Looks like the Captivate OTA is a bit of a clusterf*** - Vibrant General

If you go over to the Captivate forum, many many many people are reporting failed updates, including possible brickage in some instances. There doesn't seem to be a common thread to the failure (root, lagfixed, custom ROM, etc.); it's just widespread and seemingly random. Some people have stock Captivates that won't update successfully, while others have updated rooted phones and maintained root.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say "T-Mobile and Samsung, please take your time and make the Vibrant update perfect."

Not only that, but also if you read AC at all they are planning another OTA for the Epic because the last OTA slowed their 3G speeds waaayyy doownn

That's what I said in the other thread about the update. MAYBE, just maybe T-Mobile held off on the update for the GPS/other fixes just to see how the update did on ATT and Verizon and go from there. I'm not as upset over the fact that we didn't get any update, so I agree with you. Take your time Samsung and T-Mo and make this update awesome and worthy to hold us until 2.2 gets here

Read that tonight too. Other carriers are "Pawns" while T-Mo users wait while the bugs get fixed and the others have to deal with them maybe?

Wonder what this will do to everyone here who have been endlessly complaining about T-Mobile not updating fast enough like all of the other companies.
....Probably nothing now that I think about it.

Maybe T-Mobile is shooting for quality. I just wish they'd tell us about it instead of being super tight lipped. A simple "the update did not meet our QA standards" message would do the job. Saying absolutely nothing is only hurting them. Same for Samsung. Give us a release date for Froyo, even if it's Dec. 27th. They've got nothing to lose since people in the know are already being persuaded to not buy the phone and people not in the know are still going to buy it because of all the pretty colors.
What sucks is, them having to fix this problem is probably only going to slow down the time frame of when we should get our update.

My gfs captivate updated without a problem, I guess shes in the minority though

Got a tweet from TMO after I asked them and SamsungMobileUS about the update

Hopefully that means that we will get an update that doesn't mess with our Vibrants which I was for a little bit thinking about selling.

I have made up my mind not to accept any OTAs. I am running a great custom rom called bionix now and I trust the devs here to do wonderful things for our phones.

Same response I got when I tweeted them this morning about not getting updates for the Vibrant. Again, I just have a feeling T-Mo is just seeing how these other updates go and then they can tweak theirs to just work (hopefully)Flawlessly.

well let's hope that the update will be bug-free and the update process is not troublesome like bricking our phones..
is it possible that tmobile is not working enough on asking samsung to update our vibrant that's why it is taking a long time for them to update our phone? vibrant is the very first to be released and why is it the last one to get an update?? or is it because there isnt much vibrant users and thus makes samsung less focused on updating it? ughh
just wondering

I'm running the new Froyo ROM, but would like to have a good working stock ROM to go back to in case I need too

Seriously, someone should buy the programmers that work for these vendors an actual phone to test their releases on.

A lot of peole have been wondering if T-Mo/Verizon/ATT test their phones before launch. The only one that's had little issue is Sprints Epic. Samsung pushed for this device to be released in the States, even though people have been complaining about the GPS issues..

I too don't plan on accepting any OTA updates. I still don't understand why some of the peeps that visit XDA are all QQ over slow/lack of updates for the Vibrant. Not to mention all the QQ'ers about Froyo. FOR GODS SAKE we are at XDA the majority of us don't even run Stock UI's or would accept an OTA due to running a different rom.
I wish all the douche nozzles would just STFU.

It would be nice so the devs would have an official rom with official drivers that are optimized to start with. The froyo we have now doesn't have a nice JIT, correct?

Yeah... I saw that. Little skeptical though because once you trace the source back to handhelditems they say someone got that info from a webchat with Sprint. We all know to think twice about those! lol It does seem to line up with that April 9th update that's been floating around though. Who knows...
Hopefully this is true and not another april fools prank. It was about a week-week and a half ago they rumored it would release in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.................
With all the sprint leaks we have been getting I think it might be getting close.
But who knows
I already have it thanks damage

don't worry, Sprint will just repackage one of the XDA roms as their own and use it as the official update
ive said it once ill say it again the april 9th update is a maintenance release to fix mms issues not 2.1
sprint hasnt told us anything beyond that
any new news on an "official" release date? im hearing either the 9th or 26th of this month? i don't get why sprint is soo tight lipped about this?
also when is the nexus & evo launching on sprint?

with alot of tweaking to do after the initial install, yes your right.
i hope when the final comes out and we get custom roms, we won't have to apply any fixes. this is one reason im back to 1.5 for now. i have faith in the devs here, they do great work!
Why do we keep creating threads on this issue. It is a waste of space. It will come when Sprint is ready to release it. They have never given an exact date. People get so pissed because they haven't sent an update. Well guess what. When you bought your phone it had 1.5. They are not required to update it to 2.1. Either use a custom ROM or shut up and wait until it comes out. Then when it comes on don't get on here complaining about how crappy the release is.
I have Fresh 2.0d and it is working very well.
----------------------------
Shut up and wait
Running: Fresh2.0d
Developing:WarpedMetal (T minus 2 weeks)
Just got out of a sprint chat. this is what they're saying
honestly no thread can "waste space" as well we have plenty of it. I wasn't complaining nor *****ing about it. I am more happy with the legend based roms then the leaked Sprint roms but when the official Rom hits it will help with more development to fix issues and get faster roms out there. honestly if you don't like these threads the easy thing to do is stay out of them. no one is forcing anyone to read the forum or a certain posts. forums are for talking that is there main and only reason for existing.

Does Sprint use any automated responses on the chat support? I know there's quite a few companies that do, the program just selects a basic response to generic questions about that subject, and it seems like the responses that are given by these reports are way too "computery" to be coming from a human. So I'm guessing that the system Sprint's chat support uses has a list of responses pop up based on key words in the client's question.
Probably way off base, but it'd almost make sense based on how similar the responses are in all these chat transcripts.

I don't see why rooting should stop you from getting the update.
If you have done more than just rooting, then I'm assuming you might have trouble getting the OTA update. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in.
EDIT: By "more than just rooting", I mean if you have installed a custom bootloader or a custom rom.
Cool beans!

Yeah, but if you install it, you will lose root. There will be a modified rom that's rooted VERY shortly after it is released though (Probably before many get the OTA update).
Wow, that was quick! Glad to see Samsung is following through with their promise and fast.
Hopefully the Vibrant will get a release in early August.
if this also includes a GPS fix, i'll be picking up a vibrant within the next week or two... after i pay AT&T my last payment on that contract. whoo!!

See also this thread in Vibrant forum.
p.s. As recently as a few minutes ago, Samsung's Galaxy S support site for the U.S. on Twitter was saying there is not ETA for Froyo on this side of the pond at all.
Deployment for the Epic is even more complicated than the rollout for the GSM-based variants in the U.S. If the Epic gets Froyo in November, I will be most pleasantly surprised.
one way or another it seems like typical samsung taking forever to release an update

What? You want to wait until 2012 to get a new OS update?
What does 2.2 offer that you can't have on 2.1? I just don't see what the big deal is anyways. Is everyone that unsatisfied with their phone that they are getting bent out of shape about 2.2? This is Sprint and Samsung we are talking about right? I fully expect it to be here in January or February. In the mean time, I will enjoy my Epic with 2.1 Which is still better than the Evo on 2.2, imho.

I heard flash sucked with 2.2 but that's just me. Granted it's nice to have and it's something the I-suck doesn't have so that's always a plus.
Phone is plenty fast for me but I don't do anything extensive on it. Even when it drops I'll probably still wait a while to see if it's even worth it. Reading the Evo forums, it sounded like it was more trouble than it was worth and broke more things than fixed.

@firehawk if you get the update just download it and use adb to pull it off your phone and 7zip (or extraction tool of your choice) to open it up and have a looksy. You don't have to install it right away or at all.

You can't compare the MyTouch 3G (MT3G)and the Hero. Have you thought of the fact that the MT3G is based off the simple AOSP? It's as basic as it gets for the Android update process. Google effectively did most of the work, and HTC/T-Mobile just takes it and makes it compatible with the MT3G.
The Hero is built on the Sense framework. So that whole thing needs to be redone for 2.2... so HTC/Sprint has to do a lot more work than it did for the MT3G. As a company with something like a dozen newer Android devices, it's just not economical to spend resources on maintaining it. It sucks, but that's how the tech industry works (and that's also why we have awesome developers working on CM6 for us).
It seems to me with another update they could've given us froyo. I bet that this new update will mess up root again so I'm not going to update it til it can be used with root.

One reason is Samsung is lazy. They have been known to leave their customers hanging, like that awful Behold II incident where customers were promised 2.1 and instead Samsung abandoned everyone with 1.6. Even their high end Galaxy S is taking them until Jan or Feb next year to come out. Even if the Moment is built on AOSP it doesn't mean Samsung can just cut and paste the Google code and be done with it. They have to actually do some work to get it fully compatible, but I suspect Samsung does not want to invest in the amount of effort required to do so. I expect Samsung would have many different components and required drivers from HTC devices, so getting them compatible with 2.2 might be giving the sdx devs some trouble.

Update on FroYo

The question was posed on an internal forum system at Big Red:
"Any further updates as to when we will be releasing Froyo 2.2 for the Fascinate??"
To which the moderator responded: "Currently preparing to release MR2 (fixes only), FROYO will follow (early next year). The load is too large to put FROYO 2.2 into MR2."
I do not know what build MR2 is, but Big Red simply refers to builds as MRx, where x = the number of builds (read: times) they've updated. So the jump from DH12 to DI01 is considered MR1, this would be MR2. I however assume its DJ05 or even a newer build which has DJ05 and bug fixes that came from that, but we'll have to wait and see.
That being said, the moderator who responded is a VERY technical person and RELAYS actual device issues to all the OEMS on a daily basis. I would take his statements as fact, hes in charge of the internal forums for ALL phones, company wide, its about the most official, strictly technical, non marketing garbage answer you're going to get. Its his job to know this stuff....
Again, where I got it, 'tis none of your concern. I'm just copying and pasting, you do and think as you please.
I can wait till next year.

I'm pretty sure it's already been confirmed that DJ05 has been canned and they've moved on to a newer 2.1 build.
Yeah, we knew all of this about a week ago in IRC. However, folks who don't go there don't, so its good that mexiken posted this.

About the amount of time I haven't been on IRC and actually interacting, ja ja. Good times.
So did they scrap DJ05 ???? Or did you mean it was known that MR2 is Dec and FroYo is early next year ????

There's been no official, internal or publicly, made announcement about scrapping it.
DJ05 was scrapped.
DL09 is on the ballot now.

This to me is absolutely ludacris..
"Froyo is going to be available shortly after the release.." 6 months later we still are waiting..
"DJ05 is almost ready for release, just a few weeks away.." 2 months later we are still waiting for this... and now its scrapped? Is it really that difficult for Samsung to release a freaking update to fix our phones?
Granted I am running DJ05 (thanks to everyone here!), but for people who don't run the risk of rooting their phones etc.. its absolute BS! So annoying!

Releasing updates is easy. Releasing updates that pass VZW QC/QA testing on the other hand...
I could have been misinformed by samsung, but a few minutes ago I was told there are no plans for an update to froyo.

A clueless rep. Who woulda thunk it?
Allow me to cue you in as to why that will not happen.
1. Samsung doesn't want to get sued for all the nonworking docks with jacks out there.
2. Verizon doesn't want to get sued by Samsung if they decide to axe the update, for the same reason.
Samsung should just start "leaking" all these updates so the mod community could test and help them weed out the bugs quicker.
Then agian, that might be what happened with DJ05.

I think all of us here would agree that the dev community is much more responsive and capable than any oem has been. New business model, maybe?
Update: Has anyone seen that the Intercept froyo update is rolling out? Is it just something with the sgs that's preventing updates? It's not just cdma & vzw because the other sgs forums are full of people just as frustrated as we are.

2 things...
First of all, as I understand it, one of the problems with us not being abel to go to FroYo is the file system and its structure and just the underlying layout of the phone in general. If this is the case, how can they possibly fix that over the air, with an update, that doesn't require a complete reboot of the phone (meaning starting over from scratch)? As I understand it, we are hoping the file system changes to something more stable, but will this be possible through an over the air update? That seems really tough and prone to many issues. Maybe I am wrong or simply just don't understand.
Also, I bought this phone because we were promised 2.2 and I am wondering, with it consistently pushed back, at what point can Fascinate users consider a class action law suit for unfulfilled promises? If I had known I was going to be stuck on 2.1 this long, I honestly would have bought an Incredible. At some point they need to be held accountable.
Wow some people seem so upset today. Well I guess you learned your lesson research where you buy your phone from. From what ive read and herd Samsung is notorius for sloppy support. A watched pot never boils. How bout people just live life n have some fun phones arrent everything. Smile did i mention that im drunk at the moment.
Drunk and misled.
Verizon is holding this up by requesting 2.1 bull****.
