My brother in law recently switched over to SPRINT and gave me his pretty new DX. I can't activate the phone until next week (because he made the mistake of porting the phone number BEFORE he gave me the phone) so according to VZW i have to wait until that process is completed and the billing cycle is finished before I can use the phone. (I don't think he plans on paying them )
My question is...can I root the DX before I actually get it linked to my VZW phone number? (like remove google apps and just use the phones capabilities like camera etc. without having to call and activate it) I'm coming from HTC Droid eris so I don't know much about rooting the DX yet.
Can someone help me please.
I believe you can, I think theirs a way to bypass the activation screen. You might be able to find it on the forums or if not just Google it I'm sure you can find it.

Yes you can root it without being on a network. all you need to do is go back out of this thread and read the first sticky and go to the wiki. I would post link but since this is my first actual post i cant
And after your phone reboots you can get passed the little android man by touching each corner in a circular motion.
I hope for your sake that your brother in law pays Verizon. If he doesn't in they most likely blacklist the phones esn.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
But keep in mind if the phone doesn't have OTA 2.2 you might want to keep all apps because the update might fail because missing files.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
You don't even need to do the 4 corner trick.
Touch the android, hit next until you have the options of "create google login, sign in, or skip" and just choose skip. That easy.
That's assuming he's at the "touch to begin screen" which he probably isn't being that he's the second owner.
...but yeah, check the sticky and root away.
Thanks for the information guys. Yeah I really hope that they allow him to give me his phone. I kept verifying with the rep that it would be okay to transfer the phone, he said it should be okay since it's HIS property. But i never know with those guys...
I don't plan on removing any apps at all I just want get the root access and ready so when I do hook it up, it'll be ready to go.
I'm excited to see what you guys have in store for this phone...especially coming from the Eris.
Just connect with wifi and use as normal. That easy. You can even setup a google account and use market and have all the sweet and chewies of using the X less the ability of calls and texts.
As stated above, if he doesn't pay the bill VzDubya will (normally) put the phone on the do not activate list. Again though this wont effect use while connected to wifi.
Will I have to set the phone to USB debugging mode if I try and root?
If so, I dont think I'll be able to root since I can't even get passed the "Activation Screen"
Also, how can I check to see what android version he is on (2.1 or 2.2) How do I look at the bootloader info...can I do that w/o Root? Is that dangerous? I don't want to brick the phone...
sorry for all the questions guys appreciate your patience.
Anyone?
Press menu then setting scroll to the bottom of the list to about phone click it and your info will be there. Just a thought if you don't know how to find something that simple are you sure you want to be playing with root.

And Yes, I rooted my Eris. Thanks.

I tried 3 times today with different people and no dice
Call them and act like there's a problem with your voicemail or tell them your not receiving your text messages. They're more then likely give you the MSL code to check and see if everything is in order. Or tell them your msid number is wrong or blank. They will have to give you your MSL to reprogram your phone.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
What do you need the MSL for? I'm not 100% sure what it is used for.
I spoke to a sprint tech and he gave me ##786# and then reset and gave me a 6 digit number. Is that my MSL? The reason I called to speak to sprint was that my phone would say "unknown" when I turned on 4G and would never turn itself on. You can use this excuse if you call them. (The fix to this problem was replacing the phone. Factory reset and re-flashing didn't fix it.)

that worked got my msl thanks!!!
the reason is i am looking to change my slot index but now i cant find where it is
Nevermind someone beat me to it.
An easier way to get it is the "getprop" command in ADB or the ConnectBot App connecting locally. It clearly shows those 6 magic numbers and tells you that its your msl several lines down.

Easiest way - get the free MSL reader app from the market!
Though I think it requires root.

Slot index is controlled at the tower. No matter what you switch your phone to, the network will override it.
dang it well maybe i dont remember the name correctly
but its the number that controls how often the phone checks in for calls
i remember the hero had it and the pixi

This is the easiest.
the getprop command in ConnectBot works even without root Pretty easy to identify the msl as the property is called [ril.MSL].
Confirm ConnectBot worked on an unrooted Epic
1. Run ConnectBot
2. From the dropdown on bottom left corner select local if not already selected
3. Use any name
4. Type getprop press Enter
and scroll up a little and there it is, thank you pgk23 and drkgouki

Another easy way is this. You will need another working sprint phone. Yes its kinda long and convoluted but it works. Log into your sprint account online. Find the thing that says I want to...Activate new phone. Turn off both phones. Activate the second phone on the account and let it turn off the first one. I forget what screen it is but after the screen that you have to wait while it's activated, there's going to be programming numbers in there. I think the first field is secondary blah blah. Then under that is one time blah blah. The secondary is your msl. You don't need to program the phone like it says on that screen if the phone is used. If it's brand spankin new, then yes you do. Anyways, the screen after that one is the last screen. Turn on the second phone and let it stay on for a few minutes. Make sure you can make calls and use data. To be on the safe side and not confuse the network because you switch phones like every five minutes, wait like thirty minutes to an hour then turn off the second phone. Now go back and do the same routine with the phone you originally wanted the msl. Don't rush it or you might have to call customer care for real to have them fix your mistakes. There was occasions that the data didn't want to come back on so I had to call them from another phone, but that doesn't happen very often. Just give the network some time to change over to the other phone before you start changing things again.
Getprop didn't work on all the phones I've tried. It worked on moment but I couldn't get it to work or find the number with the evo I think.

easiest way..:
connectbot
getprop [ril.MSL]
that gives the msl without you having to search for it.

Any apps out there that can remote wipe, or at least remotely set a pattern lock on your phone?
Lookout can wipe your phone remotely as well as wave secure. Both of these require a subscription though. I'm not aware of a free one though.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
but you have to set them up on your phone first. I can't do that right now, I just wanna wipe it.
I believe es security manager lets you remote lock without a subscription. You have to set a password and then send an sms to your phone with a special pattern that includes that password, iirc.

By the way if you already lost the phone, you won't be able to remote wipe it.

also
if you are running a rom like evil's desire HD rom and you sign up for HTC sense you can login to the web page https://www.htcsense.com/us/ and wipe the phone using that
but you have to have been running a rom that supports it like the above mentioned

Actually, there's a new app that can at least locate your device after it's already lost. I'll go digging for it, I read it in an article recently - gotta go find it. Essentially, since the new Market is available, you can download the app via the Web after your device is already lost. It will download to your phone and start giving you GPS coordinates. I'm not sure if it also offers a remote-wipe feature...I'll reply back if/when I find it!

So, yeah, I'm going to see if there's anything specifically wrong with my Epic in terms of the abysmal data speeds and nonexistent GPS I've been dealing with. I've pulled the SD card out but I don't want the folks in the Sprint store to have access to all of my email. Is there an advisable way to conceal my email (and contacts, for that matter)?

If you really want to be secure, you can use an app that backs up your contacts to SD card (plenty non rooted ones on the Market) and then do a factory reset.
You can also just remove your email account, there is an option under "Accounts and Sync" located in Settings.
I don't think they will be looking at your email though, but I understand your privacy.

Not to my knowledge their isnt. You will probibly have to go into Settings>Privacy>Factory Reset and that will wipe your phone back to original but you will lose your apps and MMS. There are ways to back those up as stated ^^^^ but as far as you email and contacts. those are backed up through Gmail. Also from what ive noticed you cant just delete your gmail account off your phone.... Well at least mine wont let me. you can unsync it but then can easily check the box if they wanted too. Good Luck

This is way off topic but i noticed in your sig marcussant that Sprint updating isnt working? is that why my phone says error when tring to update my PRL?
PS. sorry to OP for going off topic
as far as I can tell, the issue with simply removing the google account is that one can't do that unless there's also another google account linked to the phone. in my case, contacts, email, market, etc. are all linked to one account, so the phone won't allow me to delete it. I would imagine creating a replacement account would work, but I can't be bothered. the simple fix I found was to change my gmail password so that the gmail app can no longer sync. now my inbox is empty on the Epic and that's really all I wanted.
There is an app in the android market called app protector plus. It allows you to lock any app you desire. It requires the person to use a pin or pattern password to gain access. It will set you back $1.50 but is well worth it.

But if it's just linked to the phone lock that won't work for him. You have to give them the password when you give them the phone so they can work on it.
I brought my phone in for gps issues back with ec05 and all they did was a factory reset.
Make sure you tell them you don't want it reset! That's is sprints goto plan with a phone is to reset it and go from there.
i'd really think of throughing cwm on quick, making a nandroid, odin to stock ec05, let it update to ei22 see if the issue is still there, (I'm sure it will be) then bring it to them. When they can't fix it you can quickly reroot it and restore your backup.
If you can't or just won't back it up fully try "my backup" in the market and backup what you can. Trust me, if you hand them that phone they will reset it first thing they try.
This app is separate from the phone lock pattern. It only locks the applications you set to lock out.

And since your running stock, don't worry about it, sprint already knows everything you do on your phone, e-mail, data, you name it, through CarrierIQ. Your data speeds are slow, and your gps doesn't work because sprint is so busy using it to look through your phone and see where you are.
For me when I bring in my phone I use launcher pro to hide my apps I don't want them seeing under general options in LP

CIQ is disabled by default, but with a service always running looking for the call to activate. Read k0nane's thread about it.
To OP: your best bet is to start over from scratch. ODIN EC05, don't accept the OTA update. Update your profile and PRL, then run GPS. If it all works, then flash the update or accept the OTA. After that finishes, test those 3 again.

I've actually done all this...I was rooted and running ROMs for months. There wasn't any real data speed improvement and battery life was lackluster with most of the ROMs, so I flashed back around a month ago in order to be able to bring the phone into Sprint. I've just been dragging my feet on it. Also, the GB I'm running is from the flashed update made available here, not the OTA.

Sir, that was a joke. Hence the Smiley purple thing at the end.
And I have read that thread, so I know it's disabled by default.
I still think it was funny.
why so sirius.
my parents put an app on my phone to monitor my texts and calls. it also blocks me from running any apps once they are installed without my dad unblocking them. the app is my mobile watchdog and it auto starts on boot. i cannot get into the settings because they are blocked. i need a way to remove the permission to start on boot. so i can still start it if i need to by opening the app. i have tried a lot of things to bypass it. i may seem sneaky but would you want your parents watching every single little thing you did on your phone?
I apologise of this is not the case, but I assume your parents pay for your phone.Simplest way to remove the monitoring is to buy your own phone.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
it can easily be disabled/removed. I dont like the fact that your parents are doing that crap but at the same time I am not going to provide a solution.
I suggest either dealing directly with your parents for being turds or get your own phone. What they going to say when they go to check on you and it the app is gone.....?

Lets continue on this thread instead of Development since it does not contribute to the community in that aspect.
Gonna need more info:
App name?
Rooted?
Recovery?
Also, if they monitor your texts and calls, don't you think they'd notice that you've suddenly stopped calling and texting? What happens when they send you a test message to see if it shows up on their end? Gotta think in advance of the moves they would take.
And I agree with albundy.....take it up with them first. Be reasonable or else you may not have a phone to monitor at all.
A better question is why did they put it there in the first place.

If its activated, then it will show your phone number, that info is stored in a separate partition from /data (this is cleared with a "factory reset") and from /system (this is where roms are installed to)
Either use the Ubersonic Inactive Device ROM or cancel/deactivate the phones cellular account.
Even if you cancel /deactivate the account the old number will be shown. The only way to get rid of the number is to remove it with qpst. That is a bunch of work with no real gain. Just don't worry about it and use any rom of your choice.

Yes that is what we all have said. Yet you can edit out the phone number in qpst. Then only thing shown on a rom would be the esn/meid.

Good question OP, it is a somewhat obscure topic.
I'm not going to try and tell you what you should or shouldn't worry about.
Do what you want.
If you decide it to be necessary here is the concept you need that can be done from your phone.

Yeah, that's what I would do.
Just got it installed, looks like that is what I was looking for. Going to use it at work with a generic Pandora login for everyone in my area to use. Thanks again for the suggestion!
Thank you to the OP for this idea... I didn't even think to use my old evo as a wifi pandora radio. I knew I kept this thing around for a reason
What I do is toggle airplane mode "on" then toggle WiFi "on". This shuts off the phones radio and some other things that really drain your battery. I have kept mine on for almost 3 days without it dying.
