[Q] Clockwork Backup Question - Fascinate General

What parts of my phone does a Clockwork backup actually back up?
I am pretty sure it doesn't back up the Modem, correct?
Does it back up both the Kernel and the ROM?
Thanks!

Another question: Is doing a Clockwork backup the same thing as doing a "Nandroid" backup?
if not, what is the difference and how do you do a Nandroid backup?
Thanks (again)!

If im not mistaken a CWM backup and nandroid backup are the same thing, and it only backs up the ROM not ther kernel or the modem

One reply says it does backup the kernel as long as it is a non-voodoo kernel.
This seems right since the backup directory holds all the files that is from the kernel.
I am quite sure that on my phone CWM backup (in recovery mode at least) backs up literally everything.

Nandroid Backup?

Hello
What is a nandroid backup? How do i do a nandroid backup? I have a nexus one flashed CM 6.00 RC2
Thanks in advance
basically a nandroid is a image of your phone, like a backup in windows, when you restore a nandroid it puts your phone back how it was when you made it, with data and apps and everything.
well, first you gotta boot into recovery.
which did you install? Clockwork or Amon_Ra? Not that they are that different
Then go to backup/restore and select nandroid backup then restore it whenevery your phone/rom is not working correct.
I installed ROM manager and flashed the clockwork mod. In the ROM manager do i enter recovery mode?

You can, or you can select backup current rom in rom manager

Does it matter if i do my nandroid backup on CW3 or CW2?

CW 3.0.0.5 or cw 2.5.1.2?
Does it make a difference which I use to do my nandroid backups? I'm using Nebula which still requires flashing in CW 2.5...so that's why I ask.
Also I did a backup yesterday in each, and when I tried to restore from both they both said md5 checksum fail. I had to restore from an older backup. What would cause that?
Did you rename the backup? That messes it up.
I dont think the CWM version matters, I restored a backup from 2.5 in 3 after an upgrade
Yeah I renamed them. thanks for the answer on that.
When renaming don't use space and keep it simple some characters don't work (for me).

Not sure how it's done on the epic side of things, but nobody does nandroid backups in the captivate, vibrant, or i9k forums. Clockworkmod doesn't save the modems or kernals and such all the time so it doesn't back em up. Therefore you can be restoring a rom over a bad kernal flash, or incompatible modem, ect. Just keep the cw update.zip on the sd, odin to stock, use titanium backup to restore apps. Android ID changer to restore id and your good.

[Q] Question on Nandroid backups

Now, I haven't cared too much about Nandroid backups since nothing is too important for me to save, and I'm running a different ROM almost every day... But what do Nandroid backups backup ? Just the ROM? ROM and data + Kernel ? And If I do a full wipe and I have a Nandroid backup, do I have to Flash the ROM first, then flash the Nandroid over it? Or can I just full wipe and flash the nandroid?
Nandroid isn't something I use a lot (or at all), so this is kinda odd to me.
A nandroid backup is essentially an image of your entire phone. The entire OS, phonebook, messages, settings...everything.
Awesome, so I can just flash the nandroid right after a full wipe, correct?
Yep, absolutely. Just don't forget that only CWM 3.0.0.6 can flash and restore anything. The other versions are limited to Froyo or Gingerbread, not both.
Yeah I know, I flashed 3.0.0.6 the second i saw it did both ROMs, I haven't had a problem since ^_^ But thanks !
+2 to your Thanks Meter
Glad you got it worked out.

[Q] The difference between nandroid backup vs current ROM backup

Ok so this is probably a total n00b question but I would like help understanding. What is the difference between a nandroid backup and the current ROM backup from ROM manager with clockworkmod recovery?
Ummm.. there both the same?
Nandroid backup is when u go to cwm and "backup"
Rom manager just calls it "current rom backup" but all it does is take u to cwm and backup ur rom
There the same

Thanks, I was getting confused by that. I suspected that they were the same, but I was not sure. I appreciate it.

Its cool; backup is the standard term, but amon sorta 'coined' nandroid, because it was a combination of nand [the memory] + android, backup, so nandroid was the result, so nandroid typically refers to a backup using amon ra recovery. Though in the end, as said, nandroid=backup.

What is a nandroid backup and how does it differ from titanium backup?

I am new to this rooting world....I rooted my nexus 4 a week back using Nexus root toolkit v1.8.
I then flashed cm11 onto my phone.
I have TWRP recovery on my phone.
I want a full backup of my apps+data+ROM. How's this possible?? Which of these backups allow this..... And how to do these backups.
Also can anyone explain what a kernel is??
Titanium backup can only backup part of your data. Simply because apps can't access everything.
If you want a full backup, you should make a nandroid backup. Which is simply the name for a backup you do through your recovery. (TWRP in your case)
And the explanation of a kernel is really easy to find. So you'll have to use Google for that (I can't really think of a good explanation atm)

How to perform a full nandroid backup using TWRP recovery??
Also can I do the nandroid backup directly to my PC

Just use the backup toggle in twrp. And no, you can't backup direct to your pc. But afterwards you can copy the backup to your pc. It's good practice to have at least one recent backup there just in case something happens where you'll need it.

First, don't use rom manager. You don't need it
A nandroid is like a copy of the entire os and all your apps and user settings. If your running rom2 and you restore rom1 all your settings of rom 2 will be forgotten and the ones you had in rom 1 when you backed it up will be restored.

Although this is not really accurate, but this is as close as I can get to. Think of a phone like a car. The engine part which is essential to make your car runs is your kernel while the body, doors, sidemirrors and everything else are part of a rom. Kernel is in the deeper layer of the system.
