Hey Guys,
Welcome to the FAQ Thread.
There are many questions being asked about various aspects of wp7, how do you do this, how do you do that.
For the majority of these questions, there are answers.
This thread is dedicated to provide answers to those questions that are repeatedly asked, but in an ever growing forum are "difficult" to find.
This thread will be regularly updated to provide a "one stop shop" for all your niggles.
Before you create a new thread, please read Mskips guide HERE and read this thread.
Many thanks for helping to keep this forum tidy and uncluttered.

FAQ's
[*]Q - My WP7 Leo tells me there is an update available, can i update? & Update is not successful, why?
A - What you have to ask yourself is, "what type of phone do i have?" which of course the answer is an HD2. Now obviously your device has been reg tweaked to think that it is an HD7, so why would the update work? - To put it bluntly, no the update will not work for your HD2.
.
Q - How do i install WP7 and get it working, im coming from Android or winmo6.5?
A - Look at the sticky guide by mskips, link above, please dont ask or open a new thread, all the info is found above.
.
Q - How do i activate live services?
A - Look here for a good guide
.
Q - What number do i call for Microsoft to get activation code?
A - Most are listed here or use skype, see here
.
Q - How can i prevent my HD2 from relocking?
A - Try this guide >> UPDATE: Flash a NoDo rom (thanks guys)
.
Q - My alarm volume is too loud, but i cant find how to reduce it?
A - Change this reg key : HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Alarm\InitVol = 50 (currently set at 100 %)
.
Q - How do i reduce the UI sound level, its still very high when volume is set low?
A - Change this reg key : HKCU/ControlPanel/Volume/MaxdBatten from 45 to 100
A - You can also change this key : HKCU/ControlPanel/Volume/MaxSystemUIvolume from 30 to 20 (this sets max volume to 20 not 30)
.
Q - How do i increase the in call volume, its set to max (10) but is still too quiet?
A - Change this reg key : HKCU/ControlPanel/Volume/MaxinCallUIVolume from 10 to 15 (15 is loud enough for me, be careful going much higher)
.
Q - How can i make simple changes to the registry as above?
A - There are several reg editors out there for example this one or this one - Thanks guys
.
Q - How do I remove WP7 and get back to android?
A - Reboot device and enter magldr. Select opt 5 (usb flasher) and flash your desired nandroid rom. You will to reformat your sd card. Follow the very good guides in the android forum. For flashing to 6.5, enter bootloader and flash a stock rom (again you will need to format your card).
.
Q - The stock camera is shocking and quality is low, what can i do?
A - Try this app out - thanks Sergey_H
.
Q - Alarm Clock too loud (and scare the [email protected] out you as it did me)?
A - HKCU/ControlPanel/Sound Categories/Alarm/initVol - and change figure from 100 to 75 (or what ever you like but 75 is good)
.
Q- Green tint whilst taking photos at night?
A - try these settings on camera (switch back to auto for day shots) - SCENES - candlelight & FLASH - auto

Seriously though, these faq's were mainly pre mango once NoDo had been released.
Just letting the dust settle after the mango update, mango faq can be found in the thread.

Hi all,
as everybody I am wondering what things I might do to speed up my small device.
-I have both Spb Pocket Plus 3.1 and Wisbar 2 to choose from as a task-manager.
-I would like to see the actual available amount of mem. so I know when it is time to do a soft-reset.
-I have Pocket Mechanic available. No doubles in the notification que.
-I have the Ext-Rom empty and available for use.
As I am installing the Task manager, would it be better to install it in the Ext-Rom then rather in the device-memory, would this change speed of the device ?
Which of the two Task-Manager (in its latest beta-version) is better to speed up the system, as I understand both do slow down. But which is worse ?
I did read the advice from craig in the sticky thread about our pda, but the information there is rather old already. Is it still bad to have task-managers show You the actual memory available ? and does this change the speed of the device ?
thanks for any answers / advice
Ruud

That should be enough for now, let me know when you want references to more forums that discuss the ways and means of speeding up the device.
You can also review the wiki which gives some hints and tips on cache, changing memories, and also remove animations from the menus.

I just ordered the xv6800, an upgrade from my Treo 650. Upon ordering, my research began (about 6 hours ago!)... It is now about 3 AM, and I am due at work in 4 hours. My questions are simple, and I know I am a noob loser, I know, but if someone could guide me to answers, even a simple answer like search words or anything, I would soooo appreciate it!
Questions/Statements:
Heres my experience level:
For my treo to support a 4gb sd card, way back in the day, I had to edit the rom and change the FAT 16 to FAT 32. There was so many guides on how to update the rom, that it was really childs play, even though I was sweating every step. So basically I know nothing, but I have fiddled.
I want to have the iphone skin/mod/theme or a "cube" theme (god I am a newb). Do I have to modify the rom? Are their any guides?
What is Flashing? Is this the same as unlocking? What is unlocking? (Guides?)
Is setting up VOIP way out of my realm? I saw this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317070
but since it is not an idiot proof step by step, i got discouraged. What are those pictures all about, is it really as easy as just copying the configurations displayed in the screenshots?
I also want to have:
Slide to unlock (iphone function)
X closes the application (i read somewhere this is a 'must have')
MMS
SMS chat thread (like the treo's, also read somewhere this is a must have)
Another major question: Are mods for the sprint mogul, the alltell version of the phone the same as for the xv6800, or are the processes and such all way different (I am under the impression they are the same, but just checking)
I really think these are some of the basic questions that tons of NOOBS want to ask, but are intimidated to ask on such a knowledgable forum. Any help will be greatly appreciated, and I look forward to making plenty of paypal donations in the future, again and again and again haha, to all you guys (n girls) that can help pimp my ride errrr, phone.
-Nate
Welcome to XDA!
The first thing you need to do which would help expand your knowledge of the resource here is to read the General & sticky threads that relate to your application. These threads will branch off and direct you into the direction that you will want to take your device.
There is too much information here to be idealy mapped out; reading & bookmarking will become common practice and as topics, phrases and jargon become familiar, so will your speed in finding, installing and customizing...
Hello, i just want to say that it was a good move u made from switchin from 650 to 6800, i did it from 700wx to 6800. i would recommend first to check ur rom version and if it is not the newest rom which is 2.17, u might wanna check the customs roms out there or update it before staring messin with the custom apps because it happened to me, i had an old one and I installed a but of apps n then the new rom came up and it messed me up so i had to do a hard reset.
As for the cube, search keywords like cube, htc touchflo, htc apps, you might also like;

Verizon doesn't have a 2.17 ROM out. That is only for Sprint. There are custom ROMS for Verizon devices that use some of the 2.17 drivers.

Best advice is use phone, see what you like and dislike. Search for solutions to things you don't like. If you cannot find solutuions, create thread.
Read the wiki
If your looking to change rom, follow proper procedures in this thread. If you have problems in flashing, ask questions in that thread.

i can recommend using theme for 6.5 - just system way, not ham3rs method for that build.
21898 is 6.5 line and transparencies are available by using 6.5 tsk.
you will avoid potential problems that can emerge with ham3rs method(that was made for COOKS and for 6.1 mainly).

Thanks for all that, but I have to say - I did search for that! Honestly, and I found a few threads which methods did not help for me and I read peoples comments after which stated they had the same OS ver. as me and were having problems -also with no one helping them figure it out, so no solution..and thus I did not want to even try it on my phone...also another method I found mentioned several OS versions and did not include mine... also with people commenting as I have said.... so please do not think that I do not use the search function -believe me that is the function I use the most! Honestly!...
Now I know I did not check all that were available, but maybe a few must have slipped my eyes (I was on my phone at the time also switching back and forth between apps trying different things)...so please forgive me..

sorry if I sound like a noob...but what do you mean by '6.5 tsk'... and also what do you mean by 'using theme for 6.5 -just system way..."
do you mean using a theme for 6.5? sorry I just want to make things clear -also I drank some alcohol so maybe I may be a little slower than usual (haha) -I apologize in advance!
Could someone help me out here? This is the one thing I am currently stuck on, giving me more trouble than anything else so far...

thanks but no luck with those links, they are out dated and refer to older windows mobile os's ....
I thought this would be something simple to do , esp seeing all this wonderful development going on here, but now it seems as though either no one cares to make the bars transparent -or they are settling with creating the wallpaper to be cut to pieces (one for the top bar, one for the main screen and one piece for the bottom bar)...which is not making it transparent, but it has the effect..just when you switch wallpapers you have to do the whole process again...
please someone advise me, there has to be a solution out there somewhere... =\

1. I recommend updating your ROM by downloading any of the custom ROMs in the ROM Development section. There are tutorials on there to guide you. Custom ROMs provide a lot of eye-candy and stability (though they usually have their own bugs). You should try multiple ROMs until you find one that best suits you. You could probably try the EnergyROM series (like the one in my signature).
2. (Same as above).
3. You could download a registry editor (do a search on XDA to download one) (these are built-in to most ROMs) and change the values found here to improve your camera. Though, I do think the camera is still sensitive to even the slightest motion.
