I have came to a conclusion that my phone is defective with heating issues and the battery going extremly fast. I already rooted and did recovery. Will they refuse to take the phone back even though its rooted??? I'm running the stock rom...
Also is there a way to reverse the root and recovery???
BTW I'm exchanging it for another shift. I love this phone to much to get a diffrent one

Just exchange it, I doubt they are going to check for root unless you give them a reason to example. Custom boot animation, outrageous theme ect. As long as it looks like sense most reps aren't the wiser. I know because I work at a Sprint Corporate store.

Ok THIS is cool (if it works)
http://www.unrevoked.com/
The code from it is what Regaw used in his thread on how to root 2.1. I just downloaded and it is an apk. I'm still rooted from 1.5 but it appears you can download from your phone and run the app and then you have root.

i dont know if it works for hero users, but ive read quite a few success stories over at the evo forums.
I had a sneaking suspicion that the key to rooting the Hero was going to be tied to the Evo. The Evo gets rooted soon after Google I/O and they held the code back to get it done until evo release day, which makes sense. I'm quite happy with how things are looking. When I eventually scrape the pennies together to get the Evo I'll be able to root it easily.
That's going to be a lot of pennies. I told one of the guys from work I was getting the Evo and he was like "son of a b!tch" I can't afford one right now, but the look on his face was funny.

I can get one at new subscriber rates in 11 months. I'm hoping that in 6 months the Evo is old and busted and there will people dumping it for brand new hotness. What I'd really like is an Evo specced phone without 4G or it's upcharge.

Plus 1 on that! I'm not unhappy with my Hero though. I AM sort of regretting getting the Hero, because now I want the cool new phones! Actually, I'll blame it on the Instinct and being on the everything family plan, which give me premier account status, where I get the full upgrade every year...

Maybe Regaw will chime in on this and tell us what's going on with it, and if someone just took his work and turned it into an app.
Confirmed
I confirm this 1 click root does work on the Hero. Love this method. Great work from the developers.

if you read his rooting guide, you will see that they collaborated.
did it root with 2.1, or with 2.1+the ota update that was recently released?
instructions
I went to the web address....there are no instructions on how to use it. Do you download to your phone or to your computer?

I too did this, but now my Hero won't update the weather and I can't access the market...something about a data connection error.
Anyone else experiencing this?
oops, make that "a network error has occurred"
unrEVOked is a one-click-root tool by mmastrac who also got a lot of help from the likes of toastcfh, maejrep, and some other guys.
The exploit behind the tool is the exact same one used in Regawmod's root for 2.1, just the boot.img was patched to play nicely with our phones.
Then again, I don't see why this is in the development section.
so.. lol im not to new to this but is this flashing a recovery? or just gaining root and adding su ect ect.
well i will find out in a min either way lol
edit:
worked perfectly, no problems here.
Is there any chance this has messed with my Hero? I can't get online and weather won't display or connect. I have done multiple soft resets. Is there something I am forgetting to do? I downloaded and ran the unrevoked apk.
try loading a custom rom.
or call customer service, Sprint shut off my data for now reason last week and couldnt tell me how it happend.
does the phone make calls? sms? mms?
Well, I did another soft reset, but this time pulled the battery and waited several minutes. The network access came back, weather started working again, etc. So then I downloaded/installed wireless tether and started to play with that but then the network access went down again. I can't figure out if its Sprint getting screwy or this phone
My phone is rooted and I have been having issues with roms. Anyone else having problems?
This is a brand new replacement phone and I am considering taking it back. To get another one.
Thoughts suggestions? Anyone else having similar issues?
Issues:
Keyboard vibration feedback works sometimes. Mostly doesn't.
When rebooting from recovery using the reboot command it hangs on the white screen sometimes. Have to yank the battery and then power it up again.
General instability in the roms I have flashed. Reboots, force closes, and CPU running full steam ahead on some of them. Also flashing some like ripride on fresh 3.4 just results in boot loops.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You may want to flash airbourne 3.4 with stock kernel I have not had those issues with that combo
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Airborne ? I suppose that is a Rom? I may go back to the stock RUU and return the the phone. Why should I have to put up with a defect? I am running OMJ latest Rom with riptide9 v11. It does have some stuff I don't want on there but it is stable.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yea it is a rom from virus I dont have anythose defects it is something to do with hardware 04 but stock htc kernels usually fix all those issue
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Really the big issue is the feed back for the keyboard. It doesn't work most of the time. I haven't had an EVO for almost 3 weeks before getting this one, 20 days go black tie insurance, but I definitely can tell a difference. I am flashing the RUU here in like 5 mins and then I should be able to tell. Oh were you meaning the stock kernel or completely stock?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If you got it back from Best Buy broken, then why the heck aren't you complaining up a storm and making them FIX it? Honestly, I will never understand why people use BB's crap insurance over Sprint's TEP.
I no longer have that insurance. I do have a brand new phone with a flaw from best buy. If you get a brand new phone you can opt into getting Sprint to cover it.
You don't understand why? Because Best Buy is misleading and I came from ATT who did not offer anything like Sprint does. As soon as I walked into the sprint store to ask about my old phone I knew I made a mistake in my choice. When I heard an employee telling someone they replaced their screen. I have never seen Sprint advertise this kind of service. I thought it was something of the past and didn't realize Sprint had repair centers and to the extent the repairs they would conduct.
I went to best buy and got turned away. They told me to come tomorrow when their manager is there. In fact I had to pay extra tax to get my replacement which was complete bs. I called Sprint and I spoke to one of there management guys. He told me to go to best buy and if they would not give me a new phone to call them without leaving the store.

Went to best buy again today. Got turned away again. Literally was told that they did me a favor replacing the phone in the first place.
Called the store and spike to the gm. He was pretty understanding and hooked ne up. Now I have a phone that works.

I agree, always deal with sprint for repairs. Stock kernel 11 or above is better for all around functions (camera, 4g) ziggy kernels are best performance. Just trial and error with diff rom/kernel combo is the best advice. till you find the one that works best for you

Hello!
Just got my Epic 4G a few days ago and I'm already itching to root it, but I'm paranoid about the warranty. Sprint rep told me that they were anal about it and it would void it.
I used to have a Nexus One with T-Mobile and I was flashing new ROMs and kernels almost every day. I've always been a 'nerd' so I know what it all means and how to do it... but there's that lingering warranty in my mind. I was worried about it at first on my Nexus One, but eventually rooted and unlocked the bootloader even though I knew it meant the warranty went byebye.
Can someone offer me some piece of mind? Are these things easy to un-root? Is there any way that a Sprint tech could find out if it was ever rooted should I ever need to take advantage of the warranty?
I'll be honest with you, I'm not sure if it's worth it. I am not going to flash custom ROMs (yes, I miss FroYo, but I'm content)... the only reason I'm interested in rooting is for things like AdFree, Juice Defender, and removing stock apps.
Thoughts?
99% of Sprint reps not only could never tell your phones been rooted without seeing a different boot screen, but don't even know what root is.

Nothing to worry about... If you have to take your phone back to the store just Odin back to stock and problem solve. Everything is on the Wiki.

exactly! I took my epic in back in November to complain about battery management issue I was having and to swap out for a new one. I told the rep what a bummer it was that I had to re-install all my apps and he said
"naw man, you can just save everything on your sd card no problem. that's what its there for!"
to which I replied, "only on froyo, and only if you install the leaked dk28 build"
rep:
Yeah they don't even know.if a phone is rooted or not. Besides just like people aid previously just use Odin and it.flashes it.back to stock. Its a lifesaver sometimes.

Some older phones used to have flash counters, and I don't know if the epic has one. Typically they are buried deep in inaccessible areas and I doubt that any sprint store would have the wherewithal to get at it. I'm sure that Samsung could probably tell, but when Sprint sends them back they just throw them in a big box. The point of accountability is at the store where you exchange for another one. So either odin back to stock or short out the hardware and sprint will be none the wiser.

Yeah, there is actually a code that you can bring up to see if the phone is a refurb'd or not. I did that on mine and it was definately new.
Thanks for all the replies.
Rooted today using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808103

I did too and with the code check it shows new but hey do you believe that I don't cuz if we can make the phone looks unrooted with Odin they can make their own phone to appear as brand new.

I accidentally updated to the 2.3 update from sprint, which naturally killed root and battery life of my shift, and so now I'm wondering if there is a way to ruu back to 2.2 so I can root and save some juice, or am I just S.O.L. until devs figure something else out?
This has been answered in several different threads... As of right now there is no way to return to 2.2. Until another root method is found, your pretty much stuck with what you have.

Wow fml, I should have known better. Thanks for the heads up though. This is going to be a long edc.
I'm in the same boat. If there isn't a solution found within a week or so, I'm going to reactivate my Palm Pre and use it until the fix is found. I NEED to have wifi tethering and the Pre was really easy to get it working on. FML
i just got off phone from sprint for my bill but the girl said she soo busy resting phone back to stock alot of people dont like update so call them maybe a way they can roll it back
I'm certainly going to call and see if they can...

Yeah, make sure you let us know. I updated my wife's phone the other day .I want to take it back to 2.2 so I can root it if need be.
Phones speaker, yet again, went out.
Took phone to best buy, rooted with a custom rom on it. Think it was Fresh 4.2 or something I don't remember tbh.
Get phone back and it's all manufactured and has latest update.
From what I've read, no root for it yet.
What do?
Well, if we can get HTC to roll another small update out for us for the bad timezone and other small bugs... maybe they'll unlock the boot loader for us. :-D Send HTC saying your timezone is messed up. :-D

If it happens again, just buy a new speaker off eBay. They're really easy to swap out and cheap as hell. Just look on you tube for a walk-through.
not terribly worried about it. i plan on switching to the BB Bold 9930 when it comes out to Sprint in a couple months.
I got my Evo4g, because my previous job had hours upon hours of down time. So SNESoid and many other games filled that void and made my work day enjoyable. New job...can't even take my phone into the building, at all =( So all I need my phone now is just text and email. I could probably just get a dumb flip phone really. But I couldn't do that after having a smartphone for a few years now.

Is it your same phone? Check your bootloader to see if it is still s-off. You may get lucky and still be able to install a custom recovery.

ha, not sure why I didn't think of that.
i jsut assumed it was a new phone, sticker under battery now says 'remanufactured' and the screen doesnt have the scratch it had before and the camera lens is brand new looking.
