Hey guys! I'm a new user on this forum and I also a completely new android user, I have just gotten the HTC Desire HD. And I'm really really enjoying the OS. The way you can customize the OS is amazing! And Therefore I feel like I have been missing out for a while.
However there is one single problem about the HTC Desire HD and sadly it's a pretty big problem. (You guessed it,) the battery life. I'm not gonna lie, if i cut some features i can easily get through a whole day. But whats the point of buying a phone with lot's of features if you can't use them, and whats the point of having a 4.3" screen if you can't have the brightness level at 50+.
To the point!
HTC have already made updated batteries that have a much higher capacity than the original batteries, these are for some of their other products.
(just look at the higher capacity HD2 batteries by HTC, they have a higher capacity than the original HD2 batteries.)
That's why i suggest that we all contact HTC and let them know that we are both aware and annoyed by the horrible battery. And then request a better and improved battery for the Desire HD.
If you look at their updates, they have a pretty good history of listening to their customers.
And if their customer service department get about 300 requests in one single day I am absolutely sure that we will see a result in a month or maybe even faster.
I live in Denmark myself and I've seen a similar thread in
a Danish forum and in two days time we have had 183 people send mails to the Scandinavian HTC customer service.
Now there is only about 2000 active users on that forum so that's pretty good for two days. And with such a huge success in a Danish forum, I'm sure a big forum like this would do even better!
So if you have the time to write a little email to the HTC customer service telling them about the poor battery life and then make a request for a better battery, I (and probably every DHD user) would appreciate it.
And even if you are one of those lucky users that can go for days without charging while having standard settings, helping us wouldn't hurt.
Thanks in Advance
Well....although I do get your point, I am not sure that I, and probably other people as well, agree entirely on the 'horrible' battery life.
Yes, at first, it does look to have poor capacity when you get your DHD out of the box.
But remember, a lot of people, if not allm are using their new toy a lot the first couple of days.
If you browse this forum and the DHD topics you'll see that people report a lot better battery life after a couple of charges.
In addition to this, when you get into rooting and flashing, you'll see that users with custom roms, custom kernels and special profiles setup in Setcpu (like less Mhz usage when the screen is off) actually even get better battery life out if their DHD....
In essence, from what I have read, most people are able to use their DHD for one day without charging, which in my opinion, is quite acceptable, considering the size of the screen, the speed of the device and the possibilities and syncing going on....
If I sometimes read other cells'threads, it appears to me that the battery life on the DHD is not that far off, or even is better, than other top devices....
Having said that.....the effort you take I understand for sure, I just am not sure that HTC will do anything about it (as I think what we get is what we should expect)...
Where is the solution in that? Infact there is no solution its how it is

DHD battery life sucks.
There is no point defending it. Its a bloody mobile phone, it supposed to be able to work out of box, not a science project that u have to spend days tweaking it in order to last a day without the bloody adapter!
u can tell i m really crossed with DHD battery life...

It does work out of the box. Did yours not turn on?
If you mean 'it's supposed to have the best possible life the first time I fully charge it on day one' then, no it's not. You are wrong.
I just don't get it this was my first proper Android phone after coming from a HD2 and an iPhone 4 and the battery life is on par with both out of the box however simply reducing the time some apps sync I mean can you really not wait the 2 sec ish Twitter etc take to update? Really does improve battery life I have my screen set to 30% brightness which is more than enough if not you need specsavers not a new battery.
At a push I can get 2 days out of my DHD and I would say I'm a average to heavy user about 30 min calls 50 odd text and a couple of hours playing games surfing the net
Gadget show last night drained an iPhone 4 from full charge to flat in 2 hours using the layer app
I don't use setcpu etc I've just used some common sense.

I use iphone4 along side my DHD, almost identical setup in terms of sync and updates. when my DHD battery flat out in the afternoon, iphone4 has typically over 80% left.
I dont think it takes a rocket scientist to see DHD's battery is an issue.

Unplug mine from charging about midnight, get home from work between 18.30 and 20.30 and most nights I have approx 30-40% battery left, LiOn batteries need multiple charge / discharge cycles to get the best out of them so no phone is gonna be at it's best outta the box.
There seems to be massive difference in peoples experience with there DHD mine defo lasts as long as the iPhone 4 I had how yours can last less than 20% there must be something wrong

mine actually died last night (the first night i had it) i was a little surprised but i checked the battery usage and com.zxing..... used like 70%
lol it seems the barcode scanner didn't close and kept the camera on all night
I am a heavy user Facebook sync every hour a hundred odd texts a day few hours of internet browsing and I can get more than 12 hours mainly like 15 hours unplug at 7.30am and charge it 12.30am

it seems that some people have a very good battery life even with heavy use,and some don't. I am new to android having come from windows mobile. In winmo devices, the radio version on the device can make a difference to the battery life on similiar devices.maybe this is the same case on DHD because I noticed there are several version of stock roms with different built of radio image.

There isn't really a benchmark for "heavy user". I reckon its largely due to different interpretations. Throw the difference in batteries that are likely to exist due to the manufacturing process, and you'd get varying reported results.

why do people complaint so much about battery life of DHD and other smartphone. when you look at their capabilities, you wouldn't switch your laptop on an expect it to last all day. cause its a smartphone doesn't mean it can do everything for you!
if the battery really bad, then the is a fault i.e faulty battery, app which is eating up resources, radio constantly changing from 2g to 3g which i think one of the biggest drain on battery or a set up which just going to drain battery faster etc etc. These phone when "out of the box" are set up to show the phone off, so yes its going to have it all sing and dancing at you! with everything switched on why you taylor the setting to meet your needs. please don't come back and say "but yes why have i got a smartphone and then i have to switch off all these features" you don't but don't expect it to last all day.
sorry about the rant but i think some people just have unrealistic expectations how long a smartphone can last. people who complain that the phone cant last 24hrs, why would you want it to last that long?. you telling me you don't sleep in that period of time if you want a phone to last 2 days get a nokia 8950! an if your a person who uses it as a business phone, come on what do you expect? your a heavy user. use some sense, have it so you can charge on the go or a get a nokia 8950 as your business phone, an use your smartphone as your own phone.

True, but i honestly cant see why it would hurt to encourage HTC to make a new battery with higher capacity as a part of their accessory lineup for the Desire HD.
sorry yeah i do agree with you, that HTC sould bring out a higher capactiy battery and don't understand why HTC have not used a higher capactiy battery in first place. ive also have a X10(1500mAh) and BB storm2(1400mAh) both have higher capactiy, and X10 is the worst for battery life out of the 3 phones and DHD beats both these phone on battery life.
HTC have the reasons why they used that size battery for the DHD and if they do bring out a higher capactiy at least you can believe the claims of it being a 1800mAh, were these 3rd party batteries claim 1800mAh but really you only getting 1400mAh.
i was not aiming this rant at you, an im sorry, its to people that complain about battery life of todays smartphone and there expections of them.

Update: the biggest problem is my wifi drops every 2 minutes. It just disconnects and I have to turn it off and on. My wifi is 2-3 bars and wifi sleep policy is never.
How can I fix this?
I know that a restart can fix this, but that shouldn't be necessary every day on the "world's most powerful smartphone". This is like Captivate lag, 10+ seconds for action to be performed... this is just my most recsent problem and this is my 4th atrix.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Problems with phone:
Wifi
Bootloader
Lag
Overheats
Multi touch
That's my list I've put together on my notes app since I got the phone.
Lol just trying to submit this post I ran into the lag and the wifi dropping problems.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Wow just tried playing GT racing during my current lag-attack. It was like a stop motion game.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Sorry but it sounds like there's something wrong that you're doing. The Atrix isn't that bad of a phone, although I'll confide that there are some dud phones from time to time.
After 4 phones and still having these sorts of problems, I'd say there's an app you're installing that is ****ting the bed. 10 seconds of lag is unheard of, man.
Yesterday I went through and uninstall tons a lot of apps I haven't used in awhile.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Today I played a short 1:30 minute video I recorded and I couldn't put my phone in my pocket. Too hot.
For every task I try to do I have to go and toggle my wifi off and back on because it disconnected. Nearly impossible to watch a YouTube video or play an online game.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Also. I was using my phone on my desk today. I noticed that if its on a flat surface, the screen responsiveness is messed up. Would randomly respond to places where I didn't even tap, as well as being unresponsive to touch at some points.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Don't forget battery life. I've had 2 atrix batteries, both barely last me the day with little use of the phone.
Battery life is the only good part... I can get about 4:15 hours of display time per charge on about 35 percent display brightness.
My first one the GPS couldn't even get a lock lol... captivate was better. And I think it has gingerbread now.
For this post I had to reset wifi 3 times!!!¡¡¡
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Oh and im rewted with the recommended list of apps frozen with TB.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
I can´t believe you created a new thread to "complain" about your phone. There are plenty of other threads where you can rant about the phone. I actually don't have any of the problems you listed... If this is your 4th Atrix, why don't you just stop nagging about your horrible experience with it and buy a different phone. If it's that bad, nobody forces you to keep it...
Didn't realise this was a restricted forum.
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Bummer man. Sorry to hear you've had such bad luck. My Atrix experience has been just opposite of yours -- everything has worked quite well. Coming from an iPhone, my expectations were quite high too. My gps has been stellar, wifi rarely drops, my phone doesn't get hot, I have almost no lag, and things generally work well. My guess is that it's either a hardware QC issue, or you've got some software installed that is really misbehaving. Hope you get it sorted out -- there's not many things more frustrating than having a laggy phone.
You should write on your thread more than every hour.

Hey, im a new android user and this is my first android phone. My phone is completely stock as of yet, still the battery dosent last for more than a day of basic usage.
By basic i mean surfing the web, doownloading stuff from market. Couple of minutes spent on facebook. 5 phone calls and a few texts.
What surprises me more is that all this while, 3G and wi-fi were switched off, edge was on. Brightness on 0% all the time, no live wallpaper too.
Also charging takes a little too long, took 4 hours from 10% to full.
Do recommend ways of maxing out my battery. Thanks in advance.
Ps. Things are getting better after installing advanced task killer.

Hi guys, I'm new to this part of the forum coming from a Desire S.
The Desire S forum was a really nice place to be, so I decided to set up an OFF-TOPIC thread. It turned out very well, and is a great place where I made friends and learned tips and advice for both my device and other things in life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1611085
I would like to try it here. I hope this thread will also help to cut down the number of OT post in other threads. (as it has done it the Desire S forum)
Basically, this thread serves as a place for any discussion, for fellow GSII users to hangout! Feel free to talk about anything!
So let's go! How about we start by introducing ourselves?
Great lets get started

hmmm. well, tbh, not that much high-end anymore. but mid-high,yes,yes indeed.
The only thing i cld complain really at this point is the screen (just resolution, not colours, viewing angles or anything else)
The gpu is still a beast, you can see that if Sammy choose to put same GPU in s3 which is high-end device.
CPU,very nice indeed, no need to talk about chipset anyway, its gonna hold well for solid ammount of time to come.
Anyway. Im 25yo Croatian male, nice to meet you all fellow XDA members.

So I'm usually not the guy that charges his phone overnight and takes it off the charger the next morning, cuz I get paranoid something is gonna happen.
Well I fell asleep last night while the phone was on the charger. When I picked up my phone this morning it was FREAKIN HOT (I mean hotter then it has ever gotten before) and the battery was drained pretty low.
Turned out that my AC adapter went defective overnight and fortunately I had a different AC handy to replace and troubleshoot.

A quick question to you guys:
On average how much screen on like do you manage on your phone with around medium brightness?
I'm getting just over 3 hours, but I'm wondering if I should be getting more. My battery is 1 year old already, so it may have already lost its full capacity.
I'm also swaying between the Anker 1900mah and Official 2000mah. Ideally i'd like to keep the same battery cover.
Any thoughts?

Haven't played a single game or downloaded anything all day and my battery life has been top notch. I only drop 1% overnight so in theory I can stretch 2 days out of this battery.
However, if I was to play some music, games, videos/movies.
My battery would be dead within the day.
So top tip. If you want your phone to last more than a day! Don't play games.

Exactly!, battery use depends on what you do with the phone, if you do nothing with it then of course its going to last a lot
Also imagine if you have to sacrifice all use, features and games with a 3000mah phone, then iphone users shouldn't even bother

Not all phones drain quickly when used for playing games, especially light games.
Point i'm making here is that any kind of remotely intensive cpu usage simply kills the battery on the z1, it's like it's going at full chat for no reason, i think it could be managed better on a kernel level that's all.
1 day 11minutes, 20% left.
Made a tonne of calls, played music, messaging, no games.

HTC One, Galaxy S3, Evo 3D, Sensation, Desire HD, Lumia 800. to name but a few, none of these ate away at the battery anywhere near as much as the Z1 did. I'm not saying that the battery on these devices was great but the drain when doing intensive tasks wasn't anywhere near as bad as it seems to be on the Z1.
I've owned the One and the S3, and totally different experience than you. Battery life wasn't as good as the Z1 regardless of activity. Maybe you should investigate whether yours needs replacing.

But with the Z1. Its like a craze that EVERYONE must complain about something wrong with it. What is with all the hate and/or stupid complaints about the Z1? Do Sony device owners assume that since the design is perfect everything else should be? There isn't and never will be a truly perfect device.
So why don't you guys (everyone not just the OP) just quit complaining and enjoy this amazing device. Its an amazing phone overall.

Seriously dude, this has to be the worst forum on XDA for making a statement, people are ready to gun you down the second you say something negative about the device.
Play bloody candy crush or a simple game for 20 minutes and watch your battery just disappear.
moderate usage light games 4hrs screen on 1 day 10 hrs 10% left 1 hr of voice calling when am at work i cant use the phone so that when i leave it on stamina mode [email protected]!!!!loving the battery life!!!
Lol, I went camping not so long ago and disabled all network and mobile connections and the phone lasted about 4 days!! Since there was no cell coverage where I was it was pointless draining the battery while constantly searching for networks. My main use for the phone was as a camera and I took A LOT of high res pics.
To @dladz, I guess ppl are bashing you because its kinda common sense that battery drain will be high whilst playing games (also this device has a large high def screen which chews battery if its on for a long time), for what its worth, I thank you for trying to be helpful and sharing some positive insight. Just ignore those who are condescending and already have agendas with the device to begin with.
But as stated previously, I agree that a lot of ppl can't seem to find enough reasons to bash this phone. Its as if they bought it primarily to find the faults, lol. I agree its not perfect but then again which phone is? Anyway I'm really happy with it and I find the battery life to be fantastic, better than any smart phone I have ever seen
Xperias aren't carried much by US carriers so in explanation why there appears to be some unordinary bashing, perhaps it's due to ignorance of how good they are, maybe sprinkled with a dash of "if I can't buy it, I'll bash it"
