Today I went to the head tmobile store to change out my mytouch sim card because I thought I wasn't receiving 4G signal.. so I decide to ask how do I know if I'm on 4G or 3g and I was told edge is 3g H is 4G?!?!? Is this true?

As far as i'm concerned, 2G = GPRS
2.5G = EDGE, 3G = HSDPA
not sure about 4g though, we don't have it in the UK.
Probably who told you gave false info.
no, whoever told you that is an idiot
if you look on the top bar, on top of the data logo if it says:
G = Then you are on the GPRS mobile network (slow as fark)
E = Edge network (still slow as fark...but at least you're getting somewhere)
H = 3G/4G... the only way to tell is if you go into settings, about phone, network and look under Mobile Network Type
If it says HSDPA...youre on 3G
HSDPA+ = 4G

But in the UK, we can also get 3.5G which equals to 3G+,
So in The US, you don't have 3.5G? You just have 3G or 4G?
Actually, HSDPA+ is 3.5G, not 4G.

Are we supposed to see HSPA+ for 4g in settings?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
HTC really screwed the pooch by not including a 3G identifier (even though they show it in the user manual available for download). If my phone showed 3G then I'd be content with the speeds I'm getting. When I see H and only get 3G speeds, makes me feel like I'm not getting what I'm paying for!
I have NEVER seen true 4G connectivity on my phone (or my wife's, or even two demo phones-G2 and MT4G-at a t-mobile store). The only networks that connect to in the Houston area are UMTS and HSDPA, which are both 3G. I've never seen HSPA or HSPA+, strange since Houston and the suburb where I live are supposed to be 4g areas.
As it was explained to me by multiple techs from t-mobile: G=GPRS, E=EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA= 3G, HSPA and HSPA+= 4g
I'm also in a "HSPA+" area and don't see HSPA+ speeds.

I don't know if this true for the wireless industry in general, or if this is particular to T-Mobile, but I've been given a LOT of misinformation from T-Mobile reps over the years. Usually the info was regarding something technical, like this thread is about, but also about things like plans and phone prices. TMO has great customer service as far as the friendliness and helpfulness of their reps, but a lot of the info they give is often inaccurate.

Well, not sure if anyone else has had this issue with their G2 yet, but I got mine today and found that the 3G/HSPA+ (I'm in Austin and we're an HSPA+ location) doesn't work. Edge is working fine, wireless works fine, but I had no hi speed data.
Spent a while on the phone with T-Mobile and they tried everything. Swapped SIM cards for the new one, master reset, checked my coverage area, checked my account, etc. No dice. Phone has been deemed defective. Grrr...my brand new G2 birthday gift. Oh well, replacement is being shipped out.
oh that just sucks... oooooooo i need to get home and open mine also now! and pray for the H lol... hspa+ area also
I live in charleston SC, we do not have HSPA+ just 3G. My phone shows the "H" when on 3G, how are ever going to tell if we are on 3G or HSPA+?
The "H" means you definitely have HSPA. The only way you'll know the difference between HSPA and HSPA+ is probably the speed. Unless there's something in the testing menu that shows you the difference.

it should actually say "H+" if you in a HSPA+ area
The user manual actually says that it will show the H if you're on the HSPA, HSPA+, or 3G network.. so I don't know how we'll be able to tell unless we speedtest it.

This is the one single aspect about the G2 that kicks the N1's butt. The 3G connection and radio reliability is awesome! Everything else is a wash for me. I'm actually starting to like the keyboard a little, too.

Telus 3G icon and H icon
If I can ask for one more clarification.
Up here in the Great White North I am with Telus who has HSPA+ coverage in my area : Montreal (no 2G available at all)
The icon on my Desire shows 3G unless I am accessing data then it flashes the H with the up and down arrows.
I am assume this is correct and the "H" only makes an appearance when it needs to access the data network. The rest of the time it stays as 3G
Important today as they had major connection issues and the H was not appearing even when I was trying to browse or update Facebook.

Yeah. I've seen speedtests on youtube and the G2 has been so disappointing. I was all excited to see 8Mb download speeds then it gets... 600Kb? WTF is that?
Heck, in one video the dude tests the G1 and G2 side by side in Speedtest and the G1 won! This is enraging! HSPA+ is T-Mobiles biggest marketing tool right now yet they made no effort to even see if it worked.
I been seeing lately the the new Mytouch HD has also been dubbed the Mytouch 4G which kinda makes no sense to me. My Mytouch Slide picks up the HSPA± signal alost everywhere I go (except in my house of course :l ) and from what I've read that's the only, techicnally 4G network, that T-mo plans to put out. So the MTHD being called the MT4G seems silly. Unless there's something I don't know,in which one of the great members of XDA could fill me in on =D
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
While you can use the HSPA+ network and will see some boost, the Slide isn't made to handle the full bandwidth available to it. If you were to use it and the 4G side be side, I'm sure you'd see a considerable difference.
We can use towers that are rated 4G but will never reach the 21.1 Mbps. I thought hspa+ was their high end 4G, and standard 4G was just hspa. I only say that because UTMS is 3G, not hspa.
Except HSPA and HSPA+ are really expanded 3G services. 4G is LTE and Wimax. It's just that sprint's wimax is so slow.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Well if you want to be technical, as it stands neither LTE or WiMax are 4G compliant.
Remember, when the iPhone 4g (or was it 3g?) came out, it was ONLY a name, it did not mean it supported 4g (or 3g) speeds...

The only other option you have is to grab the "Mobile Signal Widget" from the Android Market. That will accurately tell you your signal strength and what connection signal you're surfing. I.E it'll show 3G if you're on 3G and H if you're on HSPA+.

If you want to be "honest about it" Speed requirements for 4G are the peak download speeds are 100Mbits/S for mobile means of communications. HSPA+ is only capable of speeds around 56Mbits/S download.
Technically they (the ITU) have stated our current technology is "4G". but it all honesty, it's only like 3.8G.
Normally that would be true but now legally due to the recent FFC ruling HSPA+ is considered 4G as part of another marketing gimmick by wireless provider. As they all wanted to push for it so now HSPA+ 21 now divide that by half is actually capped on the phone now divide that by half again and thats your actual speed lol. This is why TMo got away with claiming to be the largest 4G network in USA lol hence no one revolted not Sprint or Verizon as TMo beat them at their own game. As delivering 4G in 2010 is just another inside joke you won't believe how many morons would pay or upgrade their dataplan thinking 4G is better without actually getting anything IRL. I had an idiot who argue with me he was getting 4G service on a device that was not even 4G capable. I had to explain to him he is benefiting from the network upgrade but its still HSPA.

try testing your speed. just because the 3g icon is displayed doesn't mean you're getting it. and the contract between sprint and verizon stipulates that sprint customers roaming on verizons network are restricted to 1x speeds.
