I was reading that setting your phone to CDMA helps improve battery life. I was wondering what CDMA is and how do I set it to that?
Sent from my Liberty CM7
From what I understand CMDA is a network type not something you can change if you changed that setting your phone would no longer communicate with your carriers towers.

It's killing radio. Like airplane mode. And wont work in CDMA networks as it lacks the hardware needed.

I thought CDMA was 3G. I have GSM and WCDMA. GSM is edge. Which uses less battery life, 3G use gives you less battery time. I may have it backwards. But I don't think so.

WCDMA aint the same as CDMA. WCDMA = UMTS = HSPA (HSDPA+HSUPA) = 3G (ok, not equal, but let's keep it simple). GSM = GPRS = EDGE = 2G. CDMA = Other kind of 2G, EVDO = Other kind of 3G.
That should summarize it all.

In short, all AT&T phones are GSM because the cell tower configuration AT&T uses. Verizon phones, for example, are CDMA because they use a different tower configuration than AT&T, thus why Verizon phones can't work on AT&T. Have you noticed how the new Verizon iPhone had to be slightly readjusted to add extra antenna notches in the corner's that the AT&T iPhone did not have? This is so the Verizon iPhone can be compatible on Verizon's CDMA network.
Yeah ATT uses GSM, it is a newer technology than CDMA
mobile term madness
FYI: while setting your phone to GSM/2G will save battery, you will not be able to use data and voice simultaneously (without wifi anyway) just like Sprint and Verizon users. Maybe no big deal, but happens to be a feature I can't live without.

As far as i'm concerned, 2G = GPRS
2.5G = EDGE, 3G = HSDPA
not sure about 4g though, we don't have it in the UK.
Probably who told you gave false info.
no, whoever told you that is an idiot
if you look on the top bar, on top of the data logo if it says:
G = Then you are on the GPRS mobile network (slow as fark)
E = Edge network (still slow as fark...but at least you're getting somewhere)
H = 3G/4G... the only way to tell is if you go into settings, about phone, network and look under Mobile Network Type
If it says HSDPA...youre on 3G
HSDPA+ = 4G

But in the UK, we can also get 3.5G which equals to 3G+,
So in The US, you don't have 3.5G? You just have 3G or 4G?
Actually, HSDPA+ is 3.5G, not 4G.

Are we supposed to see HSPA+ for 4g in settings?

HTC really screwed the pooch by not including a 3G identifier (even though they show it in the user manual available for download). If my phone showed 3G then I'd be content with the speeds I'm getting. When I see H and only get 3G speeds, makes me feel like I'm not getting what I'm paying for!
I have NEVER seen true 4G connectivity on my phone (or my wife's, or even two demo phones-G2 and MT4G-at a t-mobile store). The only networks that connect to in the Houston area are UMTS and HSDPA, which are both 3G. I've never seen HSPA or HSPA+, strange since Houston and the suburb where I live are supposed to be 4g areas.
As it was explained to me by multiple techs from t-mobile: G=GPRS, E=EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA= 3G, HSPA and HSPA+= 4g
I'm also in a "HSPA+" area and don't see HSPA+ speeds.

I don't know if this true for the wireless industry in general, or if this is particular to T-Mobile, but I've been given a LOT of misinformation from T-Mobile reps over the years. Usually the info was regarding something technical, like this thread is about, but also about things like plans and phone prices. TMO has great customer service as far as the friendliness and helpfulness of their reps, but a lot of the info they give is often inaccurate.

I'm not familiar with how cell data connections work. Will the new att 4g work with an x10i, using hsdpa?
HSPA is touted as 3.5g, if I am not wrong...
Usage of 4G would require an LTE-able phone, like the new HTC thunderbolt.
I'm not a pro at cellular networks too, just sharing my understanding through what I have read around the web.

HSPA+ and LTE are both part of AT&t's 4G plan. You need a 4G capable phone to get either, X10 will not work.
I work in the cellular world. The understanding of 4g vs lte can be hard to grasp. Think of LTE as (long term evolution). companies like Verizon and AT&T won't have to invest much additional to the development of 4g or the expansion into what the next level will be. The LTE platform is designed to grow and stretch with the demand.

Hi, im in Jamaica, using my HTC MyTouch 4 G but unfortunately my phone refuse to connect to more than EDGE speed on any of the mobile network, it is unlocked & therefore able to use any SIM but no matter which networks i connect to this phone refuse to go any faster than edge. Today I tried my SIM in another phone which is an Iphone 3G, and it instantly picked up 3G speed so it prove that the problem is with my phone & not the networks, can anybody give some advice? Did you do factory restore settings.. or just factory reset the whole phone..ooh are you on Android 2.1 or 2.3. Also go to network mode and see if its not on GSM only.

the mytouch 4g and all other tmobile phones will only have 3g/4g on tmobile networks. this is because the bands that the mytouch 4g and other tmobile devices have are different from most of the world's. so unless another carrier has the same bands as tmobile, 1700/2100/AWS, EDGE will be the fastest you get. the iPhone 3G is capable of 3G because it's band is the same as most of the world's carriers network bands for 3G: 850 / 1900 / 2100.
this doesn't have anything to do with factory resetting the phone or whatever. it is simply hardware.
hope this sheds some light for you.

The reason it worked in the iPhone is that T-Mobile and att use different 3g bands and the hardware in those phones is only setup to work on those bands. Before you buy a phone, unlocked you should find out what bands your local networks use.

Just some semantics: "most of the world" uses 2100 band, which makes MT4G compatible with most existing networks in Europe and around the world. Americas (both North and South), on the other hand, happen to use mostly 850 and 1900 bands, uncommon in the rest of the world, which are indeed incompatible with MT4G.
Am still confused.. even some people and parts of the united states people still fall on or can't get pass edge..anyway...

As long as you don't have a compatible-band cellular tower of your carrier in vicinity, you won't get 3G. Not all cellular towers support 3G.
And if your carrier's band(s) aren't compatible, then you never get 3G.

Nope. Some phones are restricted to certain bands by software (radio build), but unfortunately this restriction seems to be in HW.

With some God like skills you may be able to remove the HW antenna from a T-Mobile phone and replace the one in this phone. While I would not suggest it. I didn't want to tell you there was NO way to do it.
I hope someone in this thread can answer the same kinda question for me, but in a different way. Right now I'm in the United States on Simple Mobile's 40$ 3G Plan, but I noticed on my MyTouch 4G (Running the latest RoyalGinger) that I am connected at 4G speeds, however shouldn't my indicator for Data/internet connector on the phone read off as 3G instead of 4G? When i ran a bandwidth test on my phone from DSL Reports Mobile Speed Test, I got the following from a 100k file.
124 kbit/sec
0.287s latency
6.72s d/l time
Is that how fast 3G usually is? or should I be going faster? Thanks to anyone who can help.

hmmm, did a little research, touche sir, but it's not really that great
"SV-DO is terrible on battery life, though. It requires activating two separate Tx/Rx antenna structures as CDMA antennas. That means that only 4G LTE devices can do this, since all Sprint 4G LTE devices have EV-DO/LTE antennas. But, because of how inefficient SV-DO is, it eats a little bit over 50% more than the CDMA2000 1X/LTE radio combination would."
The HTC Thunderbolt does EVDO SMS/phonecalls somehow but I forget how.

Sprints CDMA network is, like you said split up into several parts. 1xRTT is for audio transmission and the first generation technology and EvDO which stands for "Evolution: data only" is the second. EvDO only supports data communications, therefore when you make a phone call your radio which is tuned to the 1.25 MHz spectrum changes to 1xRTT. Since your making a call you must be in 1xRTT and therefore cannot be in EvDO frequency to obtain data at the same time. With LTE/WiMax the phones contain a secondary cell radio that can communicate at the same time as the voice call is being made. The same process involves calling while connected to WiFi.
Long story short, a radio in CDMA standards can only act as a voice or a data radio at one point in time. If you have more than one radio then you can connect to different services simultaneously however at a loss to battery life.

Yes I'm getting fast speeds but I can't help but wonder why this is happening. I mentioned that I'm with MTS so I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. I'm pretty sure it isn't the towers cause my friends iPhone 5 is running off LTE and he live about 5 minutes away from my house. I've also been at distances one minute away from his house and did not pick up LTE then either. I don't know much about bands or frequencies but my carrier just launched the Galaxy S3's and they run off LTE and I'm assuming the Note 2 has the same hardware. S3: 700 (Band 17), 1700/2100 (AWS) MHz , Note 2: 700(band 17) 850 AWS 1,900(band 2). I'm clueless as to what those numbers mean but i'm guessing the important thing is Band 17, right?
Try going near his house then. Or have you checked the network settings? You may have to flash something.

I have to no avail. I had a friend try to help me out over the phone with network settings and his phone appears to have a setting that mine does not. When he goes into settings > wireless and network more settings > mobile network there is an option for him to toggle between LTE, HSPA+ etc. My phone doesn't have that for some reason. All that's listed is Mobile data, data roaming, Access point names, and network operators. Nothing to toggle between networks, which is probably what I need to enable LTE. I have no idea why that setting would be absent from my device. My friend was using an S3 on the same operating system as me btw.
From what i can tell it's the frequencies . The frequencies your device have seem to be different than the frequencies the s3 have on your carrier. If it's not that then you can check your apn settings.

What model is your phone, and what model is his phone. You said you brought your phone from a competing carrier who is likely using alternate frequencies that your phone might not be picking up either due to hardware or software limitations. Without knowing the hardware, and where it came from in the first place, we can't figure out what frequencies your phone is looking for and can't answer your question effectively.
download an app that will show you what is the type of connection you are actually on.
I think that maybe its the matter of incorrect icon.
