Samsung should take notes from Motorola.
The Droid 2 is breaking records in sales, mostly due to
marketing the Android 2.2 software and UI. Samsung has to hurry and get Froyo to the masses of Galaxy S owners and sell the hell out of it.
They have to keep up with the Jonses in order to sell these phones.
I think T-Mobile should step in and push this with their partners and have a huge re-launch of the phone. The vibrant is a great phone It just needs better marketing and cutting edge UI.
What do you think?
That's why it's called Samsung and T-mobile.
I'm thinking Samsung will announce something at IFA, which starts September 2nd. Their twitter keeps saying they're making a lot of big announcements. I'm hoping to get a definitive date for froyo then or at very least, the GPS fix.
Yeah I definetly agree with you. These Galaxy S phones have the hardware, but not the killer software to match it.
I was set on buying an iPhone, because I had no clue a phone like this even existed on my network.
But Samsung is by no means stupid and have been making some really indicative suggestions that we will be seeing some big changes in software in the next couple of months.
I'm more than sure that we will get Froyo, GPS fixes, and more by the end of September.
WHAT?!?!
FIRST:
the X doesn't have froyo. They have a leaked version with piss poor benchmarks.
SECOND:
the galaxy is always having a commercial on tv.
Their also selling very well.
He's referring to the "Droid 2", not the "Droid X."
I think that us techno gadget geeks here on xda certainly care about Froyo. But out of all the people I know that are in the market for a new smart phone, or actually have android phones, they don't care about froyo, or even really know what that is if you mentioned it. I think the masses care about getting on facebook and taking a picture with their phone, etc... I think the silly things like having avatar on it are a bigger selling point to the masses compared to which version of android it has on it.

People don't even know what android is. They go around asking if that's the droid phone. I'm sure they aren't aware of different versions of software or why it matters.

Lol. I get that all the time, I switched from the iphone 4 to the vibrant and everyone of my friends calls it a droid. Verizon spent alot of money on marketing, but i guess any "droid" exposure is good.
Yeah + let's not forget motorola's other phones sitting on 1.5 with blur...even the behold 2 got 1.6 lol nothing to strive for

Ha. Same here. People at work ask me questions about my "droid phone". My co-worker said she almost bought a droid the other day. I asked her which one and she said, "you know, the droid phone," as if there's only one. I've explained to them before what android is but it clearly doesn't sink in. I think its safe to say most people that aren't tech nerds are clueless. Even my iphone sporting friends don't know what Android is.
Pretty much they only care can about the surface stuff really. My brother in law has a news girlfriend who had a hero and didn't even know about the market on it at all. She didn't even know it was android.

Yea I will have to agree that the mainstream consumer isn't going to know what version of android they're running/if they have an android phone/care about updates. All they're going to see is the big screen and avatar on the vibrant and want to buy it. The tmobile store demos has a little sign listing the specs like 1ghz processor but a good mass of people won't have a clue what that even means.
Hopefully froyo comes in September because I decided to not go the rooting route this time and just patiently wait it out. I would be annoyed if they waited until the fascinate came out to release froyo.
Where do you see the Droid 2 is breaking sales records? Have you seen the numbers for Galaxy S phones? They expect to sell 10 MILLION over the next 12 months. That's more than iPhone 4 by itself. Samsung has got the Galaxy S on pretty much every provider in every country, I would have to call that pretty damned good marketing. The fact that a few hundred or every a few thousand people are chomping at the bit for Froyo doesn't even begin to move the needle enough for them to even care. The fact that they are moving forward and will be pushing updates and Froyo soon enough means that all the gearheads like us will be recommending the phone to everyone we know.
Missing the boat? I beg to differ, I would say they built the damned boat this year and are fully in charge of its direction.
I really don't understand how the OP says that Samsung is missing the boat with Froyo. They already announced that it will be released in the early part of Sep. A few extra weeks won't KILL YOU!

No, it won't kill us, but it will make me think about getting another Samsung.
If Samsung wants to add TouchWiz on their phones, then they should be prepared to react quickly when a new OS upgrade arrives. They've certainly had enough time before the Froyo original announcement.
The fact that they are lagging behind with what is supposed to be their flagship device, makes me nervous about how long it will take for the upgrade to OS 3.0, which will be a much more significant upgrade.

What makes you think they will ever upgrade the galaxy s lineup to 3.0?
so rumors of the nexus 2 are circling. i had my money on the g2 being the new dev phone. damn, maybe i should send my g2 back afterall. im impatient i want the new android asap, i hate waiting for carriers to play catch up
I feel you. I love the G2, but after having so many android options on my HD2 I had high hopes for the G2. I guess I was wrong. I've already signed up for several overtime gigs on my days off. I should have enough for a nexus 2 whenever it launches.
The nexus two is still a rumor, Samsung themselves said that it was not true. I would keep the g2, because even if you do not have root(for now), you probably will be one of the first handsets to have gingerbread.
Ill be keeping my g2 because I cant see anything being better then it. Plus I dont like samsung

i read the article, did u?
"All things considered, though, I think that the Nexus Two exists in some capacity and that it will be announced shortly"
i hope they release that the g2 will be the new dev phone. i wnt my new android asap! i hate waiting
Key words " I think". Samsung confirmed that they are not making it, so the likely hood that its coming from that source is very little. So yes I did read the article, problem is did you interpret it the wrong? Looks like you did....

he means that there will be another dev phone out very soon (maybe a nexus 2 who knows wut they will call it) and that samsung will not be making it. there needs to be one, 2.3 will support FFC and video calls. how can the nexus 1 do that?
also i think that you are not understanding what i am trying to say. the name of this thread is "i wish the g2 was the new dev phone" i had my hopes that the g2 would become the new dev phone. this way we can get the updates asap and not wait on our damn carriers to update.

At this point I'd pick Samsung over HTC. HTC will most likely not be an XDA's members choice of android phone in the future.
really? samsung over htc? i have to admit samsungs screen looks good, but the phones look cheap and feel cheap. maybe it was jus the demo phones i was messing around with
i really like my g2, i need a real keyboard. swype sucks and i have big fingers. the samsung with a real keyboard was waaay to bulky. then again its all ones opinion

I really like the look and feel of the g2 and all HTC phones overall, but hate how it's being locked down. I know most don't care about it being locked, but I would really like to load a different rom onto it. I'm not knocking the build quality of any G2 just the restrictions.
lol regardless of whether or not the phone is a dev phone or made by htc or samsung, the g2 is still gonna get updates faster than most other phones because there is no skin ( sense, motoblur, expresso etc...) on top of it to slow down the development. Second the main reason ( not the only one) the nexus 1 got updates faster than any other phone was because it was a product sold specifically by google. So of course the phone received update faster because it was googles phone. And since google confirmed that they would NOT be making another phone to be sold and would just focus on refining android, there will not a be another so called nexus 2 or true development phone, regardless of the carrier or manufacturer. So either way your argument is pointless. Stop worrying about future updates and whether or not your phone gonna get it first and just enjoy it.
The fact that we were promised a piece of software that should only require minor tweaking is absolutely unacceptable. I use linux for almost everything and that being said I know a bit about rolling out releases of different distros and how to integrate them into different systems. Android is a linux based software, (Opensource might I add), the only reason we don't have the bleeding edge is because Samsung needs to put their horrible UI into it, TW. I don't care about "Touchwiz" its badly programmed and anyone who has taken basic programing courses could program a GUI for this phone that puts it to shame. I'm sick of dealing with leaked versions of things that I was promised. No offense to any of the Devs, you guys are incredible and should be paid to roll out these releases rather than waiting for these bad companies with their "programmers" to try to find out how to use a toilet. we should have a stable build of gingerbread by now and I'm sorry but building a driver/hardware file for a computer isnt that hard, nor should it be so for Samsung since they placed all the parts into the phone. What do they have like one person with half a brain trying to reprogram the whole OS using Assembly code? Do they not realize the OS its self is open source and you can mod the code for each phone?? Both sprint and Samsung are horrible companies, if Froyo doesn't show soon, I will never touch a single one of their products after my contract is up, which is soon. Sorry, I just needed to rage. Hard.
Im with you man. Samsung stinks! I traded my EVO for a Epic and I have regretted it since. It has the best hardware out there and ZERO support. They are too slow about upgrades that are available and even lower end phones have gotten Froyo. They should skip Froyo and be first to drop Gingerbread. But, that would be too much like right for Samsung who sold the phones then dropped all of its users like a bad habit. If they dont do something soon Ill never buy another phone from Samsung. I dont blame Sprint because dropping updates is not on them. The EVO will probably be the next to get Froyo because that's the phone that Sprint has thrown it all in with.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it's Sprint's fault for the delayed release. Sprint putting in their bloatware is the most likely reason we have not received the OTA yet. While Samsung is at fault for not getting it out sooner, it is Sprint that is causing this delay.
All companies are like this its not just sprint or samsung... I've been with every carrier except att and I've tried all three major cellphone brands and they've all lagged behind like this.
Until android is less fragmented, (think its getting there), and carriers realize their UIs only frustrate consumers and there are better ways to advertise/garnish more fundage from existing customer base; we will face "version lag" all the time regardless of carrier/phone.
Just my $0.02

I think saying Gingerbread should be available now is pushing it..at this stage Gingerbread is for "developers"...I'm not saying that its not stable or anything, but it requires time to optimize for the hardware at hand...no phone ever gets a new Android OS until a few months after it came out..other the developer phones...
As for Froyo..according to samsung they gave it to the carriers..yes they have been slow overall but considering they are releasing 2.2.1 and not just 2.2 puts them there...
We know 100% that touchwiz is not the issue at this point as the leaks are running touchwiz just fine..
Either way there is still hope for end of the year update..as next playbook comes out on the 29th

Sprint "bloatware" is only a few apps worth a few megs. I think the only bloatware would be TW. I will never understand why is it so hard to port, say, the g2 build of android to our phone or any other android phone considering its pure vanilla with a few apps installed extra.. but that's why I'm no dev lol

Exactly. Very well said. This is a samsung issue and sprint has nothing to do with it. If that was the case then when the Evo got Froyo it would have probably been delayed also. I am only posting here because I was considering getting a epic but with all this delay and lack of support, I think I will have to re-think that. Everyone said from day one that Samsung would not support the phone and it has been proven true. Just a note on the delay, I have to say that the update was out for the vibrant and it was bricking phones. That shows how good the developers are over at samsung. They can't even program their own product. It's a shame because it's such a nice phone and the keyboard was the icing on the cake. Oh well.

They are both at fault actually. Samsung was slow to release the update to carriers and now they are being slow to release it to the end user. SGS devices in europe have had the update since november.
As to the evo issue, sprint considers the evo its flag ship device and as such makes sure it is up to date whereas they have made it abundantly clear they don't give a single flying **** about the epic so there is no incentive to update.

YES, still never purchasing another Samsung product.
Oddly I'm the opposite of the OP. I've been with T-Mo for 11+ years and been pretty happy with them overall. Having had HTC phones in the past, I will probably look at their next offering when I'm eligible for an update. While I love that the Vibrant has been so easy to mod, they've left a bad taste in my mouth.

Anywho, I don't like Tmobile, Samsung is Alright.
I wouldn't buy another Samsung phone that left them solely in charge of the updates. I actually do like T-Mobile though. Don't mind the 5gb cap either since I've began only using wifi in my appartment my usage has gone down from nearly 6gb a month to around 1gb.

I feel like they were mostly wrong about the gps. They should of came out and said they made a mistake and did a recall. Not to compare Apples to Oranges, but when Apple had the antenna problem at least they found a solution and gave out free bumpers/cases to help the issue. Samsung till this day has never said anything about the gps, at least not to my knowledge. Then they brag about how the Galaxy S line is such a success in sales, but we're just about the only high end Android device that's not on 2.2. It does not make sense to me. I definitely must say that I love the hardware minus the gps.

I don't hate Samsung, I just don't trust them - Just look at their track record. Will look hard at HTC or Moto at upgrade time - Depends on what is out but Samsung products will be out of the question. Once bitten, twice shy...
Been with T-Mo a long time - Have a sweet deal on my plan for 4 phones...
No source code for anything yet = still hate Samsung.
I do not trust Samsung and do not intend to purchase them again. I will be leaning toward the LG Optimus 2X or the LG Black. The only way I would want to buy Samsung again is if they have a dual core Nexus S2 with vanilla android and external sd card and Google is in charge of the updates etc. I am also very interested in the LG 4G tablet coming to T Mobile.
I guess I'm in the minority -- I have no issues w/Samsung and have been pretty happy w/my Vibrant. Yes, 2.2 has taken an awfully long time...but I always knew I could flash it if I really wanted/needed something in 2.2 -- and ultimately, I did.
Seems to me the only phones that don't go through this are the official dev phones (Nexus); why, I still remember when T-Mobile was hinting that 2.x would come to the G1.
I would definitely buy another Samsung.
Will never buy another Samsung phone. Love T-Mobile though. Next phone will be an HTC.

You got what you paid for people, you bought a epic with 2.1 eclair on it, do you buy windows xp and then when windows 7 comes out you complain they won't upgrade you for free? There will always be something better and something new out there or up and coming you can't expect companies to sit there and keep working on things of the past they have to make money as well and they have to compete with each other and try to stay on top. I'm not saying I don't think they shouldn't release it for us I'm just saying you realy can't blame them for moving on with other phones as well. And if you think 2.2 is gonna make your phone that much better then go get a vibrant from tmobile bc I put 2.2 on my girlfriends phone last week and it didn't do much of anything for it, its just software sure your battery is a little better or the system runs a little smoother your not changing what you physically have the hardware is what it is and you knew all of this before buying the phone and if you didn't then you had 30 days to do some research and return it to sprint.

Alright, I'll bite.
most of us did not buy our epic's having seen a forum full of people dissatisfied with samsung's ability to upgrade their phones. I for one bought my phone on launch day. August 31st 2010. It was a sunny day, there was a nice breeze. I was young without a care in the world. I saw a phone with very formidable hardware and better yet, a promise from samsung that the device would see 2.2 in the very "near" future.
Now I don't know what you paid for your phone, but I paid retail price plus tax. If I had known I was actually paying for an education about what it exactly it means to buy a samsung phone I would have looked elsewhere.
that being said, theres one thing I can't stand and that is people such as yourself who waited until after people bought the phone and realized that and official update in a timely fashion not likely, accepted that risk, and then come here to rub it in the face of those who care about things like kernel sources, and custom roms to tell us about how we should all be as smart as you with your divine phone selecting savvy. I can't say that I speak for everyone, but I can certainly speak for myself when I tell you sincerely to gtfo.
yours truly, cozmonot
Ok to someone like yourself I understand that you did not know what you were getting yourself into and I'm not trying to say that someone such as yourself that bought the phone right when it came out doesn't have a right to be mad. I never said I had waited to buy this phone for any reason its just when I see ppl on here that say they just got the phone and now are mad they don't have 2.2 yet its disturbing. I understand we need kernals and source to make better roms and things, I myself am running Nebula and have been since the first week of owning this phone, so as with the rest of you I myself would like it so my rom can be further upgraded. The main thing I was trying to get at is that complaining about how we don't have it isn't getting us it I did not mean disrespect for someone like yourself and I don't think I have any better taste for phones than the rest of us we all chose this phone for whatever reasons but I don't think anyone chose it bc it was going to have 2.2

I agree in that people complaining here doesn't really accomplish much. Apologies, I probably shouldn't reply to threads when I'm angry and tired.
I think we need to make our voice heard by sprint and samsung if we want things to actually happen, and complaining to people in the same position can't make things any better. just look at the vibrant owners who threatened a lawsuit and got the mainstream blogs to post about the vibrant not having froyo, didnt they get the update like a week later? I agree with what you said in your second post and I wish I had known about what I was getting myself into back in August when i signed on the dotted line.

Actually, I did. Also, because of the slide out keyboard. If I wanted a phone forever stuck with Eclair, I'd have kept my Moment.
EDIT: I am not stuck on Eclair, but there are people who don't know about rooting and custom ROMs.

OMGrant this is very true I should probably keep my mouth shut sometimes but its just not easy and that's where the rant part came in...
Rygran87 I really don't know what to say about your unfulfilled promises you must have been happy with the samsung moment to buy another samsung tho...

I bought the phone because of the hardware and because it was stated that 2.2 would be coming soon. I don't understand how people like you can just accept that You have the phone with the best hardware specs on the market at the moment and not be pissed that it doesn't have 2.2. While I agree that coming on xda and starting multiple threads on if FroYo is out is not the most productive way of dealing with the problem, bending over and submitting that because you paid money for the device and knew that it had 2.1 on is just a cop out.
To answer your question on what does FroYo add, here is just a few.
- What about all of the people who spent $30 to $50 on official samsung docks and can't even use it to the fullest without FroYo. IT EVEN SAYS ON DAMN PACKAGING THAT FULL FUNCTIONALITY WILL BE UNLOCKED WITH THE 2.2 UPDATE.
- What about bluetooth voice dialing, JIT, flash, and the updated google apps that come with 2.2, not to mention the speed increase. The FroYo update for the Vibrant doesn't count in this case because everyone knows that update was rushed because of the lawsuit business, and that lead to a bugged release.
And if none of that convinces you, the fragmentation of the market is the best example I can give. Do you know how annoying it is to find an app that you know your phone has more than enough power to run, but it won't even show up in the market because it only works on FroYo and up? IT'S THE ****ING PITS DUDE. For example there is this game that some (ex-sony I think) devs called Lame Castle that I really want to play, but it won't work on galaxy s phones without FroYo. Look it up on the market with Epic, it won't even show up. Now go on appbrain and its there clear as day. There are numerous examples of this, but this is the one that affected me that most.
So when you say that we should have know better and should not be upset, all I can say is that I hope you continue to enjoy the anal that samsung and sprint have given you so far. There's a lot more to come.
It was my first Android. It was cool at first, but just wanted FroYo and refused to get the Evo because the screen sucks and no keyboard.

I would have to say my favorite part about what you said was when you said Froyo for vibrant was rushed and has bugs. Because that could be us, we could have a rushed crappy edition of froyo. I understand that it makes it better and we can't do somthings without but if your life won't go on because you can't play some game on your phone (unless somehow you've got a job doing mobile gaming) then it might be time to look at some new hobbies or just pay your way out of contract so you can go get a phone with froyo that will make you happy as a little kid in a candy shop. But it must not be that bad if your willing to wait it out and hope one day you will wake up and see an OTA.

you never [/rant]
Anyways android is a grey point right now as with your reference to XP you could pay to upgrade to vista/7 (driver / hardware supporting of course) where with android everything is kept under wraps so by the manufacturer until weeks or sometimes months after their "official" software is released and only then can some reverse engineer everything to get what they need to develop.
Hopefully the future of android can be like computer operating systems. Manufacturers only make drivers that way google can push out their own updates or at least give us the ability to do our own.

You are very right as far as being able to pay for updates I was just meaning more of on a free level for that analogy, but yes very good point. And I too hope that it will someday be that easy.

About the Vibrant, their is no excuse for that buggy release at such a late push date. The carriers have had FroYo since November and and have taken their own sweet time working on it. To add insult to injury, Every other carrier with a Galaxy S phone has pushed out FroYo since November. They even started getting 2.2.1 about two weeks ago. Even the number five carrier in the states, U.S. Cellular, has had FroYo out for its captivate out for about a month and a half now. And guess what? That update went off without a hitch. I also like how you were able to boil down my argument into the my statement about Lame Castle, which in my circles is very important because I'm going to school for that kind of thing, and Vibrant update which I would have even if I didn't have months of knowledge on the situation here and everywhere else that Galaxies are sold. You just get your phone and feel like preaching to me on how I should just take this ****. I bought this phone months ago knowing I would be with it for two years and expecting on Samsung to hold up to their statement of by the end of the year. Its a month into 2011 and still nothing. If you find your epic fine on 2.1, all power to you. But their are people with docks, people that want to make hands free calls while on the road, and people who just want full access to the market, who have all the right in the world to complain over this mess.
Note: Make multiple threads on XDA is NOT the way to go about it though people.

I never said there was an excuse for it but I do like your note, bc that was one thing I was trying to get at in my original statement is topic after topic about how we don't have 2.2. And I said earlier to a guy its not the people such as yourself that have had th phone and been expecting the update its ppl that haven't had their phone long and are starting thread after thread asking or complaining about 2.2.

I decided to get THIS phone for the desired features AND the promise of 4G and 2.2 before the ed of the year. While you are entitled to your opinions, I certainly don't appreciate labeling and especially not when you do it from the safety of your keyboard. It just isn't called for.

I didnt read the majority of the posts, I apologize....just want to put in my two cents and I guarantee it'll still be on topic.
People here have the right to rant. They have the right to be angry. They bought a true high end Android phone and are still on 2.1. That's not right... I have an Evo and an Epic...and the difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is really just the Flash (I'm not including what Samsung through in there based off of the leaked roms. Because some of what they through in there was just polishing up the UI and stuff). And Flash isn't really that big of a deal, its just one of those things that is nice to have. But thats beside the point. It doesnt even matter if the only thing different between 2.2 and 2.1 was a damn ringtone...a high end Android phone should be updated. If you don't update these phones, then why would someone shell out extra money to buy another high end phone that will share the same exact features as a low end phone? True the High end will be faster, but it really needs to have something to separate itself from the low end phone and that something should be the fact that it will always be supported...
And this is the problem with Android and this is what makes me sick about it. Android is great...but dammit...they need to relax on these phones and focus on the ones that are out now. They just keep on taking our money, and its going to get to the point where no phones will be updated, they will just keep releasing phones with the new update. And they know people will straight up go buy the new phone just for that update, just to realize that it aint even good. I started with the Evo before the Epic and if I wouldve went from the Epic to the Evo just for 2.2, I wouldve been pissed the hell off. 2.2 is not worth it at all...well, lemme put it like this: 2.2 by itself is not worth it. Although it aint worth it, this high end phone should still have it. If the Evo has it...the Epic should have it. The Evo will probably get Gingerbread and that'll be a damn shame...it won't benefit from it at all...
I mean, when you look at this 2.2 update from different angles, you can see why people rant and get mad. They have the right to...now if we could just put all of it into one thread that would be a lot better than multiple threads...but its w/e.
Also, does anyone else think that nothing else will top Android but Android will "destroy" itself? Android has already destroyed itself with me, if the iPhone hits Sprint, I'm jumping ship.
