Launching tomorrow?

Nexus One gets it first OTA of course, and we probably get it second since I doubt it will be a huge problem to port.
UPDATE!! (11-15-10)

Gingerbread coming in "the next few weeks"'
We're in the final stretch for 2.3 here, folks.
I hope its good!

No Android release has been regular, they are always major...plus the launch of wp7 had to be on their minds. And isn't gingerbread the OS that will be on Android tablets? If so, GINGERBREAD WILL BE ON POINT . Also excited to see HTC sense over it.

Well I don't think HTC will have this for a while since the first release will be pure vanilla for the Nexus One. Gingerbread isn't just for tabs, though. The Nexus S is going to have Gingerbread as well, so we can expect that.
Unfortunately, no one knows what will be different with Gingerbread, so far.
I can't wait to saw some fresh air on my HD2.
I hope so.

I've been reading that too, but that would mean no update for evo, HD and who knows how many other 4+" devices and would piss off a lot of people. I'm sure the devs here will find a way to adapt the tech to work for us, at the very least. Like lowering the res and the dpi to compensate? We'll see when the time comes.

Because all it takes is a couple of devs to port it, as it has been with every Android version on pretty much every somewhat popular device. There's just absolutely no reason to assume it's not going to be ported.
lol good call. hopefully dev team up soon!!!
The problem is the source code hasn't been dropped yet, so if it was based off the sdk it'll be slow and have no Google apps, plus it probably wont run well on our screen size.

Well when you run the SDK version in an emulator and optimize for mobile screen res, honeycomb UI reverts back to standard Android UI so maybe it has a built in mobile version.
Ice cream cone is the next update for phones, it won't be long before that's released. Honeycomb does include code for reverting the screen to phone resolution, but from what people can tell, it isn't finished and is probably included as a starting point for future versions where the phone and tablet can both use the same build. Honeycomb probably won't be compatible with phones, at least not now or with a lot of work. A later 3.x version of android may work with both tablets and phones.
what version is the ice cream gonna be and whats the improvement, anyone knows, thanks

no one is really sure, some say 2.4, and some say 3.x, since Honeycomb will supposedly support phones as well, it wouldn't make sense to go backwards in the version numbers, we'll just have to wait and see. .

Ice-cream is definitely 2.4, and Honeycomb is 3.0. Honeycomb is aimed at larger screens (tablets) so may not be suitable for some phones (but it will still run, if you can get it installed). Ice-cream is aimed at phones, not tablets, so it will be easier for devs to port over to the device of their choice (HD2 please ).
You guys act like you know for sure. No offense, but you don't. There has been no official word about HoneyComb on phones and no official word about Ice Cream at all.
It is my opinion that Google would not restrict it's Android versions to a set of numbers (i.e. 2.x for phones, 3.x for tablets.) That would make no sense. It is also my opinion that 2.4 will be Gingerbread still, much like 2.0 and 2.1 were Eclair. I'm guessing a major version change, such as 3.5 or 4.0 will merge the phone and tablet branches into Ice Cream. But I'm not "sure" about anything.
The Dell Streak has had HoneyComb ported to it. It seems like it wouldn't be a stretch to put it on this phone, too, even if it's not meant for a 4.3" screen.
All current gen Xperia models are going to be updated to Ice cream sandwich (Android 4.0) after October's 2.3.4 update!!!

They have always been underrated(especially to Nokia in the Balkans)...and I don't understand how they are losing money on the play....
They are losing money because of their battered reputation for abandoning customers with their previous handsets. It seems like management has turned a new leaf. 2012 will probably be the now or never come back year for sony ericsson. They own like 1.7%of the market shares as of July =/ the earthquake played a big role at affecting those figures though.

Hopefully Verizon doesn't slow down that update for us r800x users...but I'm not holding my breath. (Of course, barring any complications with r800x development it won't matter to those of us lucky enough to have locked in root.)
On that note, gosh I hope SE doesn't go under. They are currently the only company offering anything resembling a vanilla android experience on Verizon.

Read the article carefully... A London based small potatoes representative confirmed the 4.0 upgrade...... Not the ceo or any department head on charge of upgrades and firmware... Take the news with a grain of salt.... We don't even know 4.0 is a good for single core phones... I find gingerbread to run real smooth already.

Anyhow, If the new ICS will run great on our phone then that would be awesome..
I'm excited to know the full latest features, I'm excited to taste that new flavor..
I hope you all know that officially, sony have made no decision on if it will bring ICS to the 2011 range of experia devices.
Infact there current official stance is "When it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view."

Google is touting ICS as their one OS fits all design. It's extremely doubtful that it will be dual core only, considering that and A) Dual core handsets are still in their infancy B) The dual cores out there aren't really faster than the single cores. I can see ICS bringing improved support for dual core, but it's a retarded business decision for Google to cut out single core phones. Even the latest version of windows doesn't do that.
Also, who cares what Sony says, the developers on here will ensure that if we really want ICS on our phones we will be able to.

It won't just be for dual core as they have to deliver it to the NS and that's single core. I had the X10 and waited ages for the 2.1 update only to be dissatisfied because of how slow and laggy it was, still custom ROM's made up for SE's crap.

Its based on honeycomb correct? Can anyone name 1 tablet that has a single core and runs honeycomb natively?
Nook Color, if I recall properly. It uses the very same Honeycomb as "native" tablets.
Plus, I want to remind you that dual cores are still top of the line. The midrange and low range of new devices (think of Optimus Sol or Galaxy Ace) will have to be updated too...
Well, even though Samsung and Google have delayed their event, Ice Cream Sandwich is around the corner and the funny thing is that still nothing has been confirmed of its features.
Looking forward to it on your Desire Z?
It'll be nice, but I'm sure not much of a change for day to day use for me. I'm more excited about getting it on my Nook Color.

Actually doesnt make sense but let the CM team do what they want....
In related news to CM, CM 7.1 final was released today
I would like to point out that there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that there will not be a 4.0 upgrade available for HTC VISION. Need I remind you all that there was an official upgrade to Android 2.2 for HTC SAPPHIRE/MAGIC32B made almost exactly ONE YEAR AGO? Yes, approximately the exact same time that HTC VISION was initially made available.
Also remember that the 32B was a 192 MB RAM device where only 97 MB was actually available to Linux. This significant upgrade from Android 1.6 to 2.2 required some MEMORY REDISTRIBUTION via new SPL to increase the available RAM to 112 MB. HTC VISION is not starved for RAM as the 32B was. HTC VISION has plenty of space left within the system partition (in fact on mine, there are 262 MB of free space on /system of over 400 total -- clearly intended to leave space for upgrades). Unlike the 32B, the specifications of Vision are far more than adequate, and even with a device as limited as 32B, they made the upgrade.

CM "team", as well as all the other rom cookers out there (yes, they are cookers, Android is written by Google, CM just cooks it and adds in a few goodies.) do a TERRIBLE job of versioning.
I once suggested a much more sensible approach to versioning, which is used by many other downstream open source projects... but they threw a tantrum.
Versioning of Android ROMs should be as follows;
UPSTREAMNAME-UPSTREAMVERSION-DOWNSTREAMREVISION.DOWNSTREAMNAMEVERSION.ARCHITECTURE
Obviously ARCHITECTURE doesn't apply directly, but this could be replaced with DEVICE.
So.... CM7.1 for VISION should be versioned as
android-2.3.7-0.CM7.1.vision
With this, if they make a minor update (that they would normally call CM7.1.1), it would increment the DOWNSTREAMREVISION, so the new version would be android-2.3.7-1.CM7.1.vision.
I.e., the point here would be to keep the priority on the upstream version rather than downstream, because "android-2.3.7" is FAR more important than "CM7.1". Quite frankly, the "CM" version means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Nothing. There is nothing confirmed for Ice Cream Sandwich at all. Google has had it tightly wrapped up.
The only thing we do know that it is Android 4.0
Besides that:
Facial recognition features, new APIs to reduce development fragmentation, a unification of phone and tablet UIs and its APIs.
Nothing else is confirmed with sources beside it.
Sorry title should say Ice Cream Sandwich.

I don't think it is that Gingerbread is "better" than ICS, but it is certainly better for current devices (dual core and less) in terms of performance. It's like installing Windows 7 on a Pentium 4. It works, but it will be slow due to CPU performance.
Honestly, I have zero issues with Gingerbread on the Play. I tried ICS for awhile. It was nice, but the loss of performance was just too much to handle. I went back to Gingerbread and everything is smooth, fast...a great gameplay experience.
I won't be moving to ICS until I own a quad core gaming phone

I'll tell you one thing. Battery life on the stock kernel on gingerbread is better than ANY other kernel on any other rom.
well imho the hype about ICS it overrated anyway.
If you see the differneces we will get - there is barely anything I need...
The only thing I like about it is the accelerated UI - making things smoother - but if the startup will take long there for - it isn't worht it... all the smoothness is gone by then.
and if u follow up the "resons for ICS" they mentioned- the list is a joke - list of gimmics - noting important - and the important ones can be done already by 3rd party software...
Even im looking forward to an update - casue im an update junkie - I rarhter w8 a bit longer - and if it is really "slower" I even would go back...

Ofcourse It's going to work better.. The Ice cream sandwich rom we have is a beta. The only way we're going to know whats better is to be patient and wait for the final release rom. and then let our clever devs work on it. Personally, I'll be using ice cream sandwich, ram hog or not. The UI upgrades and the general little touches it adds are worth it in my opinion. Maybe not everyones opinion but it is mine.
I'm personally just greatful that sony are updating the phones. my brothers LG Optimus black got Gingerbread in january. We have a good company who learnt from their mistakes in the donut-eclair phases and are still giving us an ice cream sandwich update before a dual core motorola device with a gig of ram is going to get it, That shows their commitment I think.
