quick question for you guys. i keep seeing ''make a nandroid backup'' i tried to search to find what it is and how you do it but had no luck. can someone explain what it is and how you perform one? TIA
It is a backup of your current ROM, everything about your phone as it currently is will be saved; apps, data, homescreens, everything. We do this every so often so that when we inevitably flash a bad ROM or do something to our phones to f them up, we can get back to a working state. You can do it by getting into recovery mode by turning the phone off, then holding the two vol buttons along with power. Or download ROM Manager from the Market, and you can do it from inside that app.

Be aware it does not back up the kernel. So if your on stock 2.1. And you flash a 2.2 rom and decide you don't like it you can't restore your 2.1 nandroid over a.2.2. This also applies visa versa.

I have done the update from 2.1 to 2.2 and everything is working right. Once I go into Rom manager to do a backup it goes through everything just fine and puts everything in the CW folder under backup. When I go into Rom manager to apply one of the backups it just does nothing. Is it something that I'm doing wrong or is anybody else having the same problem ?
It doesn't work because full nand isn't unlocked. Does it to me on 2.1 stock and ota also sir. When we get s-off then yuh. This needs to go into general...not development dude. Come on now.
Then why did it work just fine when I had 2.1 before I updated ?
it work fine on 2.1 for me.
Try doing a nand restore in recovery instead of rom manager.

I had the same thing happen with ROM Manager as "jeeyota." And when I went into recovery (by pushing the power down + power) I got the bootloader, but when I selected recovery it magically started to restore the backup I had selected from within ROM Manager...instead of going into recovery as you would have thought...
It works if you just go into recovery so it must be Rom manager for some reason
I have noticed the same issues with more than one app.
For me it appears that any app that has the ability to reboot the phone did this with the stock 2.2 update.
I tried several quick reboot apps and none would reboot the phone for me.
I am now running the SkyRaider ROM and it appears to be working the way it should.
Not really sure if it was switching ROMs that changed things or something else I done.

Just tried to flash a rom and the phone rebooted and when it came back I have no market at all. I press on the market icon and I get a note saying to send a message and report it. I am freaking out.

Did you flash a gapps (Google apps) package?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Yeah, you need to flash a Google Apps zip. Roms don't come with them, or well, some do, but technically that isn't legal and Google doesn't like it.
did you do a nandroid?
And here, not sure how these work on a non cm7 rom, but you can give it a go.

The universal dpi for cm7 might work. You would probably need to wipe your phone
cm6 hdpi might be your best bet
I did a back up and my rom never flashed due to the new recovery I used on rom manager. My original rom (stock with root obviously) came back with al my google apps but the market. I DL the market thru my browser but my phone will not allow the download. Tried going into recovery but the new recovery I dl thru rom manager will not allow me to use my back up or the other roms I have on my sd card. When I go into recovery I get the triangle and the little guy, I hit the power button and volume up and go into this weird looking recovery that doesn't allow what I need.
Help me I'm screwed I think. I think the new recovery I dl screwed me all up.
Vinny
Put the old recovery on it then, and restore your nandroid.
If you ended up with stock, you may have lost your root. So root again and install the recovery that you made the nandroid with.

I'm a bit confused.
It looks like you're using the stock recovery. Somehow you corrupted flashing a recovery.
You're far from screwed. If you can flash clockwork 3.0 from ROM manager. If that doesn't work, try this.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/
I would advise using clockwork, as it has tight integration with ROM manager. Here's the download for that.

IF you lost root, you're going to have to go through a lengthy process. Let me know if you need help.
EDIT: Ok so I flashed it back to 2.1 stock, i'm gonna try flashing Bionix again, is there something I should do before flashing it? Am I in the wrong version or something? Help!
Ok so here's the situation:
I was running Axura 2.0.3 or something and things were ok, but I wanted to flash to something better, so I downloaded the Bionix Frost 2.2.1 ROM and flashed it. It didn't have any of my contacts or SMS so I went to flash it back to my last backup, which was 12/15/10, and Axura. I go to Clockwork Mod, and run the nandroid backup and now when my phone boots up, it goes through the screens, and freezes on the Galaxy S screen, then everything turns black and when I touch the screen, all the bottom buttons light up, but nothing happens, and the only way to get that to turn off is to pull the battery.
Is there any way I can fix this? I have Odin, but i'm not sure exactly what to do here.
flash a kernel. nandroid does not restores kernel.

First things first, calm down.
This is not hard, but it can seem that way if you freak.
Did you read the guides? Did you download rom manager, flash cwr, go to stock recovery and reinstall packages (twice maybe)?
i really think it's about flashing a kernel.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
So what kernel do I need? I'm back at full 2.1 stock, and I want to get back to my Axura 12/15/10 nandroid, do I need a kernel?
That axura is 2.2 right? So any 2.2 kernels should be fine,
flash nandroid then before rebooting flash kernel.
In the phone information it says my Kernel is 2.6.29? It says firmware version is 2.1update 1.
If I just want to flash to Bionix, do I need to update a kernel or can I just go straight ahead and do that?
yes. you don't need to flash a kernel when you flash bionix.
You only need to flash a kernel when you are restoring a nandroid backup.
Thanks, you helped a lot.
One last question: how do I move my contacts and SMS over? Whenever I flash a new ROM I seem to lose it.

2.6.29 froyo .....u need 2.1 eclair kernel !!!!!
What if when rebooting to recovery re-installing packaged always end up in failure? Should I go ahead and flash a rom?

Hey so I've been flashing roms for awhile now with no problems... But the other day I odined back to stock... Now after I flash any rom when I use the power button to try to wake the phone up to get to the lockscreen it takes forever for it to wake up... But this only happens after I flash a rom.... Doesn't happen on the stock jfd rom..... So I know its nothing wrong with the button itself....
And also after flashing custom rom and booting into recovery from cwm the recovery will be red not green and I can't restore any nandroid backups....
So anyway... I haven't done anything different than I have in the past as far as flashing goes but now my phone is jacked!
If anyone knows why this is happening I would greatly appreciate any help!
Thanks

This happened to me the other day and I could not restore a nandroid either. Still don't know what happened and I haven't even tried to restore anything b/c I don't want to have to Odin back and rebuild everything again from scratch.
When I was on Cincinnati Bell stock Froyo, I was able to root and install CWR with the green recovery and screwed something up and was able to restore just fine. I have since flashed Toxic8 which comes with the Red Recovery and through some self-inflicted stupidity, caused an unrecoverable bootloop that I couldn't clear, wipe or restore. That is when I had to Odin and rebuild.
Interested if anyone else knows why this is. Wonder if I could download CWR from market and use that as opposed to the Red Recovery that came with the ROM?
The red cwr is for voodoo enabled roms make sure you disable voodoo before flashing roms that do not include voodoo lagfix.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I knew that Red was for Voodoo, but would I have to disable it to restore the same ROM, just a backup? With the Red Recovery,I haven't been able to restore anything at all. In fact IIRC I did try it with it disabled and it didn't work that way either.
Hey guys,
I rooted my Fascinate successfully, then I installed Titanium Backup.
On TB, I tried 'force uninstalling' VZW Apps.
Then, my Fascinate crashed, and now it boots into recovery.
On recovery, I can't do anything. I'm planning to reset my Fascinate.
Do I need to re-flash CwM Recovery to reset?
Also, do I keep Superuser when I reset?
Android version: 2.3.5
Thanks.
No need to flash again. Since you are still on gingerbread you can use 3 finger method to get into cwm (hold power volume up and down to turn on the phone until the Samsung screen flashes)
You probably don't even have to flash a new rom and can just do a full user data wipe. The caveat to that would be if you tried to push the bad apk as a system app.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
Edit: I assumed you had flashed cwm to start since you said reflash but nowhere do you state that you actually have. In any case, try 3 finger. If you end up in cwm you arr golden. If its Samsung recovery then flash cwm.
Oh, and ALL decent roms come pre rooted so don't worry about that. And there's really no reason to use the Samsung stock from as both superclean and geewiz are based on it and include additional fixes and features not found in stock
Still some problems
Hey, thanks for the advice. I think I need to reflash.
Also, I have used the recovery system before.
