My brother in law recently switched over to SPRINT and gave me his pretty new DX. I can't activate the phone until next week (because he made the mistake of porting the phone number BEFORE he gave me the phone) so according to VZW i have to wait until that process is completed and the billing cycle is finished before I can use the phone. (I don't think he plans on paying them )
My question is...can I root the DX before I actually get it linked to my VZW phone number? (like remove google apps and just use the phones capabilities like camera etc. without having to call and activate it) I'm coming from HTC Droid eris so I don't know much about rooting the DX yet.
Can someone help me please.
I believe you can, I think theirs a way to bypass the activation screen. You might be able to find it on the forums or if not just Google it I'm sure you can find it.

Yes you can root it without being on a network. all you need to do is go back out of this thread and read the first sticky and go to the wiki. I would post link but since this is my first actual post i cant
And after your phone reboots you can get passed the little android man by touching each corner in a circular motion.
I hope for your sake that your brother in law pays Verizon. If he doesn't in they most likely blacklist the phones esn.

But keep in mind if the phone doesn't have OTA 2.2 you might want to keep all apps because the update might fail because missing files.

You don't even need to do the 4 corner trick.
Touch the android, hit next until you have the options of "create google login, sign in, or skip" and just choose skip. That easy.
That's assuming he's at the "touch to begin screen" which he probably isn't being that he's the second owner.
...but yeah, check the sticky and root away.
Thanks for the information guys. Yeah I really hope that they allow him to give me his phone. I kept verifying with the rep that it would be okay to transfer the phone, he said it should be okay since it's HIS property. But i never know with those guys...
I don't plan on removing any apps at all I just want get the root access and ready so when I do hook it up, it'll be ready to go.
I'm excited to see what you guys have in store for this phone...especially coming from the Eris.
Just connect with wifi and use as normal. That easy. You can even setup a google account and use market and have all the sweet and chewies of using the X less the ability of calls and texts.
As stated above, if he doesn't pay the bill VzDubya will (normally) put the phone on the do not activate list. Again though this wont effect use while connected to wifi.
Will I have to set the phone to USB debugging mode if I try and root?
If so, I dont think I'll be able to root since I can't even get passed the "Activation Screen"
Also, how can I check to see what android version he is on (2.1 or 2.2) How do I look at the bootloader info...can I do that w/o Root? Is that dangerous? I don't want to brick the phone...
sorry for all the questions guys appreciate your patience.
Anyone?
Press menu then setting scroll to the bottom of the list to about phone click it and your info will be there. Just a thought if you don't know how to find something that simple are you sure you want to be playing with root.

Actually if you read the first post. The phone is not activated yet, so I don't have the option to "menu>settings".
And Yes, I rooted my Eris. Thanks.
Not sure if this changes in 2.2, but the stock dialer is horrid compared to HTC, it isn't the worst thing in the world, but I am surprised there aren't more dialers available. I was wondering what people use for a dialer, do you usually download a 3rd party app? Use a dev-made dialer?
Just have not had this so long, I would love to just hear the responses.
Thanks so much in advance (and can we stick this to 2.1? The dialer may change in 2.2 but I have stuck with 2.1)
Dialer in 2.2 is not any better. In fact it logs your sms as call logs so for somone like me who goes through 6000 ( literary) texts a month it becomes annoying. I'm using "diar one". Its fast and has a lot more cutomization options. Give it a shot. It's free on the market.

My rom disables this. Can I ask? What don't you guys like about it?
cd's or tapes?
Hi. What rom r u running? I'm on dk28 and my text logs show up in my call logs. I can switch to missed or dialed calls through the setting but that is not the friendliest way. I liked the stock one but since I went to 2.2 the daler anoyed me a bit.

I am on 2.1 on the Quantum ROM but I am 99% sure it is the stock dialer, maybe colored differently.
What I don't like about it is that when you start typing someone's name in the htc dialer, i.e. you start typing "aro" it will pull up "aron" and other names with "aro" in it or the numbers in it, and you can scroll down through the names.
With this dialer, if you are trying to say call David, you may need to type "DAVID" before it actually shows up because when you hit "D,A,V" you can't scroll through them all, it gives you ONE suggestion.
Maybe it's just personal preference, I just wish I knew how to update the .apk better, a 3rd party sounds a little iffy.
Try FastDialer. It is fast and pretty complex.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
On your stock dialer start typinyg D A V then to the right of where u r typing an arrow should appear (righ above the "3 DEF" button) click that arrow and you should have a list of names that contain D A V or the associated numbers. That's assuming yu have other names or numbers that are similar to D A V. Let me know if it worked. Thx.

I like "Dialer One" a lot. It's free on the market and has all the features I expect from a good dialer.
I have posted in the wrong forum somtimes. Shame on me.
Now, in the thread mensioned above, the thread-starter want us to use the "search this forum"-button.
My question.
Why can't I use that very nice button when browsing this site with my tablet or SGS? It is disappearing when touching it. From a pc it's no problem.
I had trouble with this last night, if you touch the arrow for the dropdown search entry, then hit advanced search, it works fine
Also maybe another browser will do this correctly, not sure

so ive pm'd TDJ about this issue and since i cannot post on the actual thread yet, i thought id try here. he said he has seen the problem but has not experienced it himself therefore he cannot assess the situation i think. anywho, ive been using this rom for about a week and what ive been experiencing is something with the sms inbox and sms popup. this is what i mean
so this is how it looks like if i go into my message inbox:
friend 1:
friend 2:
friend 2:
friend 3:
friend 4:
now if i click the first duplicate it will show our conversation
friend 2:
me:
friend 2:
me:
etc
if i click the second duplicate it'll just show my friend's responses and whatever i decided to text through my message inbox
me:
friend 2:
friend 2:
friend 2:
friend 2:
TDJ said i should add the 1 before the phone numbers to see if that works but all my contacts on google have the 1 and even hyphens. is anyone else experiencing this?
ALSO! so i did a factory reset on this rom and before i did it i was able to use a custom sound for my boot load (using the PSX boot load + PSX mp3 i ripped from youtube = epic win) now when i tried to select it again after the reset, nada. it said "failed to select sound" or something like that. should i reflash the rom?
Did you use the -wipe flag before flashing? Try that and flash again. I've had better experiences with adding the flag

I'll give it a shot! All I do is add that flag and still flash normally??
Added the flag and flashed. We'll see what happens
Update: the flag worked. Not seeing duplicate threads for a contact. Thanks!

My problem wasn't having duplicate contacts in my address book but having duplicate contacts display in my SMS inbox when I decided to respond through the popup. I fixed the problem simply by turning off the "new message pop-UPS" feature although I would still love to use it. *le sigh*

I know many folks are having issues with Sprint Visual Voicemail while on EpicMTD CM7, including myself. I switched to YouMail as an alternative VVM handler, but I may start experimenting with Sprint VVM to see if I can find a reliable fix.
Request: does anyone have a newer version than T.5.1.0.48 of Sprint VVM? If so, please let me know and provide a DL link! PM or in-topic, I don't care--it'll be added to the OP when I notice it. Fixes and alternatives suggestions are welcome, and as soon as I find 'em I'll post them to the OP.
Sprint Visual Voicemail Fixes
-- Backup Method (before flashing CM7)
As the title states, possibly the best method is to create a backup of your Sprint VVM ("Voicemail") and data with your favorite backup software before flashing CM7 or any other non-TouchWiz ROMs.
Flash to CM7
Restore Sprint VVM with data
Note: before creating the backup, be sure to have successfully used the VVM app at least once--this initializes the app and creates several data files that will be needed when you restore app+data.
-- How-To Guide from Evo 4G forums
How-To Reinstall Your Sprint Visual VM under CM7!!!
Note: probably the second-most reliable method, as this also restores data--just not your data, but the data of whoever provided the files!
-- theimpaler747's Sprint VVM flashable .zip
Topic link
Note: should reliably install the VVM app, but does not restore/install any data, thus may or may not work.
Voicemail Alternatives
--Google Voice
Google Voice webpage
Google Voice Android Market web link
--YouMail
YouMail website
YouMail Android Market web link
Added theimpaler747's flashable .zip of the Sprint Visual Voicemail .apk.
Backing up the voicemail app with Titanium backup before flashing CyanogenMod is a way to have it available after the flash via a Restore. That is how I did it.

Yeah, I should have added that already, thanks. In fact, that seems to be the most reliable method. But from what I'm reading around the XDA forums (not just the Epic sub-forum) you must restore data for it to work.
I used a method I found elsewhere (I'll add it shortly) and installed an .apk and copied someone else's Titanium Backup'ed data. It's working, though I'm still getting the system alert texts from 9016. I'm looking into that now...
God I just want the text notifications to stop. I got that on the stock ROM too. So annoying to get multiple notifications of the same thing. Tried youmail, but don't like the way it polls for messages and that it uses more than 3x the ram that stock vvm does.

You should put switching to google voice as an alternative. Anybody with half a brain would use it instead of paying sprint for the same thing with less features.

Oh yeah, I'm so eager to use your suggestion now that you've indirectly insulted me!
I haven't switched for two reasons: a) because I've heard more than one person list drawbacks to Google Voice, though to be honest I can't remember a single specific example; and b) I don't need many features, and I happen to like the simplicity of the Sprint VVM.
I'll add it because some people may find it useful, but in the future you can keep your insulting statements to yourself. Thanks, I suppose? IDK...
I don't use Google voice cause I don't see a way to stop the annoying texts and emails on that either. Otherwise I might. I just want a simple vvm.

All I did was blacklist the 9016 number. Using root explorer I had the stock ei22 ROM and extracted sprint vm and moved it to system/app, then selected it and hit install, went to my app draw opened it and it provisioned. Sprint vm works well and I haven't had a problem yet

I can't use blacklist because I use apw and the messages well still show on the messaging widget even if they are blacklisted in handcent.

'Tis what I did as well.
Seriously has everyone forgot that apps only simplify things in android and anything in an app can be done manually, albeit a little more time consuming? Including backup/restore.

This one worked perfectly for me, although I did have to reboot into recovery and wipe caches before it would work.
Thank you AmericanJedi001, I updated my post for new users on the dev thread with a link to this super helpful thread.
I think you are the most helpful user on the CM7 forums, here on XDA and over on forum.cyanogenmod.com . Your responses are always thoughtful and comprehensive. It's very nice.
[Edit] I'll add that with Google Voice setup with the Sprint integration, not just a voicemail handler, I do not have the 9016 text message. After setting up Google Voice I set, Phone > Preferences > Voicemail handler > Google Voice.

Cool that you're spreading the word... Thanks for the recognition, though I don't know if I'd say I'm the most helpful. I'll settle for second-most helpful. I've just seen suggestions to be made mostly since I switched to CM7. Yes, I try to only post clear, concise, and comprehensive help topics. Otherwise, what's the point?
