I followed the unlockr's steps to help David test out his new guides, and I never had a problem. If your going into terminal and typing "su" and getting the permission denied message, that means everything DIDN'T go successfully. The skating androids when in bootloader means that you have an SPL that allows you to upload custom ROMs but says nothing about whether you have root. Follow the steps again paying particular attention to each one.
If you really want to root your phone easily and without problems or confusion, follow this guy's instructions:

The superuser.apk just doesnt remove when you unroot. Nothing is working as you didnt re-root.
If you want root again, simply root it again and you will be good.
I rerooted it over and over and still didn't w
ork.
Follow the manual rooting process and it will work. I promise.
Same thing happened to me but I had mine re-rooted within 5 minutes.
I NEVER trust those one click apps unless they come from UnrEVOked.
i have try different ways and still didnt work...could someone please help...
Honestly brother, you are giving people nothing to work with. You just say it didn't work. The manual root method will work, so as stated above use that. If you are saying you did use that method, then please describe where it is failing and what things look like. Post the link to the manual method that you have used, there are a few, which did you try, what steps did you follow?
Also, what do you mean it doesn't work/ You said you went into the superuser app and nothing is there. Well, I am confused as nothing is supposed to be there. The app does nothing when you click into it. It only goes into effect when you download and install a program that needs root. (an example is root explorer) When you install that app, it will open up superuser and ask for root permission and you can click to remember, etc and give it access. Explain what you mean by its not working......Unless you have apps that already have supervisor privs
i went to youtube....... when i type in the command ./exploid[/B it say denied.....Ok when i download rooted apps and try to open the apps superuser never come up for i can click allow....none of my rooted app ask for root permission. When i use the one click root process it say my phone have been rooted...
Follow the ROOT instructions in this post and in the links on that post.

OK, I am going to try and help but only if you post what you have done, what you are following, etc. You cant make a blanket statement and expect people to know where you are at.
What files are you using, are you using the root that I linked you too? How are you typing things in? Dont put the "" around the commands like its typed, just type.
Did you in fact set up ADB correctly? When you push in step 2, what happens? When you go to adb shell after that, what happens, when you change directory's to sqlite_stmt_journal in step 4 what happens? etc.
If you want help man, you gotta be specific. This is why you are not getting a lot of replies.

You have to follow steps to unlock the bootloader (achieving S-off) before perm root will stick. Read the thread on achieving S-off. Don't do anything you don't fully understand, so read a lot. Afaik visionary does not perm root with one click without first having an unlocked bootloader.
EDIT: Read the resource bible. It's a sticky in the dev forum.

If you have s-off and you have the eng 2007 bootloader, you're rooted. Make sure you have the superuser app installed to your phone. If not, you can get it from the market. You need it to gain root privileges in apps. If you have superuser you can test root by opening terminal emulator. Type su and hit enter. If you get a root request confirm it. The $ symbol should change to #.
You shouldn't need visionary anymore. Once you confirm root, uninstall it.

But without doing "permroot" in visionary, it's not permanent, correct? Cause I want it permanent, not temp.
Yes I have superuser installed.

Try what I said with terminal. If you type su and hit enter, you should see a #. If you do, congrats. Reboot and test terminal su command to see if your root sticks. Visionary won't tell you if you're rooted.

Ok I redid everything again (without doing "attempt permroot") and did what you said and the $ changed to #...however, when I first did the temp root, and then went into terminal to do the:
- su
- "cd /data/local" etc....it changed from a $ to a # as well then...before I got to the end and rebooted.
So I am permrooted then and can change roms? Why didn't I have to do "attempt permroot" in visionary?

Uh, that's not a website!
Like I said, you were already rooted. When you attempt perm root with Visionary, I don't think it tells you anything. Just make sure your root sticks by rebooting and then typing su in terminal. If you get the #, you can uninstall Visionary.
As for flashing ROMs: You need to flash a new recovery in order to make Nandroid backups and flash ROMs. Clockwork ROM Manager from the market will allow you to flash Clockwork Recovery on your phone. I don't know how much experience you have with flashing ROMs in general, but if you're a novice in any way I wouldn't start changing your system just yet. Read the resource bible, lurk the developer threads, and get a firm grasp on what you are doing. Get familiar with ADB and Fastboot. Be totally confident in your knowledge. You can still brick your phone or at the very least give yourself an unneeded heart attack and hours of troubleshooting sh!t.
Resource Bible
Good luck and congrats on root!
Yeah I am looking at the "how to flash a rom for noobs" thread out of the resource bible...it says "In the hboot menu select recovery and then the phone will restart. You will get a phone with yellow triangle error."
I select recovery and another screen came up regarding the clockwork with a bunch of options, it didn't restart. And when I selected the option that said "reboot" it did, but I didn't get a yellow triangle error
Any ideas there?
Sounds to me you already have Clockwork Recovery installed. You must have done that without knowing it. Beats me. I you go into HBOOT and select Recovery the phone will shut off and boot into recovery mode. If you got Clockwork Recovery version 2.x.x.x (with green typeface), that just means you have Clockwork recovery installed and can flash Froyo based ROMs (like Iced Glacier), make Nandroid backups, and a bunch of other stuff you probably shouldn't mess with.
Just know that you CANNOT flash Gingerbread based ROMs (like CyanogenMod 7) with CW v. 2.x.x.x
You need CW v. 3.x.x.x to use gingy ROMs.
I PM'd ya, but no when I hboot and hit recovery, it doesn't reboot, it goes to "clockwork mod recovery v2.5.1.2

I'm having the same issue as the OP. I'm quoting because I had a permroot stick with s-on on my previous MT4G. (I just had it replaced, damn power button)
Explain please? Why would it work on one but not the other?
I would have posted this in the development forum in the thread that had this technique, but I don't have enough posts yet or something?
Anyway, I have S=off, and visionary temp root works fine. But permroot in visionary r14 doesn't work, it just flashes like the button is pushed then does nothing, like I didn't even hit it. So I need to run the temp root everytime my phone starts up.
I didn't setup the engineer bootloader yet, should I do that?
Does r11 work better?
What is the next step to get permroot to work?
ok so i recently picked up a used mytouch 4g. i rooted it and have superuser ability along with rom manager. have tried and think i have installed 3.0.2.4 clockwork recovery. i flashed that multiple times.

you are correct in your assumption.
The HTC Glacier and Vision have a security protocol in place that will revert the phone back to a 100% stock fashion every-time you turn off the phone. If you wish to do custom ROMs, recovery images, and radio files you must turn the "s-on" to "s-off".

You can try the sh root.sh method.
1a ) download and install VISIONary.apk. Download from here
-Looks like you've done that since you have come this far.
1b) when you run VISIONary make sure both set system to R/W and Run Visionary.sh are both checked.
2) Download the script to the root of your SDcard
This is the file
3) Extract the folder from the .zip and store the folder with it's contents onto the root of the SDcard.
4) Download Terminal emulator from the market
-Link to the market for this app.
5) open the Terminal Emulator and type
Code:
$ su
#
The Dollar Sign " $ " should change to a pound sign " # ". If the Super user program ask for your permission, you'll want to grant it. You're screen should look like the box just above this line.
6 ) Change the directory to the root folder
Code:
# cd /sdcard/root
7) run the script
Code:
# sh root.sh
make sure you do not get any errors.
If you havent you can reboot into hBoot and look for s-off.
i personally used this method to root my phone before i left the t-mobile store when i bought the phone.

After doing the above method you're gonna have to reinstall the recovery from Rom Manager. Watch it carefully do not let the phone sleep (I recommend going to delopment check never sleep while charging and plug it into a charger while it downloads.) You have to pay attention because it will ask for SU permissions when it finishes downloading, and it for some reason only gives you like 3 or 4 seconds instead of the usual ten. If you have already tried installing the recovery you may wanna go to the SU App and make sure that Rom Manager didn't get denied premission which is the default if you do not select Allow fast enough.

Absolutely a great idea, little nerve wracking to make changes to hboot and radio but very worth it. The directions how to do engineering boot loader are in the ultimate s-off sticky. Confusing at first, but after you do it once it gets easier.

Seriously though, some of these phones won't root with visionary root.sh method. Bad news is if it's not working you will need to try gfree method to root which is indicative of a phone with the emmc chip that is considered to be faulty. For more info search for the thread about emmc chips.

so this is not a rootable phone?
I am trying to root my phone and am running into trouble early. I have watched the videos & followed instructions. Somehow I am either missing something or my phone is jacked somehow.
I made sure it's not in fast boot, USB debugging & unknown sources are on. I have tried visionary r14 & r11. I have also tried multiple factory resets.
OK, I use visionary with set system r/w after root checked. I go from there to Term. Emulator & when I type su it shows "unknown user root" without the quotes. I've tried to continue but it gives me other errors and S is always on when I check.
I've searched Google & the forums and haven't found much that's been able to help me.
If anyone has seen this I would appreciate the help. Thanks!
Visionary (r11 & r14) are only temp root tools. You must use one of the two methods (both are in my signature) to turn s-off. As long as your s-on you will not be able to permaroot your phone.
Once you turn off the phone, and turn it back on you've lost Root Access. and that's why it's given you that error. If you pull the battery wait about 30 seconds, put the battery back in. Then temp root you should see a "superuser" icon appear. Once you see that try your SU command from terminal emulator. The other thing you can try is setting up your ADB (link in signature). Navigate to the c:/adb folder then typing in ADB shell. You should see a $ sign appear. Type SU from the Command Prompt and it should ask you to approve the SU access on the phone. once you've gained temp SU access you can proceed with one of the two methods i've got posted to finish turning s-off.
It's the temp root I'm getting stuck at. I do get the superuser icon after I do the temp root. I go directly to emulator and type in su and that is when it tells me "unknown user root". I will try the ADB method when I get home from work if nothing else is figured out before that.
Same deal for me. Not sure if my MT4G is a newer model or what. I've literally done EVERY set of instructions and youtube videos on rooting and keep getting stuck at the same place. Typing su into terminal emulator and getting unknown user root. I have reset my phone, taken the battery out for five minutes and re-inserted it. I have tried both visionary 11 and 14 versions and clicked temp root. Once the temp root process completes and comes back to visionary+ I go straight to terminal emulator, type in su and get unknown user root. Unlike dbharr I DO NOT get a superuser icon after temprooting with visionary. It's not like i'm fudging up any part of the process here. I'm stuck at like step 2 of the rooting process. Any ideas anyone?
Software version is 2.2.1
You may have a newer chip set and may only be able to root with s-off by using the gfree route. It was the only thing that worked for me.
In my situation I had visionary installed, root folder in the root of my sd card, and followed the unlockr method for root access.
I temprooted and checked temp root on boot and rw one too.
I ran terminal emulator, typed in the commands and the process ran and looked like a success.
I powered my phone down and boot into hboot and s-on showed up.
I tried the same process and factory reset between tries.
I then found out there was another way to get perm root with s-off using a similar process.
I factory reset and placed visionary apk and gfree folder on the root of my sd card.
I went on the android market and installed root explorer (there plenty others you can use it only need to be able to access your root) and also terminal emulator.
I installed visionary and temp rooted (using same temproot method from unlockr.com) my phone I downloaded the gfree file and extracted it on my cpu then moved it to the root of my sdcard.
Then using your root explorer go into gfree folder and copy the file called "gfree" and only this file.
The go into the root of the phone and your going to paste that into the local folder in /data/local/
From there you type in a few commands in terminal emulator. It will run thru a process then power down.
Boot into hboot and verify it shows s-off
If so reboot phone. When your phone boots up visionary should have temp rooted your phone.
If so Open up visionary and uncheck temproot on boot and click attempt perm root. Your phone will reboot and you have perm root. Verify by typing su in terminal emulator and then if you get # your good to go.
If you dont get s-off try factory reset and repeat process, you should be able to find the instructions if you search gfree and it should come up but if im not mistaken its a stickie on the developement forum
Hope this helps!

and even after superoneclick says its rooted AND says says success when it asks if I want to test root by sending su command, whenever I go into terminal Emulator and type in su I get permission denied or unknown user root whenever I tried su through adb shell through Dos on my machine. I dunno what is it with my device. I did all of this after fresh factory resets just so you all know. I dunno my MT4G must have a newer chipset that's not vulnerable to the current exploits is all I can say. I've follow these instructions to the letter more than twice each time factory resetting just to make sure things are fresh. Still no dice.
I never did get mine working. I did get a warranty replacement & had it rooted within 10 minutes of being out of the box. That makes me think it was something with the phone. Best of luck to others with the same problem.

Yeah unfortunately am not in that same position. It sucks. Guess i'm stuck with it for the moment. Only reason I really wanted to root and upgrade was so I could download netflix. I went from the G2 to the MT4G and had NO idea it was just compatible with certain devices. I've tried different versions of the netflix app on here too but they all require you to have root. Hopefully they make the app compatible soon.
Here's an update everyone. I was FINALLY able to get everything working. I had to use a tool called Z4root to gain temproot. You can imagine my relief AND also frustration after I installed z4root and things just started running just the way it was supposed to. I gained temp root in a matter of minutes and after doing so I was able to use the gfree method to perform all other functions that are a part of the rooting process. And for the record ALL other tools did not work for me:
- Both versions of visionary + 11 and 14
- SuperOneClick using psnueter AND rageagainstthecage exploits
Just thought I'd share. Thanks a lot guys. I had already put my mytouch on cl for sale or trade for a G2 because I thought my device could not be rooted or anything. until about 1 o clock in the morning I got it workin...ha.
