Hi guys, I haven't updated AT ALL. I remember reading somewhere here on XDA that someone had said, "Don't update if you're planning on rooting". But I really hate the software update popping up on me, and I'd like to have better battery from the second update T-Mobile sent out. What are your guys opinions? Will updating really affect any chances of me rooting my snapdragon S7 Edge? Since they update the 'security' of my device?
You need to update. If anything, you will only be able to unlock bootloader after an update where T-mobile allows to do so. They have previously stated they are working with Samsung on a solution. By not updating, you are only depriving yourself of much need software fixes.

Right? Either way I updated didn't take me a second to think about it because of root. Pfst if you don't want the fixes that the updates have pushed out then ok. But I'm telling you my battery life! Now I get really good 4 to 5 hours of normal use. I'm happy before the update I'd get 330 to 4 hours

It's a good update. Its 4pm and I have 68% remaining. Before the update I would have had about 38%
Usage is consistent. No real bug that I have noticed.

The update also fixes the overly sensitive touch screen. Definitely worth it. Also, if you're hoping for root to get ad blocking, check out netguard.

Definitely a great update, but I personally update regardless. And if it f**** me, so be it. I'm just saying I've seen others say more NOT to if you plan on rooting. Which I do, but I'm just a dumbass like that! LoL
Think this update made my battery worse tbh. I've been at work for 4 hours now with light usage and it's at 77%. It didn't get that low with heavier usage in same time frame pre update. Haven't installed anything before or after.
I have installed the updates and the overall performance and battery have improved a lot.
All those who buy new phone when it is first released become beta testers. Simple as that.

**** it might as well lol. I'm getting tired of seeing that stupid update notification anyway. I was just really holding back because I wanted to root my phone so I can get snappreffs and I can save dem nudes lol.
I updated after updating my boyfriend's phone. Got jealous. Going to jump soon anyways. Just need $22 more in payments. This device, as stated by many others, is dead and really has no development future. By the time bootloader is unofficially or officially unlocked there will be barely any developers with the phone still. Just enjoy the software updates. Pretty sure you need them for the latest Good Lock to work anyways, which is awesome btw no more quick connect or S search wasting space in my notification bar.

Tell me about it! I miss saving snaps, being able to see a snap forever, and having all the perks of being rooted lol. I've totally forgotten about Casper. How is it? Is it a good alternative to snappreffs? What's the main difference? Can you get caught using it? It works pretty well....its a standalone app...no major special filters...but its stable and you download everything like snapprefs so it doesn't send notification of screenshot... Because in all actuality you don't screen shots....Casper logs you out of the snapchat app...so it cannot be used simultaneously... Its a good alternative until we get root access.

If I apply the OTA update do you think that Sprint will re-block ROOT access? (Just like they did with OTA update on 6/4/2010). I know its hard to tell since the update isnt out yet, but do you think the chances are high that they will?

Doesn't matter, all the good stuff will be stripped out.
Even if they do block it, phones aren't shipping with it, so only those who update without paying attention to the warnings will be affected.
I know this is semi-unrelated but where is the evidence to suggest froyo is coming tomorrow? I would pretty much jump for joy right now if this appeared to be true, but I wont be too disappointed if there is none.
Just wondering!
The update is not rumored to be froyo, it's supposed to be a maintenance release to fix a few issues.

Hi guys! I am new to the android world coming from windows mobile where OTA updates didn't exist. So I am curious to learn how this works. Does it just update itself? Do I have to do anything?
Also this is abit off topic but is there a file explorer that comes with android or do I have to download an app?
You will get a popup window asking you if you want to update to xx.xxx.x.xxxx.
You can choose, yes or no.

Wifi can't be fixed. Can give to more juice to boost power, but reduce battery life. Or HTC can be magical like Apple and just change all the bars to full signal. For the most part, the current weak signal issue is a display issue.
If this OTA fixes grounding issue and patches HTC's network/battery draining Friendsteam, it would be considered a sucess.

The "Better battery life" was quoted out of context, it only applies to people using facebook app. "Addresses Social Networking Sync issue with Facebook application which can improve battery performance"
So is this update pretty much useless? I think ill pass if it doesnt really fix anything but wifi

I dont get it. Why does everyone keep mentioning the original OTA blocked ROOT?
Did the OTA on 6/4/2010 and still used the same Toast root as everyone else.
The only thing that broke was Unrevoked and that was likely due to an incidental change of system files that they depended on initially.
Doubt the next OTA will do anything on purpose to root methods either.
It wouldn't surprise me if they close the root loophole in the OTA particularly since HTC has gotten so much backlash over the 30fps limit and how much the devs are embarrassing them with the whole thing.
Custom ROMs will all be based off the OTA just like the first one, so I don't see what people are worried about. You keep your root and get the benefits.

I have this really really really really powerfully nagging doubt about that, but I am also hoping.
I got this phone in early Sept. Running it completely stock except using Launcher Pro Plus. Haven't rooted it because it's hardware locked. I read that all the customers will get the update by the end of October. Am I the only one that hasn't received their update officially over the air? Should I just wait a couple more days?
I just tried dialing *#*#8736364#*#* to start software update and just got connecting to DM something in notification bar. That went away after a couple mins. and tried start software update again. Got the same results.
I would wait a few days and if by Nov 1st you don't get the update then you can call your carrier and ask them to force it to your phone.
Or you could just do it manually, which honestly I suggest, because I just like many others , got a soft brick when I installed the update over the air.
You can use the software that Samsung put out, Mini Klies , to apply the update.
here's the link: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=341559
I encountered a strange issue updating through mini kies. All went well, and my phone was running sluggishly so I did a reset and my build number went back to'eclair' but my baseband stayed ji6. I odin'd back to stock and I might just wait for the ota

Honestly, if you want to take an hour or two to read up on it, it's really easy to get rid of the hardware lock by flashing a fix through Odin. Yeah, it's daunting at first, but I took the plunge and now I'm a ROM-flashing whore. You probably don't need to read that much, but I did just because of my cautious nature. There's a thread in the Development forum with the fix and instructions.
My take is that it's far more likely the OTA will mess you up than using Odin (use v1.3!). Once you remove the lock, it's *almost* impossible to brick this bad boy.

Heh, I came from an ancient Blackberry, if that makes you feel better.
But yeah, using Odin is stupid easy (but you need to be on Windows AFAIK). Just to give you a quick overview of what you'll need to do, you need to download
1) the Samsung phone drivers,
2) Odin 1.3,
3) the hardware lock fix, and
4) the Android SDK (just for adb, which is like a terminal program that you use to boot your phone into download or recovery mode; since a hardware locked phone can't get into download or recovery with the buttons, you use adb to force it to reboot into download or recovery).
Use adb to boot your Vibrant into download mode, drop the right file into Odin and go. There are actually good Youtube videos on using Odin too (can you tell I researched the crap out of this before risking it?).

I think most people have taken them by now. Also since this is the wifi version and isn't tied to carriers, It might be easier to unlock. But then again samsung knox makes everything questionable.
Doubt they have someone sitting around looking for exploits at samsung. I mean if apple fixes exploits after jailbreaks and not before I doubt samsung does

Since we don't have any exploits yet, Its unlikely for samsung to discover and block them on their own.
Yeah, we don't even have root yet! There weren't any exploits patched that we know of, since we haven't even found an exploit in the first place!
I'm going for it. i don't think iv'e even heard of anyone attempting to root yet. I'll bet the update won't effect root. They mentioned stability updates, not security update.

I haven't taken either yet. I was worried about getting the path to root blocked and I have been happy so far. The reasoning here seems sound though. No exploit so no reason to block.... I'll take em then.
you guys are most likely right, but i'm paranoid after the s4 incident.
root requires existing exploits. if you already have root you don't need the exploit present. when you patch, you do just that you patch holes, performances, issues. the patches don't really tell you much of anything anything. i'd just feel better off not patching yet after what happened to the s4. efuse got blown on down low. i never took that "performance" update either.
I don't think this OTA update has a placebo effect It's pretty fast...
It did turn my transitions back on in the developer settings but I am keeping them on because it is wicked smooth and fast now. It wasn't that bad before but I see a noticeable difference imo.
I also noticed there is less time from when I hit the power button and when the screen comes on. Much faster!
How about you guys and gals???

One thing I have noticed is that if I set phone down I get full bars and good speeds. As soon as I pick up phone it drops to the smallest bar and speeds go to 2-3mbs. Im hoping lolliepop fixes it.
This is one of the first phones that I have not had the immediate urge to root. Its been a month and I am only starting to think about root and it really only to get rid of a few things like the volume warning and the airplane mode warning (Why do they even have that).

If you update it via Odin, yes you'll most likely lose root. But then you take two minutes out of your life and reroot it. At least that's how easy it was with the note 3
I dont know how half of the people on here make it across the street and live another day to tell about it.
No sh=t. After the update the root method we have may not work. Once we have confirmed that ROOT WORKS. Then I will take upgrade. And then take 2 minutes out of my life and reroot it.
Ive seen a many of updates that broke root. Those that took update had to wait till root was done for the update. I want to keep root.
And I dont know how all these snobs on the forums have a life. Always looking down your nose at others that may not have your experience in this hobby. Always making snobish comments to try to tear down instead of building up in this so called hobby.

Good news is that it is now up on Sammobile. Unfortunately it's going to take like a week to download

So that is the N950U1, I've only been looking at N950U... are they technically the same?
Also, I see CRF6 which I guess I could technically install to get on the install path, but the latest is CRG9.
I'm about halfway with my download from SamMobile, did you go the route from updato?
I actually just sent mine out for warranty it had screen burn figures this would become available quite literally the day after I ship my phone out..

Haha of course. Well I only have about an hour left, I can upload it to a faster host if you still need it when you receive your phone back.

I'm pretty sure his phone will come back with the latest update on it anyway.. They did it to mine even when I asked them not to update it. They obviously didn't care and updated it anyway..

Try using the N950USQU5CRH6, you'll need to download and flash it yourself.. I'm using that and I get close to 1 hour for every 10% of battery life I'm also using package disabler pro to.
Where did you find CRH6 to download?

My Bat drained to 1% just before the update so I chalked up the poor Bat performance to me letting it drain to far. So thats kinda good news to me cause some way or another Ill fix that.
