Easiest way to switch between custom roms - XPERIA X10 General

Okay im sure im not the only one to use this method but i personally think its a good idea as it's so easy.
Install Xrecovery and reboot into it, using the volume keys scroll down to "back up and restore", hit "home" to enter the next menu.
Back up your current rom, when its finished, use back to navigate to " install custom.zip, then install the next rom you want, or as some of the roms are set up you can restore into them, play around and get it running how you want it.
Once its set up to your liking reboot into xrecovery again and back up this rom,
The only limit technically is the amount of space on your SD card as that is where they are backed up to.
You can now easily switch between custom roms, i have 5 on my phone at the moment and i can switch easily between them
I recommened renaming the back ups so you know which rom is which but that would make sense anyway
If you back up the stock Sony rom you can restore into it at any time, for example if you dont like the rom you installed
This was intended for new members who are new to the whole custom rom thing
Thanks

nice guide for the new members!
EDIT: there's a thread in general sector! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=918808

thanks, although there already appears to be a thread which i didnt see before i set it up

both are usefull.

[Q] Im new and lost

I just had my dad do a full root on my evo just for the wireless tether. i really love the options that have opened up and want to pursue them. i want to be able to install boot animation, lock bars, and themes. the problem i am having is i really dont know where to start. ive done alot of research on things but doesnt really tell me exactly what i need to do. i have been told that i need to get a new rom to be able to use custom themes and lockbars and stuff like that. with that i was told i need to do a nanoid backup. so what i am asking from you guys (the expertts with alot of patience for noobies is step be step instructions on what i need to do. i dont even know how to do a nanoid backup. tell me what actions i need to take and what apps i will need to make all this happen. please help me all the other forums tell me is stop being a noob are use the search feature. i just dont think other peoples posts are exact;y what i am asking for so please give me help so i wont be such a noob and have a custom look on my evo.
I'll help you start by flashing a custom recovery which will allow for nandroid backup, data wipes, and flashing custom roms.
1. Download Rom Manager from the Market
2. Open Rom Manager and flash ClockworkMod recovery, which is the first option in Rom Manager. You can use this recovery, which should be installed if your father ran UnRevoked 3.2 to root your EVO.
3. However, I recommend scrolling down to the bottom of Rom Manager and flashing the alternate recovery, Amon Ra. This is the one I prefer to use to flash my roms and whatever else.
4. Grab Quick Boot from the market for easy reboot into recovery or you can just power off then hold vol down + power on to boot into HBOOT. From HBOOT, you can scroll to select recovery, which should put you into Amon Ra.
5. In recovery, you should see Backup/Restore option. Click this and do a nandroid backup. Let it run through until it states completed.
6. Return to main recovery menu, and goto wipe. Select wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. You can do each wipe twice just to be on the safe, if you like.
7. Once nandroid and full wipe done, you can select USB-MS to connect your SD card to your PC to load a custom rom onto the root of your card. Once loaded, just disconnect the SD card by hitting power button and return to main recovery menu.
7. If your custom rom is on the SD card root, you should see the rom zip file when you select flash zip from card. Scroll to the rom and select it. Let the rom flash process complete and then reboot the phone.
8. This should take possibly 3-5 minutes to completely load the custom rom onto your phone.
9. Hopefully, everything worked out and the phone boots into the custom rom's homescreen or handsfree setup.
WoW
WoW i dont even know where to begin on telling you how big of a help you was, you answered my post exactly how i needed it answered for me to understand it and be able to do it......thank you soooo much
I do have an additional question to this, what custom rom should I use? Will it have 2.2? And are there tutorials how to install themes? Do I need to have sense to install these themes?
I really appreciate your assistance!!!
Hit up the development forum and check out all the roms. Look at the screenshots and features. When you find one you like, grab it. Check out Fresh 3.3 and Myn's Warm twopointtwo. I've used those both in the past. Those both have Sense and Myn's ROM is already themed (and looks nice in my opinion). Themes are flashed the same way as roms and the descriptions will tell you if they're Sense-compatible.
Remember to make nandroid backups frequently. Find a rom, get it set up to your liking, nandroid, and then get another rom and do it all over again until you decide on one.

choice of rom is up to you, most you'll see will be 2.2 which you'll want for full flash support, to be able to install themes you will NEED and (deodexed) rom. Look for deodexed roms, and there are plenty. A lot of themes will be flashable zips which you install the same way you install a rom (through recovery-install zip from sdcard-choose zip from sdcard).

Thanks you guys! I sorta figured out how to apply themes using the recovery screen after boot up, but it caused the screen to go black HAHA. But anyways, I couldn't find a definitive answer to what I was looking for. I will check out the deodexed roms, thanks!
I one more EXTREMELY important thing about themes, do wipe cache and dalvic twice, but DO NOT WIPE DATA. That is probably why your screen went black. Eithe that or the rom was not de odexed
kernel help

[Q] pirate rum

hi
1st off im new to rooting and playing with roms. now ive just loaded up the pirate rum and now when i turn the phone on i cant get past the pirate rum screen and none of the buttons work i cant turn off the phone unless i release the battery
please help i hope ive not ****ed my phone
Can you boot into fastboot by press down the back key while turning the power on? if so see if you can get into recovery
yeah i can do that, what next
wipe the device completely and reflash the ROM
In recovery, use wipe data (warning: this will, as the name suggestst, delete all your data).
Also if you speak german, look for advice in the 'android hilfe' forum, where the rom is supported: http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-ha...8-desire-rom-pirate-rum-sense-nx1-hybrid.html
ive wiped it but sadly i dont speak german so anything i can do now??
Download and flash again (maybe the file was corrupt).
and/or
Get ADB and check the logcat (look around in the forums for instructions).
and/or
Try another ROM.
Hello mate, if it's a stable Sense UI ROM you want to use then I'd recommend LeeDroid or Pinky Desire (although the latter hasn't been updated for a while...)
I suggest wiping all data, then flashing something stable like cyanogen mod 6, just google cyanogen. Download it, put in sdcardand flash in recovery
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
ok imhaving tyrouble with this
how it started.
i rooted with unrevoked
downloaded titanium backup and rom manager from market
then downloaded the pirate rum rom through rom manager
i have clockwork recovery
just tried downloading the cm6 rom but having difficulty
Right honestly i would play around with a sense rom untill you know what you are doing.
Go and download Leedroid from the rom section
Remove your sd card and put into your computer
put the leedroid file (should be a zip) on the root (not in any folders) of your sd card
Put your card and battery back in and turn on while holding the volume down key
Select recovery by using the Vol keys and powre button to select
You should now have some green text (your joy stick will work now also)
Select data/factory wipe
select yes
now use back and select zip from sd card
select your leedroid file and again select yes
it will tell you when its don, hit the back key again and select reboot.
it will take a while 5-10min to install but just leave it

[Q] Help: Installing Rom over existing ROM

I have an HD2 that I had someone flash to android for me.
The phone initially functioned pretty well, although i immediately noticed that the phone would sometimes crash when I launched Navigator.
Months down the road, the phone began crashing more frequently, and now has become a serious concern for me. The phone will crash when running youtube, gps (google & navigator), and sometimes with the camcorder.
Sometimes it will just restart- out of nowhere.
I have about 120 apps- just mentioning-- not sure if this makes a difference--
So I've decided that i would like to change the Rom.
I've been reading through the forum for a while-- I would like to be pointed to the best reference for proceeding with this-- since I haven't actually done this before.
Will I need to go through the process of radios and stuff-- not sure, since i already have an android rom running on the system.
What is one of the better Rom's available, with working features?
Thanks in advance for any help--
here is a shot of my current system:
well i'll say if you ask a 10 people here what ROM is best your bound to get 20 different responces. this is simply because some people rather sence based, some like miui and some prefer CyanogenMod. what i would suggest is a ROM thats rather easy to flash & use so you can get an idea of how to flash it. after you feel comfortable you can check out the vast Android builds the hd2 has to offer.
i would suggest either rafdroid hd found here or bluetopia hd found here. both builds are very easy to flash, just make sure you follow the directions closely and you wont have a problem. you dont need to change the radio more then likely since its probably already been done before. please note that bluetopia is meant for tmous users and not 512. personally i'd check out rafdroid hd anyway just because it has a very detailed description on how to flash the ROM.
both of those are sence builds but if you rather a non-sence base you can look at this webpage for a ROM you rather flash. it lists tons of builds to go through so pick one that you feel would be better for you.

Glad to see a fellow hd2 user on Rafdroid HD.
Yes Rafdroid HD is one of the completed sense roms but is not the latest.
Latest roms have sense 3 but will have bugs
You will need this (ClockWorkMod. aka CWM) Flash magdlr first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044830
Depending on rom, you will have to choose cwm partition size. RafDroid Hd uses 400mb. Other roms may have to set custom partition size.Click Here for Rafdroid HD
Lastly, you may need sd-ext3 partition. Recommended 1Gb
1)
...If you are still on magdlr flashing method and not cwm boot to magdlr menu.(Hold power button till you see a menu). Press Android Hardreset.(Call button to select, volume keys up/down)
...If on CWM already, boot to magdlr menu and select Recovery. Press the "delete data/factory reset"
2)
Flash a new cwm partition using USB flasher option.
3)
Put rom in sd card (do not unzip the rom, leave it as .zip)
4)
Boot to CWM and select install zip from sdcard. Navigate to rom file and select. Flashing may take up to 15mins or more.(Just be patient, do NOT remove battery when it is flashing halfway, just leave it alone)
5)
Once done press reboot system. First boot may take longer to load. Once it boots to setup phone screen, youre good to go!
OK-- I'm not really following all of this CWM stuff-- I watched the guy who put android on my phone go through the process-- and asked him to briefly detail me the steps--
he never mentioned anything about cwm... so what exactly is that?
since android was already flashed to my device-- what would be the best process of removing the current android system and installing another?
i powered up my phone while holding down volume key--
its reads
PB81120 SSB3
SPL-2.08.HSPL 8G XE
0x05
CotullaHSPL 0x40
serial

i also know that i have a magldr---
how do i know whether i have tmous or 512?

i would read:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021837
basically, cwm allows you to flash android roms without using a computer to install. (as opposed to daf.exe roms, which you need to tether to the computer.) it is much more than that, but that is all you need to know now. but read the thread above.
if your hardkey buttons are green/red it is tmousa, 1024
if they are not, it is 512
So- another question-- can anyone take a guess at why my phone is crashing so often--
could it be the number of apps i have downloaded (over 120-- mostly stored to SD)
could it be conflicts in the current ROM being used?
Might it be the battery?
When the ROM was freshly added, the system ran perfectly well, with the exception of Navigator crashing once in a while--
I've probably been running with Android for over 6 months now--
its been acting up for about 3 months now.
problems i often encounter:
crashes when i run-
navigator, gps, youtube, sometimes camcorder
forces closes apps somewhat frequently
I have my system clocked down to around 800mhz on conservative mode, via setCpu, because i feared it was running too hot.
thanks much-- ive read all the posted links--
what i'd like to know-- once i install cwm--
is there a need to wipe the existing rom, before installing another--
or do you just install the desired rom?
yes back up everything 1st. i also like to make a copy of my sd card on my computer. then when your about to flash a ROM you will need tp wipe data & cache. once you've wiped them both you'll need to go down to advanced and select that, go to delvic and wipe that. press back and now you are finally ready to flash the rom by selecting install rom from sd. after it runs dont be alarmed but it can take several mins for it to go through the process. when it says its done then reboot the phone. the boot up time will depend greatly on the rom you've chosen so be patient. it can take up to 10-15 mins for your phone to completly reboot.

this is where i get confused---
where do I "wipe" anything-- what program do i use to do this--
and if I'm "wiping" memory, will i need to reinstall programs like magldr, or any radios, again?
you said "go down to advanced"--- 'advanced' in what running program?
you wipe whats listed above in magldr. you can enter magldr by turning off the phone, then turn on the phone but hold the power button down. you will see magldr pop up if its installed. option 8 is recovery you scroll down my pressing vol up and vol down. to select press the green talk button.
so when you enter magldr you go to option 8, it will go to cwr (recovery) then scroll using vol down/up to wipe data. press the green talk to wipe. do the same thing to wipe cache..then scroll down to advanced and select that by pressing green talk. scroll down to delvic and wipe that by pressing green talk. press back and then select install from sd. now you are able and ready to install a rom. simply select the zip file of the rom you want thats on your sd card. (sorry this should have been listed above..place the rom you want on your sd card) now select the rom by scrolling up or down by vol keys and press talk to select your rom. it will begin flashing. at this point it can take a few mins so dont panic. after it completes you will need to press back button and the reboot phone. when you flash a rom sometimes it can take as long as 10-15 mins for it to boot up. take this time to review and make sure you did every step as its been said and you followed all the instructions listed.
you need to wipe everything between flashes because sometimes there is left over code/data etc that can interfer and mess up your phone. it does not wipe anything like magldr/radio/rom..it really just prepares it for it to except a new rom by deleteing the old data. its the same thing as a factory reset really.
Choosing wipe data/factory reset wipes all the partitions,, cache, dalvik, etcetera, ,, no need to manually clear all the different bits one by one.
yes but a little extra safety precautions never hurt anyone
Watch the screen when you do 'wipe data's, it clears the cache, data,dalvik,sd-ext.... so if you then do them individually too you are wiping already wiped partitions.
i know it goes through them all, i been flashing a looong time since the days of winmo 6. personally i like the comfort of making sure as do a lot of other people here on XDA do. im not the 1st person to suggest doing this. i've seen numerous people give these instruction & i still feel its a good way of double checking before flashing a ROM.

if you installed clockwork mode on your phone, it's easy to install a custom rom.
To get VR 13 you have to download the rom first and copy it to your SD card root. After that you have to reboot your phone into recovery mode, by pressing for a few seconds Home + Power button when the phone is OFF.
After entering the recovery mode, i recommend you do the next steps that are very easy?
1. Backup you existing ROM (the is a section that is called Backup and Restore)
2. Wipe phone data
3. Wipe cache partition
4. Go to advanced -> and wipe dalvik
5. Press back to get back to the main menu and chose to install zip from SD card and after that Chose the ZIP and select the VR 13 ZIP and install it.
6.After installation i recommend that you flash Flykernel 13. You install it just like the rom. You chose the zip and install it. After flashing the kernel you reboot your phone and wait 10 minutes
7. When the phone is ready it enters setup mode and you know what to do from there
8. Ejnoy the new rom
If you have any other problems leave a message.

Sorry missed the other questions
1)Yes it should work in Canada
2)The backup is saved to your SD-card in the clockworkmod-folder, it will then display in rom manager (if it's installed).
You can also get to the backup through the recovery. (The same place were you installed the rom) by holding home+power on startup

You install it just like the rom. You chose the zip and install it.

I need someone to install a Rom for me.

Alright. Weird question.
So my iocean is at the factory to get its screen repaired, is now went back to using my HD2 with the dreaded broken power button.
Managed to find a way around this by using the volume to wake and a notification for screen off.
But the problem is the following.
When i install a new rom, the touchscreen would not work in Aroma. Which means i can only install roms without too many options, by using the home and green start call key to continually press next and so finalizing the setup.
I have had great a lot of trouble finding a rom that could do this. I have found the new official MIUI rom, but that would not let me configure my google account. Now i am using a ICS rom, which is just teribbly slow.
I really like the Nexus rom series, so naturally i want to try the new kitkat rom (http://androidforum.tytung.com/nexushd2-kitkat-cm11-0-t230.html
But the rom has options for a full install, or one where you can choose the apps you want.
I can't select any of these options, therefore i was not able to install the rom.
I did try to remove the bit where you can select the options from the aroma installer, but no dice.
So my question is, would someone be able to install a full install on NativeSD of this rom for me, then make a clockworkmod backup out of it so i can install that? Or if someone could explain me how to install the rom perhaps without the aroma GUI then that would be great too.
Well No Problem ...
