[Q] Skype video chat with Droid 2 - Droid 2 General

I just tried searching the forum to see if Skype video chat is possible with a D2. I didn't have any success and I am sorry if this question has already been answered!
It looks like my phone has a front facing camera but when I log in to Skype, video chat is not an option. Is it possible?
Thanks for your help!

D2 doesn't have a front facing camera.

What he said. What you're thinking is a front facing camera is probably the ambient light sensor in the upper right hand corner.

The Skype app, contrary to what most people would obviously assume, does not feature any kind of video chatting/calling feature. You are also most likely confusing the notification LED with a front-facing camera.
There is a free app on the Market, though, that provides video chatting capability; it's called Tango. I've tried it several times, and while it's a bit awkward video chatting with cameras on the back of both phones, it still works well enough that I can both see and hear the person I'm calling. The only annoyance I've had with the app so far is the noticeable sound delay, and it has some mixed overall reviews, but it's the only video calling app that seems to be viable.

Tango works alright. Try using it while standing in front of a mirror and it works pretty well on D2

currently it is not available but one of our great developers can do it
the concept is there, if you downloaded Fring application from the Market you will be able to perform Video Calls over the Skype (through Fring)
But that has no use, you must look at back camera and you cannot see the person with who are you talking...
Well you can carry a mirror with you and point the rear camera to that.

Mirror?
Hahahaha ) good one....
You can already do video calling with Fring, using Skype. No root required.
I heard root enabled X-ray vision on the camera, I ride the train a lot here in Japan, will come in handy.
I just bring a picture of whoever I'm talking to, and look at that.
It's just like video calling but better.
Sometimes I bring a picture of the Queen, and pretend I'm actually taking to her.
People on the train are amazed I know the Queen.
Aren't we a sarcastic bunch today!
I just close my eyes and imagine what the caller looks like.. It's cheaper that way.

Lol this thread is funny. But on a serious note, why can't we use the front camera?
P.S - My first post on XDA Forum

It's the proximity sensor or the ambient light sensor. Don't remember exactly what, but it's no camera.

I always thought it's the front camera. I can't believe this. Skype is going to come up with video calls on mobile phones and we can't use that feature now. How come X10 does not have front camera while almost all new phones have front camera. X1i has front camera lol

My guess is that SE has found that it's not used enough to warrant the extra cost. We've been doing videocalling here in .se for a few years and it hasn't really caught on. Even with free video-calling the uptake has been slow so they probably decided that the cost outweighed the benefits.

record video with front facing camera?

As far as I can tell, the built-in camera app only lets you use the front facing camera to take still photos, and not to record videos. (Seems odd since the front facing camera is presumably designed to support video for video real time video calls...) Anyone know how you can record video with the front facing camera?
you'll probably need a 3rd party software to use that camera for Self video blogging.
Unless they add it later down the track.
Fring allows you to use that camera for video calls. But yes, Its just a matter of someone developing a app.
has anyone found or made a app for this yet?
I wouldnt bother to be honest it is a pile of wank. But anyways there is an app ive seen before that can record via the normal camera and records you through the front camera as you record.

Do you remember what the app is called, because I have a Galaxy Tab and my theory is: if it works for Galaxy S, it will work for the Tab.
is called quick video mail

Front Facing Camera?

Got the Atrix today. Can't seem to access the front facing camera from the camera app (may have just missed it) and no app I've used so far is recognizing/utilizing the FFC. Fring, Tango, Yahoo all pick up the back camera only. Anyone using a different app for video calling or seeing any different results?
when in the camera app press on the screen and select front from the right hand menu.....
Can we do video chat with the front facing camera? Fring seems to only use the main camera.

Ah, thanks. I'm sure the regular players will update their apps. Hopefully soon as video calling is now something I won't do without and I prefer Android as an OS, so it's the primary reason I got the Atrix.
There is a version of Qik in the market specifically for the Atrix. I used it for around a half hour with a friend earlier.
I was gonna say it should work with qik. I remember seeing a pic of it running in the Engadget review. I'll have to check it out tomorrow.

Cool. Got Qik for the Atrix. Now to see if there is a version for iOS. My wife has an IP4 and need an app that will allow cross-platform video calling/chat.

Well I kept trying Tango...but I had a weird bug. Every time I'd initiate a phone call (from either end) about 3-5 seconds after the call was connected it would disconnect on the Atrix and go to homescreen.
If I initiated with Video I at least got to see a few seconds of video chat before it would hang up and basically crash to desktop. It used the front-facing camera.

Amazing 2mp front camera!

I shot a picture using the front camera, just to see the quality. I'm pretty amazed by the quality (considering its me on the picture)! Could some of you share pictures from front camera too?
Anyone?
Yeah.. it's pretty good!
Are there any apps out there that let us use the camera as a pc webcam?
Pretty sure there is. I downloaded droidcam 3-2 but never tried it
You're right, the front camera is pretty good, but, I think it can be smoother, just 2mpx and no auto-focus, why it's so jerky ?!
I hardly think they're going to build an articulating auto-focus lens array into the top of your phone just for doing your hair.
lol, i knew before i got this phone that wouldn't stand the frame rate of the front cam (2mp front cam sucks as expect to me, but better than any other phone currently). Will always use back camera video chat (if app supports it).

How would you see yourself when using rear camera for video calls?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I did a quick video comparison of the front v rear camera on the SGS2
Front facing cam:-

Rear facing cam:-

Shame about the 'zoom' on the rear camera, often find myself using 720p mode just to get more in the frame!

Like... never??? When I bought my DHD I was like "I've had a mobile with a front facing camera for 5 years and actually have used it less than 5 times. So I can go along with the missing front camera." The only way to send video is with the rear camera, which as far as I know supports only higt resolution vidos. If it could capturre video at 640x480 @30fps that would be great for video talk, but only on high speed connection, cause of the data transfer.
Good news, finally I can see my partner again
As for video recording... Could be very difficult on our beloved DHDs. Without a front facing camera I would loose the "can see" part just gained with this update. However... If the rear facing camera could be used, you could hold your device in front of a mirror to see the screen (and your partner) again
Would be very interested in seeing traffic statistics...
Nice, hope I can use rear camera for video on DHD.
