Interesting observation regarding verizon marketing. People always ask me if my phone is a DROID when they see it. I end up saying no and tell them its an evo with android os. they look at me thats what i said a droid.
Did verizon marketing cause all android phones to be Droids? I have a suspicion that droid rolls of the tongue alot easier than android and verizon making it famous with their commercials.
What do you think?
I get that a lot too, Verizon has done a ton of marketing with the Droid name and that's more recognizable to a lot of people than the Android name itself. I just tell people it's similar but don't go too much into it most of the time.
I don't know about you but when people say that to me it bugs the hell out of me.

Yeah that is mildly annoying and something that seems more like a combination of marketing and lack of Android knowledge.

+1 ..... I explain it. Every time. SO annoying.
Actually, it DOES make a difference.
One thing all of us knowledgeable Android users have in common is that we want Apple to die. While that is now happening slowly, it could happen much more quickly if we answer the "is that a Droid" question accurately.
It is important that we explain to folks that is a variation of the Droid but different based on X, Y, Z. If you don't help them understand, they will just be confused and the Apple folks love that since they cater to the idiots. The Apple brand got good at making people feel "smart" for their purchase decision even though they have a product that is inferior. There is less to be confused about with an Apple product because quite frankly, they do your thinking for you... or at least for the people who don't want to think.
So it is our job to fix that... and to explain to the smartphone world how wonderful Android is and how great it is that they have options.

LIES. haha i love apple, just wouldn't buy an Iphone
I very much enjoy my macbook pro.
I concur with edufur. I always explain the difference and add that it allows people purchase the phone that is right for them with the features they want. You want a big screen? Go Evo or Droid X. You want a physical keyboard? Go Epic, Evo Shift or Droid. Etc.
I don't really get annoyed by it. I'd rather save my anger for road rage or something "constructive" like that.

I always seem to get stuck in front of those kind of people haha.
Exactly. Fan boys are annoying... (I mean all fan boys, doesn't matter if they are apple, android, or any other company)
I do a 3 second size-up. If they look remotely technologically capable, I tell them it's an HTC EVO 4G running Android OS.
If they look like my parents, I tell them it's a Droid EVO... they seem to 'get' that.
If someone was interested enough in Android they'd probably know the difference ... those that don't probably don't care if it's a droid or a 'roid.
I wouldn't waste my breath unless they clearly showed interest. Hell, this cleaning lady just said to me the other day that AT&T is now going to start carrying Android phones. I just said, "Cool, 'bout time!" It was clearly a "small talk" moment as are the usual "Droid bombs" so I wouldn't bother getting into specifics. Or wasting my breath on something they probably won't even remember.
Just say yes its a Droid and let them be........rather say its a Droid than a iPhone
I thought I was the only person this happens to.
I've explained it so many times my short answer is "Same operating system"
"Droid" is a brand name, much like "Kleenex", "Q-tip", and "Jell-o".
However, you don't usually hear people calling generic/store-brand versions as "facial tissues", "cotton swabs", and "gelatin desert" in regular/informal conversation.
So Droid is becoming to Android what Kleenex is to facial tissues; a brand that everyone associates with the entire genre of products. What's needed is proper re-education on the matter, and that can best be done with competition of a similar product.
For example: Both Windows and Mac computers are PC's (personal computers), but society has learned to distinguish, and that "PC" means (usually) Windows. Other examples: Laptops and netbooks (both are portable computers that can sit on your lap, but netbooks are now not considered "mini laptops", but their own product). Cable and DSL Internet ("Broadband" now typically only applies to Cable, even though DSL is technically "broadband" Internet service as well).
I usually just say yeah its a droid. I have noticed that a lot of people think the droid phones are the original and any other android device is a knock off of the droid. That is what really gets to me.

Ok, so this is of course old news, I just stumbled over the article by accident a few minutes ago and thought I'd share because of the hilarity of it all. It was a pretty laughable article in 2007, but even more so now when Android is in full swing and is getting better by the month and more and more manufacturers joins the OHA.
Hindsight 20/20 and all that, but most of us hardcore Androiders knew Android would not fail, despite what a few self-proclaimed experts said on their blogs. We knew it even as far back as 2007/2008. Ben Kunz obviously didn't, though.
Lol just read this Ben Kunz what a MOD EDIT
think of your choice of wording when you post.
thank you
I remember reading this a long time ago. I laughed then, but it is even funnier now. The comments are almost equally funny.

It's heartening news, but you gotta consider that percentage growth is one of those marketing spin numbers. A platform that is selling 1M units in 2008 experiencing a 900% growth sells an additional 9M. A platform selling 10M units in 2008 only has to grow 90% to experience the same increase in sales growth.
Well, to be honest, if the G1 looked like that prototype picture...I wouldn't have bought it. That is one seriously ugly looking phone with a tiny ass screen.

True, but as a self-proclaimed expert on all things tech he should of course have known Android is not about hardware (let alone about prototype hardware). Android is about software.
I knew that as soon as I first heard and read about Android back in 2007, I bet you knew that, and I also bet most people on this forum knew that -- we knew the possibilities was and is almost endless. Ben Kunz, however, did not. And he wrote a downright stupid article about it, showing off his ignorance.
It did bring us lots of amusement though, so kudos to Ben for making a fool out of himself

I've got one of the prototype phones for testing... while its no G1, the keyboard is a lot nicer to use. For folks who just want a simple lightweight texting phone, I can see it being pretty attractive.

I hear what you are saying, but lets...for arguments sake...equate a cell phone to a woman (no offense to women...but its the best modern day analogy I can make at the moment).
Okay, men (in this case the generic term "men" means "customers") look for a woman, they want it all...sexy, intelligent, and able to do a lot of things (interpret that as you see fit).
A G1 fits most of that. A G1, while not the sexiest in the world, is decent enough looking...but what she lacks in looks she makes up for by being highly intelligent and capable of performing a variety of tasks you may hope she can do...as a woman.
The Android prototype in the picture may be able to do a lot of tasks, but she can't do everything...and, while intelligent, she is seriously to fat (wide), to short (squat and square) and way too fricken ugly to really be considered anything more than a friend (like when you look at your buddies cell phone that was a free give-away for signing a contract).
Now, to really get the whole package, Android phones need to take a page from Apple's book and make something super sexy like an iPhone with all the other Android and tech components in the G1...only with longer battery life.

The software is horrible, but the hardware is pretty good. The iPhone is popular because it's easy to learn and has more apps than any other OS. Oh, and guess what's in the iPhone. A Samsung processor.
No matter what Apple comes out with I will never get another one of their products. The thing that really sets Android from iOS and the iPhone is there is only 1 phone with iOS and there have been over 40 released android phones with atleast 12 more confirmed to be released and over 10 rumored phones.
I still believe that Android will out sale iPhone no matter where it goes.
Apple provides no freedom to its subscribers other than the reveled "App Store" that's about as varietal as it gets for them. No alternate phones to use, no alternate homescreen, GUI (unless jailbroken i suppose) just the same tried nd true iphone with a faeclift and some hardware changes from time to time some for the better, some for the worse lol. I love their PC's nd laptops but i will NEVER own an iphone.
If anyone here really has that big of a boner for the Iphone4 I'd be really suprised. It's not a bad phone but I just hate apple, and it doesn't do anything that the EVO or any other phone coming out can't do. I'd take an EVO over that any day. I'm android from here on out.
This video sums up this entire thread lol!!!

Its still the same iPhone4 just a new radio. As the Android Phones continue to evolve it will still be what is out right now.
I work with a bunch of people who all have Iphone's and talk amongst each other and it kills me, I think it's safe to say I'm an android snob. One could say that I think I'm better for owning an android phone and having it rooted. I might argue at first, but honestly I can't help it. But seriously, I too feel the same way, I'm a college student and everyone rich kid and their parents have an iphone and think that they are so cool. All i can think when i see them, is my phone is better than yours. And i have a hero! a phone that in the rapid pace phone world, is obsolete.

And yet, i agree with this. While i would never own an iphone willingly, i do have a macbook and i couldn't be happier with it. I can do anything i want on it and it never fails me. No crashes, no freezing, no viruses. Nothing. Its solid.
But at the same time, i don't carry it around with me everywhere so everyone can see my macbook. I don't go sit in coffee shops just to surf the internet. I chose a macbook not cause it's the cool thing to have, but because I believed it was the best choice i could make. So I'm not an apple hater, I just think that if I'm spending a considerable amount of money on a tech device, it better work to its complete and full potential.

If the iPhone was available for Sprint.... I would buy it. The only reason I didn't get one in the first place is because AT&T makes you pay out the ass every month. The iPhone 4 is the best phone on the market right now. The only downside to iPhone is that you can't customize it as well as Android, but... you can put Android on the iPhone! Again, the iPhone is the best phone you can buy right now.
The way it looks now, HTC, Motorola, and maybe even Samsung and LG are going to all be putting out phones that will be directly competing with not only the iPhone, but each other also. That's cool that Apple busts out hardware that puts all these companies in there place for a minute, but on the software sides of things, I'll take Android any day. The nonstop onslaught of Android phones coming out makes me think the Iphone4 won't be on top hardware wise for very long. They seem to be up against almost every phone manufacturer now.

I'm sure it's not just me who has experienced this. Whenever anyone asks me what kind of phone I have, I reply, "Droid Incredible."
The responses range from:
"Is it incredible? Ha ha." to "That's pretty incredible! Ha ha."
Never anything other than a stupid punny response I've heard a thousand times.
I tried installing a new rom and upgrading the radio, but the problem persists... Does anyone have a fix?
I prefer saying "it's an Android"
Although my other favorite thing to say is "it's like an iphone, but better in every single way"
Tell them it's a google phone. It they cannot tell by looking at it your wasting your time.

I know on sites like Engadget people say "Yeah, I see a million iPhones on the subway but never an Android, Steve Jobs is God!" blah blah blah (I personally like some Apple products, but do these people really think Steve Jobs sits down and designs every single spec?). Anyway college started up again on the 7th for a lot of us and the short time I was on campus I saw 2 Incredibles (not counting the one in my pocket), what looked like a Droid X and a couple people rocking Desires. Besides some cash-strapped guy with a Cricket flip-phone, those were all the phones I saw.
I swear at least half of iPhone users buy an iPhone as a "status symbol" (FYI, I am not knocking the iPhone here, just the braindead people that want to be "in with the in crowd". /rant
Also I don't know if this was just a joke or if you really have dummies coming up saying this to you, but I would reply, while talking as fast as possible "It's an HTC Model ADR6300 with a 1GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor, 8GB of Internal Memory...." etc, etc, then start listening off all of the modifications you have made to it and finish with "... more commonly known by it's Verizon codename, the Droid Incredible.". Or if the person isn't worth the effort just say "it's an ADR6300" =p.

I would reply "Err what's iPad btw?" And let them explain then we can have fun asking the shortcomings

A girl at my school saw me playing fruit ninja on my XOOM and said "how did you get the iPad 2 already?" *facepalm*

Should've said "how did you become a dumbass?"
might be a bit overboard, but it'd get the point across.
These people aren't dumb nor is it their fault that they're not aware of the Xoom. You should be more annoyed at Motorola's marketing. I have seen one commercial and quite honestly....it sucked.
I think Android will always have this problem...Apple is one company and Android devices are made by a number of different manufacturers. Makes it hard to market Android as a whole. I guess things will get easier once the market is flooded with Android tablets.
Best thing to do is point out the positives of Android vs IOS without being a d-bag.

Really lame fanboy comments on here, but it's a Xoom forum so it's excusable i guess.
If you like your Xoom, then fine, why deride others who like their iPads? If nobody you've come across knows about the Xoom or keeps mistaking it for some sort of iPad-thingy, then whose fault is that? Those people are neither stupid or dumb like you all seem to think. I have an Epic and an iPad, both of which i like and use quite well. Won't be getting a Xoom, not interested, waiting to see the Galaxy tablet.
Where's the marketing from Motorola, where's the push from VZW? You'd think that these were the same folks who made a big push with the "Droid Does" phone campaign that brought Android awareness to all and sunder.
Walk into any BestBuy and see where and how they've displayed the Xoom. It's in some nondescript corner somewhere with no ecosystem of accessories around it (at least the NYC store here). Almost like an afterthought...just something else we carry. No eye-catching signage, no display props, very little employees who go out of their way to even know about it...
This is what kills me why does there need to be marketing for a product you already know about hand possibly own? Plus aple users tend to be vocal about their devices as well fanactical to some extent which is fine. Why do people feel the need to judtify their own purchases or need to bash one in order to like another? I have a xoom, bought an I pad that I never see(wife and kids's really) and think both serve their purpose. Also one of apples biggest strengths isn't their products but their marketing.
You must all be using some different kind of Xoom then me. I love android more then any other OS but this thing is the biggest piece of janky **** I have ever used. Nothing works, everything force closes. Coming from a galaxy tab this is a giant step DOWN. Granted it ran froyo, but it ran it flawlessly. My friends nook color runs honeycomb better then this. Every minute I use this thing I get more frustrated. Picked it up last night bringing it back within the hour. Huge let down.

I understand where you're coming from, LordLugard, and honestly I don't think people are stupid because they think the xoom is an ipad. Its just my humorous criticism of how I hate apple! Lol. Why? Because apple sucks. Why? ...just because. Lol. Im not being negative towards anybody, but think its funny. And I can care less about the exploitation of the xoom. I actually like being a part of something that's not so trendy. However, Motorola is making a lot of mistakes by not marketing the device properly and shipping it off "incomplete". Also, the xoom is super expensive...but I am definitely a happy camper! Its perfect for school, play, and among other things. Xoom xoom baby!

NYC is very much an iPad "keeping up with the Jones" kind of place. I can hear the conversation now. "Have you seen the latest iPad, simply incredible, I must have one". "Wilfred will you hold Tootsey so I can run to the Apple Store".
Handguns and Xooms will probably be banned at Starbucks.
Wish motorola was this cool...

What a whiny little *****. Wah, wah, wah!!! Go cry somewhere else. I won't even address that with a legitimate response, I'll just mock you instead.
I think it's awesome that Samsung is trying to engage with the community. I heard that they might have actually given away more devices than just the one. That's amazing. Motorola side skirts the issue and lays blame elsewhere, Samsung steps up to the plate and mails out free hardware.
Sounds like it's some to seriously consider an SGII. Can't wait forever on Motorola anymore... did this with the X10 and not going to do it again with another device.
Time to trade for SGSII!

they are just being grateful of how devs resurrected the original sgs :bleh:
Great move by Samsung! I miss all of the Dev on the SGS and love that Samsung not only allows it, but actually encourages it. I really like my Atrix but it will be my last Motorola phone unless Moto opens things up like Samsung, HTC, etc.

Add me to that list. I was very hesitant to buy a Moto, and if it were not the best ATT has to offer I would return it.

I agree...my Atrix will be my last Moto phone. Next will be along the lines of the Nexus 3 or Samsung

While I do think it's good to see Samsung doing this, it doesn't mean they will do anything else with it. Remember, this is the same company that left millions of customers with a malfunctioning GPS for more than a year.
I dare say, this may be a publicity stunt of some kind.

Thankfully I missed the SGS GPS fiasco... but if a company wants to give free phones to the sickest developers, I can't see how anyone is able to come here and lament over the past.
Would you guys rather see the same mistakes over and over? No one's asking for forgiveness. This is a win-win situation. No one loses. How can ANYONE seriously *****? Maybe there's something I'm missing...

Nobody is complaining as you say. I am just saying, it will take more than this gesture to restore my confidence in Samsung Mobile. I am not saying it won't happen, just not over this single gesture.
I honestly am amazed they have done this. The motivation behind it, remains to be seen. I hope they have realized the error of their ways.
I also agree with the sentiment that Motorola should be learning from this.

I'm not saying anyone has to forgive Samsung for their huge flops in the past. But no one has the right to complain or make cynical comments either. Not all that I said was particularly directed at you.
Samsung could have thrown kittens off a building and then donated billions of dollars in relief aid to third world countries - this won't right their wrongs but at least it's something. Never mentioned anything about the past or forgiveness either, and I don't see why everyone's so hung up on it.
I'm not living in the past. I want new phones, new software, new everything. I'm concerned about the present and the future, not the past.

You make good points. However, let me just add this one little phrase and it should help you understand how some people might feel.
Burn me once, shame on you! Burn me twice, shame on me!
This is the heart of why people become biased against a manufacturer. There are many people who feel the same about Motorola at this point.

Yep, definitely a valid point. But all things considered, Sammy just gave a bunch of kickass devs free phones and now they're all jacked up to start working on Cyanogen mod. How cool is that? I honestly can't get past the coolness factor.
