Mytouch 4g WIFI HOTSPOT - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone been charged for using the wifi hotspot app on the mytouch 4g. Officially tmo says they charge 10per, but I have also heard they don't charge if you don't ask and they don't know.
Do they have any way of knowing I'm using it, as long as I don't ask?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

I've used it a bunch of times and never paid extra.

I've been using it daily since 16 Nov and they still haven't charged me, but I also haven't gotten anywhere near our 5GB "cap".

Does Wifi/USB Tethering Charge You To Your Bill?

I know tmobile is supposed to charge you for these features, but with the Cyanogen mod does it bypass this restriction for free?
Pretty much in a nutshell, can I use the USB/Wifi tethering in Cyanogen 7 for free?
It doesnt matter if your on a rom. Im running eVil D:'s sense 3.0/3D rom and they still charge me.
They charge us noe because at&t started doing it

Technically, they should charge you for it. However i feel it's 5Gb of data that you pay for. Regardless of if it's on a phone, tablet or computer.
With that being said. T-Mobile may pick up what browser you are using, by using a sniffer. If they see you are using a full blower browser they may very well charge you.
but until they do, it's free.
The do charge you

Tethering via usb or wirelessly, no matter which way, you will not get charged. I been tethering since I got the phone and never been charged a dime.

That statement is correct. T-mobile won't do like AT&T has been doing. If T-mobile catches it then the tethering gets blocked and you have to add the feature to get it working again but that's kind of hit or miss and if you don't use it much then the system might no ever flag your account.
Thanks for all the replies! I think I understand how this works now
Pretty much if I were going to be charged, it would notify me. Thanks everyone.

The only accounts that can have all you can eat at full speeds would be employee plans. Doesn't matter if you're rooted or not, because they've caught and stopped quite a few lines with rooted w/custom ROMs from tethering. Your account just hasn't been flagged.
I haven't been charged. If you ask they will say you have to add the feature at a charge. If you don't ask, they don't charge. T-mobile tends to be generous but I don't know if its intentional. I know they have holes in their system that let people get away with stuff.

How do you know you're getting charged for tethering? Tmobile can't charge you for tethering without your consent. Only thing they can do is block you from using their tethering service since tethering is and actual paid service from tmobile.
never been charged. even before i rooted my mytouch i tried the stock one for a WHILE. no extra charges at all. i believe ur only charged if u request a tether package. im not sure how/why the other user is being charged at all unless they have a tether package and not know it . . . my dad currently has the mytouch slide (3G) and recently got the froyo update and he's tethering with no issues. when i rooted his phone and installed wireless tether he STILL wasnt being charged.
I have been tethering for over a year and not been charged. I don't know if its significant but my rate plan is from before they charged for the service.
They will depending on your plan. My plan gives me free tethering so I can't complain.
I don't see how anyone is getting charged for tethering unless they gave tmo permission to. Even my brother that's on flexpay doesn't get charged for tethering..

Tmobile and the damn data speed throttling

For the first time ever I hit 2gb in one month and then tmobile throttled my speed down to something between edge and 3g...
just for a tip to anyone out there, if you have wifi at home then use wifi while you are at home. I am only throttled from 17th-19th (new billing cycle) but it sucks bad...
That's a bummer. I'm stoked that I have Wi-Fi at home AND work that I tap into. I rarely have to use my data so I don't have that fear of going over. I hope that I never get into a situation where this happens.

I also had the displeasure of being throttled last month. I make it a point to turn on WiFi when I'm at home so that it doesn't happen again. This sucks, considering a lot of apps are using large amounts of data these days. :/
Its only a 2 gig limit for newer customers right? Us oldie customers still get up to 5 I hope!
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Just an idea for those who haven't considered, you can use apps like Tasker or AutomateIt (free) to automatically turn on wifi when at home using location-based triggers and things like that.
u guys think u had it bad,, i used two gigs of data withing a week of my bill cuz i had to tether to my laptop. so im stuck with this like edge **** for the rest of the month...
Your 2 gig cap is the data feature you have, you can upgrade it to a 5 gig cap if you pay $10 more a month, or you could go with the outrageous 10gig cap for an extra $40 a month on top of what your paying now, wifi is your best bet. Throttled speeds are around 50-100kbps, but hey it beats overages any day

Okay guys I know getting throttled sucks but during this and last month I've had unlimited data! I mean truly unlimited no cap! I've have passed the 5Gb cap and have gotten the infamous text telling me my speed will be slowed. I've been experiencing this since I updated the leaked gingy from t-mobile I don't know if that's the case of my fortunate situation. Last month I used 10.2Gb(lol double checked dang that's a lot!) and right now I'm at 5.5Gb.I'm still at full speed with 18 or so days left on my billing cycle. Is anyone else experiencing this?

If your using the leaked gingerbread, then you are also on the 04.30 radio, which is the thing keeping you from being throttled. This has been confirmed by me and various other users on different roms, as far as I know it's the only radio that can defeat throttling.... somehow. But hey I'll take it

I wouldn't expect it to last too much longer, lol. But hey it works right now so get it while you can!
Edit: I would first test this toward the end of your billing cycle, there are scattered reports that this doesn't work for some people.
Sent from my G2 w/ meXdroidMod PreGhostChilli
There are people on all different radios that get the throttle text and never get throttled. It really seems like a roll of the dice no matter what radio your on now that you said the .30 doesn't work for all people. All the other radios work for some and not for others as far as throttling goes also.

Oh no, I don't like reading this. I just joined Tmobile because their data plans are cheap and I THOUGHT they had unlimited 3G. I only bought 200MB of 4G thinking I'd be on semi decent 3G but now I'm screwed. Queue buyer's remorse...

Throttle msg

I don't know if anyone else is getting this.. but I was just throttled yesterday, and I got the msg twice.. saying I have gone over 5gb of data and am now throttled for the reminder of the cycle. Today I get the msg again.. does anyone have an idea what's going on..ooh I do have the Throttle Reset apk installed and used it.. funny I had installed in from the begining of cycle and hope I didn't get throttled but no luck.. now I dialed #932# and noticed that the data reading was different from my T-Mobile account.

I've never seen that message before, i've had tmo for quite some time and even went over 5GB before. I would turn on 2G, for a few moments, then return to 3G/4G, and speeds should be fine.
I just get upset when I hear you guys say I don't get throttled or when I get throttled I get a decent speed.. now am in new York city. I don't know where you guys are from but its just frustrating to see others get throttled to decent speed and others not getting throttled.. Damn feel like am missing out.. when I get throttled the most I get when I run speed test is 60kbs. Either from edge to 4g..as gas as network modes goes, I use 2g when am running Pandora, when surfing and downloading I use 4g.

I'm in nyc too, but i've been going over since I first got my G1, do you have the premium data or the classic one? And I think they only throttle some people, b/c I would tether w/ my laptop and they didn't do anything.

Now am told by T-Mobile that throttled speed is affected by your location.. I guess if the towers ain't that crowded you might be in luck..
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
Everyone gets throttled no matter who you are or where you live. Some get lucky and don't get throttled, some probably do not even use their web as much to go over the cap to get throttled or some just don't notice. I've gotten away without getting throttled after going over my gb cap a few times.
No matter what they are always going to get you.
