More Touch HD woes I'm afraid.......

OK, OK, I know the "issues" folks are having with the HD have been done to death, but I just wanted to add my two penneth to the mix.
My story is unremarkable in that I've bought a HD last week as a replacement for a Kaiser (which went pop and is with HTC for repair as I type), and despite all the glitz and snazz of the huge screen, the slim form, etc, I'm rather missing my 18 month old Kaiser.
The lack of a physical keyboard is the biggest thing I'm struggling to adjust to, which might not be so bad if the software one worked properly. And the number of times the device restarts itself at the most inopportune moment would be frankly laughable if it werent so annoying.
So, I called the retailer and told them of the problems with it restarting itself (8 times yesterday - when texting, when prowsing the web, when reading a Word doc attachment, and numerous times when doing sod all but sitting on my desk!), and they offered to exchange it for me....... except they havent got any in stock!
So, to the crux of my post.... do I insist that the device is not fit for purpose and demand that my deal and airtime agreement is cancelled (I've not put the supplied SIM card in yet so I'm within my rights to cancel, it seems), and wait it out for a Touch Pro2? Or am I just a swapped handset away from Touch HD nirvana?
Your opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated!

All I can say is you may have a dodgy device as mine has never reset itself in the way you describe...
And you can get used to the on-screen keyboard (well I did anyway) pretty fast.. have a play with the different keyboard options. I use the "phone keypad" in T9 mode and am much faster than with the full Qwerty one.

I would honestly have to say... wait for the Touch Pro2. It isn't that far away and you can just use a cheap cell untill that time (I could! ). If your struggling with the onscreen keyboard then the Touch Pro2 will be perfect for you, but still offering a screen size almost like the HD.
I have 1 year to go on my contract so! . But the problems you talked about are not normal, and if you decide not to wait for the Touch Pro2 I would swap it with a other one or file it for repair if you can't swap.

Trouble is HTC are now playing catch up and are releasing kit onto the mass market who in turn are really 'beta' testing hardware & software for HTC.
I used their contact helpline to notify them of a bug/glitch which many other users have as well & I asked for a resolution, bugFIX or update to sort the problem out - I actually got the official reply which basicially said thanks and my raised call was now now closed as I hadn't answered/replied within 15 days.....!!!! I replied the same day fgs !!!
I presume they have massive problems that can't be fixed and do not have any support in place whatsoever, so user & buyer beware - they are buying an unsupported bit of kit - I am now stuck in an 18 month contract with hardware (& software) that is buggy, unsupported, doesn't work properly, and has NO way of being sorted or fixed.........
I've been with wm smartphones from the beginning & HTC when they got 'big'
- now I've got a problem getting out of the contract even though the htc hd IS FAULTY & BUGGY - what a rip off......

I don't understand how you guys buy a phone on a contract and blast the manufacturer (HTC in this case) for having a faulty, buggy phone.
maybe its because you guys don't have the foresight to see that the phones have operator supported apps and crap that isn't part of the original HTC rom.
operators put there own software on to these phones in order to link to their online homepages , etc. My HD came from Telstra and the first thing I did was remove that junk from the phone.
I don't know if you guys want to format your HTC and install fresh software on it, but one things for sure that you can't pass judgment on a product that has useless software put on it by the operator.
This forum is filled with countless happy HD users that continue to mod, upgrade their phones without such problems.
Try giving your phone a second chance by putting software that it was meant to run and not some third party crap.

It does sound like you receivd a bad phone. Every manufacturer has them cross their lineup (Apple too) as no production run is perfect.
Personally I have had my HD for a number of months now and I am not overly gentle with it or to concerned about what software I load. I have never had any of the issues described here (from crashing to paint peeling).
I easily using the compact qwerty keyboard and can type faster on it than on the Kaiser. You will need to decide if you can make the adjustment. I had the same issue in moving from the Wizard to the Elf.

Totally your call. I was used to my hermes keyboard and decoded to go for the HD. At first I was disappointed with a number of things...i.e. no keyboard, no camera flash amongst others. But I knew this before I bought it!!!
It was the same with my Hermes. I got rid of the crap software, rom etc and flashed a better rom, better software and hey presto I had a better phone.
I have also done this with the Balckstone and I'm glad to say I have almost got it to exactly the way I want it!!
There is plenty of 3rd party apps out there to improve your phone, one for example would be finger keyboard 2.1 which almost as good as having a qwerty keyboard.
In the end mate, its your call.

It's your choice but:
I had to send my first one back cos I couldn't get a signal. Orange replaced it no questions and since then I haven't had to reset at all (bout 4 weeks now).
All in all i'm happy with the device and have it running reasonably well with the stock rom with the help of all the people on here. Video, once converted, is superb and high quality for such a device, call quality good, not really tried the camera as I don't take that many pics but office runs fine as I use most of the apps.

Hmmm, sounds like you have a duff phone. Send it back.
I also had a Kaiser which was good but the HD is so much better. I have NEVER had a soft reset unexpectedly.
I do not type huge amounts so the keyboard is not a big need. I do want the slim form factor of the HD.
I had for a few days an early Omnia - this did the mystery soft reset nonsense many times in the short time I had it. I returned it and bought a Tytn II.
HD is really robust, great screen, good battery, and very stable. I recommend you return the bad one you have.

Seriously buddy, I use the Phone Keypad option under SIP and it takes me way back to my old Nokia, I've gone from pissing around with a stupid slide out keyboard on my Kaiser which involved a lot of attention, to walking along touch typing on my Touch HD, the differnece is massive. Slide out keyboards sound like a good idea until you're sitting there interfacing with it like a fecking laptop, that pissed me off.

I must admit I wasn't very impressed with mine when I first got it. I copied some MP3s over to test out music playing and it crashed, and kept crashing. And everything kept crashing: phone app, mail app, music app... Not impressive in the first half hour with nothing else installed!
Anyway since flashing to a different ROM (Dutty 2.6 at the moment) I have had absolutely no problem, so god knows what Orange have done to their ROM.
As for keyboard, try fingerkeyboard and SPB's Keyboard. I can type about as fast as I ever did on my Tytn 2's real keyboard - and without the extra bulk!
(I think I've said before, my Tytn never crashed or needed an unforced reboot once as far as I can recall in 18 months; both my ipods crash regularly, one of them, daily. My conclusion is that the WinMo platform is pretty stable.)
Don't know who your operator is but try and get it changed.

Sorry to hear about your HD problems, like you I was eager to upgrade to what I thinks is a great phone, I got mine as an upgrade but fortunately mine does not have a provider rom in it, its a straight htc phone. had mine 18 days and it stopped charging. Contacted my supplier they where happy to exchange but had no stock, or i could cancell and send phone back.
I contacted HTC, they arranged pickup of phone, did repair, well no they basically replaced everything in the case and sent it back all within 5 days.
Now my phone works great, and the more I read about how adaptable this phone is the more I like it.
as for keybords i have downloaded and tried many, but I now use touchpal compact keyboard, even my large stuby thumbs mange to type quickly.
Send it back get a good one and start again I am sure you will not be dissapointed.
and while I think about it did you now that HTC phones have a manufactures warranty of two years? that means my phone is warranted past my contract period, good news........

So apparently this phone isn't very popular...

I'm having serious contemplations about picking up a TP2 and flashing it over to 6.5 with the Leo Sense UI ROM. With that beautiful keyboard, it almost seems too good to pass up. I can keep the Imagio sidelined for a while until the community grows and we start seeing real customization happen for this device. What do you guys think? Honestly, money isn't an issue and my phone is literally the most important thing I touch all day (aside from my girl, man if she saw this haha) so "wasting" the money isn't something I'm concerned with.
I'd be very happy using the flashed TP2 for several months or longer until the Imagio community picks up, then I can always switch back and Ebay the TP2.
It seems like the Imagio launched with very little push from Verizon; a lot of stores by me don't even carry the device in the store, and I pretended not to own the device and ask about it and they seem to have been told to downplay the Imagio in favor of the Droid. Leaves me scratching my head a bit, but oh well. Honestly I love the Imagio, but the lack of customization and the seemingly small amount of people that have one right now are shying me away over to the TP2. I have too many issues with the stock ROM including the memory issues and apparent GPS problem (it's like using QuickGPS is a necessity and that the GPS won't work without it, very annoying).
Any comments guys? I'm sitting on the Verizon site wondering if pushing the purchase button laying before me on the TP2 will be worth it. That Leo ROM looks too promising >_>.

Ive been having the thought of trading my Imagio for a TP2 or even a Droid cross my mind several of times the past week.
7 More days till I can trade it for anything.
Fairly certain I'm going to keep it as I find it's styling is much better than the TP2's, definitely better than the Droid's, and I like it's thickness.

I have had it over a month now and really like it.There are issues but nothing that will be a deal breaker.I thought about the droid but didnt want to re invent the wheel.I don't regret buying the phone.Having internet email at the touch of a button is very cool.I am happy with my decision

I guess it depends on what you want to do. I'm not particularly interested in cooked roms (for now) so I don't mind the absence. I've been able to customize with tweaks so that the things that bugged me are either gone or invisible. And I find it phenomenally useful for work.

I love this phone!!!
I like that it is not main stream, since I can still use most of the TP2 hacks and make it do all I like, I find my self with a very unique phone that does all and more than I wanted or needed and still look gorgeous. My battery issues are a thing of the past after tweaking the memory some and it is very reliable.
Many use Iphones/Droid and when I pop out my HTC Imagio people still jawdrop off how nice it looks, as americanmetal says, it is thick and feels strong yet perfect size.

Only thing I miss is a hardware keyboard, but this makes up for it nice enough. Other than that, I love my Imagio. I have no idea why it doesn't seem to be popular at all.

Dido, Exactly. Unfortunately, it released in a time when Moto droid commercials where running ramped, the imagio was doomed from the start. Not to mention my fiance and I were exchanging our droid for a new one and the whole store is set up around android. They have a booth with bright colors with the droid and droid eris. It took me searching through the entire store to even find the imagio it was put next to the freakin casio exilim. The only people who buy it are the ones who actually know enough about mobile devices to know that as of right now the imagio is the most functional device in the store. I am finally starting to see imagio ads on sides of websites but honestly it is a bust on the imagio. I think once sprint gets their diamond2, which actually is a whitestone, not a topaz, we'll have more support. Sprint I hope will promote the device, I'm not looking for droid or iphone type bandwagoning, but enough to entice those moderately tech savy.
But let's face it both the imagio and moto droid phones are out of date currently due to the upcoming passion and hd2 so sprint needs to hurry and mobilize the cdma diamond 2. Of course when you buy anything it is immediately out of date. The imagio has a much better chance of staying as current as possible due to flashing than the moto droid, which you can flash new roms, however, there is a limit to what you actually can acheive. this is one of win mo's strong points.

Yeah the fact is, the Imagio is on 1 carrier worldwide and has only been out like 6 weeks. Other devices like the TP2, have been out in other countries, and on more carriers both GSM and CDMA so the support/demand is higher there. It will come, but it will be slower with less overall demand by the userbase.

Droid - No Exchange
I have a friend who just did the opposite and traded in his Droid for the Imagio. The lack of corporate Exchange support was a MAJOR factor in his trade. I traded in my TP2 for an Imagio myself and I'm very happy with it.
Now someone please get the new Sense UI working on this thing!!

Yeah, honestly if I could be using the new Sense UI on my Imagio I'd be much happier.
I don't get why HTC went with WM 6.5, but didn't throw Sense UI on there as well. It seems stupid.

It's all ABOUT the MONEY.
Moto is trying to BUY their way back into the Cell Phone Market
that they lost. Moto is buying TV ads to get back in the game and
who is Moto Promoting - Verizon. If you had a Company Paying for
your Advertising - which product would you push onto Customers.

I just thought it was funny that the add on the top of this page right now is for Windows Phone and it has the tiniest pic of the imagio. You really can't tell what it is even unless you are familiar with it.

My only issue with the Imagio is that it lags, when browsing and moving from app to app. The Exchange support on the Droid is just plain half ass'd. You cannot accept appointments and move emails or see your nested folder stucture. Exchange integration is primary for me so WinMo wins despite its shortcomings. Unfortunately, WinMo has a bad wrap and then forum posters all over just want to follow the crowd.

I've had my Imagio about 2 weeks now and I think it's a fantastic device. Although issues have been posted on this site, most appear to be solvable as the product matures. My biggest issue has been that the phone has no "hold" button.

I'm trialing an imagio for 30 days. Coming from the tp2 which I love I thought it was a no brainer to have basically the same device in a more lightweight package, sans hard kb. I still like to whip out the stylus tho and find it's location on the left side cumbersome. I'm right handed. I am missing my hardware kb also, but hope to get used to not having it in some more days time. I hate getting finger grease/smudges on my beautiful device, So dealing with that. I may find I'm just a hardware keyboard kinda guy. Keeping the tp2 so no worries going back. Was going to try a droid, but I have so many wm apps that would go to waste,I hate to do that. I'm on the fence, love the lesser weight and good looks, but , but, but.......gotta keep going with this trial.
Side note: I'm dealing with the imagio's seemed memory issues and apps like opera not loading fully because of lo mem issues. When I look at my free ram I see an ample amount so I think this a bug. I've heard rumors of a patch that fixes this from htc, nothing solid, but if it becomes a pita then it will go back and tp2 will again reign supreme.

I see more Imagio commercials than Droid commercials now

This is really strange, I know in the on going battle between form and function everyone on this site will always pick form, but lets face it, the iphone is sexy
HTC finally makes a phone with the function of the glorious HTC touch pro 2 and the sexiness of the iphone and its a flop. I mean I really enjoy this phone ( I even signed up for the Vcast TV... Lame I know
It has real open platform availability (not like the iphone or even the droid )
There are tons of reviews about who's browser is better the iphone or the droid, I current have 3!!! browers on my phone ( I just pick which one I like better at the time ) (internet explorer mobile does better at mobile websites then opera or skyfire ). My friends at work were wondering whens flash going to be added to the iphone or droid, so I showed them sky fire

Real FULLY functional exchange support, which some of us NEED!!!!!
ability to run simultaneous apps ( sorry iphone ) ability to EASILY close and running apps (sorry droid, 5 clicks to close an app is way too much)
Yeah I know the droid as the google maps navigation, which is buggy, but it is kool. But its windows mobile, you can purchase your own nav software or download ( from a site that rhymes with ppcTorez ) the windows mobile version of google navigation.

I should give a shot out to the TP2 for having an awesome keyboard, but when I'm watching comedy central on the highway ( not driving of course) while shooting 5 megapixal shots, while the girl in the next car is starring at my oh so sexy phone. I dont feel so bad
Although it does bug me to have to explain to folks all the time its not an Iphone or a blackberry storm!!! Jesus christ Microsoft can we freakin get just one commerical!!
But as much as I love this phone, and I regret sending in the rebate form ( now I cant exchange the phone ) this lack of support from the gods of windows mobile ( in this forum as well as the great guys at ppcgeeks ) means less cool customizations except for the ones we can mooch off the TP2 threads

I like my Imagio. When I went to the standard Windows Phone interface instead of HTC's, my memory issues disappeared. I always have 40-50% of my memory available.
I probably would have gone to the Omnio II if it had been available within my 30 days, just for the faster speed and flash. And the issue of faster speed for me is how fast it rotates when I turn the phone to landscape. Oh well. Otherwise, I'm happy enough.
To me, google nav has the same problem google maps has: you don't always have a 3G signal even with Verizon, and relying on downloading maps as you're moving is...not reliable. I use Garmin XT for nav. Try using Google Nav while you're in the mountains!
Heck, I even got my Imagio Garmin nav to work while I was flying to Philly (in airplane mode no less). Funny seeing that speed indicator at 520mph over Toledo (I was trying to figure out where we were).
Like others, I've certainly impressed some iPhone users with live video via Justin.tv on Skyfire, and they had to gather around my little phone on its funky pop-out stand like everyone else.

I love mine , heavy MS exchange user and it works great . would like to get my tomtom working or at least a really good 3d gps. i put swipe and finger keyboard on it and love the swipe keying. find new apps every day. it really is the phone that gets me.

But................
Here I am 2 weeks later, I'm on my 2nd HD2 (the 1st one wouldn't hold a data connection, so the tech told me to return it) and this one seems more buggy than the 1st one I had.
I want to say I know absolutely ZERO about flashing and ROMs, but I really shouldn't have to for the machine to simply work out of the box.
I again say with a heavy heart I am on my way to the Tmobile store to return it. I love the phone, just wish it would have worked properly out of the box.
Going back to my HTC TP2....maybe one day I will try the HD2 again after all the bugs are worked out.

this is not the kind of post i wanted to read about this phone. has anyone else had this kind of trouble with this handset?

you say buggy....how? im using the stock rom/radio i got when i bought mine, works perfectly, its only my own stupidity that breaks it

Sorry to hear that.
Windows Mobile has never been known as an OS that works perfectly out of the box. This is accentuated further by all the resource hogging crap t-mobile loads on the phone before it ends up in your hands. Flashing the ROM certainly helps things run smoother IMO.
I don't think flashing ROMS is too difficult....no harder than updating the official firmware on my iPhone....Its really just a matter of downloading a few files, syncing up your phone, and running a piece of software. Done.
Jailbreaking an iPhone.....now that is a tough job.

ahh! ok,

I Have had mine a week and the device,especialy loading web pages is sooo slow. My orbit2 is much faster and user friendly. I am even considering switching back to it. So much for snapdragon.

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having...
...I on the other hand am loving my TmoUS HD2. I got mine 9:00am on release day as well and have had zero problems that were not easily fixed.
(The 2nd or 3rd day...I wcould not access the internet....although I did have data...wierd, but that was fixed simply by changing the APN)
My phone is crazy quick (stock ROM and radio / cookies home tab / and a few other simple mods) and I have yet to have a single crash (my rooted android phones...G1, MT3G, and my N1 crash all the flippin time...yet they bash winmo for this).
anyhow...again im sorry...just wish you would give it a bit more time (though I understand that you probably want to make it within the 14 day return period

Stock Rom user with no problems
I don't understand what the original post is complaining about?
I use the stock rom on the HD2 and I still haven't encountered a single problem...
If you don't understand how the phone functions then you will have problems because of your own mistakes... learn about the phone before you buy it...
Unlike the iPhone.. this is not a toy for kids to play with .. you have to know what the heck you are running on the phone and what applications are open .. anyways I don't want to make this a tutorial post...
All I can say is that know the phone before buying it...mine works perfectly fine with stock rom because I manage opened applications properly...

Sorry to hear. I've had mine since release day and loving every minute of it. I have had none of the major issues that people have complained about. Even so, I flashed my ROM to Kumar's Premium 1.5 and it runs even better on it.
The ONLY thing that I know was an issue for me was the HTC/Sense messaging app. If I happen to open that to read or write a message, my phone would start lagging and eventually, freeze up. But if I stayed out of it, the phone ran like a champ. So, I've simply disabled the HTC/Sense messaging and use the Windows text messaging app instead, and so far, so good.
I'm waiting for Kumar to come out with his Titanium ROM so I can try the device without HTC/Sense at all and maybe even try out the SPB Mobile Shell on it. This phone has a TON of potential, but alas, you do have to want to tinker with it to get it to sing the song you want it to sing.
This is one of the reasons I love the HD2 with WinMo. I'm not locked into how the manfacturer or carrier wants the phone to work or look like. There are great chefs here who have really good ideas on how to make a WinMo device run.
In any case, the phone is definitely not for everyone.

Yeah, I gotta say though even out of the box to a total winmo noob this stock rom is very solid. I haven't even bothered to flash yet, just did some registry tweaks that sped up sense a bit, really no problems crashing/freezing and that is with 9k contacts and many games added. A LOT probably comes down to tmo service if changing carriers to get the phone for some people. In my area, though, tmo is slightly better than att and cheaper.

I have had my HD2 for about a week now and everyday I LOVE IT MORE! Seriously I was coming from a Wing so I guess I had a little experience with winmo phones. I am using it straight out of the box with a few games added. A lot of music and a few movies. Only thing I have done to it was cookies home tab + editor and a reset app. Best phone I have ever seen thus far! Obviously there are things that you need to get used to...but for me its worth the effort!

No offense bro, but dont talk to me like Im a child. This has nothing to do with me trying to "play games with a toy" (even though TMoUSA does market the thing as "entertainment on the go"). When the damn thing doesn't come out of sleep mode without pushing the button 30 times, there is a problem, when I have to slide to unlock back and forth, back and forth for long periods of time before it will unlock, there is a problem, when the HTC Sense refuses to load mins after restarting, there is a problem. I am very aware of of what is open and how to close them (on a mind numbing constant basis mind you). I don't see how you can arrogantly assume this is all in human error and not the machine's. Please explain to me how I am supposed to be "aware" of what I'm doing, when the damn thing barely turns on?

I am ecstatic for you that you have not experienced any problems with your device, I wish I was that lucky. All I am saying, is that I wanted to love the phone...but... it simply wouldn't work (TWICE). I did not install any 3rd party apps, I did not alter anything in any way, I always killed the tasks almost immediately after finishing with them (the proper way with the task manager).

I can't stand people like np231. I had to return mine also, the phone lags and going to MUSIC caused it to freeze, scrolling through the album arts is not as smooth as on the iPhone. This is supposedly the 'entaintainment' device that Tmo claims and it can't do the simple things right.

I returned mine also. I bought it on day 1 and used it for almost 2 weeks. The biggest factors for me were the lack of a physical keyboard, terrible battery life and the total abandonment of 6.5 by MS and developers. I also hated the capacitance screen. I went back to my TMO TP2. While at the store I used my upgrade and bought my daughter a Cliq XT.
The HD2 has a beautiful screen but the screen was not big enough for me to type with reasonable speed and accuracy compared to the TP2 keyboard. It was also very susceptible to pocket dialing. When HTC comes out with an android with a decent keyboard I will probably try that.

sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your phone. i was considering one but i would like to us at&t. t-mobile is cheaper than the telstra and tempting to buy. i have a sony xperia x1a on a at&t prepaid and it works great and i think they have the best prepaid, data plan. i rarely ever get any calls and so this is my be solution for me.

I had a lot of the same problems you are experiencing. Thanks to the brains in these forums I have pimped the heck out of my HD2 and my release day excitement has returned. If you want to know how to flash the rom / hack the phone, drop me a line. I can give you the straight forward dumbed down version. I may even write a noob's FAQ that's a little less intimidating than the jumbly ones in here. It's really much easier than it seems. All the posts in these forums can tend to be a bit overwhelming. I am a former iPhone 3g user. I learned how to unlock and jailbreak my phone. That was a chore!! This is much easier. Its no different than owning a Windows PC. Out of the box there is a bunch of crap the company pre-installs on your computer. You just have to learn how to tweak a bit. Don't be intimidated by the brains in here. They are really quite helpful. Now, If we can just figure out how to get Adobe Flash 10 to work on our phones. That would be sweet.

too bad you had such issues. the Hardware on this phone does make it the best on the market. while it's true that things should work perfectly out of the box, life isn't always as it should be.
it's understandable to be frustrated when you pay this amount of $$$ for a phone, but with some research & time you can completely customize this phone like none other.

that's exactly the only problem that I had with my bro's Tmobile HD2. The touch screen keyboard is even worst than the iPhone because of my small fingers and hands. Even worst, the battery is so small, and the OS needs to be developed more than what it is now.
All of this agreed aside from the capacitive screen.
P.S. I think the keyboard sucks not because the screen is small but because you don't have a good physical keyboard like the Touch Pro2.

I tride my friends iphone. The keyboard works just as good as his. It is different for the layout, so maybe that is why you dont like it.
And for those that blame WM for everything. It ain't because of that. If it was, I would have all the issues he has and I don't. Most of the problems I have is either something I didn't know about the new software, or something I added.
Battery life is on par with phones like this. Another friend ownes a Android One. Battery last about a day or so. My old Touch Pro lasted just as long.

My first android mobile

I aiming to buy a second hand G1 as my first android mobile. Was aiming to buy desire, but I use music a lot so waiting for a android walkman from sony erisson . I have a few doubts for my first android mobile,
(1) can the G1 stay in battery for at least 2 days(I don't use 3G, i only use 2 g networks) ?
(2) what is rooting can it reverted back ?
(3) When a android releases a update can I install it right away or should i use a specific one ?
Am using sony ericsson w960i. now cant find good android phone to upgrade

1- its possible, but you would have to keep it at min. brightness etc. The simplest fix is an extended battery, it makes the phone a little heavier but can double or triple battery life.
2- Rooting is access to superuser commands etc. When you are rooted, you can install faster, cooler, better firmwares, or themes, and you can also tether etc. It takes no more then 30 minutes to root, and you can unroot with just one file (rc29). If you do decide to root, go with CM's stable releases, or try a hero rom.
3- You have to install one that is compatible with the G1. for example, android 2.2 froyo was released today but it cannot be installed on your G1 just yet. But that's not something you should worry about, since we have some of the best developers working for us.
And how much are you paying for your G1? check your local craigslist, prices range there from 70-150 for a used one.

Yes, all apps for 2.1 will appear on a 2.1 rom. But G1 won't get 2.1 unless you root first. And 70 to 150 pounds seems like a fir price, just make sure you get a working one.

Hi guys, im thinking one G1 too and leaving forever WM and my Kaiser.
Here im Portugal even in second hand there are a litle bit expansive, as all the HTC are... The cheapest G1 e found is from 130€!
I friend of mine have an Acer with android SO with 1000mhz cpu... First i love HTC, i had 6 models and the possibility of change rom and stuff are brutal. He said that G1 is totally discontinued, and i am afraid that when i update it to the lastest rom available it comes slow :S But ok, it will be always better than an Acer, even not talking about the qwerty keyboard.
The battery of my Kaiser with normal use of GSM, rarely WIFI and some times GPS longs 2 days, i hope G1 too, that's the aceptable for me.
Im accustomed to rom change on WM i hope on android thing thats not hard!
G1 thats not beautiful and thats not ugly, its different, but ok, all the HTC are. Its bigger than Kaiser but smaller than my lovely HTC Universal, maybe the best phone i ever had!
I believe in XDA-Devs forum, i have been using it for 3 years, used more than 50 different roms, i will read all of your possibile and updated reviews with actual roms, because if it would be positive, my thread home will change.

Have you tried out an android rom on your kaiser? You will have a hard time getting more then a day of battery on your G1. I use it a lot, from 7:00 to 3:00 I still have 40% left, but that's with using it for a few hours and some music, in a place with low signal, and no gps or wifi. And a lot of the roms for the G1 are a helluvalot faster then stock, FYI.

No i have not tried that on Kaiser... The border of the lcd makes the touch experience hard, the new htc and the androids are made for finger touch and no stylus, i wanna try that and much more. Im a little bit afraid of the change to a new device, android for example. Im used to wm, my sweet tomtom gps very very powerful, very efficient here in portugal and if g1 suck im screwed. i have th think about it, i think it will be nice some reviews, because all i found in the web was reviews from 2 years ago, and thats nothing, because of the evolution of the roms. its hard to update for a new rom? this week, i will abandon windows and start using linux full time, for WM thats complicated, for android too?

G1 is a good phone to cut your teeth on. I bought one just to try it out before my Upgrade is due and I pick up a desire.
Mine will be hitting ebay soon with an asking price of £95 with delivery ontop.

Oh why? You dont like yours? My Kaiser is not fast, small or pretty, my previous phones too, so...

I also bought a g1 as my first android phone, in fact I still have it and love it, I can't speak to the change in diffaculty in switching roms on a winmo phone but once you do it the first time on android it becomes an addiction

Should I get the HD2?

in a few months I am able to extend my Vodafone Business contract and get the HD2. Currently I own a Touch Diamond and am finally VERY satisfied (after trying several ROMs for 6 months).
I still have some doubts about the HD2, I hope you can help me here:
1. Scratch-resistance of the display and the case.
I heard that the display itself is made of glass. For my diamond, I have a screen protector and a black Bugatti pouch. No scratches till now. So should I even use a pouch/screen protector, or is there no need for it? I am no big fan of those InvisibleShield solutions.
2. Availability and (especially) quality of custom ROMs.
Vodafone ROMs are made to be backed up (just in case of warranty) and then to be deleted. Any good and fast ROMs out there which basically provide an "upgraded stock experience"?
3. microSD
There is one delivered with the phone, but I could not find the size of the storage.
4. Landscape typing
Is it possible (without any greater hacks) to send SMS in landscape-mode? For the Diamond, I always use the standard portrait mode, but I once typed in landscape on an iPhone (phone itself: yuck, but the typing was great).

I use a gel case for the back, leaving the screen exposed and never had problems with scratching; nor worried about it being scratched unlike previous phones ive owned.
I believe it will be a 2GB microSD
Rotate the phone and it will allow typing in SMS screen natively.

in all honesty since you are "very happy" with your diamond, and still gave a few months to run, I'd wait and see what is around closer to the time. the hd2 is great, but its not a day to day phone, its a tinkeres delight, but as a phone its more like a work in progress. (it auto phoned my boss last friday just because I pulled the earphone jack out, it doesn't mute the fm radio when you get texts so you miss them, reception stability in standby is hit and miss..... )
if you want a great grownups toy, do it, if you want a phone, stock with what you are happy with for now.i

great now you guys are giving me buyers remorse...i have bought one, being shipped to me now...all I plan on doing is putting a stock ROM on there and go from there....

While this is true, I'm also pretty certain that HTC will not be pumping out anymore Windows Mobile devices of this caliber. Their next HD2-like successor will be running Windows Phone 7 and not Windows Mobile. This is how they'll get people to pick up the newer OS in the future.
So if you like Windows Mobile for Windows Mobile and want to stick with this OS, I think the HD2 will remain in the limelight for quite some time.

i have now had my HD2 since it got released.. and i agree with the above. It's a great toy but not a very stable user experience i have tried every single ROM out there and still not exited about this phone:...
i have just ordered the desire wich i find to be a much better phone, but with a smaller screen im afraid
when htc evo comes to Europa i will change phone again
i have been a long time windows mobile user, but im done with that now.. i have owned almost 30 phones and have even had an iphone 3g. my favorite OS i must say is android... user experience, stability, and productivity wise, android wins in my book..
in some way i hate to say it cause windows mobile has served me good for a lot of years!

I have the US Tmo version and I am going to return it tomorrow if they still let me (not sure if I am still within the remorse period), I tried really hard to fall in love with winmo again (was an avid Tilt user) but it just doesn't cut it for me anymore

I have a 1.66 WWE Stock ROM and 2.10 radio and I'm not having any problems at all. I don't get why people always say HD2 is unstable. The only problems I'm encountering is what to do next because my HD2 is already running perfectly.

I have to agree with some of the things people are saying in this thread. Way too many people are attracted to the Hd2 because of the massive display, only to be disappointed because "it doesn't work" <-- Laughing at iphone users if you know what I mean.
Unless you are ready to handle a WinMo device, don't get the HD2. It requires too much tinkering in order to make it personally "YOURS" - and I'm not talking about personalization via pages upon pages of square iconic apps. *AHEM.
Regarding your questions:
1) I've used a vikuiti screen protector and have absolutely zero regrets. I am super picky when it comes to protecting my HD2 (going thru so many SP) so I hope you understand how much I crown this screen protector. Search my threads. I made a huge review about it.
2) Custom ROMS are always available- All the time. I use CleanEX mainly because gavin is an awesome and very active cook. He does a lot of the background stuff for CleanEX and when he release a ROM, ****, its awesome.
You should try it beta ROM, code named "AWESOMENESS" (all in caps)
3) Im using a 16GB class 6. Nothing but pure pleasure and speed when loading music or documents or games from the SD card. I had a 16Gb class 4. I noticed no difference in terms of speed.
4) typing in general, in sense UI can sometimes be laggy. Like you press an "A" and it does appear until a very split second later. But those laddyness are random. There have been lots of tweaks here and there to improve them. I never bothered, but they exist. I can live with the laggyness but I use SWYPE which has NO laggyness for me at all. =P

The problems I encountered were due to 3rd party software I installed or registry edits I made. After hard resetting phone and carefully choosing (and listing) the apps I install there are no major bugs to report.
Using only stock ROM so far, didn't find the need to risk a custom ROM yet.

Well, basically it is the same as with the Diamond in the beginning: Requires some time to fiddle out all the settings, but then works like a charm. I have the Diamond for one and a half years now and it works perfectly. I even UC'ed mine to have the old data on it faster after flashing new ROMS.
People who complain that "it does't work" should get an iPhone imho, since everything works out of the box there.
I considered getting a phone with Android or a propietary solution (e.g. Nokia), but there is hardly anything to configure (and my beloved TomTom won't run). Will try getting my hands on the HD2 in the next weeks, to get a real opinion about it.

I myself had HTC Diamond before I used an Iphone for over 3 years,the experiance between the two phones(Diamond vs HD2)is from sky to earth (I sold back the Diamond after using it for couple of days),if you have the time to customize it a bit,not necessarily ROM changing,Im on stock 1.6xx,I say you can easily fall in love with it,I pretty much can do anything with it, within my interest.Most of the problem comes after installing not so much tested 3rd party applications.
BTW I use it as my daily device and I had no such problems as mentioned in some of the posts above,may be just a new WM user beginners Luck!!

mines got the 1.66 rom and 2.07 radio direct from HTC......very stable.
I've had many winmo phones (mda compact/m600/kaiser/xperia x1) but the HD2 is the daddy!
Get one and you'll find it does everything your diamond will do......just faster and better!

I dont mean just software-wise but more hardwarewise too,so much differance between resistive and capacitive as well as the size of the screens, however prepare your self for a pleasent surprise if you ever decide to get the HD2,more so that you are familiar with the WM and its modding process.

I have had my HD2 for 4 months now. I use it everyday for business. works flawlessly, and I'm a heavy user. lots of phonecalls, emails etc. use it as a wireless router or bluetooth PAN when I'm away on business. I have never once had the phone crash. I'm still running stock 1.66 ROM. I would definitely recommend this phone.

No crash sounds good - oh lord, what have I lost data on the Diamond based on buggy ROMs
But I will have to switch ROMs at least away from the stock one, Vodafone always has to have something special there.
