This is the word on the 4G forum here on XDA! Hope this soon leads to the incredible root but for now ill just be jealous.

P.S. Thanks to anyone working on incredible root.
i was equally as upset hope this helps us out
nevermind if you go to the source: http://grack.com/blog/2010/05/23/root-on-an-htc-evo-4g/
they state "At this time, we believe that this specific exploit cannot be applied to Incredible."
Darn that really sucks

Boo!
When I read the news on engadget, I had the warm and fuzzies. Same android build. Same sense. CDMA radio. Rooted! What a downer!
How can we get an INC into these guys hands? I'd be willing to donate some cash if it helps.

Lol not like it would hurt, that **** already full of spam and beggers haha
it was somthing in the bootloader that found that the incredible does not have. But rest assured that its bieng worked on and im sure we will have root.
nah, it wasn't the bootloader
looks to me like he flashed a leaked image based on where he starts the video and seeing how he doesnt show us the bootloader or anything involving recovery/fastboot. My guess is that since this was an evo prerelease is that someone at htc with the shipping rom weasled a su apk in there while also having the test keys to sign. I never see anyone talking on irc and i assume we are months away from root.
edit: after looking on the website it seems as if they have done deeper work than i assumed. I believe there may be similarities in what they did and what we need. He mentions that he used his linux background and knowldge of hacking bootloaders. maybe something is in store for us unlucky incredible users
nope it has been stated that it will not work for us. And it looks like my bootloader theroy is wrong..... mmmmm i wonder what it could be.
are you judging by this little footnote? "At this time, we believe that this specific exploit cannot be applied to Incredible." - taken from grack.com . If they did anything to the bootloader i would assume an exploit can be derrived from this method. we dont need to use their entire method. From what i hear their bootloader is a higher version than ours which should make it more difficult to crack. If they ever release how they did it Im sure we can find some hope to help us.

Knowledge is power and not sure what was up your rear when posting but any bit of information on semi similar phones never hurt anyone. Seeing how this isn't a post about an accessory app theme maybe could go into general but this is more of developmental news then general.
Well, I at least feel better knowing others are going through the same "pain" I am faced with. I'll donate my time and resources (I still don't have the Incredible thx to it being sold out everywhere... maybe I will try the Best Buy closest to me... although they kind of stink, they don't even carry any Apple computers while most ever other BB does) to get this fix0rz for the peeple!

Nothing to do with test keys, no leaked images. There is no way to modify it to the incredible.
lol, I knew it was going to be rooted before, but I had some hopes it could have been used to help with the root for the Incredible. Oh well, such is life. I'm sure there are some Verizon Android developers that are still working on this....All the give me root and where's the root and other I want root spamming is not going to help with anything other than the continuous spamming of this section.
I really hate this waiting for the Unlockers/Root for any phone as it's nothing but spamming.
Just be patient and it will come. Then it's time for you to show your gratification to the developers for their hardwork that I'm sure most do in their spare time and not as their source of income...
[Insert some more I want root spam after this message]
Sorry but I am skeptical about this OTA. So I'd like to start a poll on who has actually been prompted and/or received it.
what are you skeptical about ? it existing ?
what would make you skeptical of this ?

The fact that only 1 person has received it.
I haven't gotten it, but I'm not sure I'd even see it since I renamed otacerts just in case they did this.
I guess I'll wait a little longer to be skeptical...considering only 1 person on THIS forum says they recieved it. That doesn't mean only 1 person recieved it.
Plus, with all the users here running custom roms already, how many of us are even going to see it pushed to thier phones ? I know it won't come up on mine at all because of that.
We'll see...maybe it's real, maybe it's not but I think it may be a little early to think otherwise.

I think the OP is just trying to see if anyone else gets it. If someone does get it and doesn't have clockworkmod recovery, be sure to logcat so we can get the file.
If you have clockwork recovery you should be able to accept the update, because cwm won't flash it but the update will stay on your sdcard.
if any of you want, ill be more than happy to demo the damn thing with a damn webcam as proof the screenshot isnt photoshoped.
I don't know if anyone seen this but Verizon tweeted something earlier today too about sharing your data connection....it seems to fit the update giving WiFi hotspot. I could be a dummy but I believe the guy. Hopefully more people will see it soon.

Ok, so I was going a lot of playing around with my phone last night. On the scale of hacking, I am not even in the same realm as the skilled folks here. I tinker with things now and then... and sometimes I get ideas... like now.
So, my EVO is setup to work with my corp exchange server for work emails. I noticed that under Settings / Security / Select Device Administrators, the exchange security policy is in there. This section also seems to suggest that you can "add / remove" but it appears to only allow removal from the UI.
Then I got to some more thinking... an app essentially installed itself and granted itself this right. Why cant we study what that app is doing a do something similar? Or at a minimum, exploit those very roles that are already there on the device?
Am I even thinking along the right lines? Or am I way off?
Makes sense to me but I'm also a novice but good contribution dude. Maybe it could get the ball rolling on this thing.

heck yeah, cause it's long overdue. You even mention 2.2 root in here, and you get barked at like you're in "The Village" and that is "the thing of which we don't speak." LOL
Well, frankly, it's the only reason I check XDA daily: to see if someone finally rooted 2.2, so like it or not, it's gonna be what many people are waiting for....
So, way to go on the idea. This at least gives hope that we are still looking for an exploit.

Come on, you know that's not true. The reason people get crap for asking about rooting 2.2 is that the info and answers are all already here on the front pages.
But I like that people are still thinking and suggesting like the OP. That's how things are going to keep moving.

So... thanks for the chime-ins on the idea. I thought it was a good one too. I am curious now to see what one of the big hackers has to say about it. Knowing my luck, it would be a squashed dream.

Just had an idea ( warning I am a noob.) So the previews exploit was found by running flash. If any developer can create an app and install the old flash to allow the old exploit. Then this will allow us to flash.

Not to burst your bubble or anything, but I'm pretty sure this is mostly related to corporate security so that IT can lock the phone down even more than carriers/manufacturers do. Think stuff like not being able to install apps, email restrictions, password management, etc.
Breaking this security feature will at most give you the access non-corporate users enjoy with their unrooted phones.
I'm sure there are plenty of dev's looking for exploits on a daily basis. No need to get peoples hopes up early is why there isn't much talk about it. Same reason people get dumped on for asking on a daily basis. If there was one found already it would be posted so quit asking sort of issue.
I like the thoughts though.

To further derail this thread, this "easter egg" is actually a feature from Google, the reasoning being that is probably better to send a nonsensical word over a swear word in case you didn't actually mean to write the swear word.

Sorry... I hate to be off topic, but this sparked a memory. I was sending my wife a txt a couple weeks ago and I can't remember the word I was typing, but it was definitely a legitimate word--no reason for Android to mess with it anyway. It effectively turned that word into "gay"...go figure.
Like sk63 said, that just relates to the Exchange admin role. Nothing to do with root access on the device.

So, for the point about exchange administration... I am aware of what it is used for... since I myself am a user of it. My point was that it has administrative power over the phone since it can perform a wipe (among other highly privileged tasks)... so the idea was to try and use that system somehow to exploit.
I also liked the thinking behind installing old flash. That is at least a good question. One that I would love to hear the answer to.

Wow! So (1) we aren't allowed to make any kind of new thread about 2.2 and rooting and (2) we can't share ideas about possible exploits, at least not in your presence.
I gotta say, kick me, kill me, put me on probation, but you are truly one GIANT ASS. Who put you on that high horse? What an Asshole. Hey, what prompted you to open this thread? Was it to review some interesting literature tied to an intriguing title, or did you open it knowing full well when you clicked that you were going to scroll to the bottom and post the most close-minded, rude, obtrusive comment you could think of?
I've recently upgraded to the newest ROOTED OTA GB for my DROID X and noticed that my Wireless Tether no longer works.
Instead it directs me to the Verizon Customer Service site where it shows pricing for their tether plans.
Is anyone else having this issue??
That is because you are not paying for the service. It is a paid service and they are able to track if you are trying to do it. Solution: don't tether, or pay for it
incredibly unhelpful.......they're sucking enough money out of us already for the data plans on both the phones and tablets, i see no reason for them to get more money out of me for a small amount of tethering. Especially if I've never come close to using even 3/4 of the data my plans allow.
any other answers out there, minus the self-righteous undertones?

I find it so funny that a lot of the same people that are rooting, loading roms, and tethering are now all snotty about it with the little "well you're stealing buddy, its unapproved, youre not holding it right, blah blah blah I'm a dirty whore" bs. To be completely honest, I do not support this attitude eeither even though I am one who was just guilty of it. This is just what everything is turning into. When people ask questions that have been answered days ago (no offence in any way to OP, just trying to make a point) by the person giving us information, we tend to be annoyed be people who don't know the answer to these things because we think it is obvious and we've already answered questions on it several times. And another reason that we have so much of this is just that SO MANY threads have been made about whether or not someone could tether or why it's not working. Personally, I visit these forums several times a day because I have no life and I guess I just got sick of seeing thread after thread after thread on this subject. I apologize for my attitude
You might try the workaround that was used for the official wifi tether where you disable and re-enable 3G during a tether.
Also you can try going to the wireless tether website and download the experimental 3.0 pre10 version. That was how I got mine to work. It'll have a yellow icon.

I'm just sarcastic so my tone sometimes seems inappropriate. Not to defend the people on here the jump all over others, but some of us have been asked the same question hundreds of times multiple times a day. It's not your fault or any poster of a thread that asks a question. I myself have realized I am less patient. I guess the more you know about a subject you just assume everyone has a base knowledge and that if they don't some people treat others as "lower beings" or something. It never worked for me on 573 or 588. However, there are others that claim success with it. It seems as though it is hit or miss.
As a matter of fact, the first time I flashed 573, wireless tether worked. When I flashed the patch, it stopped working.

I'm running the TBH NVRAM hack and it works for me. Make sure you have the 3.0-pre12 wifi tether app. I have noticed that occasionally i lose tether so toggling airplane mode seems to fix it. Good luck.
The stance that AT&T and Verizon(aka Baby Bell's) are taking with tethering is the same crud cable companies tried to pull by saying you cant have a router with multiple computers attached w/o paying them for it. It's more of the same old telcos trying to return to their glory years driven by monopoly business plans. We don't have to pay them to tether. It's a hardware feature and they don't own the hardware. They charge for data plans. We pay for the the data plans. We can use the data plan however the heck we want. They will lose this battle just like they did with wireline service.
Hi guys, I haven't updated AT ALL. I remember reading somewhere here on XDA that someone had said, "Don't update if you're planning on rooting". But I really hate the software update popping up on me, and I'd like to have better battery from the second update T-Mobile sent out. What are your guys opinions? Will updating really affect any chances of me rooting my snapdragon S7 Edge? Since they update the 'security' of my device?
You need to update. If anything, you will only be able to unlock bootloader after an update where T-mobile allows to do so. They have previously stated they are working with Samsung on a solution. By not updating, you are only depriving yourself of much need software fixes.

Definitely a great update, but I personally update regardless. And if it f**** me, so be it. I'm just saying I've seen others say more NOT to if you plan on rooting. Which I do, but I'm just a dumbass like that! LoL
Think this update made my battery worse tbh. I've been at work for 4 hours now with light usage and it's at 77%. It didn't get that low with heavier usage in same time frame pre update. Haven't installed anything before or after.
I have installed the updates and the overall performance and battery have improved a lot.
All those who buy new phone when it is first released become beta testers. Simple as that.

**** it might as well lol. I'm getting tired of seeing that stupid update notification anyway. I was just really holding back because I wanted to root my phone so I can get snappreffs and I can save dem nudes lol.
I updated after updating my boyfriend's phone. Got jealous. Going to jump soon anyways. Just need $22 more in payments. This device, as stated by many others, is dead and really has no development future. By the time bootloader is unofficially or officially unlocked there will be barely any developers with the phone still. Just enjoy the software updates. Pretty sure you need them for the latest Good Lock to work anyways, which is awesome btw no more quick connect or S search wasting space in my notification bar.

Tell me about it! I miss saving snaps, being able to see a snap forever, and having all the perks of being rooted lol. I've totally forgotten about Casper. How is it? Is it a good alternative to snappreffs? What's the main difference? Can you get caught using it? (Cause I think I've heard that sometimes it doesn't work and they'll get the notification that it screenshotted the picture).

It works pretty well....its a standalone app...no major special filters...but its stable and you download everything like snapprefs so it doesn't send notification of screenshot... Because in all actuality you don't screen shots....Casper logs you out of the snapchat app...so it cannot be used simultaneously... Its a good alternative until we get root access.
