Any idea when or if DL30 will be OTA by Verizon? - Fascinate General

DL09 means it was a stable build on December 9th, 2010. It got approved by Verizon and was delivered OTA on about January 12th to the nation.
We all know that prior to that DJ05 never saw an OTA delivery.
So, my question is to you more experienced folks, if DL30 means it was a stable build on December 30th, 2010 and it appears to be fully operational with no bugs (as of yet reported) by anyone, do you think it will get OTA'd out and when?
Logic from DL09 would support that it will come soon, but I just wanted other opinions.

Stop misleading people. The text message you got is saying that a software fix for the emergency calling bug is coming. It is not saying that Froyo is coming.

Seconded.
How does this "DL" system work? From what I've been reading its DL01 to DL05 to DL09. Where the hell did DL02-04 and DL6-8 go. And it's jumping to DL30?

DH12, built August twelfth
DI01, built September first
DJ05, built October fifth
DL09, built December ninth
And here we are with DL30, from the 30th.
The second character represents the month and the remainder represent the day.
Not so sure about the first character personally, but someone here still know. If they say, released Gingerbread on April first 2011, it might be ED01 or DP01 or DD01 or something else entirely.
EDIT:
EA28 has been released as a bug fix to DL09.
ED01 is correct for Aoril 1, 2011
DD01 would be April 1, 2010
DP01 is nonsense

Verizon has people testing all sorts of things. Their marketing, warehouse, and distribution stuff may be all iPhone 4, but I doubt software testing is going on to much with the iPhone anymore, not this close to product launch. Also, they have dedicated users to test various things, so regardless of what hardware they may have coming out, they will still have people testing software updates for phones, as long as they are going to continue to support them and have updates scheduled for them. As for who is creating the update, Samsung is coding/prepping it for Verizon.

maybe really soon considering verizon has taken the DL09 update down due to the emergency call bug.

[Update] 2.2 update coming confirmed

I went into my local tmobile store yesterday in hope of returning my vibrant because of the GPS issue. The employees (2 of them) confirmed to me that the update will come next week with the fix for the GPS issues. They said it'll be along with 2.2 update. I wrapped up my vibrant and bust out of the store as quickly as I went in.. seems like good news to all of us vibrant users. Now its a waiting game... if the update doesn't come next week ill be returning this vibrant for sure.

That's not exactly "Confirmed" chances are that you'll probably be returning that Vibrant next week. Otherwise the Fascinate would probably be shipping with 2.2 and as far as I'm concerned none of the leaked documentation has indicated that it will.

Well, T-Mobile has already confirmed an update in September but I doubt it would be next week. I also doubt that employee knows something that the rest of the world doesn't.
The tmobile rep I talked to on the phone yesterday said the GPS update would be separate from the 2.2 froyo release and should be out in the first 2 weeks of sept and available as an OTA
I went in acting as if i'm just a normal user that doesn't know anything about xda developers or any android website.. (if they actually looked at my phone it has superuser app installed and all that ****, i'll be rejected for sure) on of the guy told me first that the update should fix that and it is a software problem (sigh, i knew that) and he asked me have i read all those on internet and i just simply said NO. he then said the update is gonna fix the GPS issue. I acted more stupid by asking him "do i have to get anything to get an update". he said it'll be rolled out over the air. then another employee, the girl jump into the conversation and asked me about the phone blah blah blah, and she said that the update's coming next week. BTW the GPS is not really a big problem here since i don't really use it.. i tried to return the phone becuz i was thinking i should wait for the G2, i just bought vibrant so far pretty good, applied lag fix and i always get 2200+ on quadrant..
PS. there's no reason for me to lie and speculate things, i just say things that i experienced..
Are you saying you dont think it will come next week, or are you saying not at all? Cuz its definitely getting 2.2, im just not expecting it next week...

I know it's bad enough for me to want to return mine if the fix doesn't work. The GPS on this phone is pretty bad as is. My TouchPro 2 was MUCH better. Both for lock times and keeping the signal.
Driving around in 3 major cities on clear sky days, my Vibrant loses it's GPS signal pretty much every time. Sometimes it resumes GPS after a few seconds, sometimes it takes a few minutes or never regains GPS lock. It's inconsistent to say the least.
I'm using Copilot Live and Google Maps on both the TouchPro 2 and the Vibrant. The Vibrant fails with either software.
PS: This is my second Vibrant. The first one had the same issues. I've tried various GPS fixes, but most if not all cause Google Maps to completely lock on my phone. I have to reset the phone to get it working again.
the galaxy s line will definitely be getting 2.2 at some point. I highly doubt it will be next week though. give samsung a little time to drop the fascinate at least.
oh and t mobile reps know absolutely nothing that we don't, so don't take their word on things like this before they're confirmed. they just want you to buy phones/keep your phone.

given that the galaxy s line is sold worldwide. i hope that samsung wouldn't mess this one up. it makes me wonder cuz thinking of "Samsung Rolled out 2.2 update really fast" will make them look a LOT better after the "behold" epic fail. I expect the update but i have until the 16th to return since i live in california and i get 30days window, so i might just wait till the 15th (can't say that i don't give them any chance). if the update doesn't come, i'll return and i believe many more will do the same if they still can.. the G2 is coming out and it looks like it'll be pretty advance. Don't we all just love the phone that are Top of the line without us having to modify it...

I spoke to my local t-mobile store in nyc, she openly said by end of september.
So lets see..... if Samsung release the update and tmobile hold it for some reason and not OTA it yet. Would it really hurt their sales in the us? And if Samsung taking too long to release the update.. would it hurt their sales worldwide ? Anyway we're all just the user who hope one day we'll wake up, picked up our phone and see the update screen waiting for us to press yes. So lets hope that our manufacturer and carrier wouldn't turn us away by doing it "too late" .. and we shall see

Ever since Google announced 1.5 people have been calling or going into stores asking about updates. Frankly we get asked constantly and are tired of getting asked. We give a generic response like "in a few weeks" just so you will stop asking. Once we know you will know and it will be all over tech blogs.
And when there is a release date not everyone will get it at the same time. OTAs roll out in groups so you might not even get 2.2 till October if you wait for the OTA.

Dead on right there.. The only thing our internal memos have said is Samsung has committed to a September release date for the GPS Fix and rumoured September release date for froyo. All that means is they will start pushing a update in September. To comply with this then can start pushing it September 30th. If your waiting for a update to keep you from returning the phone then just return it now and get it after the update comes out.

Yeah the people at the Tmo store will tell you anything to keep you as a customer... At one of my previous retail jobs I was told to lie twice a day if possible, just to get me in the mode if I had to bc I didnt know something.. Its their job to sell you something, if it happens to be a lie, so be it...
T-Mobile announces the same updates to employees as they do to the public.
Sometimes the public finds out about the updates before the employees.
If T-Mobile hasn't announced it somewhere, the employee is making it up.

To a extent, it is true but if you're tech savvy that is incorrect. When a person gets a OTA, the person can get the link of where the OTA is located and post it up. When this is posted, anybody can MANUALLY push the update to their phone. It doesn't even require root, I'd assume it would be to rename to update.zip and boot into recovery and press reinstall packages (Non-Clockwork).
This is how it was during 1.5 -> 1.6 for the G1 and other phones.

I got mine before launch n didn't get the update. I know 3 ppl that got it yesterday n all 3 bought months after I did and at different tines. It does not go by date.
Date on mine is 7/10/2010 and I got the update yesterday, 10/8/2010. So the whole date thing is pretty irrelevant.
It would be better if you started looking by phone number or IMEI numbers.
I mean duh, all algorythms are numerical.....look for a significant number.

Just go and flash the official JI6 OTA with Odin, that is what I did, its the same as the T-mobile OTA.

09/03/2010 box date here with no OTA update yet. Agreed that there is probably some number based algorithm used to push the updates, but the box date is certainly not it. I also doubt it is really random over a large base such as their nationwide subscribers; among a smaller base, maybe.

of course sprint is calling this a leaked experimental release. But i give them credit for at least making moves in the right direction for froyo. I see alot of happy users so far with minor issues.

Nothing at all about dk28
no more GPS?
I don't see anything at all on my Sprint page about this update or even anything specific to the version of software on my phone.
I installed this update earlier today and the GPS on my phone no longer works. It worked before and I never noticed any problems or delays that others reported. I've tried wiping the data and cache numerous times and even re-installing the upgrade but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on what I might try? At this point I question whether or not this is the same update we'll receive OTA...

PEople have had this issue including myself. The update is rolling out state by state units hardware 4 first then 5 should be started later today.
I had to ODIN back to di18 to get my GPS to lock now its amazingly accurate

Can you please write the exact steps to follow and give links to the files you used?? ie pit/odin/.md5
Also did you do a complete wipe or not? if not complete wipe.. which .md5 file you used. Thanks !

So you think Sprint's plan is to push this update to everyone OTA and then have all the end-users install Odin and fix it? Even while denying that there is such a release? Hilarious!
This is not an official rollout. It is a leak. Those who install it, and are comfortable with some level of hacking, may proceed at their own risk, as usual.
But no one should believe this is an official release from Sprint.

Is it actually worthwhile to update from dk17 to dk29? I'm not really having any issues on dk17. Might just wait to confirm its final before going through the reinstall process.

Um.. That makes no since..
He had to odin BACK to di18 because he installed a leak..
the official is based off the knowledge of the user never hacking the phone and leaving it stock.
Therefore; no the average user will not need to use odin.. infact won't even know about it.
But those who have come to xda WILL need to odin back to stock di18 in order for the official Froyo to work when it is launched.

Suppose you got an update OTA. Wouldn't you consider it official?
If you have followed the original thread (which has been closed), the update happened OTA to a non-Sprint person. That is why many people claim it's official.
Why would Samsung release DK28 as official Froyo full of bugs when their Eclair builds were flawless? It doesn't make any sense. I sure wish people would stop saying that this is the official release and confusing new people. This is NOT the official release. There is NO evidence for that. Its NOT a finished product at this point.

UGH. How many times does this need to be explained? He had a .4 hardware revision. .4 hardware revisions are for TESTERS. He received the update OTA because SOMEHOW he got ahold of a hardware revision that only TESTERS should have. This has all been discussed a thousand times.
Also, if this WAS the official release it would be a disaster for sprint.

I didn't remove the link. It still works. But the Sprint site is very slow today. If you manage to get through, you will see that the quote above is accurate.

Verizon's admission of DL09...

I got a text saying DL09 had a bug where emergency calls couldn't be placed at the lock screen.
Anyways, what are they thinking? Aren't builds like this "secret"? Wouldn't telling everyone about a software version they don't have access to fuel some anger and get people calling in demanding the update?
Seems odd to me that they just sent out an official message for an unofficial software release...
DL09 is official. DJ05 was the secret test build that you're thinking of

Then I laughed at VZW's cockiness in assuming that they were going to push an OTA update to my phone. Silly Verizon.
What is build DH12? Was that the original release build? My phone came with DI01, so I had never heard DH12.

I think you're mistaken about your alphabet. H comes before I. DI01 was the first update pushed by VZW.
Perhaps this will give VZW some encouragement to get DL30 pushed out more quickly.

Pushing out a possibly unstable and/or un-thoroughly tested release in order to fix a bug in a previous release isn't a very good idea.
So let's hope not.

I'd imagine they'd take the route of just fixing the version in DL09, and releasing that. It'd take a lot less effort to do all the QA, plus it's not like they like us anyways, and much less likely to brick a lot of phones.
what the hell is everyone talking about "pushed by verizon"???
I've been checking for updates at the about page daily it seems, and it says no new updates. Do I need to manually download them from a verizon site or something?
"Pushed by Verizon" means Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates are "pushed" to your device by Verizon through the InnoPath ActiveCare application (MobileUpdateClient.apk).
If you are running stock, you will see a pop-up on your device that will ask you to push a button to begin downloading the update.
Keep checking for updates, it will be there soon. I got it two days ago.

If your screen is locked, and you have an unlock pattern set, you can still call 911 without unlocking the phone.
FCC dictates that all phones must be able to dial 911 at any time.
Your incredulity is a bit misplaced. Maybe you should work on being better informed.

Eclair to Froyo: How often do phones check?

Hey all,
Quick question. Does anyone know how often or how our phones query the server for update checks? Is the software first downloaded before asking us if we want to upgrade? Does the sync icon light up while it is downloading? Does our battery charge need to over x to before the software either downloads and/or notify us?
I'm curious as to how the entire process works.

I have an Evo, but I follow the tech news. Software updates are released in waves so that if there are issues with an update, they are isolated and they can stop sending them out. Essentially, the first wave are the guinea pigs. I'm not sure how they decide who gets them, but I'm pretty sure it's random. You will be notified on your own when you can grab the update. It starts on the 21st and everyone should have the update by the 25th. Of course, you can probably just find the update online once it's out and do it yourself:

When the update is available to your phone, it will download it silently in the background. Once the download is complete, you will get a notification that an update is ready to install. As long as you have enough battery left, you will have the option to install it. Otherwise you will be prompted to plug into your charger.
As far as the frequency your phone checks for updates, I'm not sure other than at boot time.

Also, I believe the updates are 'pushed', which is to say, Sprint contacts your phone directly not vice versa.
Given how infrequent updates are, having your phone poll for them would be a wasted process.
Our phones already poll for app updates through the market and the update is hosted on googles servers.
I don't think it is too far fetched that our phones are notified somehow through this process?

It would make sense, with the 'wave' method mentioned above, that it's just pushed. Thats the fun! Back when I used to odin to D*27 to let it OTA DI18, it would happen really randomly, anywhere from instant to half an hour... never waited longer though, as its open to request, I just 'check for updates' of it was taking too long. Either way, unless you are one of the first wave, I would wait for XDA's Devs to look over the one from the first wave, and then DL their update... Im sure they will get one from the first wave... I will probly Odin to DI18 tomorrow night and wait, just for fun, as I do agree there is an attraction to that, kind of like when you get a surprise PS3 update that gives you some new unlocked functionality... reminds you why you bought it... course with this phone, we would feel that way if it were more timely, but hey, theres the future...

My phone doesn't poll for market updates, i'm only notified if I actually open market.
Besides, this is from sprint, not from market.

I'm not so sure, as I remember when receiving the ota for di07 and di18 the download was slow so I turned on WiFi, at which point the dl stopped all together.

I don't believe they would do it that way. A vast majority of users are on the latest while there is probably a minority who didn't update past DI07. They get the latest first and then get the stragglers in the later days.

from the leaked .pdf from the first day, after the screenshots. thanks to whoever leaked it! DI18 is priority, you cant really sit on the older versions, I think those 'hop updates' are for old stock sitting around with the old versions waiting to be activated. Oh and the DL11 is a typo, they just cut and pasted from a previous release most likely...

That happens on any download. Switching connections in the middle of a download stops it. Ive done this before. If you start on 3g, you'll have to finish on 3g, or restart on Wifi/4g

maybe it will be automatically updated with a script when they start the ota's. idk, just a guess.
UPDATE PROCESS: The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
Once your Epic is in the queue and eligible to download the update, a message will be pushed to your device saying that a software update is available. If you are not yet in the queue and you attempt to check for a software update manually, you will receive a message saying “no upgrade is available”. This simply means your device isn’t in the current wave of updates.
All customers should have access to the update by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
just got this off sprint site.... so phones dont check... pushed, and you cannot even manually trigger it... I even Odin'd to DI18 a bit ago, to see if I could trigger it activating DI18... no dice. OK... whos in wave 1... cough it up!

Just curious, can I ask why contact you first? Are you aware of something I haven't read?
I'm rooted and rommed, but watching hubby's unrooted (won't let me touch or mess and screw up his!! Doesn't believe me I can fix whatever I break!!) Epic.
Really do appreciate someone looking out for everyone. I am going to hold on his until I see some positive results, because I can't fix what Sprint breaks!!
