Hello all,
First off, this site is awesome. With a little reading, I've rooted/s=off my new mytouch4g with no issues. I've also created a nandroid backup as well as having the PD15IMG ready in case....cos you never know
I've been looking at roms for a bit. Iced Glacier seems like a "beginner" rom, removed tmobile bloat, some new stuff added, etc. CM roms sound awesome, but I'm not sure I want to go that extreme right off. I'd like all the features of the phone to function until I figure out what I use and what I could live with out....etc.
Is there a rom out there that is basically stock, with all the crap like yahoo messeger, yahoo mail, rock band, monopoly qik vid chat, etc removed....with maybe a slightly OC'd kernel? 1.5ish or so?
I realize that I can now remove the software I don't like myself. However I'm not sure I feel comfortable installing a oc'd kernel myself. I like the sense UI, but as I understand it slows the phone a bit.
I guess what Im looking for is a rom with the stock UI look/feel, with none of the crap installed and and OC'd kernel that runs faster than the bone stock setup. I still want to be able to use wifi calling, hotspot....etc if needed. Or would this be a waste of time?
As I said, the forums are awesome. If I've missed a post on this very subject I'm sorry in advance!

The ROM you are looking for is Iced Glacier.
And Cyanogen's ROMs aren't extreme. If anything they are the slimmed down variant of Android. They way it was meant to be IMHO.

Agreed, Ice Glacier seems like the best fit for your described wants, and you can always use root explorer to remove the apps you dont want from the /system/app folder.
and while CM isnt as scary as it seems, I DO understand that, being new to the whole custom ROM scene, the sheer number of customizations and tweaks available in it can seem rather daunting.
I think I will try out the unthemed version of IC. The blues and blacks are a lil too much for me at least. Thanks!

I have a BELL DZ which I unlocked, rooted and did s-off. I then flashed it with Paul O'briens sense ROM but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Looking through the development section I notice that pretty much every thread gives very basic instructions on how to flash the ROM but some really make it difficult for a n00b such as myself to understand.
What is de-odexed and what does it do? What is zip-aligned? Many of the ROMs don't say if they are for G2 or DZ. Some of the threads are 200+ pages and it's impossible to find out if there are issues with the ROM quickly and easily.
All I want is to have the following:
-Overlocked to 1.4ghz (or near)
-Wake via trackpad button
-no normal functions broke (wifi, data etc.)
-Sense
-Bloatware removed
-No issues with battery life
Am I better with a stock ROM? Is there a way to get the OC and trackpad button thing without flashing a custom ROM?
alright i am here to help sir. while i do have a tmobile g2, the phone is exactly the same and i believe that the roms work for either phone.
1. if you are going to go with a sense rom, i would HIGHLY suggest going with Virtuous ROM. it is a combined effort with the wonderful devs of rmk and eViL D. the updates and patches are always coming, and the rom is nearly perfect. the thread is awesome and your answer is almost always going to be answered. one of the more favorite things about this is the kernel choices that is offered through rom manager and is always up to date with an update, or patches. there are 5 kerne choices that one allows up to 1.501 GHZ. if there is a problem with the rom there WILL be a fix for it.
2. and of course there is cyanogen. i do in fact love stock android, but i stick with the ROM above because i am really digging sense and all of its goodies. cyanogen has limitless possibilities with custimzations and stuff to make it your own. and always have the options of flashing tons of themes and stuff from people who make them, where there is zero themes going for the virtuous roms.
and to repsond to your waking with trackpad and such, there isnt a way to maintain that with just stock. you would have to flash the cyanogen bacon bits that allows it(i believe) which can be found in ROM manager and is easily flashable. either way you cannot go wrong with whatever you choose, but its all about what you prefer.
Another recommendation for a Virtuous sense rom. I'm running the 8.1 currently...it satisfies all the requirements on your list.
Thanks guys, going to look into the virtuous ROM. Would it be recommended to wipe my phone to go with the Virtuous ROM?
Are you using Rom Manager to do this?

Yes everytime you switch from one ROM to another you must do a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik) in order to avoid any issues.
Any of the custom ROMs should work fine on both the G2 and the DZ (unless the thread on the ROM specifically says otherwise), after all they are the same phone. The keyboard mapping is the only real different you'd notice, so this might need tweaking of the ROM doesn't automatically handle it.
As I understand it, apps that have been de-odexed, have effectively been put back in one piece so they can be more easily modified by the developer. Normally the apps are odexed, and have had some extra optimisation done to them which makes them hard to modify.
Zip-aligned is supposed to save RAM, I think ?
I for one am another upvote for Virtuous 8.1 Smooth as silk.
Rom manager will not work on my g2.I always get the red triangle. And have to pull the battery. How can I just start over.by the way I am rooted well I believe so.

I'd definitely recommend wiping. You can always back up your current ROM and everything else, so no worries.
Another +1 for Virtuous. Cyanogen was awesome and very fast, but Virtuous is as well. I can't get away from the social phonebooks either and the HTC Sense Facebook and Twitter integration is phenomenal. I thought I'd ditch it without looking back but I was sadly mistaken.
Virtuous wasn't slower as I expected either. It's very fast and very stable. I usually run around 1-1.2GHz with the conservative setting in SetCPU with only a couple profiles, mainly just one for things to cool down when the screen is locked. Works great and my battery is loving it too.
I've heard that none of the current ROMs support 4G. Is this true? ...and if so how much speed decrease do you guys notice?

When I got my phone, like many I'm sure, I used the HELL OUT OF IT!!
After tons of research I decided to Root and go with Fresh's Rom..
I love his Rom to be honest.. but I'm thinking after months now, I should try something new?
I have the same boring superman theme and background, (was cool for a while)
I use Launcher Pro and such.
So.. Should I try a new Rom guys? I know I will lose everything, all my information, which kinda sucks, but I think I'm willing to give it a go..
What Rom should I do? What's the most popular rom these days?
THANKS
Dude... I flash new (updates) ROMs almost daily while I experiment with ROMs, kernels, fonts and themes. I don't understand why people are so afraid of wiping their phones to default settings. Anything worth keeping is on your SD card, it is on mine. Apps can just downloaded again. Look on the ROM page of the Evo wiki and find a rom you think improves your phone or just try something for the hell of it.
Miui. Ive tried many many roms and is awesome. I love my phone again!

I change my rom so often I have a small collection of nandroid back-ups that I use to switch back and forth (nandroid = backs up your phone and makes a damn good rolodex of roms). I've used Myn, MikFroyo, Gingerbread, Fresh, MIUI and sometimes I'll just go back to the ol stock rom. Then I go theme hunting, font hunting, live wallpapers, fun programs and try out kernels. Which combos have the best performance, the best quadrant scores, which ones look the coolest. Granted, I've only had the phone for 3 weeks but...yknow... aww hell I think I'll go with some gingerbread today!

Same here. Keeps me busy. Pisses the wife of though. I just tell her "I'd rather mess with my phone, than listen/watch that crap you have on the TV." I'd rather shoot myself than be in the same room as Jersey Shore.
Use titanium backup and you won't lose all your apps. As far as roms go check out Myns or some cm7
try myn's rom with a gingerbread theme and a netarchy kernel. much better than fresh imo.

mikfroyo or myn for sense and miui for aosp since I've had better stability with it than cm 6.1.2
OK!! I guess Ill got with myn Rom tonight to check it out.. THANKS!!
haha i change roms 4 or 5 times a week. titanium backup is A BOSS!!!

I also like to try most every rom out there, from Cyanogen, and MIUI, to Sense. I trend to lean toward Sense roms because everything works.
I'm digging Caulkins EviO rom with themed launcher pro. Great speed, look, and battery life. Linpack and Quadrant scores are pretty high too if those numbers make you happy.
I constantly change roms. Between myns, calks, mikfroyo, and whatever else sounds interesting at the time. I have quite a few gigs of nandroid backups on my pc, just fly back and forth between em. I just can't stop changing roms, I like all of them. All the devs here are great and put out some awesome work. Flash away dude.

I'm the same way... You might want to try out MIUI. After installing it, it's like having a whole new phone again... the user experience is completely different than what's out there right now. However, I do wish they resolved the BT issue - it's the only thing keeping me from having it as my daily ROM.

I used to be kind of skittish about changing ROMs and such. When I first rooted I went with Myn's warm, and used only that for months. It was just the best out of all that I had seen. Great polish, fast, had everything I wanted. But like a lot of you I got bored after a while. Needed something different. Tried out evervolv (and king/dc13's variation of it) to see what the gingerbread was all about. It was freakishly fast (I hope the official 2.3 release is even faster!) and had great animations, transitions, etc. But the few bugs kept me from keeping it as a daily driver for more than a week. GPS almost never worked for me and wifi seemed to have a mind of its own. Went back to Warm for a while. Then tried MikFroyo v4.4 after seeing the explosion of popularity after he revamped the whole ROM. I have been using that ever since. It's got basically everything I loved about Warm but it's slightly faster, enough to notice, especially sending texts. I've been eying MIUI lately...thinking about trying that out soon. As for kernels...I've found non better than netarchy's. Currently using 4.3.1 and it's the most stable/fastest yet. Incredible battery life especially with the SBC mod.
Basically nandroid backups and titianium backup are your friends. I have a backup of Warm, Evervolv, and MikFroyo so I can switch back if I feel like it. Backing up and restoring apps with titanium is a breeze (I highly recommend the pro/donate version). I've got to the point where doing a full wipe does not bother me at all...I have all my settings memorized and I can have everything back to how it was before the wipe in no time.
I highly recommend some Warm two point two. Can't go wrong with that. I've been running it for about a month, and don't want to change.

I highly suggest you try Miui 1.21.2. The official release JUST came out late last night and it is pretty freaking epic. It's something completely different than what you are used to, I guarantee.
The stock launcher on it is like an android version of the iphones because there isn't a App drawer. It is extremely smooth, theres a theme manager built in so you can change themes on a whim, you can even edit your own.
If you don't want the "iphone" feel, although I must say it is much more epic because of window animation transitions and the addition of widgets and much more, try GO Launcher Ex which also just came out and seems to be on par if not better than adw or launcher pro...
I'm currently in the process of customizing each launcher to my liking (launcher pro, go launcher and the stock one that came with the rom) and I plan on using home switcher ALOT.
ANYHOOOO... If you want something new and even more epic than before, you won't go wrong with MIUI... I was holding off because of the lack of 4g but seeing that it's around the corner I decided to give it a go...
Since I am new to the MT4G and sense ROMs, I have a few questions.
What is the CPU freq most everyone is using for day to day. I have mine set at 1.4ghz as 1.7 seems too much.
I am running the latest Iced Glacier ROM. What was the bloatware removed? There is still a lot in this ROM I do not use. (like stocks, setup and myfaves) What is safe to remove?
This ROM seems huge to me.... its over 200mb! even the most bloated Nexus ROM I used barely reached 100mb.
Is there any home replacement that will allow the sense widgets? ADW EX will not. Seems that the widgets would be framework based and not launcher based.
Trackpad wake, is that a root feature or did the stock ROM allow that as well?
I literally had my phone for less than an hour before it was rooted, and that includes the 30 min drive from the UPS center. So the differences between the stock software and the modified are lost on me.
Any tips to working with sense better? It has a lot of nice convenience and flash compared to vanilla android. I figured if I am going to use a sense ROM may as well use it to its potential. If I don't I may as well go with CyanogenMOD. (CM7 on the nexus was nice btw, I think I liked the new stock android keyboard the best of all I have used including swype)
Any custom kernels that work better than the one in Iced Glacier? (give reasons why) I need good battery life, so anything reasonable that helps is great. I am not on it constantly and eating battery, but signal is spotty at work; who knew carbon fiber was such a good RF blocker...
I think that is all for now... I am off to bed. 12 hour work days 7 days a week can get to you. (another reason I'm asking questions outright rather than extensive searching on the forum)
Anybody?...
For one, the rom is so big because it's a sense rom. Track pad wake works out the gate. Theres no home replacement that you can use sense widgets with

Depends on your personal hardware. I run mine at 1.8 on the smaetass kernel with no problems, but some can't do that.
I am running the latest Iced Glacier ROM. What was the bloatware removed? There is still a lot in this ROM I do not use. (like stocks, setup and myfaves) What is safe to remove?
Stocks (and widget), myfaves (and Widgets), twitter widget, flicker, and a few others.
This ROM seems huge to me.... its over 200mb! even the most bloated Nexus ROM I used barely reached 100mb.
It is huge compared to an aosp rom like was on the Nexus, but that's because of all the stuff added with HTC sense.
Is there any home replacement that will allow the sense widgets? ADW EX will not. Seems that the widgets would be framework based and not launcher based.
No, sadly there isn't. The sense Widgets are so deeply integrated with the rest of the launcher that such is not possible. However, it is possible to find some Widgets that do similar things.
Trackpad wake, is that a root feature or did the stock ROM allow that as well?
That was on stock as well, and most custom roms will incorporate this highly popular feature.
I literally had my phone for less than an hour before it was rooted, and that includes the 30 min drive from the UPS center. So the differences between the stock software and the modified are lost on me.

Well, the best thing I can say on this is to not expect it to be like aosp. That's the point of being sense, its unique in its look. It just wont always be the fastest on the block.
Any custom kernels that work better than the one in Iced Glacier? (give reasons why) I need good battery life, so anything reasonable that helps is great. I am not on it constantly and eating battery, but signal is spotty at work; who knew carbon fiber was such a good RF blocker...
Not really sure how to answer this question, really. Grankin has a few good kernels for iced glacier that can bring the speed up to 1.7 Guzman, and the smartass governor built into dumfuq's kernel (built for cm, but has since been modded to be compatible with sense roms like iced) enables it to get better speed and battery life.

EDIT: also, I dont think I mentioned this previously, but the default setup for the cm6 kernel will break wi-fi on sense ROMs, so be sure to set up the wi-fi fix that he added today.
I am currently on ice glacier also but I really like eVil's Desire ROMs. there's a Z and HD flavor. they are more full on stock sense experience than iced which is a more/less clone of espresso.
I personally prefer the stock sense to espresso...there's more HTC Widgets and some other cool stuff. I also really like the trackpad unlock in addition to wake which is built in on those as well. the only thing I REALLY miss on those ROMs is the espresso dialer which has the built in VIP calls (allows a VIP contact to ring even with ringer / sound off).
I haven't tried gorillas DHD sense port yet but prob will in a couple days.
and before you ask - the difference between the Z and HD ROMs is Z has a landscape rotating home screen and larger fonts by default and HD doesnt have the homescreen rotation and has a smaller font. they're about identical as far as I can tell aside from that. I had no real problems on 0.2.x versions of Z and HD but eVil just released 0.3 and it seems a couple ppl are complaining of a quirk here and there..btw both of those eVil ROMs have a 1.49ghz kernel with built in smartass scaling which I really like.
I'm currently oc'ed to 1.2 max on iced 1.1.6 to try and maximize battery.

Okay, so I rooted my phone and updated to the latest SprintLovers ROM. It's nice but, I would like a nice non-senseui ROM. Either that, or a FAST senseui ROM. I think it just slows down my phone. I purchased ADW Launcher-EX for my rooted Nook and would like to find a ROM that I could possibly use that on. The best solution would be a ROM that maybe has sense but allows it to be deselected. With most sense based ROMs, sense stays running in the background even if you use something else.
Also, I would like to try overclocking my phone. I see some of the kernels in the wiki but, how so I flash? I currently use AR recovery but, I would prefer to use Clockworks for Rom Manager (since it is required). I purchased the license for Rom Manager but, it just errors.
Also, what are other good tools to use. I purchased SetCPU and ROM Manager. Are there other tools for rooted phones that are as important as those two?
Please forgive the noob style questions. I finally decided to root my phone even though I got it the day they were released. I am trying to get a little more life out of it, while I wait for Sprint to releaser the "next best thing".
IMHO CM7 nighties is by far the best no sense rom

It requires AOSP kernels, like any AOSP ROM. The one that it comes with is pretty damn good though, I have found no reason to use any other one. It's stable, I have had ZERO reboots, and fast as hell. 1700+ quadrant scores with no overclocking.

I tried it. My quadrant score was only 1100 with it. I noticed that the kernel was overclocked in it but, setcpu was set to 1Ghz from my titanium backup. Maybe that's why. I didn't like the iPhone look-and-feel of it though. I went to warm twopoint and like it. I may play around with this one for a while.
Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the ROMs available for the MT4G?
I have been reading forum after forum and blog after blog, but most are so technical I'm just not getting the basic idea of what each ROM has to offer.
I see CM7 based ones and MIUI based ones, Sense based ones and Iced Glacier and it is all very confusing. I really just want to know a bottom line of what comes in it and what it looks like. How will it be different then the stock ROM in my phone now?
I don't have the know-how and experience of a developer but I'm not computer illiterate either.
I have however rooted my phone for the first time just a few days ago and want to do it right and make sure I am getting what I am looking for without losing anything in the process. Which is basically, no more TMo bloatware, faster CPU, longer battery life, customizable fonts, colors, sounds, etc and the ability to take screen shots.
I don't use the Sense and basic apps that came on the phone, I have LauncherPro and use Folder Organizer for my home screens, Dolphin HD for browsing, SwiftKey X as a keyboard, Handcent for SMS, Gmail for email, Astro for files, Doubletwist for media and am in the process of looking for a replacement for the Gallery. And I want to keep all of my customizations in those as well if possible.
This can all be so overwhelming because there is just sooo much info out there on the subject and so many different opinions and ways to do things. So any help or advice that can make the 'choosing a ROM' process a little easier will be so greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
Thanks!
Jen
PS
Oh and let's not forget that apparently some ROMs then seem to have their own little differences between Stable, Experimental and Nightly...??? Someone please simplify for me! This root & rom noob greatly appreciates your patience and help.
IMO you should just go on a flashing spree and see which ones you like best, AOSP roms will probably have the best battery life vs sense based roms by a few hours.
But for me I like sense's integrated interface and the camera/gallery. I take a lot of pictures and the camera that comes with virtuous unity is awesome + the gallery that comes with it with it's effects (i know there are apps that do that too but the effects done by this gallery is pretty amazing)
Anyways if you're flashing a new rom you will have to redo your customization. Backup your apps using titanium backup or mybackup root or pro. (mybackup seems to be easiest to restore apps but if using titanium restore APP only because restoring data will sometimes cause problems)
Every ROM is better than stock.
Now the Roms:
Sense rom: Try Virtuous Unity first, it's amazing and my daily driver if you can get version 1.29 it seems to be more stable, that's what i'm on.
1.31 supposedly has draining issues for a few.
Looks: it's based off sensation, it's actually really amazing.
Miui rom: I haven't try this YET.. but if you like the iphone UI try this out
CM7/AOSP: I say start out with Royalginger, you can't go wrong with it, it's the rom that got me into this flashing craze in the first place. Think of it as CM7 supercharged.
i'm actually gonna try faux aosp next.
Looks:think smooth and quick
iced glaciers: no comment i think they're based off froyo? not sure.
There are also those gingerbread leaked roms. They're basically the new gingerbread 2.3.4 OS for mytouch4g with special modifications.
Note you should let the rom settle in a couple days to determine the battery usage of it.
If you're planning to flash CM7 you should just stick with the stable ones as you're new to this. think experimental builds as Beta and nightlies are alpha.
I switch around royalginger and virtuous unity can't go wrong with those. I just love virtuous unity camera and gallery.
every app you're using can be installed in any of the roms so don't worry about that. They'll look the same on each rom. You can make it look like what you're using now too plus it'll run quicker and smoother... and longer.
I suggest trying out Opera browser vs Dolphin, i was using dolphin but found that opera is much smoother. except i do like some of dolphin's feature.
no comments on keyboards because i only use swype 3.7 (it's swype + touch input keyboards together!)
I started out using handcent but found gosms quicker
quickpic and 3dgallery are popular choices.
oh when using each rom remember to check the APN in setting>wireless>mobile networks> access point names and see if it's on tmobile and not on anything else. I actually suggest deleting any other listed APNs
happy flashing!
That's some great info, Teo, and exactly the kind of input I'm looking for. Thanks!

You should look at some youtube videos. That should give you a clear idea of what each ROM has to offer.

Good idea, Mackster. I'll do that. Thanks!
I have been running miui and virtuous unity for some time now. While sense does have some nice eye candy, you cant go wrong with the kind of battery life and speed you can get aosp. The fastest rom i have tried to date is miui, I have not gotten higher quadrant scores on any other rom and i have tried them all. With the new phone i also recommend that you get familiar with radios and kernels too. Radios can make a big difference with battery life, cell reception and data speeds. Try out the panache radio, it seems to work best for me.
Check out the ROMs listed in the Resource bible. They are divided by android version and subdivided by base (aosp, sense, and miui.)
I dont have a side by side comparison since there are over 50 ROMS listed however I did start a POLL this month in the Resource Bible so you can view the results and see what ROMs others prefer.
Double post....
Thank you, junkie. I will check out both of those and will definitely start researching radios.
Thanks, Halfcalf... I will check out the bible and Great idea with the poll! It will be a big help seeing which are the more popular ones to help narrow it down. I definitely don't want to flash 50 different roms trying to decide. Lol
forgot to mention i think miui, latest cm7 nighly, virtuous unity all have a native screenshot thing. royalginger doesn't. not sure about faux

Faux 1.29 doesn't have a native screenshot. It does support the market ones fine though. Also you can get some ridiculous speed and battery life on that ROM with well-thought SetCpu profiles.
