Question about the hardware keys and honeycomb - Galaxy Tab General

I know Honeycomb for the Galaxy Tab has been talked about a lot, but I actually was wondering something:
Does anyone know if their will be a way to disable the hardware keys since from the demo Honeycomb will have its own on screen hardware keys?

There's a button remapper app on the market, maybe you can assign "no action " to the buttons. I haven't used the app though... just a thought.
Then again, I've used the archos 70 and having less hardware buttons makes me feel insecure... but if they have zero lag and lock ups, on-screen buttons seem ok

Surely the Xoom has no hardware buttons at all does it?

correct, Xoom has no hardware buttons but Galaxy Tab does. And because Galaxy Tab does and Xoom doesnt have hardware keys we should in theory be able to turn off the annoying hardware keys for the gTab so we can use only the on screen ones.

Back button

Guys is there any way of having a back button on the screen instead of always using the one on the actual phone?, a friend of mine has a tablet with gingerbread and he has a back button at the top of the screen by the time and battery!

You could use Button Saviour out something similar... But tablets have those buttons because of their big screens. In small screens, software buttons are kind of a waste IMO .
You'd better tell google then as ICS is designed not to use hard buttons.

Oh, so the current flagship iphone and windows phone don't have any dedicated navigation buttons at all, and the current nexus phone wasn't the first touch only phone to market? my mistake.

Is the Galaxy Nexus screen "small"?

Home button

Does anyone else dislike the home button? I really find this a step backwards.

Nope! I like the physical home button.

Same here. I was a little worried about it before my phone was delivered because of what one of the reviews I read had to say about it, but I am pleased with it.

If you had a i9100 or a i9000 you are used to it. Its nice double clicking it brings out s voice. Then double clicking menus opens search.

I like it... Coming from the Epic, its taking a bit to get use to it. The simple touch to get home was nice too. I want my Camera button back. lol and Keyboard.

I also like the Home button. I like holding it down to get the task manager with whatever is running. I can easily remove any apps by swiping them off to the side. (for those few who didn't know)
But, you don't need a physical button to get the camera going. It takes a bit of practice but here's the trick - starting from the locked screen (visible) - with your thumb in the middle of the screen hold the phone in the portrait position then rotate to horizontal. The camera should pop up instantly.
it does work.
Coming from the S2 it takes some getting used to but its growing on me.

Has anyone noticed a definite lag when you press the home button before it returns to home screen? I disabled double click to open S-voice and it seems to have become slightly faster, but you can still notice a lag before the home screen shows up.
Coming from the Galaxy Nexus it was s ***** at first but I have grown used to it though but......soft keys>>>>> hard keys

Well, I guess I need to keep giving it a chance. I'm just used to having to barely press it. With the case on it seems harder to get to.

Disable S-Voice's double-tap-home shortcut in the S-Voice settings. It's instant after that. You won't be able to launch S-Voice by double tapping home though.
Personally I would prefer more screen real estate and have the digital soft keys like on the Galaxy Nexus. by doing this they could have either provided more screen or made the overall size of the phone slightly shorter.
It's my only complaint. After having a Transformer Prime and getting used to a capacitive home button, it really is a hassle.
Coming from the Samsung vibrant, I didn't like the idea of it at first because I was use to the soft keys and the s3's physical home button reminded me of the vibrant's international version (I9000).
But now that I actually have the phone, I love it. Just takes some time to get use to, depending on your preference or your previous phone.

Coming from the Evo 3D, it's definitely annoying but I'm getting used to it. Honestly, I wish they removed capacitive buttons, made the screen bigger and went for software buttons like the Galaxy nexus. That way it's much more customizable and gives you extra screen space when you dont use the bottom buttons.
Annoyed
It is a shame. My finger is tired!
Captivate had 4 capacitive buttons.
Considering how good and responsive capacitive buttons got on SGS3 - it is hard to justify physical home button, and it can break too. Suxxxx.
I dont mind it at all
I like the home button. I just hope it holds up for 2years.

Love the Home button. Coming from an iPhone 4S I am used to the physical button. The biggest plus for me is waking the phone up. I find it very awkward to press the side power button to do that instead of quickly locate the physical button right on the face of the device. Also the double tap and single tap and hold works good.

Not sure about getting the buttons to work since that probably requires some sort of proprietary drivers, but flash any rom that supports extended desktop (like Paranoid Android), and you can hide the onscreen buttons and swipe a screen hotspot to bring them up.

It might be best to ask this in the Optimus G thread as there is probably already an answer for this pertaining to the capacitive buttons.

Make home button into a camera button?

Hi! Im getting my galaxy s4 this week. Im a fan of on screen buttons. I know there are ways to disable the buttons and enable on screen controls. But I also love having a camera button and I think that the home button would be perfect for that. Is this possible? Thank you very much in advance for any answers/help.

How would you then leave the app?
Far better solution would be to have volume key or power key the camera button.

Screen Lock using Power button

Hi all,
first post here.
I recently purchased the Galaxy S8 - love it!
A friend told me that using the power button regularly will damage the button. Is this true?
the friend also recommended using a Screen Lock/ Off app to use this (similar to the iOS quick ball)
Any thoughts?
How would regular use damage it? If you're skeptical, use the fingerprint unlock feature.

Thanks for the reply. Exactly my point. Samsung would make these buttons with a very good usability time span right?

And to lock? the power button?
It's a little finicky compared to the iPhones... The buttons are bigger and more clicky on the iPhones. Can't really fault the galaxy though since that edge screen use up half of the side bezel.
The power button is there for a reason. Use it.
Don't be silly, no it won't break...
Thanks all for the help

30 seconds for timeout is the setting I use....no power button push to lock required!

or just search and install Softkey Edge from Galaxy App and use it from edge side.
