Hi
I have an HD2 running android. My contract is with Orange and i am on the panther 40 plan. Inclusive with that plan is Orange Maps, normally Orange maps is imbedded within the OS but as i got my phone from the carphone warehouse and it is now running Android I do not get this option Has anybody had experience with this? if so were you able to resolve it? is there an orange Maps .APK somewhere?
Please help....
Is there anything specific you want from Orange Maps that you can't get from Google Maps? Or is it that the data is included in your plan? If that's the case then running the Android version will probably not make any difference and you'll still use data regardless.
Bear in mind (as poo as it is) that they sold you a WM device with WM software, compatible with their network requirements. You simply may not be able to get an Android equivalent.
My only advice is to go and have a search round the Desire forum. They did package Orange Maps on that device, so it may be available in the forum. To be honest, I don't really fancy your chances though. Most people get rid of what's considered "bloatware" as soon as they can.
Good luck mate

Hi John
Thanks the the quick response.
To be honest, I would probably never use it but as it is included with the panther plan I thought I might as well try it, no problems if I can't though ( I don't have a car ATM anyway )

lol. No loss really then, which is good. I thought Panther had unlimited internet anyway (or as unlimited as they ever are!)
Just use Google maps - it's great, and comes with free satnav. I bet Orange maps doesn't go 3D with a 2 finger swipe

Nice job... Telenav
Enjoy...
Sorry, before I execute this CAB,,,, what is it? Like a TomTom GPS thing??
Telenav is a Navigation tool. Unlike TomTom, it uses maps stored online, that are up-to-date and updated frequently. They use NavTek if you wonder. Check the details here: http://www.telenav.com/products/tn/
I use it on other devices and love it also on my Advantage.

How does it compare to Google Maps? (EDIT: Never mind, just looked at web site, and it looks awesome!)
What carrier do you have, what device do you claim to have? THansk!
Pay by the month for use? No thanks I will stay with Igo that way I will not incur any data charges plus monthly usage.
I think I'll stick to CoPilot 7

7? I have 6, and Copilot Live is at 6 for pocket pc. Yes, it;s great, even with the small screw-ups on the VGA screen.

I run on many different providers ranging from T-Mobile, Telefonica and others. I have an HTC branded Athena (Advantage/X7500). Runs fine, as long as you create an account with them. I don't mind the premium since the maps are precise, up-to-date.
Review of TeleNav
OK, downloaded, put in my credit card (have until 8/11 to cancel) and... WOW!
Pros:
Very nice feature set. Best implementation of searches for points of interest that I have seen; makes GoogleMaps look downright clunky! One of my favorites was search for lowest gas prices. Can also search for restaurants by type, just by clicking. And the results seemed very accurate. Really, really cool. And the fact that it is live means that you don't have to wait a year for updates.
Haven't tested the voice recognition yet, but a neat idea.
Nice big buttons. Hi-res maps. Attractive.
It is surprisingly responsive, even when on EDGE. Although I haven't tried an interstate at 80mph yet. This is a keeper... NEARLY.
Cons:
My biggest concern is the routing seems a little "creative". I did routes to about 10 locations near and far, and I would say it is comparable to Mapquest 2001. In one case, it inexplicably routed me through a subdivision rather than the direct route. Then I remembered... Mapquest used to give me that same stupid detour! In another, a 8-9 mile trip routed out at 23 miles! Maybe it's just the area I live in, but I'm not sure I'd want to rely on it if I really needed to get somewhere in a hurry.
The only other gripe is that while the user interface is pretty, sometimes the menus are confusing. I would hit the Menu button and get a set of options that weren't at all what I expected.
Also, with MvRTrueVGA, there is a gap between the bottom of the app window and the bottom of the display where a little bit of the app below peeks through. OK, this is a hack, so I can't be too harsh about that. But wouldn't it be great...
Summary
Bottom line, this has the potential to be THE killer GPS app. It's not there yet, but I'm betting this will get better in the next while. I definitely plan to keep playing with it at least until August 11, in conjunction with GoogleMaps and/or iNav as a second opinion. I'd be interested about experiences others have had, particularly with routing.
WGARY,
Have you tried traffic function with it? If traffic info is really up to date and integrated to routing. $10 may be ok for up-to-date map and real time traffic.

Traffic really isn't an issue where I live. My only real beef is the routing. Otherwise, I would gladly give the $10/month... might anyway!
I've been wondering when someone would come out with something like this, but for me it's monthly fee is a deal breaker (or needing a data plan for that matter) because I almost never need/use GPS, so I don't want to pay $$ per month to use it once in a while...
Still I wish them luck and am glad to see them improving GPS.

CoPilot Live 7 will blow you away - it is a vast improvement over 6.
When is 7 going to be made available? Do you know yet?
Beware of this product for the time being if you are UK based - it doesn't work, the program installs fine from the link but it is not possible to activate it. They have said six weeks (ish) before rolling out PDA compatability for Europe - for the time being its Blackberry devices only - Mike

:-S You got me curious now....
I love the fact that when I'm on the road for a long period, people (family, friends, customers) can track me and get an ETA on when I arrive, since I put my routes in CopilotLive. Maps are rough on edges, POI are not as rich as many features. I love TeleNav and consider TeleNav Track for the bidirectional functionality. Will see when they realease for the Athena. It's the really the best navigation PDA around in my eyes. By that time, I hope Alk will release Copilot Live 7. Can you send a screenshot? PM me if needed, I wonder how you got your hands on it and when it's due for.
Cheers.
Hey how did you guys get telenav to find the gps on the x7500? It keeps telling me that it cannot find it and to seek a clear sky position.
Thx
i didn't not notice it requried data plan before installation.
now, how can i uninstall it? TeleSav is not shown in the 'remove program' list. :-(
BTW, i still love my tomtom application.
UK friendly GPS software.

I have tried another one, webraska. I find not as nice as Telenav, but very close. excellent coverage in UK, Whales, and France. On my last trip I used it and found it just as useful as Telenav. Check it out... Webraska. For my friends on the other other side of the pond.
Anyone happen to know if this version works on other PPCs? Telenav hasn't updated their other Windows Mobile versions in years.
Anybody else noticed this? I have an unmodified Hero I got straight from Orange and the Market seems to be missing a lot of paid applications, the ones that use copy protection.

Can you give specific examples? Thus far, I've had no issues with paid apps with my Hero - had several on my G1 that I had to download again to my new phone.

Dave

Searching the Market for the apps mentioned on the earlier link, I can confirm that I can see some, but not all of them, an a T-Mobile G2.
I also noticed that I hadn't downloaded "DocumentsToGo" back onto my G1 (thought I had!) and when I tried it, I got the "Download Unsuccessful" message.
Regards,
Dave
I'm also missing apps on my T-Mobile G2. Can anyone else out there see the "Jack FM Live" app?
Nope I can't see that app.
The app I am missing is Battle for Mars. I have done the rounds ringing Orange and HTC to try and sort this out. Orange were fairly useless but finally just referred me over to HTC. HTC tried to claim there were different apps for different phones, but the example I gave them was Battle for Mars Lite was available, the paid for version was not available. They are meant to be ringing me back in 3-5 working days !?!! I will try and keep this thread posted. If anyone else has some news or can hassle Orange/HTC as well, I think that can only be a good thing and might push someone into sorting this mess out.
I can't find taskiller full - the free version is there but I want the one which has the full exclusion list. I've been in touch with the developer and he can see it in the market in France, although he thought that it may be due to waiting for google to review his account.
Guess it may actually be a similar problem to this. It's really frustrating because I would love to pay for the full version!
I've just got an unlocked hero that im using on o2. I can see the apps that others cannot, so maybe it's a network problem or related to the 'tinkering' networks like to do to phones before sending them.

That is really annoying - I can only see the free version using wireless or mobile data (standard T-Mobile G2 Touch, no root, not unlocked etc.). I'll let the developer know, it's really unfair that people who want to buy his app can't.
I can now see Taskiller full and Bluex which i havn't been able to see since i bought my hero, i have the Orange version of the phone.
checked earlier in the day and couldn't see taskiller full. I can now... I assume some back-end setting's been changed (whether it was a taskiller-full-specific thing the author did, or something google did centrally, I don't know)
Still can't see it on T-Mobile!

Same problems here, its really annoying. I really want the Bloo facebook app. The new 1.3 version is meant to be good .
Also on the topic of not being able to get stuff on this "open source OS".. WHERE is amazon mp3 uk . Can't take much for amazon/google to just shift the same program to access the uk mp3 store lol.
can confirm bloo 1.3a showing up for me(orange)
the guy who did http://www.cyrket.com/ mentioned apps appeared and disappeared due to sdk version checking. while i assume that isn't the issue here, maybe it's the same kind of thing? the hero's listed capabilities and the app's metadata are incompatible?
(tho why that would change just because it's sold by orange instead of t-mobile I don't know)
Does it work in the UK? Can't see how to use it?
Anyone got it working??
I doubt its running yet as Motorola Milestone still doesn't have it. Having said that, someone has managed to get it working on the Milestone using instructions from this site: http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-google-navigation-turn-by-turn.html
I bet you could use the same instructions to get it working on the N1
If google map works anywhere in the world, would'nt this navigation feature be just the same? So, out of the box, it will not work outside US?

I have tried this and it works on the Google Nexus One shipped to the UK. The only problem I have so far is that where | assume it shows the name of the street I am currently on it states "Unnamed Road". Apart from that, it seems to work although I have yet to try it properly as we have a lot of snow about and icy roads! When you zoom in, even the street-view works.
I can't imagine why Google have not enabled it for outside the USA with some sort of "beta" warning.
I have upgraded from a Hero and whilst I miss some of the HTC custom widgets, the Nexus has a beautiful display, the voice recognition is magic and an "official" navigator would be the icing on the cake for me.
apparantly there is some sort of licensing issue - google have an agreement with the people who provide map data in US but have struck the same deal overseas. They said last August that they would work on it...
There is a workaround that works for now (a previous loophole was closed by googles servers), albeit in a more limited capacity
I already posted this in the Tmobile US HD2 section but just in case you're not looking there... Bing has added Voice Nav with turn by turn directions!
http://www.bing.com/community/blogs...05/11/updated-bing-app-for-windows-phone.aspx
http://pocketnow.com/software-1/bing-for-windows-mobile-now-has-real-navigation-features
It appears to work really well for folks in the US... other countries ymmv for now. This is a great FREE app for Windows Mobile! Now I don't have to buy CoPilot Live!!!!!
Yes yes yes!!!!
thanks this is great

Never hurts to have a backup, and it does look very nice....
Its about time thougt that MS sorted our this US only BS, you cant compete if you dont actually have a working product.
sadly still only support for US, UK, Italy, France Still I use GMaps when travelling, it's just easier to handly then iGo and it has phone numbers etc. matching your destination.

The UK version is probably the worst app you can get for the HD2. This new US version looks a lot better and works to a certain degree in the UK but navigation doesn't work outside US and the voice search is next to useless as I don't say say "have a nice day y'all" on the end of each search (needs an American accent probably)

Lol! Hopefully MS will continue to make improvements and add regions to the app... I'm very, very impressed with the new version and the voice input works very well for me... (I don't end my sentences with "have a nice day y'all" either , maybe the version you downloaded was corrupted, hehe).
have a nice day y'all!

I agree, but... A) this is free! B) I already own a GPS but no longer have to carry an additional piece of consumer electronics along with me. C) I have the (unlimited) data plan anyway so no downside for me in using it...
ymmv of course.

I'm looking for an offline navigator for the US (and Central America, if one exists). I don't have data access most of the time, so I need to store maps on my phone. All opinions will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Copilot's pretty good. They do North America, but I don't think they do Central America.
I used that for nearly a year on Winmo, since it came as a trial on the HD2, but have switched to Navigator since using Android (obviously no good to you as it uses data).

Yes, I too used Copilot on my WinMo phone. Liked it, but was hoping to find something a bit more US-centric (newer maps).
I had read that Google was going to release an offline version of their software. It seems, IMHO, that Navigator is superior to Copilot. Have you seen anything about a new version?
Thanks for your response.

The next version of Google maps will still need a data connection to download the map data initially, but will not require one after that. I have to say, Google have been working pretty hard recently to give us some good updates, but the maps app is the one I'm looking forward to the most!

Just got an email from CoPilot that they have updated their maps as X-Mas gift. No idea how thoroughly they have been updated, but you might want to check it out. I have CoPilot installed as backup app for when abroad or without signal, and I like it.
