Use "FlashTool" (Search the forum for this). It's the easiest way to root ATM and you can Install xRecovery and Optimize (JIT) as well using this same tool.

The best and easy way to root is the Z4root. Just install the app, run it, click on Permanent root and you are there after a reboot of the handset (automatic).
You can verify you are rooted successfully by looking for a app called "Superuser" with icon of a android skeleton kind of thing.
The next one is "super1clickroot" method which involves running a program in your PC and using it to root. Search for the above mentioned term and you can find the guide on how to do it.
Hope this helps.

What is your installed apps? Check the permission in your Superuser apps. All apps that need ROOT goes there.

Root help, i'm confused!

Hi there everyone,
I want to root my Desire HD, but I don't want to install any custom roms, radios, etc. I only want to root my HD so I can install apps that require root. I see no advantage in installing any custom ROMs, so I want to leave that alone.
What's the best way to go about this? I've found this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427. Do I need to do anything else, except what is in this guide? I'm terrified of bricking my phone!
Could I brick my device if I made a mistake with the above guide, or S-OFF?
Thanks in advance,
Alex
Sorry for the question (no doubt it's been asked before), I've rooted my old HTC Hero before, found that easy, but this I'm confused!
Hi there. I'm actually quite a noob at all this since rooting is all new to me but seems you and I went after similar threads because I also read that guide to rooting the DHD at first. But after some further reading I discovered this is actually a much more difficult method of rooting (maybe because it's older?).
It will really, really help to look in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846248 as it explains so much and has many useful links.
But in answer to your question read this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076 A much easier method of rooting =)
Good luck.

After I've ran that step - do I have permroot and I don't need to do anything else? I only want root, not custom ROM's.
I'm scared of doing the permroot, sounds like I'll break my phone if I even attempt it! Is there any way to ensure it will work?
Yeh you will be perma rooted if you follow the steps. About ensuring it will work, this is something I am now looking into myself. I'm getting the impression that it's possible to create a copy of the stock rom even without the perma root and using that to do a recovery in the event of a root failure. Though I would have thought perma root would have been needed to do a recovery in the first place....
I've got a thread below yours where I'm still trying to get a clear answer as to how to do all that. If I find out I'll let u know =P

By "if you follow the steps" - do you mean I only have to follow step 1 for perm root? Or more than that?
Sorry for all the questions, I really do appreciate your help, thanks!
And also - if it fails, the stock WWE RUU can be flashed to restore the phone, can't it?
EDIT: Followed step one, restarted device and everything - perm root stays. Thanks for all your help mate!

Go all way through these steps from 1.1 to 1.6. Once you've done 1.6 your phone should be rooted. Just download the terminal emulator from the market and do that last thing that is mentioned to test the perma rooting. If that works then your good.
Oh just so you know the temp root option in Visionary is apparently completely safe and won't harm nothing because it makes no changes to the system partition.
Not sure about the WWE RUU. I'm not sure it will be compatible with your current ROM (Only thing I do know is that if it's older then your current it won't work). Don't know how to flash it either tbh, that's something I ain't found out yet =P

Instructions on rooting your CDMA Hero with z4root

This is a tutorial for people who have trouble rooting with z4root and get a half rooted phone after clicking 'permanent root' in the first place.
1. Download z4root from 4shared. (Latest version is 1.3 I believe?)
2. install the z4root apk.
3. Open z4root, make sure usb debugging is on. (Settings>applications>development>usb debugging)
4. Click the temporary root button.
5. Once the temporary root completes, click the permanent root button.
6. When the permanent root completes and says 'rebooting..', pull your battery and boot up the phone.
That's it. You're now rooted. Install clockworkmod recovery through Rom Manager from the market or download the recovery.img and zip it in a HERCIMG.zip and install it via hboot (which is my personal preference)
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA Premium App
The first time I used z4root I was really frustrated when it got stuck on the "rebooting" and it seemed to take several tries. The key is to open your app drawer after rooting. If you see Superuser, you're good.
Also, just want to point out that the HERCIMG.zip installing only works if you're S-OFF. In any case, if you're S-OFF you don't even have to go through the root process, anyway

Also to add... quit recommending flashing through rom manager. Its horrible and too many things go wrong. ALWAYS flash in recovery and bootloader. Will solve a ton of flash problems.

Will this method work for all HTC Hero radios?
Does anyone know if this will work on an HTC Sprint Hero with a radio of 2.42.02.10.29 Mar/2010,16:02:39
I have read that people have had issues. I was also told that I would need to update my phone to FROYO. Is that true?
All I want to do is move stuff to my SD card to free up space.
Also, if I need to, can I unroot? Thanks!!
Mike
thisll work on all the official sprint updates

[Q] I think my root is jacked up

I tried searching but couldn't find anything related...
I was rooted before I upgraded to 4.5.141. I saw a post of someone saying they used an app called rootkeeper to temporarily disable root, installed the update, then used rootkeeper to reroot. I tried that, but now none of the apps that require root access are working properly. Is there a way to remove root from my phone? I want to remove it so I can root using the other method. thanks
And can this be done without flashing back to factory? I don't want to lose my phone's configuration
Are you sure you are rooted right now?
Try Root Checker to make sure.
i too am in the same boat with you. I ran the root checker and it confirms i'm SOL.
I just want my wifi tether back.
I don't really even remember how i rooted last summer. guess it's back to the research

Root Lollipop

MOD EDIT @gregbradley
Also, users should be aware that Kingo root sends your IMEI to an unknown IP address in china during the root process, you have been warned. For more information read the whole OP here
Getting ROOT rights to Android 5.0 Lollipop (KingRoot) It is not my work. Taken from a russian forum.
1.Download and install latest version of Kingroot to phone.
2.Run the application and get the Root. Important - do not restart the device, because it can lead to failure in obtaining Root.
3.Enable "USB debugging" and "unknown sources".
4.Install the latest version from the PC XZDualRecovery to get full access to reading and writing to the section System (connect your phone to a PC via a cable, run the install.bat to select a number " 1 "on the screen to confirm a request for superuser)
5.Phone will reboot automatically to recovery. Install supersu.
6.Boot
Files to root.

Yes I believe so. I have the Kinguser icon in my app draw, but It wont open. I deleted all files associated with King via ES Root Explorer, and cannot find anything.
I still wouldn't recommend anyone else doing this, god knows what information was sent to China upon installing it, but I really wanted root.

I tried that, it needs internet connectivity. However, the reason I allowed this was I understand that this root is based on a Ping exploit, which would need internet connecivity to work.
I figured the risk werent THAT high for me. I dont re-use passwords and no bank details stored on my phone.
Can confirm this method works.
You might want to try going in Airplane mode if you're paranoid for the Chinese. In any case, Kingroot + XZDR + SuperSU 2.49 works perfectly.
