If I buy a G2 in store model off of ebay(very cheap, not sure if its an actual phone..) but it runs commercials and loops of the G2 features, does that mean it is possible to flash an actual rom on it?
I'm guessing the answer is no and I feel like a total noob, but I guess its worth asking.
No you wont be able to run a rom since it doesnt have any hardware on it from what i can say.. But i could be wrong as well =]
Warning
Do NOT buy that phone!!!
The last time I was in a T-Mobile store that had real demo phones, I wasn't in there but 5 minutes talking to a rep and the alarm went off because someone yanked a phone and ran off with it. Crazy stuff! Since then I haven't seen a store with a working demo phone in ages! They all have those plastic dummy phones.
Obviously this is why, lol

don't buy it.
hop on craigslist and buy locally. you can touch, use, and test the phone before handing over tons of cash. ;-)
as far as 'tv-like' phones that 'only play videos for demos' that's completely wrong. the phones in store are running a demo application that showcases the features of phones. it's much, much cheaper to just install an app on a phone and put it on the shelf. du huh ?
It was like two dollars with an hour left...it was a t-mobile store G2 that played demos of the features, it said. So I can or can't flash full android on it if i bought something like that?
Probably not a functioning phone. But some of the parts that are real may be worth more than what you paid, like the screen!

Well if it comes around again.. just get it. For $2 it can be a throw away item. No biggy... like an nrg drink.

Actually, more like "Do NOT buy that whatever it is"
the fact that it is playing a video proves that is has the required hardware to play a video (you need at least SOME storage and processing power).
I very much doubt that HTC is going to make a limited run (less than 500 units) of a specially designed motherboard just to stuff into a fake G2 that can only play videos.
It's either a completely fake dummy phone (fake screen, no electronics) or it is a completely normal G2 and should be flashable to a stock rom. However, some parts of the phone (wifi or cell tranciever) may be defective, which would explain why it's a video demo, and not being sold as a normal phone.

A television made in 1985 was able to play video and sound, and it had ZERO storage OR processing power.
And FYI: It wouldn't be a special M/B run for just that phone... it would serve ALL dummy phones.
It's called a 'smart mock', and no, you cannot flash a ROM on it. Typically these do not even have a battery - they have to be connected to a power source continuously (or they take a couple AAs or something) and simply show a looping video (not much more than an animated GIF, honestly).
And they make more than just 500 or so - tens of thousands. It's supposed to be better than a regular dummy phone, but they're just a royal pain to deal with.

Also if anyone had circuit diagrams of the board i could maybe repair mine
Dude, this is your 2nd thread within a few hours, with (and that's just a guess) the same problem.
I don't think you can buy a standalone PCB, as it is 90% of what makes the phone a phone.
What exactly happened to your or your GFs phone?
Maybe one over here can help out.
But you have to answer the threads instead of starting new ones...

Now this would be a silly thing for the op to do. Perhaps when he purchased the device it was quite good but its an old phone now, and there are many more options that are availibe that do not have the flaws of the x10.
Op, if I were to suggest the smart thing to do, it would be to either purchase a Galaxy S, or even better, obtain an iphone 4. Atleast you would get multi-touch and have a phone that actually functions well as a phone.

A piece of hardware that was only removed because TMO didn't want it on their network is hardly a reason for someone to get an iphone. Samsung covered up the camera hole with some paint and left the mounting brackets in place. This is simply putting your phone back to the way the manufacturer intended it to be.
If people want to make video calls or take myspace pics (are they still called that even though pretty much no one uses myspace anymore?), then let them. We've got three Vibrants in the house & for $20-25 each, we can get a FFC, so I'll probably be doing this mod as well, even if I never actually use it. You'll still have something unique that 99% of the other phones out there will not have.
For the people that don't want apps sharing their GPS location without their consent (even though they gave it when they installed the app), that's a reason to go to iphone. For people that just want the phone "experience" to be magical out of the box, that's a reason to get an iphone (the rest of us LIKE that Google made it so pretty much everything is customizable).

Yeah, too bad Samsung didn't redesign the board to fix that. The camera was removed because T-Mobile didn't think it was necessary (and I agree), and to keep costs down.
If you REALLY want the device to be "how the manufacturer intended it to be", stop rooting, flashing roms, hacking it, and do a factory reset to JFD firmware and leave it alone.
Otherwise, you're just a hypocrit.
BTW, I truly believe that an FFC is a completely useless gimmick, and nothing more than a check on the box and something for people to ***** about it not being there. Nobody thought they wanted one till it wasn't there.

Okay you wrote this because? Nothing is perfect outta the box. You get a laptop and instantly get firefox or chrome, you order food at a resturant and add salt. Who said we hated our phones cause we mod them? I like the vibrant, I also like video chat, so if I can have both why not? No one is telling you to do it, you just keep running sammy's knock off ios touch wiz and leave the customization for people who understand what android is about. Better yet get a nice feature phone so I dont have to skim past your narrow minded crap. A hypocrit posts in xda about not modding a phone. Shove off troll. Help or leave.
Edit the ffc is built onto the i9000 cam prob costs an extra $5 tops in bulk, who here would not have paid a lincoln more for there phone?
Tmo removed it so the mytouch line would be the first to get it.

OK, yes, maybe I'm trolling a little bit, but seriously, you people didn't even know you wanted this stupid gimmick till it wasn't there.
I wrote my last post because the guy said that putting in an FFC is "returning the device to the way the manufacturer intended". Well, the manufacturer intended you to use it with the unrooted stock UVJFD rom. Anything else (all the community roms, leaked roms, rooting, flashed GPS files from leaked roms, "lag fixes", etc) isn't the "way the manufacturer intended". Seems a bit hypocritical to me.
PS: I never said anybody hated their phone. Don't put text onto my keyboard that I never typed. For the record, I'm running LP+ on JI6 with a custom-modded Framework-res.apk and "/data/data to NAND" hack. So don't tell me I don't know anything about modding a phone.
Duly noted sir. I will hush. Lol

Exactly, only purpose i could see (before DLNA was confirmed anyway) would have been the ability to share your videos via HDMI, so if you went to a friends/family members house and wanted to show your camcorder videos you could via HDMI, it would be as simply as a connection to the TV via the HDMI cable.
But now that mirroring has been unveiled by LG on there Optimus line of phones, Optimus 2X and Revolution, it might be a cool and all to see your games and UI on a big screen tv, but not really necessary since theres DLNA on board and most TV's anymore that are flatscreen or HD have it built in especially with the rise of internet capable tv's like my Samsung 52"
DLNA works great on the new sense and i love how its two way where you can control the content via the phone to the TV or from the PC to the phone and vice versa.
to the TV you can use the phone as the remote, control the playback, pause it turn the volume up and down and all that, just like a boxee minus the TV controls anyway lol
i can't wait till this phone launches, i love the new sense and its ability to have skins and the other features like Locations and Navigation by TomTom (it was confirmed after it launched on the Desire HD that TomTom was the maps/navigation provider)
if you look at all the options we have on this handset, it might not be a dual core phone but its definitely worth an upgrade from the Incredible, which reminds me
if Verizon does it the way i think they are, and launch after the 22nd, all the Original launch day Incredible owners would be eligible to upgrade to the ThunderBolt (assuming they got a 1 year contract, which i always get so i don't get burned when a new handset arrives the year after).
but it kinda makes sense,
launch the successor to a phone like the Incredible right after the time they become eligible to upgrade during there 1 year agreement, if i recall, they did this with the launch of the Droid X for the OGD owners, so timing really is everything.

True. I had a BB Curve, and being on the phone trying to pull up the Browser/Google Maps to get directions or anything was slower than hell...much easier just to look up and call back, you are correct there!
I am 42 yrs so for me a bigger screen without the cumbersome height of a droid x is worth considering. New sense is truly awesome too (now that I have played on the Z/HD ports) and the extra features are welcome. However, currently the Incredible is a truly open platform to us and we have no idea what HTC will do or be forced to do on the thunderbolt's bootloader. What if they go the motorola way?
As you can see from my sig I am a rom slut/whore/whatever is the male equivalent. I worry that HTC will make it harder for us to root the thunderbolt and that alone will be enough for me to rule out that phone. So I will seriously consider it only if I find out that it can be nand unlocked. Until then, no point switching from the inc to a phone that cant be modded and to be locked down into whatever the carrier allows me to do. That would be a bad trade. Plus LTE towers will only slowly be percolating across the country. I do not believe LTE will be widely available everywhere we are immediately. Why not wait a bit before paying for LTE service? Believe me, it will cost you more.
I also did not like the small battery. What if the energy utilization efficiencies are only marginal? That would not be good. The included 32gb micro sdhc card is worth some $ but think about this - why did they think they had to throw a free 32gb card in?
Another thing that concerns me is that while this phone might have better specs than the inc, it is not dual core (seems six months on every phone will be dual core) so is this a significant upgrade to the inc? I dont know. Early adopters may have a better toy only for a short period of time. The initial tech curve is always very steep.
My 2 cents
I think the pre-ordered ones were a beta firmware or were pre-production, because I just exchanged mines today at a corporate AT&T store and it just seems better and more fluid.
On the pre-ordered, when I check to see if there were a software update, I would get an error, but the in-store version will just say that I'm up to date. I can now view my playlist on the stock music player, which the in-store version would not. Also, when I get a notification, I get a bubble on the lock screen that tells me that, something the pre-order didn't do. The in-store version just feels smoother overall, thus I think Samsung must've screwed something up with the mad rush to get the phones out to everyone.
Interesting. I just read an article about the international S3 getting an update that made the UI smoother and had different radios. One of my friends got the Sprint S3 and it didn't have the launcher redraw issue I have.

I am of this same thought. There are going to be defective units out there. That's what happens in manufacturing (both hardware and software). Sometimes software doesn't "stick", sometimes molds get out of line. It happens.
Mine has issues with wifi, issues with bluetooth, random apps force closing regularly, voice control/s voice not working (opens then just closes) and wont check for updates (I get that server communication error thing).
My new one is on the way to replace the one I pre-ordered last month (middle of the month some time).

I'd be careful with this line of thought. If a unit has a difficult time caring out "stock" tasks, then isn't it possible an "aftermarket" program would cause even more issues?

I know exactly what you mean. I wasn't talking about apps.
Are the ROMs, Kernels and modems ALL built totally from scratch? Or, are they pulled from predefined configuration and then tweaked and massaged to the liking of the user? (an Aftermarket build that starts with the stock build and tweaked from there).
So, if the stock build has issues running on a particular unit (defective) what reasoning says it would run better when the ROM/Kernel/Modem is modified to suite the users' tastes? It's really a toss up isn't it? Are we breaking these phones down and physically testing each circuit and then saying "OK all hardware is fine, it must be this one line of code that is the issue."?
My point is, would you build a house on a cracked foundation (defective from factory)?
But, if the foundation is torn down completely and rebuilt from the ground up, then you can have a very stable house. Which I believe is more where you are coming from, and correct me if I am wrong. I am after all a noob. That's not a smart a** comment, I am new to Linux/Android.

So what does a program like Antutu Benchmark's information page (or some other system info program) say for details of the new phone? Let us know when you check and what you used to check it. I have probably one of the earliest shipping AT&T phones (received fedex on 6/22) so I'd like to compare component version numbers and such. I get the error on the update check and I don't recall getting a "bubble" on the lock screen. Could you post a screenshot of what you mean by that?

Hi DZ owners, I want to share a story with you:
*walloftext*
I had my DZ for about a year.
Then it was stolen one evening in a place full of people. I never thought I would see it again.
But then after about half a year I got 2 parties, which accused each other of having it.
Through intimidation on luck of one of them still having it I have got it back.
That imbecile did neither sell or use it. He just had it lying around in a cupboard as a kind of trophy, propably even smasehd it on ground some times... (And I wondered why I couldnt track it.)
Now the phone is a terrible mess. The battery was empty for a long time, degraded to not even last a day. The display (not the glass) was broken.
Then I bought a new battery and display for about 30€ replaced the display and while opening one of those small fragile connectors at the side of the board (I dont actually know what they connect, can someone tell me?), the lower one broke but I kludged it with a small piece of tape in place.
Fine everything worked, my Virtuous Unity install boots with /data as I left it.
The reading of my notes and contacts from that time really got me a nostalgia flash.
The sdcard was gone (I actually searched that guys box of stolen phones). Putting a new one in, phone mounts and stops complaining. After that I turned it off, wanting to sleep. The next day I loaded a fresh rom, QuadraSense because Virtuous Unity uses too much ram. Put it on SD and guess what? The SD (any of 5 microsds i have.) cant be mounted, not with FAT, not with EXT. Can the broken connector from the insides cause this?
But when I shake the phone the display brightness varies, (the kludged clip is not really stable) so I guess the connector is either for the display energy or the sensor but it could be multipurpose.
When I have fixed that, what will propably be the next problem with this phone?
Should I invest more time/replacement stuff into it or just buy a new one? Are there newer phones with physical keyboard?
I had a Motorola Milestone 2 for a while for really cheap but their keyboards suck because the keys stop working or stick, it seems like the existing MS2s have reached their end of life. (I have tested 4 MS2s all the same.)
I am thinking of a Galaxy Note if not keyboard. Anyone here knows about the openness and rom diversity? (I am browsing that forum right after this post so this is not just a lazyass question, more of an if someone just has the info in mind right now.)
lol at the existing tags!
sounds like the connection to the sdcard slot is damaged as well as the main flexcable as it sounds like you replaced the lcd
I don't know your situation but if it were me id find it gratifying to kick the guys ass and demand a brand new g2, but to each there own
personal opinion there isn't a better phone on the market right now than the g2/dz, at least not for my needs so it may be worth your time fixing this one
(that guy sounds like the kind of *******s that deserve very bad things)

What cell phone does this guy use? You should just take it out of his hand and tell him you're even. I did that to a guy who stole my skateboard once. He was on steroids and weighed 50lbs more than me, but I guess I used the f word enough times loud enough that he realized he was wrong? I don't know if i'd try that again though hahaha

I fear it might be the end of your DZ and tbh if it was me in your position I would go with a Note or may be the SG3
I'll pay him a visit today when hes back from work, I think hes got enough money to buy a new one. His currently used phone is an old Sony Erricson thing. As for if I am even with him, dont know my physical condition is not the best but with the power of ale one can not fail. XD
EDIT: Thats the broken piece inside:
Meh embedding doesnt work with 3 MB pics, just the link: http://gheddo.biz/pic/desirez.JPG

Just so you know my post was half joke. Yes, I think he owes you a new phone, but I don't want to find out you got in a fistfight with him b/c of my joke advice. haha but still, if he knows he's wrong, you'd be surprised sometimes how compliant a guilty person can be.
Good luck! Let us know what you decide and how it turns out =)
