Seriously, my GF and I just got new phones and her EVO rocks my Epic. I don't get it, thought the EVO sucked juice compared to the Epic?
We both have juice defender, otherwise hers is stock with standard sense widgets. She checks facebook and texts all day, plays words with friends but that's it. I'm obsessing, rooted with setcpu conservative 100/1000, I have force uninstalled mediahub+drm services, do the airplane trick on reboot, brightness on auto, services off except wifi when browsing, etc.
My phone lasts maybe 12 hours, hers has gone 27 hours, lasts 18+ easy every day. I feel like if I even touch my phone I lose 10%. Snes games? Phone is done. I basically let it sit and it slowly dies, yet still ends up 90%+ display usage on the battery.
Sigh :-(

I'm on supernova:
Froze drm via titanium
Juice defender
Uv kernel
And I'm getting about 15 with moderate use..

I only got 8hours Until I got me, an extended battery Now I have mine on full bright and 4g,wifi,bluetooth,gps on full time. And 4 apps that update every 10 minutes 3 to 4 hours talk time and about 100+ text, get on the internet etc and the battery last about 12 hours
The biggest battery drainage from my phone came from 3g I live in area where 3g fluctuates allot which caused the battery drain
Have you ever thought of getting an extended battery?
Or you dont like the extra bulkiness
Otherwise can't you take it back and switch out for an evo?
I like my Epic like my women, slim and naked ;-)
I'm all stock, odined back to 2.1 before updating. I would suspect 3g due to my near-roaming status at home except for juice defender.
I can't calibrate my battery without clockwork (stock recovery now), think that would make a significant difference?

Watch for SyndicateROM Frozen, paired with the Twilight Zone kernel, in the next 24 hours. ACS team lead rjmjr69 got 30 hours of heavy use on the stock battery at 1.2ghz, and 16 hours extreme use (4G, WiFi, 3G, lots of SMS, MMS, email, web browsing, voice calls).
The benefits of a Lost Carrier...

That is a key (perhaps not the only) problem. Set your brightness to as low as you can stand it (8% is my number). Use as much black & red as possible (if an app has a night mode, use it.) Use an all black wallpaper. These actions will not cause any miracles but it will make a noticeable difference in battery life.
Worst case scenario (all white background at full brightness), the Epic screen consumes more than three times (yes, >3x) as much power as the EVO. Of course it looks marvelous doing it.
Hrm, thx mosttoys, ill try it. Though honestly most of the time it looks like it's around 0% anyways (which is honestly where I like it).

Little info for you guys. I'm sitting at 15% right now after 11 hours. I didn't touch my phone except for a 45min conference call and half hour workout using 4g+pandora. I realize this is likely average for Epic users. Except check out my GFs super Evo.
Light use, words with friends, texting, browsing (she is unemployed and I work from home so I can vouch that she has been on and off it), 59% afterf 12 hours...

Op so ur liking the evo more? Just curious because I am considering giving my epic back to sprint for an evo because this has to be one of the most unreliable phones I have owned.
Sent from my EB13 Samsung Epic
To be honest, the features that made me choose the epic over the evo have let me down. The keyboard misses and the screen sucks too much juice. My gf still hasn't plugged in her evo, its at 42% 15h20m.
But, I just installed the new syndicate rom and have high hopes. I don't want to jump the gun but my keyboard seems fixed and it's very quick. If all proves stable and I get comparable battery life (~15 hours would be fine) ill be more than happy with my epic. I would hate to lose this screen and am used to a hardware keyboard again. Just hate feeling like I need to plug it in every time I use it.
Oh and the call quality is the worst I have ever experienced but I don't know if it's the tinny speaker or sprint...maybe both (came from tmobile).
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
My epic was working good but today was the final breaking point for me. My phone is literally used in life a death situations (I am a paramedic if you couldn't guess by user name lol) and today I was on a call where I had to pull my battery 6 times to get it to dial out.
For me that is a deal breaker. I have learned to live with the keyboard by slowing down. I was debating on giving the rom you are using a try and seeing how that goes.
Sent from my EB13 Samsung Epic
This probably won't apply to you if it's saying the display is 90%, but two other battery drains that you didn't mention are "use wireless networks" for location and google talk, which auto signs in unless you change it in the talk app settings.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Why don't you try switching phones with her for a day or two and see if it's still the case. If you have horrible reception in an area, that can quickly drain the battery. There are so many variables that come into play and the second you two leave each other's sides, there is no way to compare the phones.
Thx for the suggestions. My location settings are off and I signed out of gtalk.
We have been right next to each other as she isn't working and I work from home. However, while she was bragging how much "better" her phone is she mentioned that she keeps gps and wireless on all day. This could have an impact considering the spotty service here, I just thought that juice defender would take care of it (should turn off 3g).
Btw, I had her not charge her phone. She is sitting at 16% 1d2h53m

Running some of the different ROM's will help out anyone looking for better battery. I recommend trying it out i was not very happy at first with the epic after all the hype then I gave in and started rooting and flashing and I love the phone now.

I have heard good things about juice defender, but i have a basic question. It says it turns of data during times, or when certain apps are running, etc...
Now, is the data only internet connection? Or will it interfere with my ability to get texts as well, because that would be a deal break for me.
Data is only the internet. The only things that you'll be missing out on are e-mails, which will still come through based on your schedule set up and when you have your screen on.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Heard so much about this app, tried it and took me only a few hours to remove it. When screen is off, it kills data, so basically apps like K-9 Mail that push my IMAP-idle email accounts and poll other accounts are basically impotent.
Plus the interface is confusing with a myriad of settings and no real hold on what settings stick or what not to set. I understand the concept of the app but it's not for me. With stock rom and mediahub-DRM-whatever-process killed off manually, i get by a work day with 50% left over on the train/bus-ride home, more than enough to do stuff before i get home.
I dave been using juicedefender for 3 weeks and it has maximized my batt an overall of 1.4x. The interface is confusing for those that don't spend time and learn it....its granular.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
U can set it to fcetch data on certain time intervals and u can get emails like that
Sent from my Epic 4G
I'm totally happy with it - I'm getting a rating of around 1.7x to 1.9x I know I can easily go a full day on one charge. The default setting of enabling data every 15 minutes is enough for me - I don't expect to get emails that are time sensitive to the point where a maximum of 15 minute delay would be detrimental. And I play with my phone a lot so I'm usually waking it up to respond to texts and it reenables data then anyway.
edit: I'm not using any battery tweaks or DRM disabling stuff. I'm stock except for rooting.
You guys and this juice defender. you use more battery with this because it is always running in the background. i get 45 hours without juice defender or a task killer. 1 day of battery pleasssseee i could get 2 if it was left in standby or more. no drm removed. root, cwm, galaxy rom and kernel di18 & blue minimalism
Oh well f me... If you're getting 45 hours that must mean I can get 45 hours because, you know, our geographic locations have the exact same coverage and we have the exact same phone usage patterns. Wow I feel like such an idiot. Thank you. Thank you for showing me that juice defender, instead of increasing my battery life by a good 6-8 hours, is actually killing it by 21 hours...

That's fine - always be skeptical especially when an update comes out to improve performance. I'm about to test the new kernel without this to see if it's worth it. But I know that keeping data off on my Hero tripled the battery life and since having this phone it's definitely increased it. But you can't tell me that I'm losing 21 hours of battery life by using it - and definitely don't try to make me feel like an idiot for using it either.

Im sure its not killing you by 21 hours. prolly your STOCK sync settings though. i only turn it on for a minute or two 3x a day. but go with out it i bet its prolly like 8 hours. think about it when your screen is off it is running. well that is another process that is draining battery unneccessarily. My entire phone is set up like on demand it does what i want it to when i want it to not when it wants too and all of this is acheived with stock settings and checking every app for update frequency settings. I use my phone a lot so i need it to be there.

So for argument's sake, and because I wanted an actual test, I installed your setup based on you're post earlier, andromeda rom, no juice, etc. gmail and facebook sync off. I even went in 4 times throughout the day to turn off running services. I got 11 hours and that was with charging while I was in a vehicle. So I would say about 9 to 10 hours really. TWS was only at 16%. Display was the biggest battery drain at 82%.
So now that I've done this, I can say without a doubt, for me personally, juice defender is really extending my battery life. While running juice defender, I take my phone off the charger at 6am typically and when I go to bed at midnight I still have over 20%. And if I don't plug my phone in, I can wake up at 6am the next day and the phone is still on.
You have a setup that works for you, and I have a setup that works for me. In my setup, juice defender gets me through a 24 hour period without charging. Now that I've got the andromeda rom and kernel, I'm going to test battery life with juice.

I have been dabating wether or not to flash a froyo rom and modem. I am currently using ee with phoenix kernel and loving the battery life i get out of it. I have searched the threads but not to much pertaining the the battery life of froyo as there is no kernels yet, most replies to battery life on froyo are a simple its good or i get good battery life. I Wa wondering what kind of battery life people are getting with froyo roms. battery life is the 1st on my list of importance so some with respectable performance would be nice to know so i could make my first froyo jump. Thanks in advance.
I've been on it for a few days now (DK17). I don't use any task manager, or juice defender or anything like that. I have a start-up manager (autoruns) and thats it. I unplugged my phone yesterday at 10:30am and 12 hours later I still had 40-45% remaining after some moderate use... angry birds, asphalt and web browsing mainly.
Hope that helps!
I just flashed 2.2 and used it all day at work for texting, calling, facebook and web browsing and after 9 hours at work i had just under 80% battery life left.
If you are after battery life, then stay on 2.1. I have 4 backup batteries and didn't mind going to 2.2, but I did have a considerable battery life decrease. I find myself changing batteries atleast once a day with these beta 2.2 releases. Recently I haven't noticed it as much, but I think that is due to my getting used to the routine of changing batts every 6-8 hours depending on use.
I really do enjoy the perks of 2.2 though. Flash player with Hulu is awesome, faster phone than 2.1, and the developers are doing a great job of getting some custom themes integrated right now, which makes it not only run great, but look awesome.

I don't know about you guys, but I am using ACS's Froyo build and my Epic has never had better battery life. By a large margin.
It seems the latest froyo release has been outstanding in terms of battery life. If you're looking for battery efficiency, definitely go with a froyo rom. If you're looking for performance, go with eclair. All in all however, froyo roms are fairly snappy especially considering they are at stock speeds. Can't wait for battery life increases once froyo roms get UV'd.
EDIT: on second thought, I'd have to recommend froyo either way. The improved web browser performance + flash as well as froyo gapps alone make the jump worth it. There's really no 'lag' to speak of on froyo roms... merely, the phone just seems faster on eclair switching between apps and loading/closing them.
I'm using epic experience 2.0(froyo) and my epic has never performed better. Especially gps locks in like 2-3 seconds even without wireless location check marked. Very fast and smooth. Probably just as fast if not faster than 2.1 overclocked to 1.2. For me it seems anyway. Way worth it in my opinion.

Honest to God I'll never understand comments such as these. If battery life is the most important thing then why the hell did you buy the most power hungry phone? You bought it for performance didn't you???? Performance and battery life are polar opposites. Much like horsepower and fuel economy.
Let me save you some suspense... you'll never get more than a day out of this phone. At least not if you actually use the damn thing. If you travel, take a car charger. If you are in the office, have a charger with you. If your job requires you to be away from power then bring an external battery. The phone lasts a normal work day between charges so install 2.2 and enjoy your phone for what it is... a powerhouse!
Btw, the battery life seems pretty good in comparison to stock 2.1.
Or u can buy one of the double or more life batteries for $100 that comes with a modified battery cover to fit the extended battery, then couple it with a kickass kernel (phoenix) and have the best of both worlds

Anyway,i also noticed how little juice the system resources now use up. I included a screenshot of the battery status screen.Hope this helps anyone with battery issues especially if your running the rom & kernal mentioned above, it worked 4 maybe it can work 4 u. P.S I have the screen set to 20% brightness, gps, wifi, blutooth, autosync all disabled.Only reason i mention this is because even with all these things disabled along with a few other,b4 installing cpu tuner my battery would still drain like crazy. Not that the phone is not fast enough. It's placebo effect where people "feel" that it needs to be faster when they overclock it at crazy speed. The G2 has already proved itself a speed monster, none of the android phones out there can top it right now. As for the battery life, I honestly don't notice any considerable improvement.

My girlfriend just got an Evo and it is 100% stock from the Sprint store. She's getting about 5 hours of use on a full charge. She only texts. She loses about 15% per hour.
Is this normal? Or will we have tl get another phone?
Thank you!

Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
It depends on how much she is texting... If she is like my niece (averaging a about 1000 txt a day! Really!) then that would be perfectly normal.
Look at the Battery Usage stats in Settings. What is using the most power. The screen can be the biggest battery user if it is on all the time (texting) and the brightness is up.
She unplugged her phone from a full charge this morning and let it sit for 45 min...and it lost 15%. I installed juicedefender which helped...believe it or not.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Instead of that, just use mobile data toggle since all she does is text. Text doesn't use data and data takes up a lotta battert
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
OP, i had the same problem when i first bought my EVO. It wasn't until i installed one of Toast's Kernels that i started getting decent battery life.
If it's EVO 4G,then it loses more power,as the 4G network needs more energy from the battery.I think it's normal.
---------- Post added at 03:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:28 PM ----------
Also, you could try to use an extend battery.I hope this helps!
If she just got it, it will take a few days for the rom to settle down and get to normal. Also, go to Settings-accounts and sync and turn off the stock syncing settings, for example, the stock phone has stocks, weather, and news syncing every hour, which most people dont use.
Forgot to say I turned off background syncing.
This am she was at 47% by noon after being unplugged for 4 hours. She was on wifi half the time and 3g the other half, all while texting conservatively.

*MOST* people who don't understand technology don't bother messing with settings, widgets, syncing apps, etc. My sister-in-law is a good example, same with your GF.
She got an EVO and was calling and txting me almost daily with questions about her phone and why battery life sucks ...
Anyway, she talks and texts a lot, and she had all default widgets up and auto syncing. Weather, news, facebook, 4G always on, never used WiFi, etc.
Sit down with your GF and go through the settings, Find out what she doesn't *need* as far as weather, news, junk and minimize the background processes. Turn screen brightness down, the basics.
If none of those things work, get her a bigger battery and/or a car charger.

This!
Also, though not sure if she or you wants to, but flashing a custom kernel like Freedom that allows underclocking and undervolting helps significantly, especially with the interactiveX governer that auto down clocks when the screen is off. Huge help there.
Install juice defender or you just turn off the auto sync or best thing to do is turn off background data. Having background data running will eat a lot up your battery.

I would root the phone install a good rom, and for a kernal i recommend chopsuyes. That kernal has great battery life.
Thanks for all the replies guys.
I have sat down with her before. Juicedefender is on. She said its getting better. She got 5 hours and she's at 50%. Not too bad...but not great.
I'm opposed to rooting her phone. She doesn't really use the phone as a toy like I do.

She doesn't have to use it as a toy. Rooting allows you to do more to get better battery life. I rooted and set up my girlfriends EVO and she loves it now.

I dunno man, just gingerbread itself appears to have fubared my phone. I wiped sd, wiped phone, factory reset, odined stock EC05 and took the forced EI22 update. Even still, android system chews through battery at >90%. A small thermonuclear power plant could not give my phone enough juice.
This coming after I tried multiple combinations of roms, kernels, uninstalling apps, and freezing data sucking apps that caused high wake locks....
I have tried stock gingerBreadEI22, ACS 3.5 - 5.5, ERA RC1 & 2, and Random Rom, with nubernel, different samurai kernels, and just whatever the chef cooked up. All the same, excessively high "system" battery usage.
Anyone is / was having the same issues and able to iron it out?
That reading for system is the norm. I get 24 hours with like 80%

I agree with Alkah0liK, but with my experience so far, if I don't use the phone all day it doesn't really use the battery, but as soon as I start talking, listen to music, or web surf it because a pig. I actually want to go back to 2.2 and use frozen rom again from ACS again. Can't figure out how yet though

Ok thanks, I was wondering what others were seeing.
I must be doing something it does not like. I can go a couple minutes with the screen on (at lowest setting mind you) and watch the battery drop 2-3% or more, almost dead battery within 10 - 12 hours even in /out of airplane mode...
Is there something really wonky with CWM? Funny thing is this started happening right about the time i switched over to v5. I am in the process of reverting back to wiping everything, odin to EC05, and going v3.1.01 again.
The battery life is better with gingerbread, but its not going to make your phone run 2-3 days on one battery life. Sorry my friend, those days are long gone. It would be very hard to find any cell phone that can run for longer than 24 hours these days.
No I get that, but I was able to use my phone for more than a couple hours a day before gingerbread. B4 the leaks I was running Viper Rom EXT4 with genocide at 1200 ondemand and still getting through the day. If I cut it back to 1000 and went easy I was only charging overnight to bump it back up to full.
I was even using RandomKing's and ERA's leak based roms with EH06 & EH17 without any issue. For me it really has been either the EI22 / CWM5 / latest roms.
Hey alky, I was also in your position. I tried every rom you tried, with minimal pleasing. My advice, if you can live without 4g, flash the current cyanogen and set the render effect on night mode. Enjoy a thorough battery life my friend. Nothing beats it thus far. Can't wait till we see cm9.

why would you want to use a 4G as if it were a 3G phone?

The biggest battery drain I have noticed is when there is little to no signal, the battery just seems to get sucked dry

Thanks! That was actually going to be my next try. I only get 4G when I am downtown, not very much as of late anyway.
FYI- I have found what I suspect as two possible culprits on ACS 5.1 & 5.5, and ERA RC1 & 2. According to better battery stats CM_VnoteService and *Sync for GTalk will run and run and run unless you open the applications and go through initial setup. Those two process will stay stopped so long as I leave them open / connected, once I close them - the partial wakelocks restart and run until you open the apps again (or just uninstall).
Even with my obsessively high amount of .acore launcher time and better batter stats application usage, they are still well below the "system" usage under the process dropdown.
It definately sips battery when not in use. Although I feel I get more screen on time with ACS ICS. I regularly have over 3 hours of screen on time with GB, I don't remember getting 3 hours on even SRF 1.2.

Yeah there's definitely battery drainage going on in gb. Or it could just be the colonel.
Idk but if you could visually see the battery drain as you're using it...there's a problem.
Actually its an ei22 problem...stock eh06 (yes...non-deodexed, just rooted. Stock kernal) got me running over 24 hours on a charge with 3 hours screen on.

Turn off your syncs. If there is no signal your syncs will keep trying and burn up your battery. Turning off data mode in low to no signal areas will conserve battery.

Did you get Kentucky Fried Chicken from the Colonel all over your phone again? LOL

Make sure upgrading to GB did not change any syncs. Also make sure new apps aren't loading into memory and sucking battery like Talk or Google +. Grab Memory Booster lite and pull up the task killer to see everything loading on your phone. The stock task killer sucks.
I recommend paying the $50 for battery and portable charger/storage unit. I'm a stock user who just had 41 hours with my new battery with 2hrs of screen time. I really like having two batteries too. No more charging cords connected to the phone...ever
Edit: the batt. I bought was a stock 1500mah batt. and charger kit from a sprint store. No regrets

Also, be sure to go to settings on your facebook if you have one and turn off notifications. That helped my battery life as well.

Still running 100% ERA Legendary v4.0.1 (with provided kernel) and I squeezed ~74 hours of pure standby time out of my stock battery.
Data Sync (FB every 6hrs, Weather every 2hrs, Google push)/GPS/Auto Brightness = on
TWS = 4%
Display Time = ~24mins (sent 3 texts and checked 1 voicemail)
100% on 3G
Had I turned off all synching, GPS and lowered brightness all the way, I would have probably gotten 4 days.
Battery life has heavily depended on the strength of signal for me as well. I moved recently and have been living in the basement while the renovations are going on upstairs. No airave (it is used at a different location) means little to no signal in a brick house due to Sprint's POS signal frequency. Although I've been flashing different kernels and maybe not allowing them to settle + undervoling a bit (very conservatively, will not OC over 1100). But it is true that since days I was on BB Tour, not one phone lasted a full day without an extended battery. I'm pretty much decided on VZW switch once Prime comes out - one of the factors is better expected power management of ICS and possibility of adding an extended battery without worrying about making the phone too bulky (given how thin it is).
Man that sucks, I've always had great battery with gingerbread. Right now I'm on RC2
