I'm on KA5.
I'm assuming that I can't plug into mini kies and update KA6 official.
So, would updating to KA6 via ODIN (the pure stock file in the dev forum) be IDENTICAL to flashing back to the previous OTA and then updating to KA6 via mini Kies?
Would there be anything different at all (bootloader, modem, rom, etc)?
Seems like just flashing KA6 via ODIN would be an easy way to go for anyone who's not currently "stock".

if you flashed ka6 via odin, then your phone will not be recognized on mini kies, it will say "unregistered device" or no upgrade available..
both ka6 on kies and the one here on xda are the same... i suggest if you are on ka5 not stock and want to upgrade to ka6... then flashed via odin without a pit file and no repartition.. so you would be on ka6 retaining your current set up..
but wait for the experts' answers.. they could help you better , coz i could be wrong about this
I figured I can't upgrade KA5 to KA6 via Kies, but if I do upgrade it via ODIN is my phone, at that point, indistinguishable from someone who upgraded from the previous stock to KA6 via Kies.
Does that make sense? Will I be exactly at the same point as the other scenario?

ya that didnt make sense.. im kidding..
well if you already updated to ka6 via odin.. then mini kies wont let you upgrade anymore.. it will say 'unregstered device' or no upgrade available..
the only way for a phone to be recognized on mini kies is if the phone is on j16 firmware or jfd.. otherwise it wont upgarde at all if you are already on ka5/ka6
but if you want to upgarde your current ka5 settings (non stock) to ka6, then flash ka6 via odin without a pit file and do not tick repartition..
Ok, I guess that answers my question.
I'll just update to KA6 via ODIN and I should be indentical to everyone getting it from kies.
So why are people who aren't on stock talking about going backwards to get the update from Kies? If you aren't on stock, you must already know ODIN.
Seems way easier to just do it that way.

because these people thought that kies will have a different firmware available instaed of ka6? i was surprised too when i plugged my phone in and it said ka6 on mini kies.. i was expecting another firmware version..
come to think of it, i think ka6 is not a final build, like unfinished... there is no android keyboard.. heptic feedback is feeble (unless sammy changed it to that)..
so im on stock ka6 right now(updated via kies) and using touchwiz, i normally use adw ex,but im using touchwiz and hoping i'll get the OTA and a different version of froyo?
not even sure if i'll still get an OTA update as im already on "official" froyo ka6..LOL

So..i am one of the many frustrated Samsung customers that cant get Kies to work.. and yes tried many things to get it to work...
have unmounted both internal and external card
and nothing works...
So my question is.....i dont want to be left out.when Froyo comes..
what are the likelyhoods of one Froyo out..for us to see a firmware and flash it via odin???
of course you can Odin
just keep an eye on samsung firmware .com
we are already using Odin to flash the leaked 2.2 ROMs

i hope it is possible and samsung dont stop this
When reading about roms I always see them saying to make sure I have some specific version of the modem, which needs to be flashes separately, etc
What is the modem? Is it just the baseboard version on the system info page?
Yes.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab, that makes phone calls
So if that says (something something).DK28, I have the DK28 modem?
When I update to a different Rom (planning to pick up one of the ones based on official 2.2 when they come out) do I need to do something else to get a newer version of the modem too?
Yes if it says ....dk28 under baseband you have 2.2 modem. If you want to flash a custom rom you are fine. Your baseband is already updated. The reason why roms say that is some people used the update.zip method to go to froyo but you still had to Odin your modem so people were on froyo but modem was on eclair. If you use Odin with the tar files you always get the modem with it. Good luck
I used update.zip to get to DK28 and it says I have the DK28 modem.
Baseband version: S: D700:0:55: DK28

Yes, there is one update.zip that will flash the modem, but it requires you to be on DI18.
Odin is the fool-proof method
yes odin is the best way. it starts you out with a clean start.

Hey guys!
So I took your advice, bit the bullet, and rooted my phone despite potentially losing my warranty. One thing that I was hearing around these forums is that 2.3.4 solves a lot of issues, is that true? If so, I would really like to upgrade. Now that I have a rooted phone, is there anything different to go about doing that? Can I upgrade or would I also have to install a customer kernel again? AND if there is one, which one?
Thanks guys!
Shawn
Just flash to 2.3.4, then re-root again like you did before. No difference.
you don't have to root your phone to install official leaked 2.3.4 rom. Root is required only for cooked roms.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Since you have a rooted phone, just use CWM and load a 2.3.4 rom.
Sorry if i am off topic but new here and still confused with the famous root...
My phone is not root yet but thinking to flash to the 2.3.4 thru KIES, so my question is if i upgrade can i go back to 2.3.3 if i don't like it ???
Thanks in advance...

Yes you can downgrade... 2.3.4 is not so different than 2.3.3, however, you can't downgrade via KIES, you have to use Odin and old firmware.
So, now that I have rooted my phone, can I use KIES to upgrade, or do I have to use CWS? I really want that 2.3.4 upgrade after I heard how much better the battery life is with the upgrade.
You can, Kies won't recognize rooted/non-rooted device as long as you are on Stock ROM.
Hmmm, so KIES says that my version of the phone cannot be upgraded...
At this point, what do I do? I've been looking around and can't figure out a few things... Can someone recommend me to the exact ROM I will need to install to get this working? Once I update the ROM, will I have to do another root process? I imagine no, because from what I know, rooting just overrides the kernel, and a ROM comes with a kernel. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Make sure you type *#1234# in the keypad and record down the PDA, Phone and CSC versions before you update. Make sure you are able to find that exact version on Intratech's stock ROM thread. With this, you can flash back to 2.3.3 if you don't like 2.3.4 using Odin without losing any of your data.

You can upgrade either through KIES, CWM or Odin. Personally I prefer Odin because there are many no-wipe stock ROMs out there in a 1 file package suitable for flashing using ODIN.

Type *#1234# in the keypad and post what is written for PDA, Phone and CSC.
Then go to your settings, About phone page and post what your kernel version is.
I have rooted my phone using the same version kernel as my stock ROM and KIES could still update the phone.

Sure here is the info:
PDA: I9100MUGKG2

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (i9500) which is rooted. Plugging it into Samsung Kies shows that there's an update to the MG9 firmware available for it. I'd like to know whether it will be possible to do a backup and upgrade with the phone rooted.
If not, how safe would it be to unroot the phone via SuperSU's menu before flashing through Kies?
Lastly, if I am going to be recommended not to do either of the above, then where can I get a link to manually download the latest, original firmware as well as a working root for said firmware, for my i9500?
Thanks for the responses in advance.

Don`t think if you`ll be able to update through Kies or OTA as you system is modified and the counter is raised. You`ll have to wait till Triangle Away will work for the I9500. Just flash the new rom with Odin and reroot afterwards.

Thanks for that.
Can anyone else confirm or provide me with a link to the latest official firmware? I have searched rather quickly myself, but keep getting results for the MG5 firmware instead, which is supposedly newer than the MG9 firmware. However, Kies tells me that the latest for my device is actually MG9.
If anyone could just shed some light.

Thanks for that. Not too sure where my device originated from, so I'll have to check the documentation when I get home or something.
Also, coincidentally I stumbled upon that website about 20 minutes ago. Didn't even notice they supplied the firmware.

The i9500 variant will use any i9500 software as far as I know. You can flash the UAE firmware on an Indian i9500 and it will work fine. This goes with any country, you just need to flash using odin

Haha. This is why im a noob
Is it possible to update from 4.3 to 4.4.x through Kies or through the updater on the phone itself? I'm running 4.3, but the phone and Kies both say that it is running the latest firmware.
Probably not. I believe T-Mobile and Russian users got the update OTA but not us. Why not just use Odin? Just make a manual backup and flash Odin, then restore it and voila.
Best of luck! :good::good::good::good::good:

Thanks, I was just curious if I was the only one experiencing that problem. I will definitely upgrade to 4.4 eventually either way.
