WIFI Only - Galaxy Tab General

Im curious on the Galaxy Tab do you have to have a cell phone contract? or can it be used strictly through wifi access , I dont really need a giant phone , I already have Samsung Focus , but I would like to try out this tablet !

It doesn't look like you live in the US as we could get tablet without contract from various providers. I would imagine it's the same in Canada. You might have to pay higher than the contracted's price.
To verify, the tablet works in both mode: 3G or Wifi.
Your question probably meant to be: Why Samsung doesn't release a Wifi only version so I don't have to pay extra for it? All current NA tablets have both Wifi & 3G and at least in US you do not have to have a cell phone contract to use the device.

Cool , well I was just wondering as I have frequent stays in the US! I was just wondering, because it sounds like the cell companies are the ones selling these devices , I know you can get them at Best Buy, but can I just buy one off the shelf and not be associated with Verizon/tmobile/sprint/att, because that would be a big hit for me, wifi goes along way , I dont really care about 3g , but wifi can use damn near anywhere (free)!
I like the design as well, I also like the fact that the rom can be changed out, I would be curious if ,gingerbread worked on it as well , or even wp7 ? I am on list for the beta Chrome OS tab , wish that would come so I can see how it looks!

Iiwy i would wait. Galaxy2 is comming out soon. Also be careful w which tab u will buy in us as they are carrier specific. Only at&t & tmob tabs are customized friendly (replacable rom)

help me decide on what to do please

i am currently wondering what should i do with my hd2 since rumors are saying it will hit t mobile this spring. should i sell my international edition and get the t mobile us hd2 that supports 3g or should i just keep the current international one with no 3g supprt. I'm not a 3g user at the moment but having support for 3g would be nice if i decide to get it. is there anything special i can do with t mobile where i can trade my phone in for theirs?thanks in advance
As you have seen, most of the devices from HTC that go on the US market are branded and even the design is changed. I hate that stuff. The default design HTC makes is great and that's why i buy products from them.
I would never buy an ugly version. You have to agree that the US version don't become prettier.
If you are not a 3G user you should be fine.
oic i heard rumors that t mobile might stop changing the looks after the tp2 but i guess not thanx for the tip, and yes they come quite ugly for t mobile but look okay for ATT
I noticed that too. Att's versions are more ok.

Droid Pro on Virgin / T-Mobile UK 3G?

Hi all,
I am about to import an activated (with included Verizon unlock code) Droid Pro into the UK so all the essential bases should be covered. However, I saw that some people were having real problems with getting 3G reception on their Droid Pros in Europe. Does anybody have any experiences about using the Droid Pro in the UK, specifically on Virgin and/or T-Mobile??
Many thanks!

Mine has been fine. I used it for a while on T-Mobile, and I was able to pick up 3G or HSPA pretty much everywhere. I'm on 3 now, but I'm thinking about going back to T-Mobile because the 3 signal seems to cut out randomly, and I can't seem to access the internet very much. I went with 3 because they're the only ones that let you use up to 1GB, but what's the point, if you can't access it anyway?
Haha, yes very true. Check out Virgin! I am on a 15GBP/month plan with 500mins, unlimited texts and 1gb of internet, they use T-Mobile's lines thats why I was asking... Best deal I have found around so far! Oh and I should say its a pay-monthly contract.
Thanks so much for the quick reply, I will proceed to actually buying it... would you recommend it generally?

I don't really need that many minutes, so I've just been paying 10GBP. I've realized that I don't use cellular internet that much because my life pretty much consists of being at my flat, or being at school, and I have WiFi at both places. I just need a supplement on the rare occasions that I'm somewhere else, so 500MB should get me by.
I was kind of shocked to find out that internet here is so limited. I always thought Europe was way ahead of the U.S. in terms of speed and bandwidth.
Anyway, as far as the phone goes, I love mine. My favorite phone that I used back home was a Treo, and I fell in love with the front-facing keyboard. Unfortunately they don't have an Android phone like that that I can use on my network back home yet, but as soon as I realized I was going to be here for most of the year, I picked up a Droid Pro, and I've never regretted it. It's not perfect (read about the random reboots), but it's stable for the most part, and the wonderful form factor makes up for any minor faults.
Really? I feel that the internet here was pretty nice... I was using an HTC Touch Diamond2 on T-Mobile US last year and it just wouldnt switch into 3G due to band indifferences. It works on the EU networks like a charm though.. well it did I should say, HTC has no decided to charge me 220GBP to fix Newton rings on the touch screen which should be covered under warranty! I am very very annoyed with them; I was a loyal HTC customer for years.
Well not anymore, I ordered the Droid Pro activated and unlocked off Ebay for about 180GBP, your loss HTC. Have a look in my other thread by the way, Motorola just announced a EU version of the Droid Pro - untouched hardware! I would be very very interested in the ROM it comes with ... ) Might just help you with your reception on 3!

Have you set up the APN properly? I know I had to set up the APN when I switched to 3. I've never tried O2, so I don't know for sure, but that's the only guess that I've got.
Try the APN settings in this post:

Or, you can try entering your number on their website and seeing if they provide any suggestions for the settings:

I would also welcome an untouched ROM - I think with imported phones from the states the lock on the band limits the connection we get here in the UK with our unlocked phones.
My Droid Pro arrived today and I can confirm that it picks up 3G like a charm on the T-Mobile/Virgin UK lines. Reception is fairly good too, was never really strong where I live anyways but still quite speedy. So far now problems with any cut-outs, freezing etc... really stable. Did an OTA update as soon as I turned it on.
The seller fortunately supplied me with the original unlock code by verizon and it was pretty much just popping my card in, entering the code and boom it was ready to go.
Make sure when you want to import a Droid Pro into Europe:
* the seller is in good standing with Verizon
* the phone is not listed as having a bad ESN (impossible to activate!)
* asking the seller to activate it for you before it ships (so you can actually unlock it!)
* in my case, my seller was even kind enough to phone up Verizon for an unlock code, saves u the work of buying one.
Also, as in recent developments, Verizon seems to change the unlock codes OTA that makes it sometimes completey impossible to unlock it with one that u got of the internet, just warning you to consider taking the safe way!
The ESN doesn't matter so much if you're never going to go to the U.S. and use it, but a clean ESN is always better.
It really does suck that Verizon started doing the OTA code change thing. I'm glad I got mine and unlocked it before that started happening.
Yea but if the droid pro has a bad ESN means u can never get it activated, not even on Verizon in the US... I have seen some ways to get around it, but it doesnt really seem proven yet how reliable that is, e.g after an OTA update? Regardless, to have the least trouble getting it over here, recommendation should be to go for an activated w/ orignial verizon unlock code.
Thinking of selling mine
I may be getting a company phone so I might be selling mine.
I'm based in the UK.
Phone is unlocked and comes with extended battery, screen protectors, box etc, and is in EXCELLENT condition.
Asking £300 - meet in person preferred. Based in Birmingham, UK.
Please get in touch if you're interested.
Hi,
I have a Droid Pro in the UK on T-mobile and i find that although i get signal and 3G android only ever displays 1bar signal but under system prefs the signal is strong, apps sometimes say network error. over at the droid forums they have noticed this to be an issue with no fix.
Thanks

If you could do it all over again, what carriers Galaxy tablet would you buy

I have the Verizon one, It works well but that lack of development and inability of it to ever make calls has me ready to move on from it and get a GSM version. Im a bit confused as to which one to get. It seems as if the Att one is the way to go but I dont want to make another $500 mistake. So which one woud you get and why?
Please advise
AT&T version is the USA is the most flexiblr and best if you want to flash and customize because it has the same radio as most Euro versions.

w4, have you done any custom stuff??
The Bell and Rogers Galaxy Tabs are good too since they're the same as the AT&T Tabs.
I have the Bell Tab. No issues at all.
I want to be able to use it as a phone, I see ATT is what is needed but just going in to the ATT store and purchasing a tablet with a month to month plan will I get all I need, after the mods here of course??

if you already have an att phone with voice and data, then yes. Just insert your current sim card.
I'd stick with the verizon one because it works everywhere. Good luck getting anything from AT&T to work in the southeast, for example. AT&T is awful where I live and, in fact, when my AT&T contract is up this summer I will most likely ditch them and the AT&T iPhone for Verizon and their iPhone. Which is another reason I'd stick with Verizon...already have a phone and couldn't care less about making voice calls with a tablet, especially when there are so many options that work just fine on the tablet as it is.

guess it depends on where you live. verizon is **** here, att is fantastic.
There are ways to use the Verizon tab as a phone...voip and/or sip. Using skype myself, but slightly unhappy with the way that the skype app goes to sleep and doesn't recieve incoming calls after a while.

Tab 7.7 AT&T LTE version

We all saw the Verizon version will soon be on sale but has anyway read anything about a possible AT&T version? I kind of a recall a while back some article saying it went through FCC with AT&T frequencies but it may have been confused with the Galaxy Plus...

While I agree that you should always buy an unlocked phone if possible, if he wants ATT LTE (4G) he's kinda stuck with buying it from them.

True... For now... At least until manufacturers start making unlocked multi-band LTE devices.
Besides, with LTE not being unlimited, it's kinda pointless at this stage. Let the technology (and rate plans) mature a bit more first.
If you must really have the LTE then I would wait for either Verizon or ATT version. But remember you wont have phone capabilities with the Verizon or ATT version.
I am using ATT Go Phone Prepaid on my 7.7. I am in NY and the data speeds are actually pretty fast. I average about 4-6mbps download speeds. Web pages load very fast. For me its good enough.
Yeah, while LTE speeds are amazing, at present I don't have a whole lot of use for them on a tablet. I suppose one should really determine if they need to use it for video streaming/conferencing where there is no WiFi. Otherwise, 3G suffices for most casual use.
The US could actually do with a bit more oversight and regulation in this area so we could use LTE without having to worry about asinine limitations.

I bought my original Tab from AT&T but didn't buy the subsidized version...
Anyway although I understand it has downsides since the IMEI is in the database of the carrier (Yeah it costed me my unlimited plan last year...) t doesn't create that many problems after a bit of clean-up (I use a derivative of CM7.2 (Boca) and also unlocked the device)
Anyway go for he international if you wish, on my side I would really like to have the IR port (No saying the AT&T version will have it but oping for it). And if you want to enjoy LTE speeds just forget about the international version
Anyway... waiting for more versions to be out worldwide in order to pick the best one for me

Verizon no thanks... I travel extensively outside the US and want to be able to use my Tab abroad
For the AT&T version I don't know if it will have voice enabled or not. That's why I am asking i anybody has any news about it. I am curious to see if it has voice enabled or the IR port. Just remember the initial Tab on AT&T was not offciially voice capable but this was fixed quite easily...
Again I am more into checking my options than purchasing anything. My original Tab is actually pretty fast and if my battery life was not getting more and more scarce I would probably wait a while before buying anything new

I can just about guarantee that the AT&T version will NOT be voice enabled. Read my article linked in the previous posts, and you'll understand why.
Buy the international/unlocked 7.7, especially if you travel a lot, and don't look back.
P.S. Don't forget to make sure that AT&T gets a good look at your proud middle finger!

What is for sure is about products that are already out... So what is 100% sure is your international version won't have the IR port. Period. And this is a function I really want to have
For the AT&T version although I believe it is likely it won't have voice enabled, let's wait and see. I am not in a hurry since anyway there is so far no custom ROM for the Tab 7.7. Besides it is quite possible the AT&T will be able to get voice capability
Ideally I'd like voice + IR while I can do without LTE (Even though living in NYC and travelling often to Japan, LTE is actually an interesting option)
Anyway hopefully we will see more and more versions out here and some countries may have it all. If not then I'll pick what seems the best compromise for me
I was just looking at these they negri electronics for the price of a 3g/wifi version for voice usage. If the 7 plus had the same screen and ran 3g if be interested but I'll take the 7.7 with no issue. Anyone know the cheapest place to get one. Negri was at $678 if I remember correctly.

Does anyone know how much the Verizon version will cost at subsidized prices? I mean if it's going to be like the zoom ($499 - $599) when it was first release, might as well get the international version since price won't be that much different.
By the way Jade Eyed Wolf, were you able to sell your Galaxy Note? I have mine and love it but also want the galaxy tab 7.7... my wife is going to kill me if I keep both... it's going to be like $1400 for both devices... I'm trying to sell all my tablets so that I can afford it though.

I still have my Note at this time. I haven't yet put it up on eBay. I'm debating on whether or not I want to hang onto it until it get's official ICS and see what it's like then. Depending on that experience, it's either my Note or my GS2 that goes. Both are in perfect condition though!

[Req] compare Wifi / 3g / Lte

wanna get note 2014 edition , just not sure witch one to get , i've check specs that lte is the best of all , what in real life use ??
Is it really the best ?
Worth the price ?
or should i just get wifi ?
Notice difference than wifi ?
and which one will get more support ? my old tab 2 p5100 (3g) had more support than p5105 (wifi only)
thanks in advance
I got the LTE version because I had a spare SIM card with a free 1 Gb/month data on it and thought "what the heck", but turns out I'm loving the ability to take the tablet everywhere and never having to think of getting Wifi.
Sure, I could use my phone Wifi tethering mode, or use the many public Wifi access points around here (but half of them have issues), but having it "just works" all the time is pretty great.
I just bought the lte version today after some consideration. So far I'm loving it!
After removing Samsung shortcuts from the desktop screens, this thing feels really quick and nice to use. It is not as smooth as my girlfriend's iPad, but it is not bad at all and I have to say I like the Note a lot more than Apple's latest tablet. Web browsing is also smooth especially with Chrome and the display is really good. Sketching is better than the old Note 10.

Most support is difficult to guesstimate. Usually wifi models sell the best but in this case the 4G S800 p605 model is using a more common Snapdragon SoC. It is considerably more expensive though.
If you like power, good screen, multi window and S pen stuff you won't go wrong. You might check up on the future nexus 10 which should be out soon.

I ended up settling on the Wi-Fi only model. B/c I have the free hoptspot on my T-Mobile phone. And I really don't utilize it enough.
Another huge reason why I got this version was because I previously got the original T-Mobile Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 version, and it ticked me off to no end when I kept reading that the WiFi version was getting updates and I was left waiting almost 5 months before T-Mobile "certified" and "allowed" me to update the tablet. And when I did, it was still a version behind.
I was so anxious that I tried flashing the Singapore WiFi ROM on it and came close a many of times bricking it.
So I said never again, and I'm happy with just tethering whenever I need to.
Save the money and go WiFi.
Hope it helps.

Apache0c, torn on whether to buy the P605 or an ounce of palladium since prices are similar (fellow ZH'er joke, gathered from your sig).
Anyway, ordered the P605 from negri (is that where you got yours?) and should probably be here next week. Do you happen to know what region your P605 is from? Did you do all of the automatic OTA updates and then do the de la vega rooting method on your device? Thanks!
I still don't get the big differents between LTE and the other versions except the processor.
Can someone please explain pros and cons regarding the versions available and which version is best for what use upon the other?
Also, can someone please confirm that theyre equipped with Dolby Surround?
