So, I used to run WinMo way back when, and I'm familiar with flashing, HardSPL, blah blah blah, whatevs. I haven't done the rooting process yet on my phone because I'm finding it hard to find a few key things that I need.
-What is the effect on my phone when I root, in regards to data? Do I need to backup? If so, can I backup on my SD card or is everything wiped? What program could I use to backup?
-Are there any crazy little tweaks or tips that anyone has to help guard against a brick?
-I've read the pros and cons list, but can I get more details from someone? Can this help with battery life, allow me to flash my radio, increase general connectivity, etc.
All help would be greatly appreciated, and I'll plan on doing a donation today. I've just been out of the loop (running WinMo 6.5 style out of the loop:/) so some advice to a rook would be great. My goal is to get out of school and come home and root and fiddle with things with little to no problems. Thanks a ton everyone.

The process of actually rooting doesn't mess with any of your stuff.
I use Titanium Backup to restore apps after flashing roms.
In general, most of this stuff COULD help your battery life, here there are Devs that will help - with sprint you get their tech support.
Well, I DL'ed TB and it says that I have to root first? Am I missing something here? Is it ok to root or will it delete all of my apps and what not? I mean, if it does, it isn't really that big of a deal, considering I can just download them again, I'm just looking for input.

I'm pretty new, too, but I think I can answer your questions. Rooting (at least with the One Click Method I used on my Epic) doesn't destroy any data/apps on your phone. It simply gives your user root access to the underlying OS. Once that is achieved, you can modify things and tweak things. Titanium Backup will let you backup all system files and data, but only AFTER rooting.
This is not a ROM flash or anything like that from the WinMo days. I haven't gotten that far on Android, so I'm not sure what the flashing options are yet, but rooting is harmless on its own. It will let you royally screw things up though, so once it is done, be careful what you do.
Well, I tried to do a few things like listed in the One-Click root thread, but I guess I'm just not getting it. Now that I know the effects of the root, I'd like to be able to actually do it, but I don't have enough details. I haven't ever rooted before, and I'm finding it confusing. What was listed in the one-click thread wasn't specific enough for me, I don't know if I need to run from SD card, what the ADB thing is, nothing. I was a WinMo master and I'm finally coming to Android which is literally worlds away from my comfortable norm.
what os are you running? the one click comes with everything you need. theres an osx version the windows version that noobnl updates and the linux version i maintain

I wouldn't exactly call root harmless..in itself it is ok..but if you give root access to a program that program has FULL access to your system..aka anything inputed on your phone or stored on your phone can be accessed by the program with root access. Though generally its not a problem..just careful which programs you allow to use root access.
Also, at what point are you getting stuck? did you install the drivers? are you getting any sort of errors or etc?
There is also some good reading over at SDX Developers.
I have hacked and rooted before, WinMo, Palm, HTC Hero, but this one was tough. It basically took me two days off and on, but it worked - finally.
Downloading drivers is a b--h, they are finicky and I needed all of them, kept
hanging on 2. They are slow, and kept looking for sources.
Search here, there is good info, then look there (above) I used OneClickExploit 2.2.4 which finally worked. It had some of the same files
in other methods, but this one worked.
I'm not changing roms, did on Hero to 2.2 because they weren't getting upgrade but I'm just going to hang and wait for Froyo.
Good luck

Download and unzip the one-click archive in to a folder. Double-click the run.bat. I had some problems where it would start and then hang. I often had to kill it and rerun the batch file. Sometimes I had to end task on the adb.exe process. Eventually after rebooting the phone, etc, I was able to get it to work. Not sure what the exact problem was. I think part of it was connectivity to the phone via usb. Connect through a port on your computer, not a hub.
Also, the batch file is just a bunch of commands. You can open a command line in the folder where the batch file is and run each line in the batch file individually from the command line. That will give you some idea of what is happening and where it might be failing.
Like I said, I had to stop and restart a bunch of time before it finally got through to the end of the batch file correctly. When it did, it was fast. Not sure what was happening.

When I try to install the drivers I get this message:
"The MSS InstallWizard was not Completed for SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones V1.3.450.0
The MSS InstallWizard was not successfully installed SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones V1.3.450.0. Click Finish to exit the wizard.
And I'm basically stuck there. I've searched around and can't find any drivers that will work. Like I said, I'm on 64-bit Windows 7 with a clean OS and no previous negative install history. Not sure what the issue could be?
Found the drivers and everything that I needed and I'm rooted, but now I have one more question. I don't plan on flashing any roms, I'm alright with the stock rom, at least for now. I wanted to know what rooting will do in regards to over the air updates on my phone. Will I be able to OTA to FroYo when released? Any info would be great guys, thanks.
where did you find the drivers? I am having the exact same problem that you had where the installwizard cannot download finish installing the drivers for whatever reason
Hello...
I adress everyone who wasn't able to unlock the device using ChevronWP7 due to "uh oh"-
I myself spend the "whole" weekend posting in every forum in the XDA fora - there are a couple... Many users I've encountered with who haven't been and still aren't able to unlock. There are a couple of possible solutions posted here. None of them worked. ´They didn't work for me either. That is why I open this thread. Those among you who under no means can unlock using Chevron are supposed to HARDRESET the phone.
i.e.: SETTINGS -> ABOUT -> RESET PHONE
I just did it a couple of seconds ago... AND IT WORKED... I DID REALLY WORK... THE WHOLE WEEKEND!!! I ALMOST FLIPPED OUT!!!
1. HARDRESET your device!!!
2. Follow the known instructions regarding the unlocking-procedure! STEP BY STEP

how do you soft reset ?
Go to settings and than to "about"... There you'll find the option to soft rest.
I'll give it a go as soon as I can! I've tried time issues, registry, airplane mode, disabling firewall and I still get the "uh oh" issues. I've almost spent most of my weekend with this issue, it's so frustrating . I'll report back and pray it works!
Now there is an "Error Report" whenever I try to unlock it.
Ok, Sir thanks, haven't try this yet, almost 5 days no luck. I save all possible procedure in the whole threads and give a try soon and i hope it will work with my SP3.
thanks

Man, I don't know what I did but I didn't have any issues at all. I just downloaded everything from every link in the WP7 rom/instructions I was supposed to, ran it all (when indicated) as administrator (in x64 W7) and no connection issues. Need to be more specific. Most homebrew is here (see Development/Software threads)
Also see the post in my sig for more details if you don't know where to start.

Sorry, i'll try to be more specific. I previously owned a HD7 but i change it for a Focus, 'cause i wanst gettin' access to the 3g network on my country out of it. So now i got the Focus and i was tryin' to unlockin' it, what i did, usin' the WindowBreakMe method and also i installed magdlr on the phone. I was looking for sideload apps to try on my phone, thats what i meant in first place, thanks to the post on your sig and endlessly searching i've found Bazaar and i've installed it on my phone, but now when i download any app from Bazaar, it gives me an error, that go as follows "Bazaar can't install applications on your device. It seems that is not fully unlocked. To deploy applications you should download Bazaar for PC. Read more at www.WP-Bazaaar.com".
Im sure my device is fully unlocked, i've installed Samsung Root Tools and DiagProvXML and enabled internet sharing and the 3g switch, and many more. Do you think my device relocked itself even i got the checkmark "Prevent Device Relocking" checked at Samsung Tools. Help, please.

Specific enough, I'd say
If you've already deployed WP7 Root Tools and Samsung Tools, you can always re-run the unlock sequence (in Root Tools first and then ST). Just to keep in mind Do not remove these 2 apps from the phone to test sideloading, once unlocked!
I'm not familiar with Bazaar but it seems you're missing a PC component used in the deployment process?
As for deploying, choose a XAP from the development forum and try to deploy it. If you can, it means you're unlocked (evidently).
If you can't deploy, try WINCO's XAP Assistant.
Let us know how it goes.
Hello all. I am very sorry to bother you all but I have been trying to upgrade my phone for the last 4 months and have almost given up. I saw the film about noods and really left it to the last resort! have an OMNIA 7 on:
7.10.7740.16 trying to go to 8107 for now but would like to go to windows 7.8 if possible
Fimware: 2424.11.112
Boot loader 6.4.09
I tired Zune: got error 80180008
Asked Microsoft: no help
Read forums and tried cab sender to send 8107 (+ languages) by Heathcliff: got same error but now know a bit more helphowto.cab.pkr ERROR CODE: 0x80180008 invalid signature ) (. (thanks Heathcliff!)
Tried sending firmaware: worked!
Tried sending just language packs (got 6 on my phone) only partial loaded to 7.10.8099
I Read more on forum: tried sending certificates to phone by e-mail. Tried installing various certificates on computer. Tried sending a previous help how to cab (from previous O.S. cab via e-mail to phone (thought it might be missing). Tried partial unlock but, as expected, did nothing.
After reading more on this site, I have seen that the certificates have expired on the CAB files (downloaded from "force ugrade") and so guess it has nothing to do with phone or windows (tried windows xp, vista and 7 ultimate). Asking for a new cert. seems like playing tomb raider to me.

Phone works OK except for key board drop so it is not the end of the world I guess. As a last chance I would be to try seven eighter. I have seen that some people even stuck on 7720 have been able to upgrade. However, In one thread you said we can’t roll back. Another one you said it SHOULD be possible to burn a back up back to the phone.
I have seen other questions on ths and other forums about error 8018008 but I have not found an answer that helps.
I Know it is my problem but if someone could find the time to help to answer these questions:
1. to burn a back up back to the phone, will cab sender work ? I have read that zune does not.is there another tool? The tool heathcliff mentioned, does not work with the latest version zune.
2. I have seen other people on 7720 been able to go to 7.8 with seven eighter but I have seen they have had someproblems (I think mainly due to wrong language pack selection issues)-. Do you think it would work for me even if I get this error? If there was not a problem of rolling back I wold gve it a go.
3. Is there something else I can do (except buy a new phone)
Thanks and sorry if this is in the wrong place or I have broken any rules un- intentionally !

Thanks I will read carefully and let you know. However, If I understand correctly though, the Magldr software unlocks my phone so I can load the immage ROM?
The only other doubt I have is about the memory on my phone. the Samsung site says nothing but an test report I found in WINDOSTECA says it should have 576mb RAM and 512MB ROM. Any one know if it is valid and if it is enough?......also where is the thanks button?
thanks again Misterxp
Yes Magldr unlocks your phone. Samsung omnia 7 as 512Mo of RAM and 8Go of memory, that's enough to install a custom rom.
512MB ROM is the size of the Rom (thus the system). This size can vary depending on the rom.
Thanks Button => http://i70.servimg.com/u/f70/17/66/30/68/captur14.png
problem solved
yippeeeeee
I solved the problem!
I decided that if flashing a custom ROM would solve it then so would flashing the official ROM. Hence I read all I could about official Samsung ROMS, chose the one which was not so old "I8700XXKC1_Many_PROVIDERS_NODO (7.10.7390), Chose the CSC for Italy because I live in Italy and then woke up one morning and went for it.
I followed all the instructions to the letter but had read them 100 times before! I formated the phone holding the Power + Volume DOWN + Camera buttons, followed the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973420 by Heathcliff and then, after all was done (went very smoothly, I connected to Zune and went all the way to 7.8. I had to cancel the update a couple of times because zune blocked but all went well in the end.
In between updates, I changed the names of the back up folder, so that zune created another in case I had to go back. I made this a habit in the past and meant I was sure I Always had a back up. (sometimes zune will cancel a backup if the process does not go correctly and, if you don't save back ups you end up with no back up!). When I finally got to 7.8 I used CAB SENDER to send an old CAB which I knew could not be installed and in that way I got a back up of my final version with all my apps installed. I did this because, once there are no more updates, zune does not install anything and so does not make a back up either. It is the easest way I have found but there may be another, I tried the various back up programmes but could never get them to work. I don't think my way does any harm to the phone but some one else more expert than me might know. The main thing I learnt is how important it is to have a back up and save the back up. It saved me a few times. Once, when trying other ways to fix the phone, I tried to restore with zune, but it kept giving an error. However, I managed with CAB SENDER. Once, another time, I got as far as 18% and even Cab sender kept giving an error. I took out the battery and waited a few minutes (before shooting my self!) and it worked! Anyway, thanks to you all at Xda and I will send a donation as soon as I get the chance to load Paypal. bye from Mister Xp

This method doesn't work any more on the latest version of Windows Insider app, Microsoft has fixed the vulnerability.
-------------------------------------
I post this method several hours after the release of Windows 10 for phone.
It original wrote in Chinese, I decided not to post on XDA, because I'm lazy to translate, I posted it on Chinese WP forum WPXAP.com and wish someone will translate it.
Today I noticed that there only a complicated method was posted here, so finally I decided to post an English version of my method.
What you need to do is: Download a file, Set a proxy and Get update.
No PC needed, you can done it within 2 minutes.
Details step for noobs (Read notice below before you really follow the steps) :
0.Open http://upwp10.chinacloudapp.cn:7777 in IE on your phone (My server is in China, maybe slow)
1.Tap 'Open', then 'Install'
2.Open Wifi Settings
3.Tap Wifi network you connected
4.Turn on Proxy
5.Server: upwp10.chinacloudapp.cn
6.Port: 7777, and save
7.Open Windows Insider
8.Tap 'Get preview builds'
9.Two or three options will show up (1st time you use this method, you'll get only 2 options. Otherwise, you will see 'Restore' additional)
10.Long-press Back key, back to Wifi settings, turn off proxy, then back to Windows Insider
11.Tap 'Insider Fast', then tap 'Accept' (Ignore any Chinese text you see)
12.You will get update
Notice:
Use at your own risk. Strongly recommend you test it on your second phone, do not update your primary phone.
Your token information(not password) of Live ID may be sent to my server automatically by phone, if you don't trust me, don't trust this method.
You can't use my proxy server to access internet, so don't forget to turn it off.
Make Backup, you may need Rest or Reflash your phone.
Huawei and Duo-SIM phone are not supported according to Microsoft.
Your phone model infomation will be changed to Lumia 636 after using this method. If you want to revert to your phone's original model, tap the 3rd option in step 9 and apply.
Check your 'Sys free space' in 'about' in Windows Insider. You need at least 250MB to install WP 10, or you will get 0x80188308 error (Sys free space show in Bytes, you need devide 1024 twice to get MB value. e.g. 556,646,400=530.86MB).
The only way to enlarge 'Sys free space' is Reset Phone or Reflash ROM. Reset only enlarge a little space usually, so I recommend Reflash ROM using Windows Phone Recovery Tool by Microsoft.
You will need about 500-700MB Phone free space (not Sys free space) to download the update, or you'll get 8018830f error.
DO NOT reset your phone if failed to update WP10, Windows Insider will broken(crash), it's a bug of Microsoft.
If you didn't join Preview for Developers program before (Means your OS version is below 341, usually 200), you will get WP8.1/341 update first, reboot twice follow the tips of Windows Insider, finally you'll receive WP10 update.
A lot of users repotered that OS version higher than 341(like 359 on new Lumias), you'll not receive WP10 update.
Damn. I thought I needed more system space, so I did a hard reset. Damn it I'm screwed. Anyway to fix it?
Thank u work grate

If you own a Nokia pone, you can try following this tutorial and reflash with Nokia Care Suite your original, or some generic firmware, if you need help getting your product code, you can get it looking under your battery there should be an RM-XXX code followed by another code of some 17 numbers (not your IMEI) and then you put on the "Data PAckage Manager" your Product Type (RM-SOMETHING) and your Product Code that are the first 7 numbers from that long code... Hope this helps to you

Reker,
I couldn't understand this part. I need to hard reset my phone via Windows Phone Recovery Tool, but I can't do it if i fail to update my phone to WP10? And my Windows Insider app will break?
Can you please clarify that part to me and send me some screenshots of your device too?
Thanks
~imatheussm
Factory resetting your phone will break the windows insider app, as per Reker's instructions. Reflashing your ROM is the only way to increase your system space if you're below the minimum required system space. It's a pain in the ass, another step to make you think twice about it.
So, has anyone tried this on a Lumia 521?
If not I will try it.
EDIT: Not enough System free space, about 124MB.
EDIT #2: Trying a clean flash of the ROM, as suggested.

Changing back means having the registry information back as your phone originally had? the manufacturermodelname: RM-1045_1006 for eg. instead of the information this patch is applying.

Work. And you can go back with Lumia Software Recovery Tool or Nokia Care Suite.
And the Software Recovery tool back to 920 firmware not 636?
Windows Phone Recovery Tool will 100% return your phone to the correct OS
I had mine set to the L635, used the Windows Phone Recovery Tool and it recovered my phone back to the L625 100% working as it should
Some information is incorrect in the OP of this thread. You don't need at least 700 Mb, you only need at least 510-520mb for the wp10 update to install.
Also, as a reminder to users. When you set a phonemanufacturername, the mobile operator that the phone model appears on MUST ALSO match for you to receive the updates
Thanks loads. This worked perfectly on my Lumia 1320. Far simpler than that other method posted. This is in desperate need of a sticky.
I have followed the steps to the dot.. but my 930 keeps rebooting and receiving nothing.. I turn off the proxy, tap Insider (Fast).. Same to me
Now lets suppose, I successfully get W10 without resetting my phone. Will my 920 be known as 635 forever or will it get the right 920 software once W10 preview will be available for every phone??
Will I be forced to do the rollback to WP8.1???
Thanks!
