Does Wifi/USB Tethering Charge You To Your Bill? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know tmobile is supposed to charge you for these features, but with the Cyanogen mod does it bypass this restriction for free?
Pretty much in a nutshell, can I use the USB/Wifi tethering in Cyanogen 7 for free?

It doesnt matter if your on a rom. Im running eVil D:'s sense 3.0/3D rom and they still charge me.
They charge us noe because at&t started doing it

Technically, they should charge you for it. However i feel it's 5Gb of data that you pay for. Regardless of if it's on a phone, tablet or computer.
With that being said. T-Mobile may pick up what browser you are using, by using a sniffer. If they see you are using a full blower browser they may very well charge you.
but until they do, it's free.

The do charge you

i teather all the time and never get charged. I'm on unlimited datta plantho so not sure if this makes a diff

Tethering via usb or wirelessly, no matter which way, you will not get charged. I been tethering since I got the phone and never been charged a dime.

That statement is correct. T-mobile won't do like AT&T has been doing. If T-mobile catches it then the tethering gets blocked and you have to add the feature to get it working again but that's kind of hit or miss and if you don't use it much then the system might no ever flag your account.

Thanks for all the replies! I think I understand how this works now
Pretty much if I were going to be charged, it would notify me. Thanks everyone.

The only accounts that can have all you can eat at full speeds would be employee plans. Doesn't matter if you're rooted or not, because they've caught and stopped quite a few lines with rooted w/custom ROMs from tethering. Your account just hasn't been flagged.

I haven't been charged. If you ask they will say you have to add the feature at a charge. If you don't ask, they don't charge. T-mobile tends to be generous but I don't know if its intentional. I know they have holes in their system that let people get away with stuff.

How do you know you're getting charged for tethering? Tmobile can't charge you for tethering without your consent. Only thing they can do is block you from using their tethering service since tethering is and actual paid service from tmobile.

never been charged. even before i rooted my mytouch i tried the stock one for a WHILE. no extra charges at all. i believe ur only charged if u request a tether package. im not sure how/why the other user is being charged at all unless they have a tether package and not know it . . . my dad currently has the mytouch slide (3G) and recently got the froyo update and he's tethering with no issues. when i rooted his phone and installed wireless tether he STILL wasnt being charged.

I have been tethering for over a year and not been charged. I don't know if its significant but my rate plan is from before they charged for the service.

They will depending on your plan. My plan gives me free tethering so I can't complain.

I don't see how anyone is getting charged for tethering unless they gave tmo permission to. Even my brother that's on flexpay doesn't get charged for tethering..

[q] wifi tethering and root access

Ok Guys my brother just got his mytouch 4G and he over heard that Tmobile charges 14.99 a month for tethering so I thought for him to avoid that problem he would have to gain root access. So my question is this true or not ????????

Sounds right to me. You can't tether for free until you do so as far as I know.
Just looking into how to do this as I know someone who just got one and would love to have that ability for free.
My phone isn't rooted yet (just got a replacement) and I tethered my netbook using the stock wifi hotspot app that came with the phone.
It let me tether just fine without any problems. When I went to T-Mo's website, it shows up as regular data usage.

Free...for now. Sooner or later (likely the former) TMob will start charging as they've already released details on the $14.99 tethering/hotspot plan.
The alternative is to root and use and use another wifi hotspot app (e.g. the Android wifi tethering app).
T mobile rep charged me then called customer and had them remove the extra monthly charge.

They will though. I asked the store and the 800 #. 14.99 they said on top of the data plan.... Screw that. I am rooted and fully plan to skip that $14.99

Mytouch 4g WIFI HOTSPOT

Has anyone been charged for using the wifi hotspot app on the mytouch 4g. Officially tmo says they charge 10per, but I have also heard they don't charge if you don't ask and they don't know.
Do they have any way of knowing I'm using it, as long as I don't ask?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I've used it a bunch of times and never paid extra.
I've been using it daily since 16 Nov and they still haven't charged me, but I also haven't gotten anywhere near our 5GB "cap".

Sprint tethering

Being that there is so many movie apps like Netflix and HBO go, can sprint tell if your tethering . Is the data usage the same if I was watching Netflix on my phone vs tethering Netflix to my ipad?

OP, I've tried to get a straight answer to the same question before with no luck.... The question isn't whether data is unlimited or not (it is, on both 3g and 4g, we all know that), it's whether Sprint can tell a difference in the type of data the Netflix app uses on the phone vs. tethering Netflix on a computer.
I honestly don't know the answer, but my hunch is that they CAN tell the difference, but they haven't busted anybody on it yet. I'm sure navigating the Netflix website on your computer looks different than using the app on your phone because the Netflix app doesn't load all the same things as the website.
I think the crux of the question is whether Sprint can tell the difference between loading an identical website on the phone's browser vs. on a tethered computer.
Does anybody actually know?
Edit: Noticed that you were specifically asking about tethering to an iPad. I think there is probably a difference in the user agent, but the data itself probably looks the same.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Well, I think the issue to be considered is, is tethering allowed at all under our TOS (I honestly can't remember)? Because I'm not sure, but I believe you are allowed to USB tether your evo; they just don't want you to use it as a wireless hotspot unless you pay the extra $30. So, can they tell if you're watching something on your Evo, or tethering to another device, possibly...but can they tell if you're watching on another device that's tethered via USB or wireless? I would think not. But I don't know, just trying to give some food for thought.
Being a sprint Rep in business care... on our end we cant see anything like this. To us, data is data. The only thing we differentiate with is on or off network (roaming)
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Your TOS does not allow any type of tether unless you pay for the tethering plan, wired and wireless.
Just as a suggestion, don't use your tether to download illegal content. If caught, double whammy, violating TOS and copyright laws.

Only difference they're going to see is if you're roaming/not roaming.

[Rant] T-mobile: Stop double charging us.

This is a bit of a rant for T-mobile about their hotspot charges. It is unbelievable that such an originally "for the man" kind of company would jump on this bandwagon. I dont care if other carriers are charging for hotspot use, its not fair for them to do it and it is not fair for you either. I have been with T-mobile since the Voicestream days of Jamie Lee Curtis. I had the 3000min plan for many years and rarely used half that most of the time; I just wanted it in case I needed it. This is not the same case with Hotspot. I will not pay an additional charge to use something I already pay for, in a different way. I am not causing any additional network traffic by using a Laptop, than I would on my phone. If anything, I may be enticed to upgrade my data plan because I would be using much more data with the addition of my Laptop.
This type of behavior severely annoys us loyal customers who have stuck with you from the beginning. I hope you will feel the pressure when Verizon launches their new plans on 6-28-12 that INCLUDES FREE hotspot. It may be more expensive, but after all the additional charges are added on a T-mobile plan, it comes down to how much more are you willing to pay for better network coverage.
In closing, I love you T-mobile, we have had many good years with many FREE phones(I love my FREE S2), but, dont make me file for a divorce. /rant
I am well aware of how to get around this. So, if we can, why charge for it? Please feel free to add to this, trolls and all, post it up!
There's a plethora of tethering apps that are un detectable so you don't get charged. especially when you freeze tethering manager..

I don't think any of the apps are undetectable. Besides the native hotspot manager which directly prevents it, T-Mobile is detecting tethering by checking user agents of browser requests, and I haven't seen any of the apps add hiding the user agent to avoid this.

I find it interesting that I can use Dolphin browser in desktop mode, and there is no problem. Maybe because its dolphin? Also, I dont have a problem tethering on my S2 with Digital.Warefare 2.7 while using a laptop on Chrome. Seems ICS has some changes on the S2 because there are people reporting eventually being directed to the Tmo signup site after tethering for a bit.

Carriers have a history of charging for anything that they can. The fact that you're so mad about it *now* is hilarious.
It's very easy to get around, so stop whining about it.

Tethering

I received a letter from Sprint yesterday regarding my tethering usage haha. Anyways, they warned if I continue to do it I will be dropped. My question is do all the 3rd party tethering apps (I use the hot spot hack) show my usage as tethering as well?

If they drop me my S4 is given a "bad esn" right? I wonder if I pay an eft if they drop me. I don't care too much anymore as with my career change I get NO service where I go. Ha, I barely get service in normal locations. I've only seen lte in places you wouldn't expect it. I still want the Nexus 5 and will probably do straight talk or that T-mo prepay.

Mk2, stock. It's under settings/connections/data usage. What's 4G? Hahaha! Or this lte?? Sounds made up ? it was 3g tethering. I just tether my laptop and watch Netflix and do a lil bill paying and such. Maybe with MK2 and the knox plague sprint has a lil spy ware in there? They've never messed with me before and I've had 11gb+ of data usage before..

Well, you got caught! You were shoplifting from Sprint and they caught you. Either stop stealing or get cut off. It amazes me sometimes that people are surprised when they get caught. 8GB+ a month on 3G, its obvious that you are tethering. Do I tether, hell yes! But if Sprint caught me, I would stop tethering or pay for the service. With their new lifetime data plans they include 5gb of tethering in one of their plans for cheaper than any other provider. They caught you because of the desktop Netflix sever you were connected to opposed to the mobile Netflix server.
It's kind of funny how xda comes down hard on people that post links to warez or movie/music bootleg sites but they turn a blind eye to stealing from Sprint with hacked tethering. Anyway, good luck with Sprint and keeping your account.

Thanks, although I am pretty aware I was caught. I have used mass amounts of data before without tethering. Keeping Sprint won't be a problem as I haven't been tethering. I am not surprised at getting caught, it isn't like I'm crying about the audacity of this company telling me how I can/can't use my unlimited data. I was only asking if anyone knew if a 3rd party app shows the usage as data or tethering still. I will look into this plan you mentioned though.
