I don't know if anyone else is getting this.. but I was just throttled yesterday, and I got the msg twice.. saying I have gone over 5gb of data and am now throttled for the reminder of the cycle. Today I get the msg again.. does anyone have an idea what's going on..ooh I do have the Throttle Reset apk installed and used it.. funny I had installed in from the begining of cycle and hope I didn't get throttled but no luck.. now I dialed #932# and noticed that the data reading was different from my T-Mobile account.

I've never seen that message before, i've had tmo for quite some time and even went over 5GB before. I would turn on 2G, for a few moments, then return to 3G/4G, and speeds should be fine.
I just get upset when I hear you guys say I don't get throttled or when I get throttled I get a decent speed.. now am in new York city. I don't know where you guys are from but its just frustrating to see others get throttled to decent speed and others not getting throttled.. Damn feel like am missing out.. when I get throttled the most I get when I run speed test is 60kbs. Either from edge to 4g..as gas as network modes goes, I use 2g when am running Pandora, when surfing and downloading I use 4g.

I'm in nyc too, but i've been going over since I first got my G1, do you have the premium data or the classic one? And I think they only throttle some people, b/c I would tether w/ my laptop and they didn't do anything.
Yes. The 5gb data plan...this is bull****..msg to you T-Mobile guy(those who work for t-mobile) who are here(Getting all our secrets and sharing it to tmobile). I'll choke you.. lol just kidding.

Now am told by T-Mobile that throttled speed is affected by your location.. I guess if the towers ain't that crowded you might be in luck..
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
Everyone gets throttled no matter who you are or where you live. Some get lucky and don't get throttled, some probably do not even use their web as much to go over the cap to get throttled or some just don't notice. I've gotten away without getting throttled after going over my gb cap a few times.
No matter what they are always going to get you.

That isn't entirely true. There is data throttling built into the system of the phone. You might want to check out the G2 forums for more info about the throttling.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Wrong. The throttling happens at the network end. The phone itself has nothing to do with it.

Again, check the G2/DZ forum. There is a thread dedicated to overriding the data throttling implementation built into the phone. The very mod the OP is referring to. The thread is a guide to defeat data throttling.

I can tell you for a fact that no matter what you do on the phone, if you are throttled on the network, you will still be limited to edge speeds.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I agree... As I am also a call center rep that had been there for over 4 years.
In your profile we have your IMEI number on file that you have in your sim card in ... Every bit of a data you use it tracked by the system .. Which is confirmed by the towers from both your IMEI and sim card.
There is nothing you can do to change the IMEI that your phone sends out to the towers to your account.. Or the sim card number that is tired to your number. Then when you hit that limit you are done for the rest of the bill cycle.
The other guy is right ... Can't be changed by us in the system .. Its hard coded in the system.

You are EXACTLY correct. As a field tech I have tested with a customer that has a webconnect account and a Rocket data stick. The problem was that he was throttled back still but his account had just reset. So naturally they sent me to investigate slow speeds at his address. After testing everything was working fine so I called him and met him at his address. We put my data SIM card in his data device and everything worked fine. I then put his SIM card in my data device and it was throttled.
There was an error with his account where it wasn't reset like it should have been. We resolved it and he was back to 7+Mbps.
The moral of the story kids is, your account is throttled based on your account and not your device.
P.S. I don't believe this belongs in development but with the holidays the forum be not be monitored as much. Next time please post questions in the Q & A section! Thanks.
how much data do you have to use to get throttled? I have used roughly 750mb of data on my phone this month..
5gb
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
It is interesting to note that there is a huge section of people are defeating throttling specifically on tmobile by removing throttling services from the phone........and several TMO reps say it isn't possible. I wonder who is right?
I can confirm that these reps are WRONG. I have a little trick that unthrottles my data, on tmo, until I reboot or drop service.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Exactly my point. It is confirmed by multiple people that throttling can be defeated on theses phones. I'm not saying that our IMEI isn't being tracked, just that it has been confirmed that throttling can be defeated.
On another note, gr8gorilla, thanks for the kernels, I can't seem to run anything other than pure stock except for your kernels. Gonna flash in 1.0 later today, running 0.5 and it works pretty well.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Service reps are only half wrong...
The thread dedicated to this is correct...
Both the people working at T-Mo and the Phones end itself control throttling...
The reps only have so much control over the data services on a phone...
I actually saw a few posts on that thread where people said they were at 2-3mbps (just one example) while throttled and seeing an increase after 'defeating' it. 2-3mbps isnt throttled speeds. When you get throttled, you are limited to EDGE only. Plus lots of people think they are throttled when they get the text about it. The fact is, even though you always get the text at 5gb, you don't always actually get throttled at that point necessarily. Although I'm sure there are better examples than these out there and I'm definitely willing to or this to the test myself hehe.

On two of my lines on my family plan, we've been throttled down to EDGE speed after exceeding 5GB. On those occasions, it would only last a day even though we still had about 2 weeks before the next billing cycle.
It would be great to have the throttling files removed, any devs think its possible?

I'm pretty sure if you have a grandfathered data plan before they began throttling at 5gb you don't have a cap at all. How long have you had your data plan?
Edit: I'm pretty sure it was a T-Mobile CSR that said in here there is a checkbox on your account for throttled or not and if you had a plan before they began throttling at 5gb they didn't throttle you.
No telling, I've been with tmo since the powertel days. Im paying 20.00 for "unlimited android web" on the 3000 minute promo plan.

That's a bummer. I'm stoked that I have Wi-Fi at home AND work that I tap into. I rarely have to use my data so I don't have that fear of going over. I hope that I never get into a situation where this happens.

I also had the displeasure of being throttled last month. I make it a point to turn on WiFi when I'm at home so that it doesn't happen again. This sucks, considering a lot of apps are using large amounts of data these days. :/
Its only a 2 gig limit for newer customers right? Us oldie customers still get up to 5 I hope!

Just an idea for those who haven't considered, you can use apps like Tasker or AutomateIt (free) to automatically turn on wifi when at home using location-based triggers and things like that.
u guys think u had it bad,, i used two gigs of data withing a week of my bill cuz i had to tether to my laptop. so im stuck with this like edge **** for the rest of the month...
Your 2 gig cap is the data feature you have, you can upgrade it to a 5 gig cap if you pay $10 more a month, or you could go with the outrageous 10gig cap for an extra $40 a month on top of what your paying now, wifi is your best bet. Throttled speeds are around 50-100kbps, but hey it beats overages any day

There are people on all different radios that get the throttle text and never get throttled. It really seems like a roll of the dice no matter what radio your on now that you said the .30 doesn't work for all people. All the other radios work for some and not for others as far as throttling goes also.

tell them that u are having problem with data that ur phone drops calls and u don't get txt, the update profile on ur phone does nothing but update the phone, when u flash difference roms to ur phone, ur data gets wak. so just tell them to reset ur data

yea i just tried that, three different reps had no idea what "reset your data" meant. Ive been through every single fix they can do, I've never once heard of "resetting your data"...
when u call *2 the operator ask you if you have data problems. press 4 with problem can't receive or send txt, that that take u to data support and just tell them that u can't receive text or send txt. then they will ask u, to take our battery out. I thought they were throwing me, but they don't do that... trust me it works here's another picture of my test. results don't lie
It will slow down again an again. It's no different then rebooting a PC.
A fresh boot will be faster the bog down later on. You can always turn off your mobile network on your phone and wait ten minutes then turn it back on and you will get the same results.
Plus there is always ##3282# if you have your phones MSL code and you can do what they did.
I have read 1000 of thing to do to get fast speed even use the Verizon prl 0001, but all that got me was a bill 250 buck and my bill is normally 72.18 month every month...I test it with my girl friends evo 4g in the same place and her phone we always 10x faster then mine "hers is not rooted" until I got this done. here is a picture of before and after

Thanks OP but this is not really a fix but a mere band aid. That has been done for quite some time now going back to my windows mobile days. As another member has mentioned it might be good for a while but it will go back. Hopefully for you it does not and you get lucky and have great speeds. Personally my data has been refreshed at least a half dozen times.... Thanks for your input and good luck.
Also like previously mentioned you can try the ##3282# method its the same effect...
I hope, but like I stated before. that wouldnt work. I have try everything "##3282# and hit restore and commit and reboot. my girl friends evo is not rooted and she would get 10x faster 3g then my rooted evo 4g. everytime i use a different rom my 3g gets really slow.
