sorry to tick you off.
You should be able to udate to the OTA by using the update.zip the same way you did for the leak, if we don't get it over the air...

cool i appreciate it i wasnt sure thats all
OTA update will/should come threw just fine. Now haivng it install correctly could be a whole different story tho as we DO NOT know the specifics on the file that was posted over the weekend everyone jumped on before it was taken down.
Put it this way tho I've had engineering units from mfgs in the past and even those update correctly OTA so I wouldn't be to concerned about it. Plus if won't take long for someone to actuaaly grab and post the update.zip once it is pushed out.
Yeah that would be good. I still haven't received mine.

Has anyone actually gotten the OTA froyo yet? I've read things that said it was within 24 hours of the 20th... Also, when you say loading a custom theme, that doesn't mean a launcher right? Like LauncherPro?
OTA is not out yet. All previous info about release dates was just rumors.
And no, custom themes doesn't mean launchers, since those are just apps. It means actually modifying system files like framework-res.apk for different status bar, notification area, etc...
You really don't know as every company handles it differently and Moto for some reason is trying to keep the device locked down. However if you look at past phones (at least the two Androids I have had)
G1 normally you got the option to upgrade but you would lose root or would have to wait for JesusFreke to get the file and root it.
The Droid Eris there were actually 3 leaks to 2.1 all which prevented you from getting the OTA because of the boatloader #, however a couple of weeks after they finished updating everyone HTC released an OTA for all leakers (which allowed everyone to gain root conveniently enough if they wanted to downgrade and get root)
So really no one knows except Moto but normally leakers get it one way or another either through OTA or having someone upload the OTA as an update.zip file and you flash it to your phone. Hope that helps and wasn't too much of a history lesson lol

Our current estimate is that full deployment should be completed over the next few weeks.

but is there anything official in regards to when 2.2 is coming out? cuz they were saying end of summer and to day is aug27th and still nothin
Summer ends September 23rd, so I am guessing very late summer. Probably some time around the second week of September, if not that last week of summer......hopefully not later than that.

I went into my local tmobile store yesterday in hope of returning my vibrant because of the GPS issue. The employees (2 of them) confirmed to me that the update will come next week with the fix for the GPS issues. They said it'll be along with 2.2 update. I wrapped up my vibrant and bust out of the store as quickly as I went in.. seems like good news to all of us vibrant users. Now its a waiting game... if the update doesn't come next week ill be returning this vibrant for sure.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
That's not exactly "Confirmed" chances are that you'll probably be returning that Vibrant next week. Otherwise the Fascinate would probably be shipping with 2.2 and as far as I'm concerned none of the leaked documentation has indicated that it will.
I want to believe you. I really do.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
That is good news. Btw, is the gps problem that bad for you to want to return the phone?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well, T-Mobile has already confirmed an update in September but I doubt it would be next week. I also doubt that employee knows something that the rest of the world doesn't.
The tmobile rep I talked to on the phone yesterday said the GPS update would be separate from the 2.2 froyo release and should be out in the first 2 weeks of sept and available as an OTA
I went in acting as if i'm just a normal user that doesn't know anything about xda developers or any android website.. (if they actually looked at my phone it has superuser app installed and all that ****, i'll be rejected for sure) on of the guy told me first that the update should fix that and it is a software problem (sigh, i knew that) and he asked me have i read all those on internet and i just simply said NO. he then said the update is gonna fix the GPS issue. I acted more stupid by asking him "do i have to get anything to get an update". he said it'll be rolled out over the air. then another employee, the girl jump into the conversation and asked me about the phone blah blah blah, and she said that the update's coming next week. BTW the GPS is not really a big problem here since i don't really use it.. i tried to return the phone becuz i was thinking i should wait for the G2, i just bought vibrant so far pretty good, applied lag fix and i always get 2200+ on quadrant..
PS. there's no reason for me to lie and speculate things, i just say things that i experienced..
Are you saying you dont think it will come next week, or are you saying not at all? Cuz its definitely getting 2.2, im just not expecting it next week...

I know it's bad enough for me to want to return mine if the fix doesn't work. The GPS on this phone is pretty bad as is. My TouchPro 2 was MUCH better. Both for lock times and keeping the signal.
Driving around in 3 major cities on clear sky days, my Vibrant loses it's GPS signal pretty much every time. Sometimes it resumes GPS after a few seconds, sometimes it takes a few minutes or never regains GPS lock. It's inconsistent to say the least.
I'm using Copilot Live and Google Maps on both the TouchPro 2 and the Vibrant. The Vibrant fails with either software.
PS: This is my second Vibrant. The first one had the same issues. I've tried various GPS fixes, but most if not all cause Google Maps to completely lock on my phone. I have to reset the phone to get it working again.
the galaxy s line will definitely be getting 2.2 at some point. I highly doubt it will be next week though. give samsung a little time to drop the fascinate at least.
oh and t mobile reps know absolutely nothing that we don't, so don't take their word on things like this before they're confirmed. they just want you to buy phones/keep your phone.

given that the galaxy s line is sold worldwide. i hope that samsung wouldn't mess this one up. it makes me wonder cuz thinking of "Samsung Rolled out 2.2 update really fast" will make them look a LOT better after the "behold" epic fail. I expect the update but i have until the 16th to return since i live in california and i get 30days window, so i might just wait till the 15th (can't say that i don't give them any chance). if the update doesn't come, i'll return and i believe many more will do the same if they still can.. the G2 is coming out and it looks like it'll be pretty advance. Don't we all just love the phone that are Top of the line without us having to modify it...
@op, this should be in general. has zero to do with development, as it's more just a discussion
I spoke to my local t-mobile store in nyc, she openly said by end of september.
So lets see..... if Samsung release the update and tmobile hold it for some reason and not OTA it yet. Would it really hurt their sales in the us? And if Samsung taking too long to release the update.. would it hurt their sales worldwide ? Anyway we're all just the user who hope one day we'll wake up, picked up our phone and see the update screen waiting for us to press yes. So lets hope that our manufacturer and carrier wouldn't turn us away by doing it "too late" .. and we shall see

There has been no official internal memo about the release of 2.2. The reps are just speculating and telling you what you want to hear so you don't return your phone.
Ever since Google announced 1.5 people have been calling or going into stores asking about updates. Frankly we get asked constantly and are tired of getting asked. We give a generic response like "in a few weeks" just so you will stop asking. Once we know you will know and it will be all over tech blogs.
And when there is a release date not everyone will get it at the same time. OTAs roll out in groups so you might not even get 2.2 till October if you wait for the OTA.

Dead on right there.. The only thing our internal memos have said is Samsung has committed to a September release date for the GPS Fix and rumoured September release date for froyo. All that means is they will start pushing a update in September. To comply with this then can start pushing it September 30th. If your waiting for a update to keep you from returning the phone then just return it now and get it after the update comes out.

At one of my previous retail jobs I was told to lie twice a day if possible, just to get me in the mode if I had to bc I didnt know something.. Its their job to sell you something, if it happens to be a lie, so be it...
T-Mobile announces the same updates to employees as they do to the public.
Sometimes the public finds out about the updates before the employees.
If T-Mobile hasn't announced it somewhere, the employee is making it up.

To a extent, it is true but if you're tech savvy that is incorrect. When a person gets a OTA, the person can get the link of where the OTA is located and post it up. When this is posted, anybody can MANUALLY push the update to their phone. It doesn't even require root, I'd assume it would be to rename to update.zip and boot into recovery and press reinstall packages (Non-Clockwork).
This is how it was during 1.5 -> 1.6 for the G1 and other phones.
How do they determine what vibrants get it at what time? Because my girl friend and I both have vibrants and we both bought it at the same exact time and she got the new update and I didn't. Both if or phones are completely stock with no root or anything.
Also with this update will it change the gps settings that I changed a while ago that was posted I this site that was suppose to make the gps better?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
We have no idea how they determine the order that people receive updates.
Yes it will update the gps. So far mine is much better.
They do it in order of 31337ness... she's winning.
-bZj
They push it according to unfaithfulness, so you better check on her
No there is no way to to know when you are getting it, but if you are so anxious about getting it you can flash it thru ODIN, no rooting required.
Two weeks ago i received the ji6 update
last night, my phone received a firmware update
i thought it was the froyo update
i installed the new firmware
once i installed it, i noticed i was missing features
i no longer had the task manager or media Hub
i checked my phone's info and the firmware update actually brought me back to 2.1 update1
Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Both the original JFD and the OTA JI6 (as well as all the intermediary leaked firmwares) are 2.1 update1. 2.1 update1 denotes the current revision of Eclair itself, while JFD and JI6 denote revisions of Samsung's verion of 2.1 update1.
So take a peek again and see which version of Samsung's baseband is installed.
it says T959UVJFD
To see your baseband and firmware versions, make sure to use Settings/About Phone..
Seems like we're serving as test beds for the Sammy dev's, maybe not such a bad thing. The j16 update fixed my hardware locked phone. I'm hoping they resolve the battery draining issues before, or with 2.2.

Happened to me as well, its because JI6 was pulled for being "not so great" (it was bricking too many phones)
I know this isn't a Cliq forum but my wife is getting an operating system update on her Cliq right now - I wonder if she is beating me to Froyo??!
Edit: I suppose she is actually getting eclair.
This may be a dumb question but: should I be worried that this hasn't happened to me as of yet?

Do you have any actual evidence to support the claim that JI6 was "pulled" (I assume you mean by TMO/Samsung)?
JI6 was never pulled and it is actually a great update. Sped the phone up a bit, added some new things, and made the GPS decent. Besides the bricking (which was probably user error) no problems.

Have to disagree with the "great update" part. lol
But as far as the update being pulled, with no word from T-Mo of it being pulled I called BS. Furthermore, why would they push an update to phones and revert them back to JFD? Doesn't make sense.
Same thing happened to me this AM. I recieved an exchange unit yesterday, because after the JI6 update, the GPS still would fluctuate all over the map which was especially frustrating when navigating because the app would continuously reroute you. Received the exchange unit, got it set up the way my old phone was, and made sure to check the baseband version. It had JI6. Woke up this morning with an icon similar to the missed call icon, clicked on it, and it said there was a new update from TMobile. Performed update which took about 10 minutes, then checked to see what was different. Checked the basband version and it is now T959UVJFD. Checked GPS with GPS status, and I have strong signal from 13 satelites, but only locked on to 2 with 143 ft accuracy... Last night before the update had accuracy to 12 ft. WTF!

Possible Theory
While I haven't received either the official OTA, nor the mysterious overnight one, I have a question. Is it possible that the overnight push to revert is an attempt at scrubbing the unofficial JI6 updates from the phone only to install the actual official one? So if we chose to update through Kies originally when it was leaked or some other method, could the be T-mobiles way of resetting and executing?

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Is this T-mobiles attempt to flush out the bad update? But why waste the resources to push out a revert "update" to phones? Who knows, it's some kind of consipiracy.

A poster on another forum claims the same reversion OTA just happened on his phone, and it wasn't even rooted, which wouldn't fit your theory. Although just getting all the relevant facts in these situations is often the biggest obstacle.
Maybe they need to roll us back in preparation for Froyo?

Hey all,
Quick question. Does anyone know how often or how our phones query the server for update checks? Is the software first downloaded before asking us if we want to upgrade? Does the sync icon light up while it is downloading? Does our battery charge need to over x to before the software either downloads and/or notify us?
I'm curious as to how the entire process works.
Thanks.

I have an Evo, but I follow the tech news. Software updates are released in waves so that if there are issues with an update, they are isolated and they can stop sending them out. Essentially, the first wave are the guinea pigs. I'm not sure how they decide who gets them, but I'm pretty sure it's random. You will be notified on your own when you can grab the update. It starts on the 21st and everyone should have the update by the 25th. Of course, you can probably just find the update online once it's out and do it yourself:

When the update is available to your phone, it will download it silently in the background. Once the download is complete, you will get a notification that an update is ready to install. As long as you have enough battery left, you will have the option to install it. Otherwise you will be prompted to plug into your charger.
As far as the frequency your phone checks for updates, I'm not sure other than at boot time.
Sent from an Epic I haven't bricked yet.
Also, I believe the updates are 'pushed', which is to say, Sprint contacts your phone directly not vice versa.
Given how infrequent updates are, having your phone poll for them would be a wasted process.
Our phones already poll for app updates through the market and the update is hosted on googles servers.
I don't think it is too far fetched that our phones are notified somehow through this process?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It would make sense, with the 'wave' method mentioned above, that it's just pushed. Thats the fun! Back when I used to odin to D*27 to let it OTA DI18, it would happen really randomly, anywhere from instant to half an hour... never waited longer though, as its open to request, I just 'check for updates' of it was taking too long. Either way, unless you are one of the first wave, I would wait for XDA's Devs to look over the one from the first wave, and then DL their update... Im sure they will get one from the first wave... I will probly Odin to DI18 tomorrow night and wait, just for fun, as I do agree there is an attraction to that, kind of like when you get a surprise PS3 update that gives you some new unlocked functionality... reminds you why you bought it... course with this phone, we would feel that way if it were more timely, but hey, theres the future...

A software update to EB13 (Froyo) is available for the Samsung Epic 4G via Google OTA. Customers will become eligible for the
upgrade across a 4-day period based on their status with the Google servers. 67% of users are currently on SW DI18 so the first
OTA package we will publish will be an upgrade from DI18 – Froyo (DL11). We will be publishing hop upgrades from DG27 – Froyo
and DI07 – Froyo as soon as possible following the initial release
OTA Duration time is dependent on current device usage: 10 – 25 minutes, with installation time of 6-8 minutes
from the leaked .pdf from the first day, after the screenshots. thanks to whoever leaked it! DI18 is priority, you cant really sit on the older versions, I think those 'hop updates' are for old stock sitting around with the old versions waiting to be activated. Oh and the DL11 is a typo, they just cut and pasted from a previous release most likely...

UPDATE PROCESS: The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
Once your Epic is in the queue and eligible to download the update, a message will be pushed to your device saying that a software update is available. If you are not yet in the queue and you attempt to check for a software update manually, you will receive a message saying “no upgrade is available”. This simply means your device isn’t in the current wave of updates.
All customers should have access to the update by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
just got this off sprint site.... so phones dont check... pushed, and you cannot even manually trigger it... I even Odin'd to DI18 a bit ago, to see if I could trigger it activating DI18... no dice. OK... whos in wave 1... cough it up!
Whosdaman,
Just curious, can I ask why contact you first? Are you aware of something I haven't read?
I'm rooted and rommed, but watching hubby's unrooted (won't let me touch or mess and screw up his!! Doesn't believe me I can fix whatever I break!!) Epic.
Really do appreciate someone looking out for everyone. I am going to hold on his until I see some positive results, because I can't fix what Sprint breaks!!
