Losing battery at about 8-10% every hour on idle

Hey everyone,
My phone was doing great with the battery life until recently. It might have been some app that got an update that effed me up, but not using my phone all day, I lose battery real fast.
Not sure what's going on, but it's dying real fast!
Any ideas or help?

My phone did that from day one practically. I honestly thought it was expected. Later I scrapped all of my apps and reformatted basically. That's when my battery life became amazing. I'd suggest checking all apps for excessive syncing issues. I am pretty sure my culprit was Yahoo Mail. I've since switched to GMail with a bookmark to yahoo if I need to check it.
Hopefully you can find out which app is frying your phone. Good luck.

I was having the same problem a few days ago. I wiped all data and did a factory reset. After restoring apps only (not data), my battery is running like a champ again!
Battery was so bad that it was leaking 1%/minute, it seemed like.

Are you guys checking spare parts, which gives you battery usage stats? It's free on the market. Also, do you get poor coverage in that particular area? Constant searching for service def causes battery drain as well.

You guys never mentioned if you did the airplane mode trick and killed the DRM service. Mine drains about that fast if I forget to do those. Even if I do remember to do them, it still drains much faster than it should but at least I can make it through a whole day if I don't play any games.

in the froyo 2.2 betas they have out for the Epic, there's an option to disable data along with airplane mode and shutdown when you long press the power button. You can still get calls and texts when you disable data..
I thought its a neat feature. It should help you if you're running a 2.2 beta rom.

I think the huge drain is linked to the 50% no signal bug. I would always come home from school with a nearly dead phone every day. I began putting it into airplane mode every once in a while to combat the signal bug and now I come home with 70% left.

Same here. I go somewhere on sat mornings where I don't get service (and don't need my phone). If I don't put it in airplane mode, I'll easily lose 30% in that hr and a half.

EVO battery life owns my Epic

Seriously, my GF and I just got new phones and her EVO rocks my Epic. I don't get it, thought the EVO sucked juice compared to the Epic?
We both have juice defender, otherwise hers is stock with standard sense widgets. She checks facebook and texts all day, plays words with friends but that's it. I'm obsessing, rooted with setcpu conservative 100/1000, I have force uninstalled mediahub+drm services, do the airplane trick on reboot, brightness on auto, services off except wifi when browsing, etc.
My phone lasts maybe 12 hours, hers has gone 27 hours, lasts 18+ easy every day. I feel like if I even touch my phone I lose 10%. Snes games? Phone is done. I basically let it sit and it slowly dies, yet still ends up 90%+ display usage on the battery.

What rom are you using? Did you odin to stock? Calibrate your battery?

I only got 8hours Until I got me, an extended battery Now I have mine on full bright and 4g,wifi,bluetooth,gps on full time. And 4 apps that update every 10 minutes 3 to 4 hours talk time and about 100+ text, get on the internet etc and the battery last about 12 hours
The biggest battery drainage from my phone came from 3g I live in area where 3g fluctuates allot which caused the battery drain
Have you ever thought of getting an extended battery?
Or you dont like the extra bulkiness
Otherwise can't you take it back and switch out for an evo?

I like my Epic like my women, slim and naked ;-)
I'm all stock, odined back to 2.1 before updating. I would suspect 3g due to my near-roaming status at home except for juice defender.
I can't calibrate my battery without clockwork (stock recovery now), think that would make a significant difference?

Watch for SyndicateROM Frozen, paired with the Twilight Zone kernel, in the next 24 hours. ACS team lead rjmjr69 got 30 hours of heavy use on the stock battery at 1.2ghz, and 16 hours extreme use (4G, WiFi, 3G, lots of SMS, MMS, email, web browsing, voice calls).

Hrm, ill keep an eye out. I usually have gone custom rom by now but like the Epic's stock ui, need the customizability of 2.2, and havn't seen a daily use rom that's fully stable yet for it...

There will be a Fully Loaded version including TouchWiz.

I'm digging the Anarchy Launcher! Minimal complaints with it, I personally like the 3d cubed page animations. Konane, that ROM is sounding so epic and delicious, man!

That is a key (perhaps not the only) problem. Set your brightness to as low as you can stand it (8% is my number). Use as much black & red as possible (if an app has a night mode, use it.) Use an all black wallpaper. These actions will not cause any miracles but it will make a noticeable difference in battery life.
Worst case scenario (all white background at full brightness), the Epic screen consumes more than three times (yes, >3x) as much power as the EVO. Of course it looks marvelous doing it.

Hrm, thx mosttoys, ill try it. Though honestly most of the time it looks like it's around 0% anyways (which is honestly where I like it).

Little info for you guys. I'm sitting at 15% right now after 11 hours. I didn't touch my phone except for a 45min conference call and half hour workout using 4g+pandora. I realize this is likely average for Epic users. Except check out my GFs super Evo.
Light use, words with friends, texting, browsing (she is unemployed and I work from home so I can vouch that she has been on and off it), 59% afterf 12 hours...

To be honest, the features that made me choose the epic over the evo have let me down. The keyboard misses and the screen sucks too much juice. My gf still hasn't plugged in her evo, its at 42% 15h20m.
But, I just installed the new syndicate rom and have high hopes. I don't want to jump the gun but my keyboard seems fixed and it's very quick. If all proves stable and I get comparable battery life (~15 hours would be fine) ill be more than happy with my epic. I would hate to lose this screen and am used to a hardware keyboard again. Just hate feeling like I need to plug it in every time I use it.
Oh and the call quality is the worst I have ever experienced but I don't know if it's the tinny speaker or sprint...maybe both (came from tmobile).

My epic was working good but today was the final breaking point for me. My phone is literally used in life a death situations (I am a paramedic if you couldn't guess by user name lol) and today I was on a call where I had to pull my battery 6 times to get it to dial out.
For me that is a deal breaker. I have learned to live with the keyboard by slowing down. I was debating on giving the rom you are using a try and seeing how that goes.

This probably won't apply to you if it's saying the display is 90%, but two other battery drains that you didn't mention are "use wireless networks" for location and google talk, which auto signs in unless you change it in the talk app settings.

Why don't you try switching phones with her for a day or two and see if it's still the case. If you have horrible reception in an area, that can quickly drain the battery. There are so many variables that come into play and the second you two leave each other's sides, there is no way to compare the phones.

Thx for the suggestions. My location settings are off and I signed out of gtalk.
We have been right next to each other as she isn't working and I work from home. However, while she was bragging how much "better" her phone is she mentioned that she keeps gps and wireless on all day. This could have an impact considering the spotty service here, I just thought that juice defender would take care of it (should turn off 3g).
Btw, I had her not charge her phone. She is sitting at 16% 1d2h53m

Running some of the different ROM's will help out anyone looking for better battery. I recommend trying it out i was not very happy at first with the epic after all the hype then I gave in and started rooting and flashing and I love the phone now.

Battery Saving Tip

Hey Guys,
Not sure if anyone has ever posted this but I thought I would share how I am able to get 2 days plus on single charge...
I only recomend this if you are not totally dependent on your email, facebook, gtalk, etc to sync.
I have my email accounts on my phone but I don't need to receive them instantly meaning they are not dire important so this works for me.
Android's biggest battery killer, which most of you probably know, is data syncing in background and just data connection in general. What I personally do is keep 3G data off at all times by going to settings->wireless and networks->mobile networks->3G Data and uncheck it.
Obviously with this off, you wont be able to connect to web, get emails, download apps, etc... But if you live in a 4G area like me, all I do every once in awhile is flip on 4G from dropdown let it sync or do what I got to do then flip 4G back off so there is no connection anymore... This will save so much of your battery but it is up to you to check things when you need to....
I hope this helps some people because it helps me a lot... I always recommend this to customers that come in my store if they are not depending on work email and such...

I have done those things since I've had this phone in august and everytime I talk about getting great battery life the haters come out and say well you didn't have sync on blah blah. Freaking retards. Especially if you are sleeping why not turn off sync for the email that is not going to come anyways. I haven't seen the battery life yet as I did since eclair though.

I know they can say all they want but it works I keep getting 2 or 3 days

You can get juice defender to do this automatically as well. You can also have it only activate data when the screen is on or for certain apps. Just sayin

Personally, I think juice defender is crap and battery life doesn't save as much as doing it yourself... Im just saying...

Actually my biggest killer is display. Our devices our the only ones with 90%+ battery usage for display, yet they advertised that it required 20% less battery!

I know! The display is a killer but even so doing this with full brightness and I can still push a day and a half... I usually keep my brightness all the way down though and manage to push upto 3 days...

I get 56 hours using Ultimate Juicedefender.

Wow...i use to get great battery life. I'm using lowest brightness setting, sfr, and ultimate juice defender and getting only like 16 to 24 hours of life.
What else are you guys doing? I use to get 50 hours but not anymore..
I thought I knew all the tricks in the book. But I use my phone constantly. Above average I would say.

I am not sure, I keep lowest brightness and keep data off almost all day except for occasional checking but maybe 10 minutes total of data being on... I have noticed with EC05 battery life lowered even on complete stock... Most people in my store hve epics and all have suffered worse battery since the update... It didnt matter if it was OTA or OTW...
Maybe try and get a new battery...

I think the reasons the 'haters' come out is simply because you're stating your getting better battery life and then revealing you're castrating your phone. It is a smartphone after all. It's supposed to do all those things you turn off. This isn't a phone which is only supposed to make calls. I mean, if I wanted to check my email once a day, I'd simply do it while I'm in front of a computer.
I don't believe I'm one of said-haters but possibly providing a bit of information on where they're coming from as well.
I think it's well documented that Android phones pretty much suck in terms of battery life, especially when compared to Blackberry. Man, RIM got it right on that aspect.

How is that castrating your phone? I can still do everything else on the phone... You don't need a constant data connection to use it like a PDA. Do all tabs have a constant data connection? No, so are they not going to be considered PDA because they lack internet sometimes? no
I am sorry to say but if your managing your phone and doing things to better, that is not castrating, that is good device management and what should be done so it runs how you want...

Well, it sorts of like taking a porsche and not pushing it past 2nd gear. Some people are happy with it, some are not. On one hand, battery saving posts can be thought as misleading, if the premise is that you dont compromise any functionality. I prefer to charge my phone everyday and not worry about battery, but when your battery is dying when you need it in the evening, than one is of a different opinion entirely.
One thing which I realized to late, is if you are at work in the office or somewhere with wifi, you can toggle 3G off and not lose any functionality, since wifi uses a lot less juice.

I have tried I new battery, I have three that I alternate between. I have no idea what has happened to my phone. It could be the phone itself

And I did say from the beginning what it does and what you loose from it... The only reason it was posted was to try and help people who may be newer to android and needing to squish extra minutes out of their phone for the day... Or they may find themselves not near a charger and almost dead and need their phone so turn off data to preserve the battery... I mean it doesn't "cripple" your phone to turn off data... I can still play angry birds, check my calendar, call people, text, etc. You don't need your phone to have data to use its features...

Have you tried reflashing stock ECO5 and starting from scratch? The only time I started noticing a big difference and I reflashed to stock and customed it again it fixed it...
But you're right, the phone could be giving out...

R800x 2.3.3. battery life absolutely deathly

Okay so I posted here a week or so ago about how my Xperia Play was epicly failing....it was force closing everything and dying in just hours.
So I factory reset and used Titanium to restore all of my apps and stuff...and so far the crawling speed/force closing has for the most part abated (opening up texts and contacts still sometimes takes forever or force closes)
but the battery issue remains. My battery is absolute garbage at the moment. It drains by 10 percent per half hour if being used or even more!! And it gets hot constantly, and obviously at that time it really sheds the power and dies quickly.
If I'm CHARGING the phone WHILE using it heavily, it WON'T power ABOVE the % it started at!! It stays constant or goes down!!
I'm not sure what to do. Should I let the phone die, keep it off, and charge it while off till its 100%?
Or maybe my phone is approaching the situation it was a week ago...I constantly check the running apps and its the usual suspects, nothing crazy. I had to delete official facebook app because it almost ALWAYS lagged and oftentimes force closed.
It says cell standby is using 40%, wi-fi using about 22%, voice calls 17%, phone idle 15%, and dialer 14%
What happened to my phone? Why is it such a clusterf*ck lately? Any ideas/advice?

Are you leaving wifi on because that will really suck the battery down? Also do you live in an area with bad signal? Put it in airplane mode and see if the battery still discharges as fast.

My r800x dies in 6 hours whether it's on airplane mode or not. I've re calibrated the battery like 5 times so far, and it just won't get better. I'm regretting moving to verizon to this. I should just get a sim card and go back to my HTC Inspire. I can leave the r800x in idle with the screen off, while in airplane mode and it will still die in 6 hours. It doesn't even last a whole day of work. Mine's also rooted. I need some serious help with this phone.

Turn off wifi.
If you have it on it will search for wifi networks all of the time (unless you're home and connected to your own wifi) and it will suck your battery dry.

I don't even use wifi. I don't have access to the router at home, and my data is turned off when I'm not using it.

Perhaps you have a bad battery? Maybe replacing that will solve the issue.

It could be. Every time I try to check my battery's health, no matter what app I use, or even if I do it from the service menu it reads at "unknown". One app says that my phone doesn't even have a battery stat service, or something along those lines. I was considering just buying one of those mugen batteries for my phone, considering that I brought the issue to verizon's attention, and they told me they were gonna send me a replacement battery, but I never got it. This was all about 2 months ago though.

wow, sounds bad. mine will last all day, its an r800x on 2.3.3 as well but i can use it like normal, play about a hour of games on it, talk on it a lot, use wifi and 3g and do some average surfing and it will last at least 24-30 hours...
i'm thinking it must be a bad battery as well

Im running 2.3.3 verizon from the FTF and my r800x would last almost 3days, and thats with texting/talking/surfing using 3g and playing a shyt load of sonic . I would replace the battery with a genuine Sony replacement, dont ever buy a ebay knock off ! Furthermore, I don't believe apps that check your battery health are accurate at all, so dont waste your time.
Best way to check (imo) - Before you charge it up, let it go to 0% and die. Boot recovery and wipe the battery stats, turn the phone on and charge to full. After its fully charged, let it sit 10-15 mins on charge. Then pull of the charge and use normally, if it still dies fast, replace the battery.

How do I go into recovery? My boot loader is still locked. As much as I want to unlock it to put abc xperia play rom on, I don't want to pay 25 bucks.

I swapped mine out for similar issues. The replacement doesn't have the same issues yet but I haven't put a single app on it. I can't say that adding apps caused it before because I remember it similarly not getting anywhere when charging while using. I also experienced it dropping while charging but it turned out to be a that the MTP device wasn't starting on the PC so it showed as plugged in and charging even though it wasn't (check the Device Manager). My Alienware M11x actually supports charging devices off that particular USB port when it is turned off so it was a bit hard to figure out when it seemed to charge some times and not others.

So I got a new battery. Battery life oz still terrible, phone still can't detect battery health.
Not sure why, but my battery voltages are higher than 3.6 :/

Hate to tell you but it sounds like your Play is defective.
The only way it would always get hot like that is if it was always running, that would be mainly driven by being in a REALLY bad service area that its always searching. I have a boatload of games etc on mine and my battery life varies from 2 days to 3/4 of a day depending where I am. Heck my battery life varies as to whether I leave my phone on my desk at work or on the shelf above me (lasts longer on the shelf).
But the fact you said that even in airplane mode it eats the battery, and a new battery didn't do the trick. I would say you got a bad one. Still under warranty I hope?

i'm not entirely sure. I got mine through verizon in august or september of this year. Not sure if Verizon would handle replacing it, since I didn't buy their extended warranty. I read somewhere that SE themselves can handle it since it's not a year old yet, but my phone is kinda required for work.

I've tried to resolve each issue individually and have done my best to see if I could make this one work but5 this is getting ridiculous. Yesterday was the last straw.
Friday I had problems with the gps. It showed me about 3 blocks from where I really was and could not figure out what direction I was traveling. At one point it actually showed that I was going in the opposite direction I was really driving. I decided to give it another shot yesterday on a drive down to the keys. I was on US1 in a convertible with the top down, clear view of the sky and driving about 60mph. The gps using both Maps and ATT navigator showed me about 300 or 400 yards off the road and in the freakin water!!!!
And the GPS kept losing a lock on the sats.
Then when I went to sleep I had about 75% battery left. I woke up 3 hours later and it was down to 15%. I had nothing running, made sure the gps was off and the apps were closed, juice defender was on, power save mode was on, and still the thing burned through 60% of the battery life in 3 hours.
Add that to my wifi disconnect/reconnect issues and the communication error when checking for software updates (tried through wifi and through 4G and same thing on both) and I think I'm going to take advantage of the exchange period and get a new phone next week. This is ridiculous.

lol....now this morning it's not even being recognized by my PC. I connected it so I could take some pictures I took last night off of it and it's not even being recognized.

Yeah you got a lemon just take the phone back to at&t if you got it from a company owned store and your within your 30 days then they will just swap it out for you if you got it from a 3rd party like a best buy or a amazon then obviously you would follow their return and exchange policy, oh and ditch juice defender it doesn't work well with Ics at all do a search on the topic and you will see ( gingerbread yes, Ics its a no go).

Seeing that you'd probably be factory resetting before returning I'd do that and just see if the issues continue. If so then return promptly. It could be any number of apps screwing with battery life and who knows juice def could be messing with GPS and wifi. Worth a shot. Factory reset and try some out without any apps added

Then when I went to sleep I had about 75% battery left. I woke up 3 hours later and it was down to 15%. I had nothing running, made sure the gps was off and the apps were closed, juice defender was on, power save mode was on, and still the thing burned through 60% of the battery life in 3 hours.
Add that to my wifi disconnect/reconnect issues and the communication error when checking for software updates (tried through wifi and through 4G and same thing on both) and I think I'm going to take advantage of the exchange period and get a new phone next week. This is ridiculous.

seeing how the majority of people arent having these issues at all id say its safe to say you just have a defective phone so you should just exchange it for a new one...

I bought it through ATT customer service by phone. I had an online chat with a tech last week about the battery and wifi issues and he suggested I take it to a store and they would exchange it for me. I tried to fix the issues so I wouldn't have to do that but now after the gps issue and last night's 60% in 3 hour while asleep problem, it's going back. Hopefully the store will exchange it without any problem.

I have Juice Defender Ultimate and Power Save Mode on and use my navigation almost every day and never had any issues. Sounds like a defective phone.

I really think those are apps that are past their prime. I wouldn't put any of that junk on a new phone.

I've had the wifi connect/disconnect issue a lot. Not sure if I should return or wait for a software update.

I thought the same but if you're a smartphone power user and want a full days use WITH 4 to 5 hours of screen time you need Juice Defender. I'm always on the go and started to leave the iPad at home because this phone with the right power saving apps can take the distance. I couldn't even do that with my Galaxy Note. Samsung S3 does.

I've had some bad battery days. Get something like SystemPanel that will let you see the historical cpu usage of system processes. I'll bet you a dollar that gsiff_daemon is running amok and killing your battery. A reboot will fix it but it will probably come back. I haven't found the pattern yet but I have noticed that the phone gets very warm, so I'm thinking that it may be somehow related to my signal strength.
