Dk28 bugs - Epic 4G General

Yesterday a around 3am I was walking home in the blizzard and I couldn't make phone calls. I had ALL my bars (even 4g) and it wasn't doing anything. It'll freeze on the phone app so if I scrolled, it wouldnt show until I shut te screen off and on and then whn it connected to a call, there would be no noise and I couldn't do the toggle trick cuz the accelerometer was twitching shutting my phones screen on and off even while away from my face so I tried sending a text and it didn't wanna send and my phone stalled so I had to do a battery pull and wen it rebooted (luckily it still rebooted in <5 seconds) the battery was "low" wwith 11% when rightbefore I rebooted it was 45%.
Sammy needs to get their **** together because that was ridiculous. I mean, I was able to open and read engadget no problem, but I couldn't make a call or text with my phone? Really? I finally went back to di18 and now I'm probably gonna exchange this "phone" because Froyo, to me, is a mandatory update considering it was the first time android became "complete". Gb is just optimizations, so its not as important as froyo.
the one thing I can give to Apple over everyone else Is that their stuff just flat out "works" and you never really need the next iOs update, but if you did, you got it at the same time as everyone!
Like seriously, the bugs sowed themselves at the most inoppurtune time and I couldn't do anything about it.
My epic is being traded for a touch pro 7 the day it comesout if there's no official froyo by then. My $500 will go towards paying a htc employees 2 week salary rather than samsung.

Try reflashing dk28. Those glitches are not normal with dk28.

3rd day with phone, 2 self resets already

Ok, so what happenned on the 2 instances that this happenned was all of a sudden I lost cellular signal and the phone made a sound and the signal bars switched to a circular sign with the line across it. I put the phone in airplane mode but nothing happenned, within a min phone restarted it self...
The phone is stock. No root or anything like that.
Ps... using the keyboard to type this, and its much easier compard to my old droids kb.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Weird. Haven't experienced that before myself. I have had it lose signal and display the circle with a line through it but it's not very often and only for a second or two.
Just did it again when I went into pandora. I realized its actually not resetting, but the phone freezes up and everything reloads. Including signal and 3G... the screen shutz off and you can't turn it back on until it reloads

I had the same problem with mine. I exchanged it for another one and have had no problems since

Damn. Just when I get it the way I wanted it... Ugh...
What exactly was yours doing big jim?

Your second thread mention "problems" you have with your phone. Go to a Sprint store.
I agree exchange it urs must be defective. A couple others have hd same issue.

I had the same problem on my original Epic. I had three problems in total on that phone.
Samsung's crap coding that caused the phone to not sleep. (fixed after 2nd update)
The phone would randomly restart itself
During calls, the screen would freeze while illuminated. The call wasn't interrupted, but aftwards I had to pull the battery.
In the end I had to exchange the phone for another. Only problem was, the new phone had that couple millimeter gap with the slider. Sprint said it wasn't enough for third exchange though.
Man, this sucks... Just when I put all the apps I wanted on it and got it running the way I want it...
I'm gonna give it 1 more week see what happens, then return perhaps for another epic. I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking to the epic though, i really like the camera capabilities of the phone.
I'm actually going to run 4 tests this week
I'm going to leave the phone untouched from 10:00 to 21:00 and note the percentage in battery with juice defender on/off and also noLED on/off, see what happens... to make it even, i'll just leave the phone in my car, and it won't be used except it's usual email checking/texts/missed calls etc.
my droid unused for that period of time usually was around 80%. it was running a custom rom with 1 ghz kernel as well, so same power requirements i'd say. except epic has a bigger battery.
Battery is pretty bad with the Epic but Im not surprised at all about that. I have about 50% right now with heavy texting, a few phone calls, and listening to music. 8hrs unplugged. I think it would make it to 14-15 hrs easy with heavy use.
Phone calls kill the battery the most I believe.
And I'm using Juice Defender.
Mine was dying with heavy texting, some GPS and browsing within 6-7 hours, no phone calls....
I did a little test today.
When I'm at the police academy my phone is in my car from 1000 to 2100. My rooted 1ghz droid would be at 80% by 2100. it'd get it's regular share of texting/emails and all that I couldn't look at until 2100.
I did the same thing today with the Epic, with juice defender, it was at 79%, so pretty much exactly the same...
tomorrow I'll do the same test with JD off and see if it makes a diff

I have just installed Juice Defender (free version) and using it as installed. I'll see if it helps. I have a question about the status of TRAFFIC, it is listed as "Leave Data/WiFi enabled while >50KB/15s", what does this mean? I can guess that JD will leave the Data connection ON, even if it is scheduled OFF, if the phone is sending/receiving data at a rate greater than 50KB/15s. Is this close?
Thanks

Mine has been doing this every once in awhile. Even in a good signal area, its like the radio randomly decides to reset. I'm currently trying to see if its a software or hardware thing.
Sadly the modem was backported from the samsung moment. It has only partof it power managment system in it it will befixed swhen froyo comes

I am having the same problem with my phone suddenly. If I have multiple apps open, such as radio, browser, and facebook at the same time, it seems to cause it to reset itself. It's not a full hard reset, but more of a soft one, screen goes black and everything starts up as if the phone was just turned on.
Maybe it's time for a replacement?

Awful lag at the end of the day.

Update: the biggest problem is my wifi drops every 2 minutes. It just disconnects and I have to turn it off and on. My wifi is 2-3 bars and wifi sleep policy is never.
How can I fix this?
I know that a restart can fix this, but that shouldn't be necessary every day on the "world's most powerful smartphone". This is like Captivate lag, 10+ seconds for action to be performed... this is just my most recsent problem and this is my 4th atrix.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Problems with phone:
Wifi
Bootloader
Lag
Overheats
Multi touch
That's my list I've put together on my notes app since I got the phone.
Lol just trying to submit this post I ran into the lag and the wifi dropping problems.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Wow just tried playing GT racing during my current lag-attack. It was like a stop motion game.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Sorry but it sounds like there's something wrong that you're doing. The Atrix isn't that bad of a phone, although I'll confide that there are some dud phones from time to time.
After 4 phones and still having these sorts of problems, I'd say there's an app you're installing that is ****ting the bed. 10 seconds of lag is unheard of, man.
Yesterday I went through and uninstall tons a lot of apps I haven't used in awhile.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Today I played a short 1:30 minute video I recorded and I couldn't put my phone in my pocket. Too hot.
For every task I try to do I have to go and toggle my wifi off and back on because it disconnected. Nearly impossible to watch a YouTube video or play an online game.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Also. I was using my phone on my desk today. I noticed that if its on a flat surface, the screen responsiveness is messed up. Would randomly respond to places where I didn't even tap, as well as being unresponsive to touch at some points.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Don't forget battery life. I've had 2 atrix batteries, both barely last me the day with little use of the phone.
Battery life is the only good part... I can get about 4:15 hours of display time per charge on about 35 percent display brightness.
My first one the GPS couldn't even get a lock lol... captivate was better. And I think it has gingerbread now.
For this post I had to reset wifi 3 times!!!¡¡¡
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Oh and im rewted with the recommended list of apps frozen with TB.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
I can´t believe you created a new thread to "complain" about your phone. There are plenty of other threads where you can rant about the phone. I actually don't have any of the problems you listed... If this is your 4th Atrix, why don't you just stop nagging about your horrible experience with it and buy a different phone. If it's that bad, nobody forces you to keep it...
Didn't realise this was a restricted forum.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Bummer man. Sorry to hear you've had such bad luck. My Atrix experience has been just opposite of yours -- everything has worked quite well. Coming from an iPhone, my expectations were quite high too. My gps has been stellar, wifi rarely drops, my phone doesn't get hot, I have almost no lag, and things generally work well. My guess is that it's either a hardware QC issue, or you've got some software installed that is really misbehaving. Hope you get it sorted out -- there's not many things more frustrating than having a laggy phone.
You should write on your thread more than every hour.

Try using battery mix, this way you can easily find the rough app that is causing problems.

EVO keeps force rebooting

For some reason my EVO keeps restarting randomly on me, and all the time too.
I'm running CM7 7.0.3.1 and savaged zen 2.2.0, and I have an extended battery and I rum juicedefender.
Now I don't think its the battery because I've had it for month
Its most like savagedzen 2.2.0 but idk maybe its CM7 too.
I think this started after I started playing words with friends. Doesn't seem like a memory intense app and I never had this happen but lately its been rebooting randomly, like I'm download from the market. Internet, and even posting this thread!
Basically I'm thinking of switching to either virusrom or Mik, which is better?
Sent from my dope fly fresh EVO
my chick is having the same issue. hers just reboots at random after starting to use her pandora app about a week ago.
her evo is running:
Mod version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3.1-Supersonic
Kernel version: [email protected]#1
Ditto
I have same problem, and have tried various ROM's, most recently a complete wipe as per Mikroms instructions. Only pattern I can make out is it tends to start when the CPU is stretched a little, such as running Tango over 3G, or even Angry Birds for over ten minutes. Once it starts though, it reboots several times before it finally quits.
There was another thread on this, but no solutions, instead it turned into an argument over whether it is CM7 fault; not very constructive. I have tried different batteries and changed up CPU speeds, still to no benefit.
Like I said, if I don't tax the system I have no problems, and that so far has been my only solution, but a disappointing experience with my Evo.
My dad's kept rebooting too even after the gingerbread OTA. He is running a bone stock phone(not even rooted)
Wife is having the same issue on her stock EVO with the new OTA
same issue here, playing WWF,stupid zombies or surfing the web. on decks rom and on the gingerbread 2.3 stock.
Apparently, this is a common problem with the EVO. Mine started as soon as I accepted the recent OTA update. There is an XDA thread somewhere. Just do a Google search.
Same here & 2 of my other friends. I am on my 3 or 4 EVO (lost count) & everyone does it. This is only one I rooted as well. I noticed it does it less (once every few weeks to a month) with a custom non cm rom. Also restart your phone at least every couple of days (usually I did every day). It works out pretty well. What I tell my friends don't hesitate to tell sprint you have a issue so it gets documented. So you have proof to fall back on when you had enough. It's not like you pulling one over on them. They see if you have all these issues for so long why just now saying so. I have found that for some reason phone resets in middle of calls multiple times same day with certain Bluetooths. I drive truck for living so I on phone alot with customers/work/friends/family/etc. Always Bluetooth, and did up to 5 times a day. Then bought one top of line (jawbone icon &now Bose) and doesn't do it like that anymore. Hope this helps any of you. & again any issues you get tell sprint. Last time I got a new EVO in box, & they let me keep my old one. So gave it to my mother. Then had it replaced under her #.

Mine started out with a reboot
every so often. It finally got so bad it would reboot over and over until I pulled the battery for a few. Somewhere in the process, my GPS crapped out as well. It would work for a few minutes and then freeze. Not a good thing when you are not from Boston and trying to navigate 8am traffic to get somewhere.
I got a refurb as a replacement. It was in perfect shape and only had like 111 minutes of talk time. No telling why it was sent back but I've had no issues with it.
Mine is doing this too.. its annoying Ive restored backups and it just keeps rebooting, i dont know whats wrong. Im on avaFroyo 2.2
I don't remember where but there is a thread about this very topic. From what I read this was attributed to a corrupt data partition. My gf phone is starting to have this problem. Only fix I have read so far is to reroot phone and take it to sprint. I am waiting til they can root the ota. Then I will unroot her phone and get a new one.

So I bought a used nexus s 4g..

..I love my Evo but have been wanting to really try it out. Good deal popped up and I am not letting go of me Evo yet. Gonna give it a good honest try and see where it stands. My Evo has a special place with me. Anyone else went to the NS4g from the Evo? Thoughts?
I went from the OG EVO to the NS4G. Had it for about 2 months and then went and got another OG EVO two days ago. Frequent dropped calls, i mean constantly to the point where i just had to get my EVO back. I think its just a samsung problem. also on the NS4G the back button sticks a lot or sometimes wont work at all, had the same problem with the Epic 4g. Also doesnt seem to be a lot of devs, theres not a wide selection of different roms as there are on the OG EVO section. it looks nice but ive learned my lesson with samsung phones went through 3 Epics and 2 NS4G all with hardware issues and service dropping
My wife has an epic and I told myself i wouldn't get any Samsung phone, but w ics around the corner I am curious what a stock build will function like...I will prob be back w my Evo if it treats me like that. My Evo is great. Just after a year I really am running out of things to do to it lol. Maybe I just need a break haha. Was ur ns4g rooted? My Evo has been for close to a year, class 10 card, extended battery. Cases.
I don't have one, but my dad just got one so he's always calling me asking me how to do this or that. I've sat down with him a couple times and tried to explain stuff to him, but he's never owned a smartphone before and can barely operate his computer.
His battery life is insane, though. He forgets to turn mobile data on when he's out and wifi when he's at home, so he leaves both on all of the time. He's a fairly light user - emails, phone calls, checks weather, sports scores, etc. Last time I was over, I checked his battery usage and he was at 3 days off the charger & still had 30% left.
I didn't get battery life like that with my old flip phone.

Wait... so the phone does not switch all its data requests to the wifi (except MMS)? I thought that was done automatically whenever the phone was connected to a wifi network...

No, it does. I'm just saying that he keeps his radios on all of the time - which is something that I don't do. If he uses his GPS he forgets to turn that off too.
My point was mainly that he does absolutely nothing to extend his battery life and still gets 2-4 days on one charge.

Yeah, I just unrooted and updated an og Droid for my dad, never owned a smartphone. I set it up w a few nice apps and when he came over the other night it had been on for 15 hrs and it was at 70 %. He said he was happy w the battery life lmao. Most use it got was here, he had questions. Wound up installing agile lock free because he liked my lockring haha. Even the og Droid was still fun to use. Definitely slower than my Evo, but it was stock and works great for him.
Well, I am pretty excited about this nexus. Hopefully it won't be a let down.

[Q] Any reason *NOT* to do the OTA Gingerbread update?

First, a bit of background. My wife won't let me root her Epic, mostly because she's had to return it 3 times for hardware failures and it's annoying to have to wipe the phone each time.
I told her to hold off on downloading the OTA update to Gingerbread, to make sure there aren't any crippling bugs that show themselves after the masses get a hold of it.
Is there any reason that she should stay away from the OTA update?
None go ahead and update
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
I'm not rooted, updated to GB, but I'm getting random reboots and freeze ups (had to pull battery each time). Other than that it's good to go. Battery lasts longer, but WI-FI range decreased.
If she won't let you root it and put on a GOOD ROM then the next best thing is the OTA so go ahead. It is easier to root on froyo and then flash a GB ROM though. I know a few "stockies" and they love it. No issues with their phones at all.
Before I rooted, EI22 was fast and stable. But I was getting problems keeping the GPS connected and WIFI was not as stable as in froyo. The only other problem I noticed is not being able to change the volume while the phone is next to my ear. Rooting and installing ACS ICS solved most of these
Don't wipe you're phone after the
Update, it will break wifi.

Ha-ha. My wife is the same with her epic.
Upgrade to gingerbread. It's much better even in stock form.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm on stock GB, lets see ..
1. weak GPS (i've never had gps issues before)
2. keyboard lag on physical keyboard
3. screen likes to come on during calls and then my cheek hangs up on people (lots of fun)
4. screen loses responsiveness randomly
at this point i'm ready to drop kick the phone out a 5 story window. so my personal recommendation is if you aren't going to use a rom, stick with froyo. also word just came out that there is a already a new 2.3.6 version of GB coming for the epic. Hopefully this update will fix some of these issues.
wife did OTA upgrade to gingerbread without my approval.
My wife has the original Epic and did the OTA upgrade herself, but has been complaining that battery life is far worst. It's been about 2 weeks maybe.
So I did a factory reset and so far so good. However, it's only been a few hours since I wiped it so only time will tell. I'm told wifi is buggy now from reading other posts, and will report back on that aspect.
If the battery life still suck, I'm going to be forced to root this damn thing and flash it with a battery saving rom.
Any suggestions? I'm new to the OG Epic when it comes to modding.... I'm on a rooted EpicTouch via Starburst.
going to start looking for a stable rom.....
thanks!
Thanks everyone. I kinda figured that there would be some common issues with gingerbread that they'll need to release a maintenance update for in a couple weeks.
I've been running CleanGB on mine and it's been awesome.
oh yeah i forgot to mention weak wifi. i can be 10 feet from the router and get 1 bar on wifi.
I used the flash update for GB that was posted here a while back and I can't say I've noticed any considerable improvements or diminution in quality apart from the GPS which appears worse than before. Battery life may be a bit better than it was under Froyo but there's no real incentive to upgrade from Froyo as far as I can tell.
A friend who installed via the OTA has been dealing with very poor battery life ever since - he says that Android System usage is up over 64% and is awake time is considerably longer than the time is screen is on for whatever reason. He told me he normally leaves GPS on all the time but the usage shows very minimal resources going to GPS. also, he never turns on WiFi and he's in a very strong signal area.
Wifi is fine here. Solid connection from a story away. If. I'm in the same room I get full bars and 65mbps link.
Also zero reboots on two household epics since the update.
But dude, you've got to put on a kernel to fix the keyboard. My wife thought I was a god when I did that for her on froyo, there was no question it had to be done again in gb. She sends hundreds of texts a week (over 2k texts in a month not uncommon) and the keyfix saves what must add up to hours a month in retyping.
Running swupdate or odin takes 5 minutes, tops 10...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I just got the message that I could install Gingerbread, but then it failed. Not sure why but Clockwork broke it.
So my question is, does GB fix the bluetooth problem involving wiimotes?
If she won't let you root it, then go ahead an OTA, if she has issues *let's hope so* then you'll be able to root and fix her issues.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I have the same issue. My wife has an Epic and she doesn't want me to change from stock. We just did the OTA GB update about a month ago and it broke a WHOLE bunch of stuff.
1) Random mic feedback/squealing.
2) 3G turns off unexpectedly, so when 4G isn't available we get no data service.
3) Gmail contact sync broke, getting google.apps. error message.
About to throw this thing off the roof. Maybe I'll convince her to let me go to Cyanogen 7.
I think most had all these issues because ota updates imo are a horrible and unreliable way to update. Especially updating over existing data from a previous build of android. Yea it sucks starting over, but... when you do it wipes everything clean and I rarely hear of people have those issues when it's done that way. I had issues myself at one point. Did a fresh odin install, formatted data, updated, formatted data again, then reinstalled everything fresh and haven't had any issues since. Like no issues at all.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I updated from Stock EC05 (Froyo) to stock EI22 (GB) as soon as the google download was available. That should be the same as OTA. I was in a rush b/c I tought the stability of GPS and bluetooth was bad on Froyo. I was wrong. The GPS was completely unusable after the update--GPS apps usually froze within 5min (GPS Status & CardioTrainer) and required multiple reboots to fix. Just a mess.
I was planning to do a factory reset and a clean install, but then I stumbled across GPS_fix for EI22. So I flashed the GPS_fix and it was stable after that.
After investing the time with time making sure I understood the process and how to back up and restore everything that was important to me. It is pretty painless.
Initially I did not consider rooting b/c that would preclude software support by Sprint. Well the couple times I went to the store for that, I was not impressed. If I know zero, I they know less than zero. So that is worthless. So why suffer for $100/mo when I don't need to. And Sprint still gets $100/mo, a Win-Win.
CWM5/CleanGB 1.0
Root it and throw CleanGB 1.0 on it in the middle of the night after backing up everything so she doesn't know you did anything to it. After she says how nice the new "Update from Sprint" is, then tell her you rooted it.
Problem solved!
