OTA UVKA6 Update - Vibrant General

Whats goin on here? ppl dont seem to excited after we have been crying for it since sept. It works very well unrooted. We finally get it and i seems like nobody really cares. This is a major step forward for the dev community. Im excited to see the kernels and other mods that become available in the coming weeks because of this OTA.....Mostly im looking forward to a SuperF ROM from Ben Buchacher. (Just My Pref..dont care too much for CM or TW very much)

wow! I didn't know this! how do you flash it??

if ur phone is rooted, u have to Odin back to Stock JFD frimware then open KIES Mini on ur computer and follow the directions...The Official froyo is called UVKA6

1. most people were satisfied when leaks started popping up
2. most people are waiting on samsung to release the 2.2 source (which samsung has 60 days to do so)

I think people were simply pissed at the audacity of the companies to hang us out to dry. Or we would have taken it up the ace had we not had these unofficial releases. I believe they felt abandoned and jerked around by a company they invested money in... so while i am glad they finally give an ounce of support i am happy running nero. And don't much care for stock i am excited to see how this affects our custom roms though!

What? Why? That's terrible advice.
If you already know how to odin, why not just odin directly to KA6?
That's way easier than going back to go forward. 5 minutes work, no loss of data.
Is their some reason you are suggesting doing it your way?

+1 most of us here weren't so much worried about the rom as we were the source code. When samsung releases it we expect the devs to have major improvements on the custom roms.

Updating to the Official 2.2 release has more of an impact on the millions of users who aren't on XDA. I was frustrated while I was on stock 2.1 mainly due to some issues with the bluetooth stack and some other quirks that Samsung put in. But I have finally rooted and customized my Vibrant (Nero5), so I am quite happy and don't want to deal with the headache that is minikies.
The only thing that I think I am missing on a custom ROM is audio out support for my Samsung Home Dock, but it isn't enough for me to try the official release at this point, because:
a) I don't know for certain that the feature is there
b) Not convinced that Samsung got it right.
Does anyone know of a list of features and bug fixes that are included in this release from T-Mobile beyond what is included in the general 2.2 update?

Where did you hear that source is being released in 60 days?

Source release is legally required by the GPL (GNU Public License), which the Linux Kernel uses. Android uses said kernel. There is also the Apache license for Android, which has certain requirements.

Updating from a stock image and wiping your data can eliminate any weird quirks you may have... at least that is what I have experienced.

It was released back on July 30, 2010.

I am very happy that froyo is here, now or at least soon the devs can optimize the kernal uv/oc and such. I won't be flashing stock on as nero is so much better. The thing is Samsung has left a bitter taste in my mouth, a little communication with its customers would have gone a long way. As it is the release of froyo seems as much a PR move as a delivery of a long over due promise. Got to think long and hard about any Samsung perchase in the future.

Yes he was a Dev from the MyTouch 3G forum and he was the maker of SuperD (Donut), SuperE (Eclair), and SuperF (Froyo) Roms. He has a Vibrant since the begnning but was holding off untill Samsung releases official 2.2 and source code. Me personally, i liked his ROMS better than i did CM ROMS

Yes, but there's no reason for the middle stepy of odin'ing back to JFD or JI6. Just ODIN right to KA6 and you ARE stock again.

Looks like the Captivate OTA is a bit of a clusterf***

If you go over to the Captivate forum, many many many people are reporting failed updates, including possible brickage in some instances. There doesn't seem to be a common thread to the failure (root, lagfixed, custom ROM, etc.); it's just widespread and seemingly random. Some people have stock Captivates that won't update successfully, while others have updated rooted phones and maintained root.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say "T-Mobile and Samsung, please take your time and make the Vibrant update perfect."

Not only that, but also if you read AC at all they are planning another OTA for the Epic because the last OTA slowed their 3G speeds waaayyy doownn
That's what I said in the other thread about the update. MAYBE, just maybe T-Mobile held off on the update for the GPS/other fixes just to see how the update did on ATT and Verizon and go from there. I'm not as upset over the fact that we didn't get any update, so I agree with you. Take your time Samsung and T-Mo and make this update awesome and worthy to hold us until 2.2 gets here

Read that tonight too. Other carriers are "Pawns" while T-Mo users wait while the bugs get fixed and the others have to deal with them maybe?
Wonder what this will do to everyone here who have been endlessly complaining about T-Mobile not updating fast enough like all of the other companies.
....Probably nothing now that I think about it.
Maybe T-Mobile is shooting for quality. I just wish they'd tell us about it instead of being super tight lipped. A simple "the update did not meet our QA standards" message would do the job. Saying absolutely nothing is only hurting them. Same for Samsung. Give us a release date for Froyo, even if it's Dec. 27th. They've got nothing to lose since people in the know are already being persuaded to not buy the phone and people not in the know are still going to buy it because of all the pretty colors.
What sucks is, them having to fix this problem is probably only going to slow down the time frame of when we should get our update.
My gfs captivate updated without a problem, I guess shes in the minority though
Got a tweet from TMO after I asked them and SamsungMobileUS about the update

well let's hope that the update will be bug-free and the update process is not troublesome like bricking our phones..
is it possible that tmobile is not working enough on asking samsung to update our vibrant that's why it is taking a long time for them to update our phone? vibrant is the very first to be released and why is it the last one to get an update?? or is it because there isnt much vibrant users and thus makes samsung less focused on updating it? ughh
just wondering

Seriously, someone should buy the programmers that work for these vendors an actual phone to test their releases on.
A lot of peole have been wondering if T-Mo/Verizon/ATT test their phones before launch. The only one that's had little issue is Sprints Epic. Samsung pushed for this device to be released in the States, even though people have been complaining about the GPS issues..
I too don't plan on accepting any OTA updates. I still don't understand why some of the peeps that visit XDA are all QQ over slow/lack of updates for the Vibrant. Not to mention all the QQ'ers about Froyo. FOR GODS SAKE we are at XDA the majority of us don't even run Stock UI's or would accept an OTA due to running a different rom.

If I'm not mistaken that 10 million number is the whole Galaxy S line. 3 of the phones in that line have had very little, if any, in the way of leaked software thereby putting the need for anything new at a stand still. The majority of the 10 million sold have been I9000 which has seen plenty of development. As for the Vibrant I count 4 active Dev teams that are major players here, Eugene, Team Whiskey, Master, Heathen. Then you have a couple others releasing random items. To my recollection there has been a new rom or update to existing roms every single week. I'm not sure what else you would want maybe a new rom to flash daily? One of those devs has stop posting here but those that like his work have given us all the updated info. All of the Devs with the exception of Heathen have slowed down a bit for various reason known only to them but I'd speculate 3 possible reasons. 1. Holidays man people want to relax a little. 2. Nothing new to work with in a few weeks and the last 3 or 4 leaks have just been tweaks to 2.2. And finally C. with 2.3 on the horizon I'm sure some of the devs are busy finding a way to bring us all a stable/working version.
Hope this clears everything up for you.

Not exactly true. I mean I understand the sentiment. But it only goes up to a point. I thoroughly expect either an official 2.3 release sometime this year, or at least a stable 2.3 port from the Nexus considering it's pretty much the same exact phone. But after that, I'm not expecting much considering the handset with be EOL by then.
I was a former G1 owner, and I think it was great that we were able to get an official build of 1.6, and even though CM worked pretty well on it (at least the Eclair versions), you can't really expect that it would run Froyo well.
Bottom line, I think if every handset was updated within the first 1.5 years of it's life, people would be satisfied and there would be a lot less frustration about lack of support with Android in general.

Samsung to update all the Galaxy S line to Gingerbread

Its official. They will begin with the European phones at mid month (arent we there already?) and then move on to the American phones. I'm guessing we'll see a leak in about a month.

Samsung has said that they'd step up their game with it comes to updates, and T-Mobile said they'd help push out updates faster.
I honestly think we may have a official release by the end of the month to early june.

Well, I really can be hopeful, since I'll also have the NS4G (getting it today), if they don't release it, I'll just play around with GB on the NS4G, and when the Vibrant gets GB, I'll have 2 amazing phones (not like the Vibrant isn't amazing now, but just not taking full advantage of it's hardware).
This is great news! Hopefully they do step up their software updates and push it out or leak it faster than we expect.

Hell, I'd rather take a leak, so that our amazing dev's can create working ROM's out of them.
Yeah a leak would come in handy. We'd get new roms and maybe some stuff fixed in CM7/MIUI. The Epic 4G had a leak not too long ago and i think there looking at another leak that one of the dev groups has. The ones that got us our leaks here in the vibrant section were Eugene373 and Krylon360, and their both gone. =(

Binary roms will not help CM7 and miui roms with GPS because of the way Samsung calls on the GPS as compared to the way aosp calls on the GPS. This has been stated many times over, and yet still gets swept under the rug.
Even after the *kernel* source is released, it still contains nothing about GPS source.

GPS will probably never work for EVERYONE on the Vibrant... so might as well let it go and wait for some dev to make a mod that makes it work like Heathen's GPS fixes.
I was saying that GB would open completely new doors.
GB could help complete MIUI and CM7, as they are all Gingerbread based.
Even if it is AOSP, they have to use the things that Samsung gives.

Also agree. Let TSM get their hands on it first
After running stock for a few days (during that whole ZOMG my 3G is gone fiasco) I was about ready to throw it out the window.
After a whole days worth of prepubescent tantrums. I don't want to touch this. I think I'd rather rock Adryn's froyo SC than a P3 GB leak. Haha.
If owners were going to release anyways then i'm sure its all about where the credit goes. That's why P3 released IMO. I am glad, however, that he chose the side of advancing the android os rather than holding grudges.
I don't flash any ROM anymore that isn't deodexed (theme-able), debloated (though I do like the TW video player and Media Hub), and de-Binged (though I still find Bing to be useful, that doesn't mean I want it built into my ROM). Therefore, like some of you have already said, I will wait until it's released as a custom ROM by Nitro, TSM, or one of the other devs who have worked on the Fascinate for more than a week or two.
[EDIT]: Oh, yeah, forgot to mention - I am also going to wait for a voodoo kernel (actually I forgot that this would install a new kernel). That looks to be a much longer wait than for someone to de-B it (deodex, debloat, de-Bing) it, since, as I understand, no kernel source has been leaked. It took a couple of months, as I recall, after the DL30 leak, for a Froyo voodoo kernel to be released. That was because no kernel source had been leaked, only the functional ROM build. The voodoo kernel was based on the official ED01 release after Samsung posted the kernel source.
Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
Save yourselves the trouble and do not flash until there is a less buggy and de binged version. At the very least we know that there is a Fully Functional GB rom on Verizon for the Fascinate.

EC09 is the build number, meaning most likely that a second dev team was working on GB while froyo was being finished up.

Actually, this is an old engineering build. I heard about it a while back, just never got to see it.
I wonder how long till we get an OTA of Gingerbread?
I would imagine it will be a little while. Verizon is notorious for continually pushing things back, and I don't see why this OTA would be any different.
What exactly is so great about gingerbread?

Never Give up, Never Surrender!! And so on!!!
So Come on Samsung.......we continue to be your loyal followers!! Give Us One More Gift....A late Christmas Present before letting us go to the SGIII!!!
Thats Alll I ask!! Even if it is Light...I can deal with that!!!

Try for a moment to step outside your world and look at things from the other 99% of Epic users; the ones that AREN'T on XDA and spend most of their day doing things other than flashing their phones. Even assuming that ICS works smoothly on the Epic, replacing the current GB rom with a bare stripped ICS rom would look like a downgrade to them with all the Touchwiz functions missing. Maybe some people would like that, but I think it would be a marketing mess to try and explain why they are taking away features with an update.
For those of us who are geeky enough to want a plain ICS rom, stand by for CM9, that will be here much sooner than we would get an official ICS update.
And if I see one more new thread about whether or not we get some stupid upgrade a year from now I am going to throw up all over XDA! Please put all rants in an existing ICS rant and complaints!
Cheer up !

why worry about phone updates that much ....
You have to understand that Samsung is just lazy about the Epic. We are just recently getting a final Gingerbread build in November and it STILL has memory leaks. They would like Sprint to discontinue them.

2.2 is working well, but the CM alpha version of 2.3 that was put out for the Moment, ran like crap, and was pretty much dropped as the devs moved on. I HIGHLY doubt that any version of ICS will run on the Samsung Moment in a decent manner
Not that I dont wish it would, just having modded the Samsung Moment for a couple years now, IMO it just doenst have enough internal space or processing power for a full blown ICS build.
Now the Epic has enough of both, if the partitions are resized, but I highly doubt that Samsung will take that route.
IMO, the only way the Epic will see ICS is with CM9. Thankfully, I feel there is a very good chance CM9 will be developed and released at some point by the CM development team

I think he was right by saying "can't" it would confuse those who aren't tech savy(majority of smartphone users) by taking TW fully off our phone. And from what I heard our phone need some parts of TW. Cm7 "I think" have a little tw in it

OK there is some confusion here...
1. He was wrong with "can't," Samsung could remove touchwiz entirely from our phone, and put AOSP Ics, with our hardware drivers that they have access too. HTC has already done this by removing sense from a phone, so it could get gingerbread.
2. As long as there is a tutorial, any user can get used to a new ui.
3. Our phone(nor any gs phone) does not need any touchwiz at all in CM. We have to use some Samsung proprietary files, cause we cant change them.

Maybe Samsung should just release a non TW version of ICS, but not have it as an OTA download. Those that want it would have to download it manually from a website and then use the "Odin for Dumbies" method of flashing ala the EB13 download that walked a person step by step on flashing the phone which would wipe the whole phone and install EB13.
That way the 99% of users who don't tinker with there phones would still have TW and GB on their phones and be happy with it, while the few that want ICS would get it as well.

Yes but its not worth the time and money for them to do that. Especially when CM9 does it for free. In my opinion, the smartest thing for them to do would be to supply the Samsung CM maintainers with the necessary drivers and sources to easily get CM9 running perfectly. Doesnt cost any money or much time and at the end of the day, the people who care are happy.

So, every Epic owner who doesn't use XDA also can't handle the transition to a new UI? Not one of those several hundred users has ever had a previous phone, especially not one made by HTC or any of the several other android phone manufacturers, or a Blackberry or iPhone? If that's the case, how did I miss the rioting when Sprint released the first update to Froyo? Or GB? (The UI changed with both of those upgrades, remember?)

Overpopulation must have really gotten out of control without my noticing - the last time I checked, this entire planet has a finite (in other words, limited) population...
I personally don't have a Moment, so the absolute maximum number of people (the limit, if you will) is already guaranteed to be [world population - 1] at the most (assuming every man, woman and child has a Moment except me)
So, what was that about stupidity?

im sure he meant "a limited" not unlimited.

That would directly contradict the point he tried to make by using that statement - that development is still rolling on the Moment. If there were limited users in this case (since we know that there is always a limit to the number, actually stating it implies a very limited number), then that would be an argument in favor of slowing or halting development on that device due to a dwindling user base

It reads to me that the thought he is trying to convey is, "why does the moment (with such a limited user base) already have people (not samsung) working on ics and cm9 and we dont (with many more people currently using the epic)?".
I'm not sure though. The op need some grammer training and a better spellchecker.

Nicely reworded.
That said, anyone know of a link to any sort of ICS and/or CM9 in any state for the Moment?
