth problem is sorted.
